Literary Analysis of Night

Directions: Choose one of the following questions to answer. 1. The title of the book Night has symbolic connections with pure evil. Because of this Elie Wiesel often uses night (both literally and figuratively) and darkness to enhance the evil demonstrated in portions of the book. Find examples of this and explain how night and darkness enhances the depth of the evil in each scene. 2. One question that readers often ask after reading Night is Why didnt the Jews fight back? One answer to this question is that the Jews had a hard time believing what they were told was going to happen. They ignored the truth even though it was often right in front of them. How does Elie Wiesel use irony in the early chapters of the book to emphasize and draw extra attention to the fact that the Jews ignored the truth? 3. In the beginning of the novel, Wiesel describes Moche the Beadles eyes as dreaming with their gaze lost in the distance, in other words full of vitality and life. In the very last chapter, however, Wiesel describes his own eyes as that of a corpse dead. How does Elie Wiesel use the eyes motif to show the change in characters from the beginning of the book to the end of the book? Trace the change in the characters, the collective loss of innocence, from the beginning to the end using the eyes motif. 4. While it is true that the Nazis treated the Jewish prisoners like animals, it is also true, unfortunately, that the Jewish prisoners started acting like animals. Because of this, Elie Wiesel often uses animals and animal imagery to describe how they were less than men. Find examples where Wiesel uses animal imagery both to describe the Nazis and the Jewish prisoners. Then explain why Wiesel chose each animal reference, how it adds to the meaning and depth of each passage. Requirements: 1. 1. 2. 3. Introduction and conclusion paragraph Two 250-words body paragraphs At least two quotes (but you may use more), properly cited, in each body paragraph Double spaced, Times New Roman OR Garamond, 12 pt. font

How to Make the Works Cited: 1. In text citation: After you quote material from your book you need to follow your quote with the authors last name and page number. It should look like this: I was walking in a cemetery, among stiffened corpses, logs of wood. Not a cry of distress, not a groan, nothing but a mass agony, in silence (Wiesel 95).
