THIRD YEAR INTEGRATED PROJECT SEMESTER I 2011/2012 Based on the process given in Table 1, each group has to prepare a report according to the format of Panduan Penulisan Tesis Gaya UKM (2009) on the following items:
a) Find information on the product usage, demand vs. supply, future marketing potential and sources of raw materials, waste generation, any environmental issues such as discharge limit and relevant environmental act and safety precaution taken during the production process. Prepare process flow diagram (PFD) using standard engineering drawing symbols using any engineering design softwares such as Autocad or Visio. Based on the economic analysis, select a relevant production rate for the plant and perform an overall material and energy balance for the whole plant. Compare your results with iCON or SUPERPRO simulation.

Design a suitable reactor/bioreactor unit for the particular process and state the reasons for your choice. Derive the general mole balance or mass balance equation for the reactor/bioreactor system and include the kinetic rate expression whenever necessary. If this particular process requires the use of a catalyst/biocatalyst, please justify your catalyst/biocatalyst choice. Specify any byproduct of the process. Suggest the separation method of the main product from its impurities and indicate a way of stabilizing these products in the final stream.
Propose and design solid separation equipment suitable to be used in your plant. Select one separation unit used in the process. Explain why this unit is chosen in the plant and design the selected unit process. Write Matlab/Scilab module for heat and mass balance of one unit operation and redraw graph in economic analysis using MATLAB code.
