PHILOSOPHY Abstract Many people have their own outlook on what defines nursing.

There are many nursing philosophers such as Florence Nightingale, Jean Watson, Dorothea Orem, and many others. All of these people have many things that they believe in that are individualized to them and they all also share some beliefs. As a student nurse I have a lot of similar beliefs as some of them and I have some beliefs that

these people do not necessarily believe in. As I continue my education in nursing my beliefs may change but as of right now and the experience I have I strongly believe in them and hope to practice these beliefs to the best of my ability.

Nursing Philosophy A nurse is a caregiver and patient advocate and I believe that in order to be the best nurse one must posses certain qualities and skills. These qualities include a caring and compassionate heart, empathy, great listening skills, and most importantly a smile. Skills include knowledge, willingness to learn, and trust. A nurse is a person who must posses the outmost compasses for every type and kind of person there is in this world. As a nurse one must take care of people from every culture and ethnic background and there cannot be any discrimination. If the way someone is will stop you from giving the best care possible then one should not take care of that person. Every person has their rights to do what they believe in and that should not stop them from getting adequate and proper care. Many nurses just go about their day doing what they have to do to get through. The most effective nurses are the ones that truly care for each patient as if

PHILOSOPHY they were their own family. Many patients just want to be heard and listened to. A nurse has the ability to be the patients voice when other people do not want to listen. Nurses also have the responsibility of giving them their undivided attention to listen to what they have to say. A nurse that can do this for their patient then becomes the best advocate for that patient, ultimately leading to the best care and outcome for them.

I say that the most important quality a nurse can posses is a smile because no matter how a nurse is feeling, when they walk into a patients room nothing else matters only the patient. The least a nurse can do it put on a smile and show that patient that they are happy to be here helping them. Nurses also need to be knowledgeable and confident in the filed and be able to think on their toes. Nursing is not always by the textbooks. Every patient is different and every situation that arises needs to be changed and individualized to fit that patient and their care. The ability to change old habits and learn new things is a skill that is not always easy for people to do but as a nurse it is essential. Nursing is constantly changing and new theories and concepts are always evolving. Having the skill to learn new things and change old ways will not only benefit the patient but also the nurse. Practicing old medicine that no longer works is not good for anyone. In with the new, out with the old is what I always say. Finally, a nurse needs to be a trustworthy person, someone a patient can rely on and is willing to talk to. A patient needs to feel safe and comfortable talking to their nurse. Without this built trust a patient may not reveal everything they should.

PHILOSOPHY It is best to show patients that the nurse is on their side and build a trusting relationship. Florence Nightingale (1969) also believed that a nurse needs to be a

trustworthy person, she says in her book Notes on Nursing that, Every nurse should be one who is to be dependent upon, in other words, capable of being a confidential nurse. She does not know how soon she many find herself placed in such a situation; she must be no gossip, no vein talker; she should never answer questions about her sick except to those who have the right to ask them (p.125). This quote from her book is said perfectly, I truly believe that the patient deserves confidentiality. Once a patient feels like they can trust the nurse they are more likely to become willing to talk to them and tell them many things.

Conclusion As I continue my education in nursing I will strive to posses these qualities and skills. I strongly believe in these and truly think that in order to be a good nurse you must practice them. I always believe that I want to take care of someone how I would want to be taken care of.
