Santa and Mrs. Claus arrive in county

In Port Clinton on Saturday Santa and Mrs. Claus arrived by horse-drawn carriage preceded by a parade and welcomed by an a cappella chorus, all part of the Community Christmas celebration. Santa and Mrs. Claus arrived in Oak Harbor on the Portage Fire District Truck, and lit the Village Christmas tree to kick off the holiday season. This was followed by the annual Olde Fashioned Christmas Celebration. Nearly 250 children visited with Santa, enjoyed cookies & hot cocoa, and shopped in the secret Santa shop. Children can also visit Santa at the Log Cabin in Oak Harbor on Dec. 7 and 14, from 6-8 p.m. In Marblehead, Santa also arrived by fire truck. Santa had a very busy schedule on Saturday and it looks like hes going to be even busier in the weeks ahead.

Magruder announces Almendinger as new CEO

The Magruder Hospital Board of Trustees Chairman, Paul Druckenmiller, has announced that Todd Almendinger, the current Vice-President of Finance and Chief Financial Officer at Magruder, has been appointed President & CEO of the hospital. Todd is a proven leader at Magruder and his history with our organization goes back to serving his college internship here in healthcare administration. Having worked at a larger hospital for most of his career, we were fortunate to lure him back in 2006 as Vice-President of Finance and Chief Financial Officer. He has been part of the hospitals senior leadership team for six years and the Board is confident in his abilities as Magruders new President & CEO. Almendinger came to Magruder in 2006 after being the VicePresident of Finance and Chief Financial Officer of Grady Memorial Hospital in Delaware, Ohio for eighteen years. He earned his Bachelor of Science and Masters of Business Administration from Bowling Green State University and is a member of the Health Care Financial Management Association and the American College of Health Care Executives. Going back to the time when I served my college internship at Magruder under Robert Dumminger, this hospital has always been special to me. Growing up in Fremont I have always liked this area and when the opportunity came up in 2006 to work at Magruder, the move was right for me and my family. I am honored by the Boards decision, excited to continue to work with this truly great team of people and looking forward to advanc-

ing the hospitals mission of serving the area community, said Almendinger. Almendinger lives on Catawba Island with his wife Kathy and twin daughters Alyssa and Katie. His son Aaron is a former U.S. Marine and is currently attending The Ohio State University.

Bataan Memorial Intermediate Elementary to open January 4, 2013

Students, staff, and parents at Jefferson Elementary School received the news last week that they will start school in their new building Jan. 4, 2013. The renovation of the existing Bataan Memorial Elementary School is almost complete and the building has been transformed. Staff will need to have additional training to become acclimated to their new school, new technology, and learn new emergency procedures. To accomplish this, the school district requested waiver days from the State of Ohio for Bataan Intermediate. Therefore, students in grades 3, 4 and 5 only will not have school on Jan. 2 or 3. All other grade levels resume school on Jan. 2 after the holiday break. Champions for Children, the school districts before and after school program, will offer special programming for anyone that is in need of child care on Jan. 2 and 3 for children in grades 3, 4 and 5. Call 419.734.2815 for more information. Jefferson Elementary students and parents will receive letters and information about the traffic patterns and a special open house for students and their parents. The final day of school in the current building on Jefferson Street will be Friday, Dec. 21. The community will have an opportunity to see the renovated building at Bataan Memorial Intermediate Open House on Saturday, Jan. 12 from 10 a.m. to noon. The entire building was gutted and redesigned to resemble the new addition for Primary students (grades Pre K through 2) that opened at the beginning of the school year. Look for complete details and information on the school district website, www.pccsd.net or Like the Port Clinton City School District Facebook page.

Home Instead Senior Care sponsors Be a Santa to a Senior program

The area office of the Home Instead Senior Care network, the worlds largest provider of non-medical in-home care and companionship services for older adults, has joined several local agencies, Rite-Aid, Wal-Mart and Cuttin Loose at Lori Jos and Todd Puckett Agent-State Farm to provide gifts and companionship to seniors who otherwise might not receive either this holiday season. Many older adults continue to face a difficult economic climate, particularly those who live alone with no family nearby to help provide resources, said Enedelia Marez, general manager of the Home Instead Senior Care office serving Ottawa, Erie and Huron Counties. Thats where Be a Santa to a Senior can help. Before the holiday season, the participating local nonprofit organizations will identify needy and isolated seniors in Theres a way to buy insurance.

Lady Redskins begin season with 4-0 start

BY YANEEK SMITH The Port Clinton girls basketball team, after going 13-8 last season, is off to a good start, having won its first four games. Most recently, the 'Skins defeated Oak Harbor, 45-31, behind 13 points from Hope Thorbahn and 12 from Tiffany Colston. Port Clinton, which is now 1-0 in the Sandusky Bay Conference, took a 26-16 lead into the half. The Rockets (0-1, 0-1 SBC) were able to cut the deficit to eight at 34-26 after the third quarter, but the 'Skins pulled away in the fourth. Senior Abbie Gezo led Oak Harbor with eight points and Maria Boers chipped in with seven. Despite getting the win, Port Clinton head coach Toby Bickel is still hoping to see improvement out of his team. It's early in the season and there (were) lot of earlyseason mistakes, Bickel said. It's hard to get the kinks out with so little practice time. We have to do it when we're out on the floor at times we're doing that and at times we're not. I'd like to see us do a lot of things better now. But like I've said a hundred times, we have a very inexperienced team varsity-wise and it's going to take a little time to gel. I'm throwing some different combinations of kids out there to see who can do what. Bickel was pleased with the performance of his two top players. (Thorbahn & Colston) have to carry a lot of the load offensively, he said. With the inexperienced kids (we have), they're still trying to find their way. Port Clinton resumes action with home games against Margaretta, St. Mary CC and Norwalk. Port Clinton 55, Danbury 28 Port Clinton made easy work of their Ottawa County rival Danbury last week, defeating the Lakers, 55-28. The 'Skins went to work early, outscoring Danbury (0-2, 0-1 TAAC) 22-3 in the first quarter and 13-8 in the second to grab a 35-11 lead at halftime. A balanced scoring attack led Port Clinton as Colston scored 14 points and Thorbahn and Maddie Burns finished with 10 points apiece. Kristen Wood also contributed eight points. Danbury got eight points apiece from Tori Wright and Megan Stephens. Port Clinton 62, Sandusky 49 Port Clinton beat Sandusky in convincing fashion, defeating the Blue Streaks, 62-49, in a game that saw them lead by as many as 23 points. Thorbahn had her best game of the season as she led all scorers with 20 points and Colston chipped in with 17. Sophomore Emily Ashley had her best game of the season, scoring 12 points. Aschelle Smith-Crager led Sandusky (0-3, 0-1 NOL) with 11 points and Dorresha Green contributed nine points. Port Clinton 56, Woodmore 26 The 'Skins opened their season with a resounding defeat of Woodmore, defeating the Wildcats, 56-26. Port Clinton steadily built its lead, outscoring Woodmore, 9-6, in the first quarter and 13-9 in the second quarter to lead 22-15 at the half. From there, the 'Skins outscored the Wildcats (1-2, 0-1 NBC), 34-11, in the second half to cruise to victory. Grace Wierich led Woodmore with eight points.

Help The Salvation Army bring Christmas to all

Ottawa Countys Salvation Army programs offer opportunities to volunteer time and resources this holiday season. Ways that an individual or organization can help include:
The Red Kettle Campaign. The Salvation Army Port Clinton Service Unit, serving Ottawa County, needs bell ringers for their 19th Annual Red Kettle Campaign. Ringing the Bell for two hours is the equivalent of donating over $101 to The Salvation Army. There are seven locations in Ottawa County: Millers Market in Genoa, Community Market in Oak Harbor, Community Market in Port Clinton, Krogers and WalMart and Bassetts in Port Clinton, starting November 19th through Christmas Eve. 700 Volunteers are needed to meet the goal of $62,000. Last year over $60,000 was raised, and there are many more openings for bell-ringers this year. All monies raised by the Red Kettle Campaign go back into the community assisting with rent, mortgage evictions, utility disconnects, fuel and medications. There are many challenges in place this year. Port Clinton High School is challenging Oak Harbor High School. There is a Battle of the Badges competition that includes the Port Clinton Police Department, Fire Departments, Sheriffs Department, the US Coast Guard station and possible Sandusky Bay Station of the Border Control. There is also a Mayors Challenge. The Coats for Families Program is currently under way at The Salvation Army Port Clinton Service Unit. Last year 1,032 coats were donated, cleaned by Executive Cleaners then re-distributed to those in need of a warm, winter coat. There is a desperate need of childrens coats this year. Executive Cleaners is offering 10% off of your cleaning order if you drop off a coat for The Salvation Army. The Holiday Bureau The Salvation Army Port Clinton Service Unit is now accepting Holiday Bureau applications for Christmas assistance with food and toys. An application can be picked up and returned at Suite #800 at The Sutton Center in Port Clinton. Tree A Rama Charity Auction The 9th Annual Tree-A-Rama Charity Auction was held on Sunday, Dec. 2, at The Historic Mon Ami Restaurant and Winery. This years event raised over $15,700, even more than last year, with all proceeds going to the Salvation Army Toy Program. The top five items 1st Ron Howard and Cruisin Band 1-1/2 hours of free Entertainment - $1,000 2nd Fender/Squier Stratocaster Guitar with bag donated by donated by Another Day Guitar - $625.00 3rd Catawba Island Express Thomas the Train carrying a train full of Toys donated by Jeff & Peggy Mogg/Cindy Crawford - $500. The bidder donated this item back to The Salvation Army 4th Snowman with Lotto Tickets donated by Jack Bradley Realty - $400. The bidder donated this item back and was bid on for an additional $150 5th Ben Richmond Print donated by Nancy Havens, Final Cut certificate, donated by Hollywood Casino, Ski Trip, donated by Newport Dry Goods and Sunset Sail, donated by Mark & Linda Sprenger all went for $375 each. Last year The Salvation Army served nearly 1900 children with Christmas gifts this year we anticipate, once again, that over 1900 children will need gifts. Ech year The Salvation Army partners with local agencies and the Toys for Toys program out of Perrysburg. Although the Toys for Tots program is a great benefit to our County, they can only supply children up to the age of 12 years old. That is where the Tree-A-Rama idea stemmed from. The Salvation Army & Mon Ami partnered to be able to provide the 13-18 year old children with gifts, so all children in the home will receive gifts no matter the age. A big thanks from the Salvation Army and all those who benefit to all who made this possible, to John & Peggy Kronberg, The Mon Ami Staff, Jackie Bieberich, Mary Young, Kristina Willoughby, Karilyn, Cleary, Len Partin, Greg Pfiefer, Rich Saponari, The Tree A Rama Committee, The Worleys, all donors, bidders and the Community. Volunteer opportunities. Organizations, families and businesses that want to give back to their community through the Salvation Army can do so by volunteering to ring the bell, by donating coats or by making monetary gifts. 32nd Annual Nate's Holiday Benefit Breakfast. Join staff of the former Nate's Restaurant as they continue the tradition of supporting the community at 1812 Food & Spirits/Rosie's Bar & Grill. Sunday, December 9th 9am to 1pm. $9 Adults/$5 Children. Bring a non-perishable food item, new outer-wear or toy for the Salvation Army.

OH cheerleading squad finishes 2nd at Nancy Leaser competition

BY YANEEK SMITH Recently the Oak Harbor cheerleading squad competed at the Nancy Leaser Cheerleading Invitational, finishing in second place in the small varsity competition. On top of that, senior Taylor Blatt finished second in the individual competition, an impressive feat. The 11-person team of Blatt, Lindsey & Lauren Dials, Haley Smith, Samantha Wilkins, Brenna Franck, Miranda Mayes, Ashley Roose, Kaylie Hallett-Szyzmanski, Kristin McElhaney and Chelsey Coester finished behind Whitmer, the champion, in the small varsity competition and finished ahead of Norwalk. Team advisor Trisha Bauer was proud of her squad. I thought that the girls did really well, Bauer, who teaches at the Junior High, said. It was the best Ive seen them perform the routine. Weve been practicing the routine since July. Theyve been very committed. When they came off the mats on Saturday, Ive never seen them so excited. After they were finished, I knew that each and every one of them gave their all. They were so excited, Ive never seen them like that before. And I was very pleased to see that many people come out and support them. I know the girls were very pleased to have that support. Equally as impressive was Blatts performance in the individual routine. Taylor has told me that she was going to do an individual routine her senior year and Im very proud of her, Bauer said. It takes a lot of guts to perform by yourself. I thought she did a fantastic job. The event, which saw roughly 25 squads perform, is named in honor of Mrs. Nancy Leaser, who tragically died in 1999 in a car accident. Mrs. Leaser, who passed away at the age of 50, was a member of the Benton-Carroll-Salem Board of Education, worked as the schools cheerleading advisor for roughly 15 years and was known for her passion for and commitment to the study body in the Oak Harbor school system. She had two kids with her husband, Tom, sons Jameson and Andrew, and worked for 15 years at H.B.M. Health Care services in Oak Harbor. In her honor, the proceeds from the event help to support the Oak Harbor cheerleading program. The money goes to support our cheerleading program, Bauer said. Any time we want to buy new uniforms, go to competitions, anything that we purchase, thats basically our fundraiser. The mats that we use to hold our competition are very expensive, too.

cial accounts and also their continued contributions to promoting the arts in this area. We are not planning to move to the Carolinas, Florida, Arizona or certainly not the Northeast. We feel the grass is greener right where we are, great scenery and even more so, wonderful people. Jodie & I will see you all around town. We have met and will miss the wonderful customers and the restaurants that supplied the food for our venues, the remarkable local and regional talent of the musical groups that have performed on our Gallery Patio, and last but certainly not least, the amazing talents of our local & regional artists who have demonstrated on our patio and within the Gallery. To all, the Gallery and community thank you. For more information, call the Gallery at 419-798-3318.
