Management Development Program on

Managerial Effectiveness through Innovative Leadership

Date : 17th December, 2012 Time : 10 AM - 5 PM Venue : Habitat World, India Habitat Centre, Lodhi Road, New Delhi -110003 (Entry from Gate 3 on Vardhman Marg)

Leadership and management are two terms that are often confused. Leadership is the ability to influence a group toward the achievement of goals. The source of this influence may be formal, such as provided by the managerial rank in an organization. Many a times, management positions come with some degree of formally designated authority, therefore, a person may assume a leadership role simply because of the position he or she holds in the organization. But neither all leaders are managers; nor, for that matter, are all managers leaders. Just because an organization provides its managers with certain formal rights is no assurance that they will be able to lead effectively. We find that non-sanctioned leadershipthat is, the ability to influence that arises outside the formal structure of the organization is often as essential or more important than formal influence. In other words, leaders can emerge from within a group as well as by formal appointment to lead a group.

Organizations are increasingly searching for managers who can exhibit innovative leadership qualities. They want leaders with vision and the charisma to facilitate attainment of organizational goals . The visible leadership effectiveness may be a result of exhibiting the right behavior at the right time, the evidence is quite strong that people have a relatively uniform perception of what a leader should be like. They attribute leadership to people who are smart, personable, verbally adept and are able to connect to the people with alignment of competence within the team members to provide a conducive environment for individual as well organization growth and development, to the degree that managers project these qualities, others are likely to deem them as leaders. For managers concerned with how to fill key positions in their organization with effective leaders, tests and interviews help to identify people with specific leadership qualities matching to the needs of the situation. In addition to focusing on leadership style selection, managers need to invest time and well directed efforts in leadership training.
