Huddersfield Jazz Guitar Society

Newsletter No. 13 September 2012

Hi Jazz Guitar Fans,

Adrian and Ian, who are largely responsible for compiling the newsletter, were away gigging during the last meeting, but have no fear here is a review of the evenings proceedings kindly supplied by Martin (with help from Tom, Ken and Charles), with some great pictures from Jamie. Tom and Charles kicked off the evening with a few numbers with Charles brandishing his new Ibanez 6-string bass. Numbers included Blue Monk and Lady Be Good. Next up were Chris and Dave with a number of tasteful duets (Body and Soul, Beautiful Love and a blues).

Robin played a great chord melody rendition of "Don't Get Around Much Any More". A new playing partnership was formed when Idle Guits members Colin and Richard took to the stage with well received performances of Satin Doll and Moonglow.

Ken Steers teamed up with Jamie for a few impromptu numbers (Days of Wine and Roses, a grooving rendition of Wave followed up with a Bb blues).

After the break and raffle we moved straight into more music with Ken, Charles and myself performing Sunny and Blue Bossa.

Up again were Chris and Dave with Round Midnight, All the Things You Are and Stella by Starlight. We rounded off the evening with newcomer and fellow Nu Popes member Clinton MacFarlane on bass with Jamie and myself on guitars for a laid back arrangement of "So What". During a quiet moment in our recent French trip, Adrian conceived the idea of a jazz guitar quiz. We thought it would be a bit of fun so here it is. Write your answers on a sheet of paper and include your name. The people with the most correct answers will have their names put into a hat and the winner will be able to choose from our comprehensive collection of jazz guitar cds in the raffle prize box. Good Luck! 1. Name the make, model (and guitar size) of the guitar most closely associated with Charlie Christian. Which guitarist followed Tal Farlow into the Red Norvo Trio? Which famous jazz guitarist recorded with Al Cohn under the pseudonym of Sir Osbert Haberdasher? John McLaughlins first legitimate jazz outing was on an LP with pianist Gordon Beck. What was the album called and in what year was it released? This late 1960s poll-winning British guitarist was also Scott Walkers MD. What is his name?

Give the names of four tunes based on the chord changes of Ive Got Rhythm. The late 1950s recording Jazz Studio One with, amongst others, Paul Quinichette and Frank Foster, featured some fantastic guitar by Sir Jonathan Gasser. What was his real name? The classic Barney Kessel/Julie London album Julie is Her Name was followed up by Julie is Her Name vol2. Who plays guitar on this followup? Which make and model of guitar was used by George Barnes from the Early 60s until his death in 1977. Jimmy Raney recorded a number of albums featuring other prominent jazz guitarists. Name four of these players. Billy Bean recorded two influential albums in 1958/9 with John Pisano, What were they called? Whose ES175 did Jim Hall acquire through a trade against his black alnico Les Paul Custom? Name four guitarists who passed through the ranks of the Chico Hamilton band. Who recorded several albums on the Impulse label with titles associated with witchcraft? Did Pat Metheneys ES-175 start life as a single or double pickup model? Who famously said I spent an entire afternoon in San Francisco trying to catch Wes thumb in a car door? Who was the guitarist who recorded with both Elvis Presley and Gary Burton? The Jazz/rock guitarist/vibes player with Timebox and Patto quoted a surprising combination of Bert Weedon and Albert Ayler as primary influences. Who was he and what instrument did he use in the above bands? Two respected jazz guitarists wrote or co-wrote the classic jazz standards; Bluesette and Lullaby of Birdland name both.

Meetings
The first Tuesday of the month at The Head of Steam : Huddersfield Railway Station (see http://www.theheadofsteam.co.uk/huddersfield )

As previously mentioned, in the last newsletter, we are going to re-instate the idea of a selected tune sent out on a regular basis. These will be played, as a group following a short discourse (analysis of harmony, structure, tonal centres etc) by a HJGS member. The first of these will be, Afternoon in Paris, presented by Darren at the Oct meeting. Of course members are free to play it at an earlier meet and are encouraged to look at it as soon as possible. Arian has promised to provide another tune/discourse on his return from his summer commitments. Remember the society needs YOUR views and input so, if you want to provide a short introduction/discourse for a tune yourself or make any suggestions for a tune, please speak to a committee member. We have already had some other interesting ideas put forward which we are looking into. YOUR ideas are both vital and welcome. It is YOUR society and the committee is there entirely on YOUR behalf. Please, please get involved if you can!
The timetable for meetings for the rest of the year now looks like this: 2012 4th Sept:* Seminar on Effective Accompaniment presented by Darren Dutson-Bromley

2nd Oct: Players evening. Short discourse on Afternoon in Paris (circulated prior to the meeting) given by Darren 6th Nov:*Seminar on Survival Skills part 1 by Adrian 4th Dec: HJGS showcase gig (hope youre all working on something)

* please note that in order to ensure an effective combination of complete

workshop and some time for playing, these sessions will commence at 8:30

on the dot.

This guitar was set up by the luthier at HobGoblin in Leeds. A new mahogany bridge was made to increase intonation of sound at higher resonances. The guitar has a mike fitted along with a tail piece jack pin. This would enable a higher quality amplification system to be fitted if required. The guitar is basically unmarked and comes complete with fitted hard case . This is a beautiful instrument and plays withe a lovely action and a very loud mellow tone. I'm selling simply and sadly because I am elderly and arthritus makes playing this guitar difficult. I am now having to play my manouche on my Peerless Renaissance.. These guitars come up for sale rarely and this is a beauty.
Both guitar and case are AS NEW and have never left my house in the 4 years I've owned them Cheers Rod (Scarborough) 07980913390 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------De` Armond `RED` Jazz Guitar pickup .
