ON THE LOOKOUT FOR LETTERS: LETTER RECOGNITION AND ALPHABET RECOGNITION

Activity Title: On the Lookout for Letters Grade Level Range: Pre-K to 1st Purpose: ELA(K) 2. Demonstrate letter-sound association, including matching letters to corresponding spoken sounds and blending letter sounds into one-syllable words, using printed materials. 3. Identify upper- and lower-case letters. 2. Identify applications and operations of various technology systems. 10. Design original works using digital tools. 21. Demonstrate understanding of spoken words, syllables, and sounds (phonemes). [RF.K.2] 1 b. Create original works as a means of personal or group expression 2 d. Contribute to project teams to produce original works or solve problems 6 a. Understand and use technology systems Description: In this activity, the teacher will be working with students on letter recognition and understanding what objects begin with what letter sound. In the activity, they will use the websites for the alphabet, play games with the alphabet, and create a book on the alphabet. This lesson should take about 2 30 minutes lessons. Activity Preparation: The teacher should have the websites for the activities up on the computer, letter cards, and then have magazines, newspapers, and booklets with the letters ready for the end of the activity. Activity Procedure: Day 1: 1. The teacher will talk to the students about the alphabet. Teacher will tell the students that when we talk about the alphabet we start at A and it goes to Z.

2. Then the teacher will tell the students that each letter has a sound that is associated with it. Teacher will say that we are going to listen to the alphabet song. 3. Teacher will then go to this website for the alphabet song: http://havefunteaching.com/videos/alphabet-videos/alphabet-video/ 4. Students will listen to the alphabet song. After listening to the alphabet song, the teacher will hold up letter cards and ask the class to recognize the letters on the cards. 5. Then the teacher will have the students go to the computer lab and go to this website: http://www.earobics.com/gamegoo/games/pawpark/pawpark.html 6. On this activity, the students will play a game called PawPark and will match the letters on the Kangaroos. This will allow the students to work on the letter recognition. Day 2: 1. The teacher will start by reviewing the alphabet song from day 1. 2. Students will listen and sing along to the alphabet song 3. Teacher will then hold up letter cards and ask students to suggest items that begin with that letter. 4. Then teacher will hand out the booklets for the students to make the Alphabet booklets. 5. Teacher will tell students that for the alphabet booklets, we are going to use magazines and newspapers and find objects that match the letter on the page and cut them out and past them on the booklet. 6. Teacher can tell the students that also, they can draw some of the pictures. 7. The teacher will also tell the students that they need to write the letters in the booklet themselves, upper and lower case. 8. Computer lab

Assessment: The assessment will be on whether the student learned the alphabet. The rubric listed is for the final project. Since this is for a younger grade level, the students may not be able to use all of the computer items such as the mouse like an adult, so this will be a beginning learning process for the students.
