December 11, 2012 Dear Parents and Guardians: It is our pleasure to offer interested grade 8 students the opportunity of achieving a secondary credit in advance of their grade nine school year. Please read through this information, and indicate your interest with a response. LEARNING STRATEGIES GRADE 9 OPEN LEVEL (GLS10) SKILLS FOR SUCCESS IN SECONDARY SCHOOL This course explores learning strategies and helps students become more independent learners while increasing their personal management skills. Students will learn how to develop and apply a range of strategies to improve their learning and achievement, including communication and planning skills. Grade 8 students have an opportunity to earn a full credit. This program does not allow for granting of half credits. Students must make a serious commitment to attend all classes and to complete all assignments for this 90 hour course. School expectations regarding respect and responsibility will continue to be implemented with regular communication between the teacher and supporting principal. The proposed program will be provided at PDCI by a secondary teacher. It will run for 2 hours, two days per week after school, beginning in January and ending in June, pending sufficient student interest. Times for each session will be from 3:45pm to 6:00pm. In addition, one Saturday session may be explored. Transportation from the home school will be provided to support participation, with parents or guardians responsible for pick up of their student at PDCI at 6:00pm. Additional funding for materials has been sought to provide all necessary supplies. Registration will be accepted on a first to respond basis with the expected return of all applications to the school office by December 10.
