PREFERENCES PDF

Welcome to the Vyzex Pocket POD Preferences Guide. Please remember to check back at the Line 6 website (www.line6.com) for updates to the program and to this document.

Preferences Guide? That sure sounds boring!

Okay, lets be honest here The preferences arent the most glorious part of any program. Regardless of this fact, they are a treasure trove of useful options and hidden features that are well worth exploring. Well do our best to keep you awake as you read this relatively quick and (highly) useful guide, so please bear with us as we cover the basics.

Ok, fine Ill read it. Where do we start?

As you might expect, the preferences settings of Vyzex Pocket POD govern how the program operates. Once we get into the various dialogs in the preferences, however, youll notice that many of preferences are specific to particular control types in the GUI. In other words, many of the preferences only make sense if you know about the control types used to build the Vyzex Pocket POD GUI. Lets check these control types out first It will make the preferences much more understandable later.

The Controls
Knob Controls
Knobs are the most common control in the Vyzex Pocket POD GUI, and offer a number of options that are not obvious on first glance: 1. Dragging on any knob edits its value according to either a rotary or linear mode. Rotary is the default1. 2. Right (or CTRL on Mac) clicking on any knob launches the controls pop-up value selector menu. 3. Double-clicking on any knob launches its pop-up keyboard entry dialog. 4. Typing in a number while a knob has focus also launches the double-click pop-up keyboard entry dialog. You give the knob focus by clicking on it. Since were using the DRIVE knob as our example above, here are the value selector menu and keyboard entry dialog that are called from this control with a right (CTRL on Mac) click and a double click respectively:

KNOB KEYBOARD ENTRY DIALOG (WINDOWS)

KNOB VALUE SELECTOR MENU (WINDOWS)

Youll note that the value selector list doesnt include every value between 0 & 100: This is because Pocket PODs drive parameter is actually a number between 0 & 63, which Vyzex Pocket POD converts to percentage values for more intuitive display and editing. Although you cant select values such as 7%, 9% or 34% from the value selector menu, these in-between values can be entered in the keyboard entry dialog: The closest legitimate value will be selected when this occurs. Another nice feature of the keyboard entry dialog is that you also dont need to type the % either. Well explore all the options for the knob and the other controls later on in this guide when we get into the preferences dialogs. For now were going to describe the default operation of all controls. 2 Vyzex Pocket POD Preferences Manual

Unless you are entering percentage values, the Keyboard Entry dialog handles what you type in as text, not as numbers. This means that certain knobs (Amp Model for example) have a keyboard entry dialog that expects you to enter the name of your selection such as Tweed Blues or Fuzz Box. Partial names will work to make a selection, but when there are similarly named items like the eight Line 6 amp models (Line 6 Clean to Line 6 Insane), youll need to type in more than just Line 6 to select a specific one.

Text Entry Controls

Text entry controls allow you to enter text data into the currently loaded tone: The most obvious text entry control is the Channel Name control, but the Song, Guitarist, Band, Author, Notes 1 & Notes 2 controls in the LINE 6 TONE NOTES section of the editor are also text entry controls. Text entry controls are very straightforward: They open a dialog that prompts you for the new text. When you click the OK button or hit your keyboards ENTER key this new text replaces what is currently in the control. The NAME area of the Vyzex Pocket POD GUI actually contains three different controls: On the left is a list control (explained below, shown as 1A: in the illustration above), the actual Channel Name text entry control (shown as ACHTUNG TONE) and an edit icon (*) that appears whenever you have make an edit to the current tone. This icon disappears when the current channel is stored and is not directly editable.

List Controls
List controls are used in Vyzex Pocket POD to edit parameters that benefit a text display of the current selection - Such as the Amp, FX and Cabinet Model parameters. 1. Dragging on any list control edits its value according to either a horizontal or vertical mode. Horizontal is the default. 2. Clicking on any pop-up lists triangular icon launches its pop-up value selector menu. 3. Right (or CTRL on Mac) clicking anywhere on any list control also launches its pop-up value selector menu. 5. Double-Clicking on any list control launches its alternate pop-up menu entry dialog. 6. Typing in a number while a list control has focus also launches the pop-up keyboard entry dialog. You give the list control focus by clicking on it first.

Toggle Controls
Toggle controls can act as either true on/off toggles or as momentary buttons. Simply click on any toggle control to activate it: If the toggle is a momentary button, it will revert to its off position shortly after you release the mouse, otherwise it will remain in the on position until you click on it a second time. All of the vintage-style toggle switches in Vyzex Pocket POD (i.e. Dist, Drive and EQ shown to the left) are on/off toggles. Most of the POD style black chicklet buttons in Vyzex Pocket POD are momentary buttons, with the exception of the STORE, SYNC and BANK EDIT buttons.

Common Key Accelerators & Other Editing Short Cuts

Clicking and dragging on the editors controls are not the only way to perform edits: Whenever your mouse is positioned over a control, the mouse wheel (if present) will allow you to step through the controls range of values. Additionally, your keyboards comma (,) and period (.) keys serve as -1 and +1 editing commands respectively. As their shifted key symbols suggest (< and > respectively), these keys allow you to make the currently selected control less or more depending on which one you press. Finally, each control has a built-in default value that can be instantly set by pressing CTRL-SPACE while the mouse pointer is over the control. Typically, the default value is the controls minimum value, but it can also be the center value in the case of pan controls, for example. Now we are ready to explore the programs preferences dialogs: These are accessed under the Options>Preferences menu item when running Windows XP/Vista, and under the Vyzex Pocket POD -> Preferences menu when running the program on Mac OS X.

The Preferences Dialogs

The Instrument Setup Tab

The first tab in the Preferences dialog is Instrument Setup: This tab allows you to scan for Pocket PODs existence on all MIDI ports selected for use by Vyzex Pocket POD. If the procedure is successful, the program will be reconfigured automatically to use the ports on which Pocket POD was detected. If the procedure fails you will be notified by a warning dialog. If your Pocket POD is not found when Auto Sense is invoked, this means that either your Pocket POD is not connected via its USB cable, powered by its AC adapter or plugged into your guitar (The guitar cable is important to turn Pocket POD on, incidentally). If all of these conditions are met and you still cannot Auto Sense your Pocket POD, please ensure all available MIDI ports are selected within the MIDI->MIDI In Ports and MIDI>MIDI Out Ports dialogs.

The Patch Edit Tab

The Patch Edit Tab contains settings that apply when you are editing individual tones (or patches). Std Mouse Editing The Standard Mouse Editing option sets how list controls and knobs (when knobs are set to Std Mouse Editing) respond to mouse drag operations: Left/Right Drag sets the controls to operate horizontally while Up/Down drag sets the controls to expect vertical drags instead. The Sensitivity control allows you to adjust how large an effect mouse drags will have on the parameter edit.

Vyzex Pocket POD Preferences Manual

Knob Mouse Editing This preference governs the drag operation of all knob controls in the Vyzex Pocket POD GUI: When set to Std Mouse Editing, knobs will operate linearly Either in a horizontal or vertical mode depending on the setting of the Standard Mouse Editing option above. When set to Rotary (the default), knob controls react to mouse clicks and drags in a circular mode that simulates the operation of a physical knob turned by hand. Popup Info For By default, this option is set to All Controls, which causes every control in the Vyzex Pocket POD GUI to show a pop-up tool-tip whenever the mouse cursor is hovered over them. Along the bottom of the Vyzex Pocket POD application is a grey status bar area that is usually empty. Youll notice that this area will display helpful information if you hover the mouse over any of the toggle controls in the tone management console area (the L6T, SET, CHANNEL and BANK columns). The following settings are possible for the Popup Info For preference: None disables all pop-up tool tips. Status bar information is still displayed. Knobs and Sliders will disable pop-up tool tips for momentary buttons only. All Controls enables pop-up tool tips for all controls including momentary buttons. All Controls in Status Bar relocates the tool-tips to the status bar.

Auto Menu When checked, this preference disables the drag operation of all List Selector controls in the Vyzex Pocket POD GUI and forces them to launch their value selector menu whenever they are clicked. This is a simpler mode of list selector operation for Mac users who have a single button mouse or for Windows users who dislike right-click operations. Auto Menu will also disable the double-click entry mode dialog of all list selector controls including the Total Delay control which features a convenient text entry mode. This is the main reason Auto Menu is not selected as a default when you first install the program, but feel free to enable this option if you prefer it.

Update Patch on Activate By default, this setting is enabled. It ensures that Pocket POD is always updated with the contents of the editors channel editing buffer whenever you switch focus to another program or to the bank editor within the Vyzex application. There are certain times you may wish to disable this feature (such as when you are getting preset tones from Pocket PODs BAND and STYLE banks and wish to store and manage these tones within the editors USER bank). Just remember that if this option is disabled, you will need to manually press the CHANNEL PUT button whenever you switch between bank editing and channel editing in order to refresh your Pocket PODs editing buffer with the current channel that is being edited. If the explanation above seems confusing, dont worry: Just leave this option turned on and the program will always make sure the current editing buffer has been transferred to your Pocket POD for auditioning.

Store In Options Its important that you understand that STORE operations occur between the editors channel editor and user bank. They do not directly affect the user bank onboard your Pocket POD, nor do they include any save to disk operations. Please read the Tone Management With Vyzex Pocket POD companion PDF for more information on this subject. By default, Vyzex Pocket POD is configured to automatically discard any edits you make to a channel tone whenever you load another tone from the editors user bank. This mode of operation matches the way your Pocket POD operates without the editor connected, in that Pocket POD discards changes that you make to the currently loaded tone if you load another without first pressing the front panel SAVE button. If you prefer, you can override this always discard unstored changes operation by setting the Store In Options to either Manual Store or Automatic Store. Manual Store will cause Vyzex Pocket POD to notify you via the Store In dialog whenever you attempt to load a new tone over unstored edits:

This dialog lets you choose whether to Store the edits and move on to the next tone, Discard the edits and move on, or Cancel and stay within the current tone. On the other hand, Automatic Store simply assumes all edits you make are worthwhile and the program will automatically store changes to the currently edited tone when you load another for editing. The Bank Edit Tab

The Bank Edit Tab in Vyzex Pocket POD only contains two settings, both of which govern the drag and drop operations within the programs bank editor. Drag and Drop (Int) sets the program operation whenever you drag one bank entry over another and release the mouse: Swap will trade the entries for each other, Paste will copy the dragged entry over the destination entry, while Insert will insert the dragged entry into the bank location just before the destination location (i.e. 3B is just before 3C, for example). When the default swap option is selected, the following keys perform a temporary mode switch with regards to drag operations: Drag + no key: Swap Drag + CTRL key: Paste Drag + SHIFT key: Insert

Drag and Drop (Ext) sets the program operation that occurs whenever you drag tones between the collection view and the bank. Paste is the default.

The Studio Tab

The studio tab only contains two items in Vyzex Pocket POD: Auto Sense on Program Execution configures the program to always search for Pocket POD when it is launched, and then to automatically use Pocket PODs MIDI IN and OUT ports when they have been found. This is on by default and is required if you want the program to be self-managing with regards to MIDI port settings. Auto Load Temporary Elements when Create New Set defines how Vyzex Pocket POD reacts to the creation of a new set file from its FILE=->New menu item. When enabled, Vyzex will always request your Pocket PODs current user bank and editing buffer when you create a new set file. Otherwise, Vyzex will simply create an empty set containing blank tones and leave it at that.

The Paths/Misc Tab

The single preference in this Tab enables automatic saving and reloading of the last loaded SET file. When selected (and Auto Load Temporary Elements when Create New Set has been disabled, see below), Vyzex Pocket POD will automatically save the currently open SET file to disk when you exit the program and will then automatically open it again when you restart. If Auto Load Temporary Elements when Create New Set (found in the studio tab) is also enabled, the Auto Save and Reload Session option will not be able to reopen the last set file on program launch as described above. Instead, the program will always get its starting SET data from your Pocket POD. Please disable the Auto Load Temporary Elements when Create New Set option if you wish to use the Auto Save and Reload Session option.

This concludes the Vyzex Pocket POD Preferences PDF Manual. Its a good idea for you to also read the companion PDF manuals like the Vyzex Pocket POD Quick-Start PDF, Vyzex Pocket POD Users Guide and Preset Management with Vyzex Pocket POD for a more complete view of how the editor operates.
