Task 9 Formal Proposal

Title of Magazine
I have chosen to name my magazine The Note. There are quite a few reasons I have chosen this, and I went through a few other similar ones, making small alterations, to get to it. I began with simply Note. I have already decided to go for a more mature, uniformed, and minimalistic looking magazine. I believed that Note is very simple, and minimalistic, and I believe that it would have fit in with this particular house style. I decided to change it though, as I believed it was too simple. Therefore, decided to add the prefix high to it, to create High Notes. It could have been stylized as Hi-Notes. I enjoyed this name for a while, but it started to sound a bit silly. I then decided to go for a more in your face approach. So, I put the prefix the to it, to create The Note. This, I believed, sounds more of a statement. The The also makes it seem like it is the one. It is THE Note.

Choice of Genre
I have decided to choose indie-pop/rock as the genre for my magazine. I have chosen this for a few reasons: I have some knowledge on the genre; I enjoy the genre; and it reflects me. I have also realised that this genre of music is quite popular within the age range I am aiming for, therefore, it seems like a logical choice. If it went on sale, it would sell well.

My Target Audience
My target audience would be late teenagers to young adults (16-21). It would also be aimed at both males and female equally. As I am going for a more mature and intellectual magazine, the style will be quite formal and uniformed, therefore, the audience would also be mature and intellectual.

Initial Ideas for Front Cover

For my front cover, I am planning to go a close up on an artists face. They would be dressed very formal, but casual. They would have a unique look to them, which would reflect the individuality that many artists attempt to achieve. The background would be a single block colours. The reason I have chosen to do this, would be to create a minimalistic style. The colour would be light and pasty looking. I have not decided on the actual colour though. This would depend on the hair colour, complexion, and colour clothing of the subject of the photo. Obviously, I would not pick a colour that would clash with the subject, nor would I choose one that blends too much with them. The masthead would be a banner, which goes across the top. It would be written in a large, bold font, and colours white. This would, once again, reflect the minimalistic style I am going for in this magazine.

Initial Ideas for Contents Page

For my contents page, I would follow the style that I create for the front cover: block colour background (this time a different colour); block, white title across the top in a bold font; and a simplistic photo, usually with the subject wearing formal but casual clothing. The masthead of the

magazine would also be present at the top of the page, next to the title. I will use 2 photos on the contents page. They would both represent two of the articles in the magazine. They would have a title next to them (which would be the title of the article), and a page number. The contents would be split into sections. Each sections title would be similar to the masthead/title large, bold, white font.

Initial ideas for Double Page Spread

For my double page spread (DPS) article, it would once again follow the house style of the magazine. The background of the article would be a single block colour (perhaps with a slight gradient, going towards a lighter shade). The photo would be a medium/medium close shot, and the subject would be holding a prop/instrument. They would be posed in a very formal fashion. It would connote class, but both fun. The article would be on the opposite page, and would be written in either a box, or without a box. It depends on the colours.

Initial ideas for photographs

The photograph for the front cover would be a medium-close/close up. The subject would be wearing formal, but casual clothes. It connotes class, but both fun. They would have a very straight expression on his face, but with a look of concentration they are looking at the audience. The contents page will include two photos. The first will be of a group of people (a band). They would be gather in a group, and it will have a white background (once again, reflect the simplicity). They would be holding instruments. The second photo for the contents page would be the same subject of the front cover photo. The shot will be a medium-close up, and would be a side shot of their face. They would be looking at the camera. Finally, the photo for the double page spread article would be of an artist, standing in a very confused pose. They would also have a look of confusion on their face. This reflects the article that would accompany it, which will talk about the confusion this artist has had with finding themselves. The background would be a single block colour, which would be different to the contents page, which would be different from the front cover.
