TheYear of GracepromotedbytheAustralianBishops
invites us to look at the way we celebrate the liturgy
of the Church, parcularly Eucharist, as a means of
deepening our life of prayer both corporately and
personally. One of the elements of the Churchs
liturgy that is oen overlooked is the place of silence
intheliturgy.

YoumayrememberthatsomemeagoIinvitedyour
commentsabouthowsilencecouldbeintroducedinto
our celebraon of the Massas is required by the
General Instrucon of the Roman Missal.Mythanksto
those parishioners who took the me to contribute
theirthoughtsontheissue.

Aer giving the maer some more thought, and

having considered the submissions from parishioners,
I would like to suggest a few small changes to the
celebraon of Mass in the parish as a rst step to
enhancing our already very prayerful celebraons of
theliturgyoftheChurch.

Essenally, I would like to see a denite period of

silence(ofabout30secondsduraon)atthefollowing
pointsintheliturgy:

a. During the Penitenal Act, aer the Presider has

invited us to prepare ourselves to celebrate the
sacred mysteries. This will give us the opportunity
bothasacommunityandpersonallytocalltomind
those areasof our lives which are in need of Gods
healing.
b. During the Collect, aer the Presider says Let us
pray, which will give us the opportunity to call to
mindthose thingsforwhichwemightwishtopray
duringourcelebraonofEucharist.
c. During the Liturgy of the Word, aer the First
Reading and before the Responsorial Psalm, aer
the Second Reading and before the Gospel
Acclamaon, and aer the Homily,all of whichwill
giveustheopportunitytoprayerfullyreectonthe
WordofGodthathasbeenproclaimedtous.

These changes will begin from the rst Sunday in

November,whichisSunday4thNovember.

I am aware that these changes might take some

geng used to, but I would ask for paence from all
of us as we seek to deepen our corporate life of
prayer by further enhancing our liturgical
celebraons.
