SERIES
SPECIFICATIONS & COURSE

These machine technology courses will help students master the fundamentals of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing. The series covers the basics of GD&T, including symbols, abbreviations, datums, feature control frames, basic rules and forms, perpendicularity, angularity, parallelism, profile, runout, and virtual condition. The content has been updated to comply with the ASME Y14.5-1994 standards.

OUTLINE

The Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing series is designed for anyone who needs to interpret GD&T prints. It does not assume any previous knowledge of GD&T; however, a basic understanding of blueprint conventions is suggested. Many of the terms used are explained or defined throughout the courses, so students are not required to have a GD&T vocabulary to understand the content.

This series is intended to be used as an essential component in your industrial machining preparation program. Each lesson is designed to provide the background knowledge necessary to develop a fundamental understanding of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing. Each lesson has specific objectives that identify the anticipated level of understanding associated with the information presented. While we cannot guarantee student success, our experience indicates that those who complete the training are likely to accomplish the stated objectives. Furthermore, if these lessons are built into a total curriculum which includes practice in the working environment, it will provide students with the knowledge necessary to master machine trades.

GDT001 Introduction to GD&T Purpose: This course introduces the importance of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing, the history behind GD&T, and important dimensioning and tolerancing terminology. The basics of this method of dimensioning and tolerancing establish the proper foundation in which to learn a new concept in completely defining a part. Objectives: Understand the need for GD&T standards; define geometric dimensioning and tolerancing and differentiate it from the coordinate dimensioning method; understand the key principles of GD&T; explain the advantages of GD&T; and understand nominal size, actual size, tolerance, bilateral tolerance, unilateral tolerance, limits of size, and limit dimensioning. GDT002 Symbols & Abbreviations Purpose: Geometric dimensioning and tolerancing is a symbolic language used to communicate manufacturing operations. This course introduces the basic symbols and abbreviations that are used in this language. After completing this course, students will be able to interpret symbols used to identify geometric characteristics and abbreviations, define important terms relating to GD&T, and explain the material modifiers MMC, LMC, and RFS. Objectives: Identify basic geometric dimensioning and tolerancing symbols; interpret commonly used GD&T abbreviations and symbols; understand the effect of the three modifiers; and know important terms. GDT003 Dimension Origins Datums Purpose: This course introduces students to datums. Datums enable the blueprint reader to properly interpret the design orientation in relation to the datum three-plane concept. This three-plane concept for cylindrical and noncylindrical parts provides the part orientation required for proper manufacturing. Objectives: Understand the concept of datums; identify the datum feature symbols; identify datum targets; and understand the three-plane concept for both circular and non-circular parts. GDT004 Feature Control Frames Purpose: This course introduces the feature control frame symbol of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing. These feature control frames consist of three primary types and are attached to features with four different methods. Objectives: Understand what feature control frames contain; read feature control frames; identify the different types of feature control frames; and explain the methods of attachments to features. GDT005 Basic Rules Purpose: GD&T, like any other standard or practice, has rules that play an important part in the standard. These rules also control certain drafting practices and provide guidelines for designers as well as readers of drawings. This course will teach students how to define the basic rules of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing and how to apply the basic principles involved. Objectives: Understand the rules involved, including the limits of size, material condition, pitch diameter, and datum/virtual condition rules; explain the control provided by the rules; and properly apply each of the rules.

GDT006 Form Tolerances Purpose: This course begins the introduction of the form and orientation controls. During this course, the first four form controls are presented to establish a knowledge base. Objectives: Interpret and apply the specific tolerance for straightness, flatness, circularity, and cylindricity. GDT007 Perpendicularity & Modifier Applications Purpose: This course teaches students the various design applications for perpendicularity. Proper interpretation of the various perpendicularity applications is important for proper part assembly. This course also illustrates applications of the modifiers with an orientation control. Objectives: Explain methods of specifying perpendicularity and understand the application of modifiers and how they affect orientation tolerances. GDT008 Angularity & Parallelism Purpose: This course introduces two more geometric orientation controls. These are critical to know if drawings are to be properly interpreted. These two controls complete the angular controls that are provided in the geometric system of symbols. Objectives: Explain the methods of specifying both angularity and parallelism and understand how they may affect orientation tolerances. GDT009 Profile & Runout Purpose: This course introduces students to the last of the form and orientation controls. The total runout control is one of the most critical controls that can be specified. Learning the proper interpretation of these controls will round out students knowledge of the form and orientation controls. Objectives: Understand the applications of profile of a line, profile of a surface, circular runout, and total runout. GDT010 Virtual & Resultant Conditions Purpose: The course introduces students to the concepts of virtual condition and resultant condition. These conditions ensure interchangeability of parts within an assembly. Interchangeability becomes an important issue when components are manufactured in one country and assembled in another. Objectives: Define virtual condition; define resultant condition; and calculate condition for features. GDT011 Positional Tolerancing Purpose: A finished product is often composed of many parts which must mate with each other. To ensure a precise fit between mating parts and their features, location tolerancing is used as an effective tool of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing. Objectives: Explain location, position, projected, and composite positional tolerancing.

GDT012 Coaxiality & Bi-Directional Tolerancing Purpose: Location tolerancing is used to ensure the precise fit between mating parts and their features. This course introduces two additional methods of location tolerancing. Objectives: Explain coaxiality and concentricity and explain bi-directional positional tolerancing. GDT013 Applying Positional Tolerancing Purpose: This course shows that position tolerances are not arbitrary numbers. Rather, they are calculated values based on the actual sizes of the mating features on the respective parts, including the fasteners themselves. Objectives: Identify and calculate positional tolerances for floating fastener applications, fixed fastener applications, and three piece assemblies. GDT014 Interpreting GD&T Drawings Purpose: This course is the summary lesson for the series. Previous courses introduce and explain the principles of GD&T; this course brings together the information and demonstrates a method for analyzing and interpreting GD&T drawings. Objectives: Understand the general procedures to read a GD&T drawing; identify datums, features to be controlled, and their relationship to one another; and use paper gaging techniques to check parts for acceptance.
