cember 10. Senior Tim Valicenti
took home a first place medal,
while freshman Tyler Tuttle earned
a medal for his third place finish in
the grade level competitions.

Andrew Grose, a percussionist
and junior at Kohler High School,
recently performed with the Wis-
consin School Music Association
High School State Honors Band at
the Overture Center in Madison.
The October concert was the cul-
mination of an intense audition,
summer camp and rehearsal
process, which began last Febru-
ary. Over 1400 musicians audi-
tioned for spots in the state band,
orchestra and choirs. The WSMA
State Honors Project provides op-
portunities for Wisconsins top
young musicians to work together
with nationally known conductors
in a highly disciplined, profes-
sional setting. The state concerts
will be broadcast on Wisconsin
Public Radio stations on Sunday,
December 30 at 12:00 noon-2:00
p.m. and will be shown on Wiscon-
sin Public Television on a date yet
to be announced.
Andrew is a member of the KHS
Symphony Band, Jazz Ensemble,
Drum Line, Pep Band and The
Kohler Jazz Trio (Shattered Glass).
He has also performed with the
Sheboygan Symphony, Sheboygan
Youth Symphony and the Youth
Theatre Company of Plymouth.

HCE Holiday candy
demonstration
A candy-making demonstration
and a chocolate fix for HCE mem-
bers concluded the program year
for the Sheboygan County Associ-
ation for Home and Community
Education. Sandy Konitzer ex-
plained techniques, showed meth-
ods, and shared recipes for making
holiday candies. Sharon Zimmer-
man, Program Co-Chairperson,
made the arrangements, introduced
the speaker, and helped to coordi-
nate the workshop portion of the
program, so that everyone in atten-
dance was able to share in the re-
sults. The meeting was held at the
UW Extension Sheboygan County
meeting rooms on Monday, No-
vember 12, 2012.
Jane Jensen, Family Living Ed-
ucator and HCE Liaison for UW-
Extension Sheboygan County
conducted a survey and presented
information regarding the impor-
tance of health literacy and its re-
lationship to health outcomes.
Alice Walter, President, sug-
gested that everyone invite a friend
to future meetings. Wallet
brochures are available to help ex-
plain HCE. She reminded mem-
bers that it is important to submit
all names for membership in time
for the publication of the annual
program booklet next month.
Joyce Kuhlow, President elect,
gave a preview of the HCE pro-
gram year for 2013. A newsletter
will be sent to all members in Jan-
uary with registration information
for the February Cultural Aware-
ness program arranged by Marie
Schwinn, and the March Interna-
tional Food demonstration by
Myra Eischen.

Ribbon Schools Program award
On the heals of producing the
highest composite score in the
state for the ACT college entrance
exam, and scoring the highest
among the states public high
schools in Wisconsinss new ac-
countability system, Kohler High
School is one of only five schools
in the state to be nominated by
State Superintendent Tony Evers
for the National Blue Ribbon
Schools Program, which recog-
nizes overall academic excellence
or progress in improving student
achievement.
Kohler is the only high school to
receive the nomination, as the
other four contenders are elemen-
tary schools, including Country
Meadows Elementary School in
the Muskego-Norway School Dis-
trict; Grafton Elementary School
in the Grafton School District;
Ridgeway Elementary School in
the Dodgeville School District;
and Suamico Elementary School
in the Howard-Suamico
School District.

teachers, school lead-
ers, and staff members as
well as the school community
come together to support high lev-
els of learning for all students.
According to a Wisconsin De-
partment of Instruction press re-
lease, the Blue Ribbon Schools
Program began in 1982 and has
recognized nearly 7,000 of Amer-
icas schools over 30 years. Selec-
tion criteria require that schools
have at least 100 students and be
open for at least five years.
Schools must have met adequate
yearly progress targets in 2010-11
and annual measurable objectives
for the 2011-12 and 2012-
13 school years.
Awards will be given
to schools in two cat-
egories. Exemplary
High Performing
Schools are those
that are in the top 15
percent for performance
levels on the states reading
and mathematics assessments and
disaggregated results for student
groups show similar academic
achievement. Exemplary Improv-
ing Schools have at least 40 per-
cent of students from
disadvantaged backgrounds and
have made the most progress in
improving student achievement on
state assessments. Schools receiv-
ing this award are among the top
10 percent for both reading and
mathematics gains in proficiency
levels for all students. Addition-
ally, disaggregated results for stu-
dent subgroups, including students
from disadvantaged backgrounds,
show improvement similar to that
of all students.
According to the U.S. Depart-
ment of Education website,
schools benfit by being recognized
as National Blue Ribbon School
because it allows them shine under
a national spotlight for all the right
reasons, and acknowledges and
validates the hard work of stu-
dents, educators, families, and
communities in striving forand
attainingexemplary achieve-
ment. For many, attaining the Na-
tional Blue Ribbon School award
is the realization of a long-held
dream.
National Blue Ribbon Schools
serve as models for other schools
throughout the nation, and school
personnel are often sought out as
mentors. Their applications are
posted on the U.S. Department of
Education's website, and media ea-
gerly profile recognized schools,
helping the school, its district, and
community gain additional expo-
sure. Representatives from schools
are honored at an annual awards
ceremony held in Washington, DC.
Each school receives an engraved
plaque and program flag with the
official seal which signifies its sta-
tus and the year of its award.
This wont be the first time for
Kohler, however. The school won
the award in 1988-89.
Best wishes to these schools as
they complete the Blue Ribbon
Schools application and undergo
the national review process,
Evers said. Awards are typically
announced in early September.

Two Kohler Village residents play for
the 2012 U.S. Development Academy
Soccer Showcase in Sarasota, Florida
Kohler students Billy ONeill
and Aidan Hogan played in the
2012 U.S. Development Academy
Soccer Showcase in Sarasota,
Florida On December 1. This past
summer, Aidan and Billy were se-
lected to play on the U-16 Acad-
emy Team which is the only
academy program in the state of
Wisconsin. The Academy is based
at the FC Milwaukee soccer club
in Milwaukee. For the past six
months, the boys have been train-
ing a minimum of 3 times per
week, excluding game time, and
they have played academy soccer
games in Milwaukee, Chicago,
Ann Arbor, St. Louis, Dallas and
Minneapolis.
In 2012, the United States Soc-
cer Federation decided to mandate
that the Development Academy
teams play from September to July,
forcing players who wanted to
continue with the Academy to
choose for the first time between
playing for the Academy or for
their high school. While this was a
difficult choice for the boys given
the strong tradition of soccer at
Kohler, both players are proud to
represent their Village, their
County and their State everyday as
they prepare to face the best soccer
this country has to offer.
The FC Milwaukee soccer club
academy team is coached by Uni-
versity of Wisconsin assistant
coach Phil Presser. In 2012-2013
the FC Milwaukee Academy Team
will compete in the Academys
Mid-America Division of the Cen-
tral Conference. The boys team is
ranked sixth out of 13 teams that
make up the central conference.
The teams will play about 30
matches plus two tournaments this
season.
The upcoming Winter Showcase
is an integral part of the U.S. Soc-
cers national team training pro-
gram and its goal is to facilitate the
development and identification of
prospective Olympic and Youth
National Team players for the
United States. Aidan Hogan is
sophomore at Kohler High School
and is a goal keeper for the team.
Billy ONeill is a junior at Kohler
High School is a defender for the
team.

For the fifth year in a row, the
Kohler High School boys soccer
team was awarded the Team Aca-
demic Award from the National
Soccer Coaches Association of
America (NSCAA). To qualify for
the award, the high school team
must have a minimum grade point
average of 3.25 for the entire aca-
demic year. The team GPA is de-
termined by adding every players
GPA, then dividing by the number
of players. Only 140 boys teams in
the United States, and six teams in
Wisconsin qualified for this award.

at UW-Green Bay Phoenix womens
basketball game
On Friday, November 30, the
Kohler sixth grade girls basketball
team experienced the special
honor of playing against each
other at half-time of the UW-
Green Bay Phoenix womens
game versus the University of In-
dianapolis. The girls recognized
the privilege of getting to play on
the Kress Center court and gave it
their all for six minutes in front of
a crowd of 1,900 spectators.

experts at the 2013 Interactive Demonstration Kitchen
Series at The American Club Resort
Saturday sessions offer opportunity to learn tips from expert Chefs while
indulging in food and beverage tastings
For the culinary enthusiast or the begin-
ner cook, The Demonstration Kitchen Series
at The American Club Resort in Kohler, Wis-
consin provides a delicious and educational
experience, filled with expert tips for how to
create a mouth-watering dining experience
at home. The Demonstration Kitchen Series
runs each Saturday, Jan. 5-April 27 with
two sessions at 11am and 2pm.
The culinary classroom boasts a func-
tional kitchen and seating for up to 40, of-
fering guests an interactive experience to
not only taste dishes being cooked during
the demonstration, but also the opportunity
to ask questions throughout the demo,
learning tricks of the trade from seasoned
Chefs. The hour long presentation includes
food and beverage tastings and is offered
for $35 per person.
Overseen by Executive Chef of The
American Club Resort, Rick Boyer, weekly
Demonstration Kitchen Sessions have been
planned thoughtfully to showcase a variety
of topics including Healthy Cooking, creat-
ing Hearty Winters Soups, Cooking with
Beer, celebrating Asian dishes, a tour of Ire-
land Cuisine and many more. Each session
is hosted by one of the several talented
Chefs from the Kitchens of Kohler and
geared toward giving the guest insight into
how to recreate the dish at home.
New to the lineup, and much anticipated,
is the April 13 Field to Table session, hosted
by Chef Alexander Glass of The Wisconsin
Room. Earlier this year, The Wisconsin
Room underwent a shift to a farm to table
focused menu, featuring the best product
from local purveyors and farms in the area.
Chef Glasss demonstration will highlight
some of the fresh spring dishes likely to be
seen on the Wisconsin Room menu.

Kitchen Sessions, noted Chef Boyer. Its
an opportunity for us to share our passion
and knowledge about food in an intimate
setting. We enjoy the opportunity to show
our guests how they can create a culinary
experience at home, and recreate dishes
theyve enjoyed while visiting the resort.
Located in the Shops at Woodlake Mar-
ket, the Shops are also home to Yoga on
the Lake, Cucina, Craverie Chocolatier Caf
where KOHLER Original Recipe Choco-
lates are handmade daily and several
boutique stores such as Wisconsin Trader,
Movers & Shakers Kids Toys, Scentualities
and Kohler Gardner.

for Outdoor Grilling

grilled and roasted meats are prepared in a
Cuban roasting box. Chef Smitala will intro-
duce you to the history of this equipment
and show different types of brines, mari-
nades and techniques that create rich fla-

Building on Scandinavian traditions, Chef
Palm will show you how to create a memo-
rable coffee and pastry gathering. Hell
begin with a sand kaka, which is like a
pound cake, and a glad kaka, a gooey
chocolate tart. Then hell demonstrate three
traditional Scandinavian cookies: ribbon
jam, chocolate ginger snap and cardamom
tea cookies.
