BatBaby Hat Instructions:

Note: This pattern is meant to fit a 6 month to 18 month old baby. You could enlarge the pattern to fit an older child, though.
1. Wash your cashmere sweaters in cold water (normal cycle) and dry on high heatdo this twice. (washing increases the loft and density of the cashmeremaking it softer and stronger) 2. Cut your cashmere sweaters apart into large piecesI usually cut mine so I end up with 4 pieces: the front, the back, and two arms (I cut the arms apart down the seam). Cut away the ribbing at the bottom of the sweater, as well as at the cuffs and collar so they do not get in the way. 3. Print the BatBaby Hat pattern on page 5 of these instructions and cut out. Pin the pattern to one of the cashmere pieces (making a double layer so you end up with two pieces) you have chosen for your hat and cut out. Repeat with the second color of cashmere you have chosen to form the reverse/inside of the hat. 4. Pin your pieces together, rights sides facing in. Sew around the sides and top edges of the hat, making about a inch inseam (the inream may be lerr on she bas earrof she has.

The hat color that will form the outside of the hat should be left facing inside out, while the one that will form the inside of the hat should be turned right side out. Place the inside hat piece inside the outside hat piece, ensuring the little bat ears are pushed up inside one another, and the seams on both hats are aligned down the sides. Pin together along the bottom edge.

Beddy-Bye Beast Instructions:

Note: I made my beasts with a little sewn packet of some mild-smelling herbs that are known to have calming properties. It consists of equal parts dried chamomile, lavender, hops and rose buds. To do this, fold the 2x4inch piece of fabric in half and sew along two sides. Fill with the herb mixture, then sew the final edge closed. If you did not want to do the herb packet, you could also put a rattle or small bell inside the body of the beastor nothing, if you prefer.
1. Print out the Beddy-Bye Beast pattern on pages 6-7 of these instructions. Determine which Beddy-Bye Beast you want to make (chicken, kitty, bunny, panda or monkey) and cut out the necessary pattern pieces. Taking your pieces of cashmere, determine which colors you want to be the body, the face and any other features like ears or mouth. Pin the body pattern piece to a folded piece of cashmere, so you will have two identical pieces when complete. Pin the ear pattern piece to cashmere color you selected for this, again ensuring the fabric is doubledand repeat so you end up with 4 ear pieces. Pin the face pattern piece to cashmere you selected for this, and cut out (only 1 piece for this one). Cut out any remaining pieces you may need for your specific animal (for reference, see animal faces on page 8). Pin the face piece to the right side of one body cashmere piece, as indicated on the pattern. Sew around the edge of the face, about 1/4-1/8 inch from the edge of the face piece. If you are making the panda or the monkey, sew the eyes or the mouth pieces on now, just as you did with the face piece.

4.

Pin your ear (or beak and comb) pieces together, right sides facing in and sew around the edges, leaving one edge open, as indicated on the pattern. Your inseam will only be about of an inch or less on these. Turn right side out.

5.

Pin the ears in place on the head of the animal bodynoting they are intentionally placed in a wonky way. Your ears should be pinned in the location indicated on the pattern, but rhotld be pinned ro she earr/cockr comb face downward, onso she face. Sew over she bossom edge of she earr/cockr comb, ro shey will rsay in place when yot rew she body layers togethershir alro rerver so reinforce she earr/cockr comb ro they stay securely attached once complete.
Sew the ears facing in toward the face as shown

6.

Pin the tow body pieces together, right sides facing in, wrong sides facing out. Sew along the edge of the body, leaving a - inch inseam. Leave an opening at the bottom of the body, as indicated on the pattern. Turn the body right side out. Stuff the body with fiberfill, inserting the optional herb packet at this time so it will be tucked between layers of fiberfill within the body. Using an invisible ladder stitch, close the opening at the body bottom.

8.

Draw the facial feature onto the cashmere with disappearing ink. Embroider the face with 4 strands of black embroidery floss, using a split stitch. (If you are making the chicken, whipstitch the beak to the face, tucking the raw edges under as you sew.)
