Holiday Season.
Picture Books: Bear Has a Story to Tell by Philip C. Stead, illustrated by Erin E. Stead. Bear, with the help of his animal friends, remembers the story he had hoped to tell before the onset of winter. Charleys First Night by Amy Hest, illustrated by Helen Oxenbury. On Charley's first night, when it was snowing, Henry tells his new puppy, "This is home". The Family Book by Todd Parr. Represents a variety of families, some big and some small, some with only one parent and some with two moms or dads, some quiet and some noisy, but all alike in some ways and special no matter what. A Hat for Minerva Louise by Janet Morgan Stoeke. Minerva Louise wanders out into the snow, looking for a hat. Houndsley and Catina and the quiet time by James Howe ; illustrated by Marie-Louise Gay. Houndsley loves snowy days. Catina is worried about getting snowed in. No Two Alike by Keith Baker. Follows a pair of birds on a snowflake-filled journey through a winter landscape, where everything everywhere, from branches and leaves to forests full of trees, is unique. Poppleton in Winter by Cynthia Rylant. Poppleton the pig makes a new friend after an icicle accident, creates a bust of Cherry Sue, and gets a wintry birthday surprise from his pals. Snowmen at Work by Caralyn Buehner When winter sidewalks seem to have been mysteriously shoveled, a child wonders if snowmen are magic and have nighttime jobs while the people sleep. Includes hidden pictures. A Starlit Snowfall by Nancy Willard. Having made a plan to spend the winter with Bear napping in a cozy cave, Rabbit finds himself too energetic to sleep and decides to join the world outside. Toot & Puddle : Let It Snow by Holly Hobbie. Toot and Puddle celebrate Christmas and learn that the best kind of present for the best kind of friend is one that shows just how much you care. Winter is the Warmest Season by Lauren Stringer. A child describes pleasant ways to stay warm during the winter, from sipping hot chocolate and eating grilled cheese sandwiches to wearing wooly sweaters and sitting near a glowing fireplace. Chapter Books to Share: The Cricket in Times Square by George Selden. Chester the Cricket finds himself in Times Square and makes friends with a mouse and a cat. His music brings customers to a family newsstand. The Tough Winter by Robert Lawson. The animals from Rabbit Hill survive a cold snowy winter. Classic Series for Snowy Day:s: A Bear Called Paddington by Michael Bond. Paddington is found by the Brown family in Paddington Station and is adopted. This book and others in the series are perfect for reading out loud to younger children. The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis. Lewis wonderful fantasy about Narnia and the lion, Aslan, was introduced with this book. The series is fun to listen to, read and discuss. The Little House on the Prairie by Laura Ingalls Wilder. Follow the Wilder girls as they and their parents travel through the great Midwest. The Saturdays by Elizabeth Enright.
