Executive Summary
organizations, corporations and health systems on the adoption of mobile and mHealth devices. The Roadmap team, organized by mHIMSS, includes a variety of industry wide subject matter experts who volunteered time over the past year to develop the document. We the mHealth community recognize the rapid change related to the use of mobile and mHealth devices and the need to empower the use of these devices in healthcare. Increasingly, patients and providers are leveraging mobile devices to seek care, participate in, and deliver care. Mobile devices represent the opportunity to interact and provide this care beyond the office walls. The mHIMSS Roadmap combines up to date knowledge on how to implement mobile and mHealth best practices across a number of topics. The Roadmap is a living document and the mHIMSS team of volunteers will regularly post updates to reflect new industry developments. Each section of the Roadmap provides a brief background of the topic, the current state of adoption, and potential future improvements. In addition, the document discusses the interrelationship between many sections. For example, there is a need to leverage and create standards which enable the development of new models of care. We thank all the mHIMSS volunteers and HIMSS staff who have worked to complete this Roadmap and invite you to share how you are using the Roadmap by including #mHIMSSROADMAP in Tweets. The site will showcase many of the key takeaways from users. In addition, joining the mHIMSS LinkedIn group is an opportunity to directly interact with many of the experts associated with the Roadmap.

New Care Models focuses on Hospitals and Health systems in the United States. The focus is on todays bottom line pain points and the opportunity to overcome mHealth challenges. The authors have addressed what use cases tie to these pain points. What are key questions to ask? How should organizations encourage health system ownership in new model and creative ways to engage, disruptive change? As Dr. Topol from Scripts Health says, The creative destruction of medicine is a force to be unleashed on healthcare. The Care Model sub sections provide a path for navigating Consumer Usage, Provider Usage, Chronic Disease Management, and Global Health.

The policy section addresses current regulations and includes discussions on Meaningful Use, the use of MBAN devices and the challenges of big data and cloud computing.
5
Interoperability standards provide the cornerstone for building usable interfaces between disparate systems. Mobile systems and devices are becoming more prevalent in Healthcare. Nevertheless they are just starting to be recognized by traditional standards committees (e.g., HL7) and agencies (e.g., FDA, FCC, FTC).
6
Privacy and security are the backbone of trust in healthcare. The mHIMSS Roadmap goal is to provide resources to help healthcare organizations and vendors protect patients privacy and enable a secure environment.
