Dr Raphael Zarum Dean

R. Elazar said it was our glad voice at the Red Sea when God had saved us R. Akiva said it was our voice at Mt. Sinai when we unreservedly accepted the Torah R. Yossi said it refers to our voice in the kind of Torah study that leads to good deeds R. Meir said it refers to our voice of joy at the dedication of the Mishkan in the wilderness R. Avin said it refers to the melodious voice of the Levites in the Temple, and R. Eliyahu said it is our voice when we sing Hallel. All these voices are sweet because they express our deep reliance, commitment and love of our relationship with God. May all our learning at LSJS this term be sweet in our mouths.

Please, Lord our God, make the words of Your Torah sweet in our mouths... We say these words every morning as part of the blessings over the study of Torah, at the beginning of Shacharit. But how do words become arev, sweet? Let Me hear your voice, for your voice is sweet (arev) (Song of Songs 2:14). The Sages understood this phrase to be God reminiscing with us, recalling seven moments when our voices called to Him sweetly (Shir HaShirim Rabbah 2:35-40): R. Yehudah said it was our pained voice when we cried out to God in Egypt

Parallel Thinking:
Scientific Discovery & Torah Tradition exacTly how did God make The heavens and The earTh and us?
The apparent conflict between scientific thinking and Jewish wisdom has fascinated and frustrated generations of Jewish thinkers. Both help us to understand the world, but often they collide and challenge us. The disparity can be so stark that it vexes the greatest minds, compelling us to reassess the fundamentals of faith and question our convictions. Nevertheless, an inability to explain differences does not always imply failure; it can spur us on to a deeper exploration of the truth. Surely it is better to remain in a state of wonder rather than pressure ourselves into accepting half-baked answers. Delivered by a teacher with a foot in both camps, this series will give you an appreciation of the study of both science and Torah, as vital but inherently different expressions of reality. Six topics will be studied: Age of the Universe, the Big Bang and Creation Evolution and Design Chaos Theory and Divine Providence Neuroscience and Free Will Information theory and the transmission of Torah Archaeology and the Bible

Rav Soloveitchik on Abraham, Joseph and Moses

a Three week course expoundinG Truly oriGinal
readinGs of Three key biblical heroes
Through the eyes of one of the 20th centurys most important Jewish thinkers we will journey through the lives of three fascinating characters in the Bible to reveal their relevance to us today. We will study both classical Jewish sources as well as all other texts used by Rav Soloveitchik.

Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik (1903-1993) was a great Talmudist and philosopher. In a posthumously-published collection of his writings he describes his method of Torah study:

Barry Kleinberg
Barry is an osteopath in private practice. He also lectures at the British College of Osteopathic Medicine, where he is Deputy Head of Osteopathy. He is currently undertaking a PhD. Barry has been involved in Jewish education for more than twenty years and has a keen interest in modern Jewish history and Jewish philosophy.

Besides our understanding of the semantics of the words, their style, and the historical background, there is a great spiritual message... The Torah is not concerned exclusively with past events; it is also concerned with our thoughts, our feelings, and our commitments.... Human destiny is reflected in Genesis human triumph and defeat, human greatness and smallness.

Shabbat, Prayer and the Soul

deepen your feelinG for key shabbaT TefilloT and Transform The way you pray
How do we talk to the God of Creation on the Day of Rest? This course looks at seven sections of the siddur that we encounter every Shabbat: Who wrote them? Why were they included in the siddur? Do we appreciate and embrace the ideas they contain? Have their meanings changed over time? Are they still relevant? The seven prayers you study will unpack the meaning of Shabbat from beginning to end: aushe Kiddush, a prayer to sanctify Shabbat ohskh ,frc Birkat Yeladim, blessing children iust ke El Adon, praising God vshng ,ca Shabbat Amidah and Kedushah ;xun Musaf, the additional prayer ubheuke iht Ein Keloheinu, your relationship with God vkscv Havdalah, the end of Shabbat

The Shabbat is given unto you, not you unto the Shabbat
(Midrash - Mechilta 31:13). This course will enable you to get more out of your siddur prayer and develop your appreciation of Gods great gift to us, the Shabbat.

Lost in Translations?
explore how TexTs have been TranslaTed and TransmiTTed in Tanach
Reading the Bible in translation is like kissing your mother through a veil.
Hayim Nahman Bialik (1873-1934). Most of us use translations of the Tanach in synagogue and for study purposes but do we ever stop to think about what kind of translation we are using, or what relationship it bears to the original Hebrew text? On this course you will examine how Jews have translated and transmitted the Bible through the ages, starting with the Dead Sea Scrolls and the 2000-year-old Septuagint, the translation made by Greek-speaking Jews in Egypt. We will end up looking at the bewildering array of English translations of the Bible available today. You will investigate how translators work, the strategies they use, and the problems they seek to overcome, as well as learning to evaluate modern translations and decide which one - or ones - suit our needs best. What the Dead Sea Scrolls reveal about Tanakh Is the Septuagint a divinely aided translation or a national curse? Targum: when is a translation not a translation? Meet the unsung heroes who preserved Tanach Should everyone be allowed to read the Bible? Choosing a translation: find out whats on offer in English, why it matters and how to choose the translation thats right for you

how have Jewish aTTiTudes To violence chanGed from The bible To Today?
Recent years have seen upheavals around the world and rioting on our own streets. Over six weeks we will look at Jewish attitudes to violence in all its guises in the biblical, rabbinic, medieval and modern periods. Is violence ever appropriate? 1. How violent is the Bible? Is Tanach warmongering or peace-loving? When can violence be sanctioned? 2. Rabbis vs. Empires Views of the talmudic sages on violence in light of their historical context. 3. Metaphysics and the Masses The treatment of violence in Jewish philosophy and mysticism, and the Jewish masses in the medieval period. 4. Revolution, Anarchy and Statehood Violence, the French Revolution, and the early Zionists: How nationalist is Judaism? And a look at Jewish anarchism in both thought and history. 5.Violence in National Context Israel and the use of force: by what principles does a nation decide to go to war or put down violent rebellion? 6. The Judges Agenda

ohypua rpx
The power and poliTics of Jewish leadership before The Time of The kinGs
Starting with the transition from the leadership of Yehoshua and Moshe to that of the Judges, we will deal with the first judges Othniel, Ehud and Shamgar and discuss the job description of this new institution. How is it that by the time we reach Devora, being a shofet seems to include being a prophetess and singer as well as general and spiritual guru? We will compare the glories of the successful judges with the less effective achievements of Gideon, Avimelech, Yiftach and Shimshon. We will also consider the powerful temptation of idolatry and the influence of women over Yiftach and Shimshon. Finally, we will deal with civil war, gang rape and mass kidnapping, whilst discovering the political agenda at the heart of this book.

From Turbans to Tichels

how has reliGious cloThinG chanGed ThrouGh The aGes?
Halacha is the architecture of Jewish life. It guides our daily routine from what we eat and how we dress to what we say and how we treat others. Yet surely the greatest modern challenge of Halacha has been its response to the dramatic and irreversible changes in society while staying true to our tradition. This course will chart the history of Orthodox outfits and match them against the fashions of the time. We will investigate the changing concept of tsniut (modesty), including topics such as men and women covering heads, Jewish dresses, hasidic garb and Sephardi costume. Are we what we wear?

Jewish Faith in a Changing World

a special book launch & lecTure
Ever since the first encounter between Judaism and the western world in the 2nd century BCE, Jewish thinkers such as Maimonides, R. Moshe Luzzatto and Rav Kook have grappled with issues of Jewish faith and modernity. Their works of classical Jewish philosophy were of the highest intellectual calibre, and no question of faith, no matter how embarrassing or heretical, was overlooked. R. Shuchats new book presents the reader with the key issues of Jewish philosophy and relates them to 21st-century thinking. The book offers a fresh outlook on the Jewish faith and contains a timely message for thinking religious people today. Following the lecture there will be an opportunity for questions, chaired by Maureen Kendler.

Rabbi Dr Raphael Shuchat

is a lecturer in Jewish philosophy at Bar Ilan University and at the Rothberg International School at Hebrew University. He has written extensively on the Vilna Gaon. The book will be available to buy at the launch for 15, which is 20% off the RRP. 8pm to 9:30pm, Thursday 14 February 2013 There is no fee for this event. www.lsjs.ac.uk 020 8203 6427 In partnership with Hampstead Garden Suburb Synagogue

Whether they attend a Jewish or mainstream school, we all want our children to develop a passion for Jewish learning. The approach of Lishma is to teach traditional Jewish texts in a relevant, age-appropriate and enriching way, to deepen knowledge and develop skills.. As part of the Lishma ethos, children are encouraged to share what they have learnt and bring it into their home life.To support this, parents are regularly updated on their childrens progress. The teaching and learning occurs in a variety of ways, using a blend of learning strategies including chavruta, chabura, shiurim and other group discussions. Lishma is co-ordinated by Jo Bruce and supported by Jason Marantz (LSJS Chief Executive), a former head teacher.
