Last spring, Board members of the Pleasant Valley High School Foundation (PVHSF),Ave decided to raise money by selling Nelson engraved bricks. After speaking with John Shepherd, principal at PV, it was decided the bricks Grand Ave pave a needed walkway at the would N entrance to the school. Where people once trod across a lawn to get to the office would become a beautiful addition to the front of the school. The question then was how to get a walkway? Board members approached a private foundation and were awarded funds to begin building the walkway. The walkway became a collaborative effort involving several community members. Dan Beadle, retired PV teacher drew the plans. Austin Bossetti, a PV student, with the aid of his father Patrick, who works in Information Technology at PV, did the cement work as part of his Eagle Scout project. Jerry Joiner, also a retired PV teacher provided the tractor work digging out the old soil. Dan and his wife Linda then did the brickwork. Funded in part by Sutherland Landscaping, owner Bruce Whitegiver donated a third of the rock wall along the walkway. PVHSF, PVHS, the Bossetti family, and the Beadle Family also contributed funds toward the project. PVHSF expects to raise over $60,000 through the Buy A Legacy Brick campaign

A.G. Hayes Whos Killing All the Lawyers? Lawyers are being murdered by LASERdriven arrows. The FBI believes that someone is training a Native American militia to take over the economic system in the U.S. Joe Falk and Susan Koski are assigned to find the hired killer and The Fox, the real force behind the killings. A. G. Hayes studied writing at UCLA and has authored numerous short fiction works for magazines including Cover up, Not a Penny Pincher, Home, Payment in Full, and Small Wonder, as well as Guided Through a Mine Field and other scripts to CBS and other television production companies. This is his first novel. Hayes lives in Northern California, and spends his time traveling to nearly every part of the world. He uses personal experiences gained during travel and prior service with British intelligence in Eastern Europe and the Middle East to enliven his plots and enrich the characters of his protagonist team, Falk and Koski.
I wrote this work to be a high octane story with a serious message, says Hayes. From its superb beginning (The man in the tuxedo had an arrow buried almost to the fledge jutting from the left front of his white starched shirt. His right fist, crusted with dried blood, was grasped around the arrow below the flight, indicating he never knew what hit him.) to its explosive, finale, I did my best to make certain the adrenaline never let up. Whos Killing All the Lawyers? by A. G. Hayes - 276 pages - Re-Released by Savant Books and Publications as an eBook in July 2012 This book is now available in softcover book and eBook Kindle, Tablet, iPad, Nook, Sony, Smartphone and Adobe.pdf formats at www.savantbooksandpublications.com from Amazon Kindle and Google Play. (StatePoint) Give guests a leg up on their New Years resolutions with these tasty, healthful tweaks to your favorite holiday dishes. Simple substitutions will jazz up appetizers, main dishes and desserts with both flavor and nutrition. Here are some crowd-pleasing ideas that draw on seasonal ingredients and are easy to prepare: Appetizers Holiday appetizers dont need to be deep-fried, fatty or breaded. Finger foods should whet a healthy appetite without raising the cholesterol count. Keep guests happy and well nourished by pairing sparkling white wine with nuts rather than simple carbs and empty calories. Nuts are a good source of protein, fiber and healthy, monounsaturated fats. Plus, many studies have shown that nuts have powerful cholesterol-lowering effects. A cheese ball made with goat cheese is a great choice for a party tray. Its lower in fat and contains fewer calories than cream cheese, while having more calcium, protein and vitamins A and B-6. For a fun, sophisticated finish, roll the cheese in a nut coating thats free of artificial preservatives and flavoring, such as Sahale Crunchers Cranberries, Sesame Seeds + Honey. Serve with apple or pear slices instead of crackers. Main Course Butter-basted turkey sounds good, but turkey is naturally tasty and doesnt need the added fat or sodium. Oven roast your turkey with spices and fresh herbs. Try using cayenne pepper, cardamom and cinnamon, and herbs like sage, thyme and dill, rather than extra fats, to flavor meats and vegetables.
For stuffing, use whole grain breads instead of white bread to add fiber, vitamins B6 and E, magnesium, zinc, folic acid and chromium. For green bean casseroles, skip the French-fried onion rings and add a sprinkle of almonds for crunch. Instead of adding brown sugar or marshmallows to yams, add a blend of nuts and dried cranberries for extra flavor and texture. Salad Serving a tossed salad is one of the easiest ways to bring fresh greens to the table. Leave off the croutons and extra cheese and give your salad some unique flair that guests will find irresistible. Heres a salad recipe worthy of any holiday spread: Green Salad with Apples, Almonds and Walnut Oil Vinaigrette 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar 2 Tbs walnut oil 2 Tbs honey 2 Tbs minced shallots 1/8 tsp salt 1/8 tsp freshly ground black pepper 6 cups mixed greens 1 cup thinly sliced apples 4oz package Sahale Crunchers Almonds with Parmesan Cheese + Herbs. (Look for these and other healthy ingredients in the produce section at Walmart) In a small bowl, whisk together apple cider vinegar, walnut oil and honey. Whisk in shallots, salt and pepper. Toss sliced apples with 1Tbs vinegar to prevent browning. Place the greens, apples and Crunchers in a large bowl. Drizzle with vinaigrette and toss gently to coat. This recipe yields 4-6 servings. Dessert Fresh, seasonal fruit is always a great choice for dessert. Simple baked fruit crisps and crumbles topped with nuts are also festive and satisfying. More great entertaining ideas and holiday recipes can be found at www.SahaleSnacks.com. Make this years holiday season the happiest, healthiest yet.

Great Ideas for Holiday Sweets and Treats
...and
(StatePoint) Everything tastes better when its fresh and made with love -- and the holidays are the perfect time to try your hand at making homemade candy. Creating your own candy treats is easier than most people realize. Indeed, many experienced bakers dont know that making homemade candy can be a cakewalk. Folks have lost touch with their inner Willy Wonkas, says Liz Gutman, co-author of the new cookbook, The Liddabit Sweets Candy Cookbook. She and coauthor Jen King are debunking the myth that creating homemade candy is an insurmountable task. For the health-conscious, homemade candy is also a safer bet than the storebought variety, which often contains endless artificial ingredients, says King. To get started, try out this recipe for Buckeyes from Gutman and Kings new book: Makes about fifty 1 1/2-inch buckeyes Ingredients: For centers 1/4 cup room temperature cream cheese 1 1/2 cups creamy commercial peanut butter 1 1/4 sticks unsalted butter, at room temperature 2 teaspoons fine sea salt 1 cup almond or peanut flour 3 cups confectioners sugar, sifted For dipping and garnish About 4 cups chopped dark chocolate Coarse sea salt (optional) Combine all centers ingredients in mixer bowl and beat on medium-high until
completely incorporated. Cover and refrigerate the peanut butter mixture until firmed a little (about 30 minutes). Roll mixture into balls of 1 tablespoon each and place on prepared baking sheet. Refrigerate for about 30 minutes. Prepare 4 cups dipping chocolate: Fill a large saucepan with water to a depth of about 1 inch. Bring to a boil, uncovered, over high heat. Turn off heat and set a bowl on top. Add about two-thirds of the chopped chocolate and allow it to sit for 5 to 10 minutes, stirring only occasionally with a heatproof spatula. Once chocolate melts and reaches desired temperature (it should feel warm) lift the bowl, and place it on a folded dish towel. Wipe moisture off the bottom and side of the bowl. Add reserved chocolate, about 1/4 cup at a time, stirring vigorously and constantly until lump-free and cool. This will take about 15 minutes. Allow to set. Place chocolate in a large bowl. Stick a toothpick into a peanut butter ball and dip in the chocolate, leaving the top quarter undipped. Transfer to second prepared baking sheet. Remove toothpick, and cover hole left behind with a few grains of coarse sea salt. Repeat with remaining buckeyes. Allow buckeyes to sit until chocolate is firm, about 15 to 20 minutes. Store layered with wax paper in a refrigerated airtight container for up to 4 weeks. A variety of great recipes can be found in the The Liddabit Sweets Candy Cookbook. For more information, visit www. LiddabitSweets.com. This holiday season; dont be intimidated by the prospect of candy making. Once you know some basic tricks and techniques, the possibilities are endless!

1. Fireplaces. Always use a fireplace screen and do not burn paper or any other material that may float out and onto furnishingsincluding evergreens, which, when dry, can flare out of control and send sparks flying into a room. Make sure Christmas trees are at least three feet away from fireplaces and heat sources. 2. Smoke detectors. Make sure all smoke detectors in your home are in working order. You should have at least one on each floor, including the basement. 3. Overloaded outlets. Decorations, increased cooking and houseguests all contribute to an increased reliance on extension cords and outlet adapters. Dont string extension cords across doorways, stairs, walkways or other areas where they will pose a tripping hazard. Plug your tree and any electrical toysinto outlets protected by a ground fault circuit interrupter. 4. Overnight guests. Do not allow children to open or to play on sofa sleepers or trundle beds. Always keep hands and feet clear of mechanisms when opening or storing the mattress in a sofa sleeper. Be wary of using antique or hand-me-down beds for overnight guests. The construction may be unstable and antique hardware may be dangerous in the hands of small children. Always review safety rules with children spending the night in your home, particularly if they will be sleeping on bunk beds (not recommended for children under 6). Make sure bunk beds have been constructed to comply with the Standard Con-
sumer Safety Specifications for bunk beds. 5. Holiday clutter. Plan ahead to handle holiday clutter. Have garbage bags ready for package wrappings so excess paper is not cluttered around fireplaces or candles in use. A storage ottoman will keep pillows and linens from overnight guests out from underfoot and away from fireplaces and candles. Bookshelves with storage baskets make for fast and easy cleanup of new toys and all their pieces. However, dont overload shelves, and consider anchoring taller units to the wall to prevent possible tipping over. 6. Safe home entertainment. One size does not fit all when it comes to todays varied-format televisions. If a new TV is on your holiday list, make sure you have the appropriate furniture to accommodate the new size and
7. Candles. Never use lighted candles on a tree or near any evergreens. Place candles where they cannot be knocked down or blown over. Make sure lit candles, as well as the matches or lighters used to light them, are well out of the reach of children. 8. Furniture. Upholstery that carries the gold Upholstered Furniture Action Council hangtag was manufactured using construction criteria designed to reduce the likelihood of fire caused by cigarettes, report the experts at the American Home Furnishings Alliance. Upholstery exposed to an open flame from a candle, lighter or match, however, can still ignite and may burn rapidly with thick smoke, they warn. Keep these tips in mind to help keep your house accidentand hazard-free this holiday season. For more information, please visit www.findyourfurniture.com.

Side by Side, Then & Now: Leslie & Jean Brown, Part 2
provided thousands of nursery starts and landscaping services to the residents of Butte County for over 30 years. In fact, the nursery became known as THE place in northern California to purchase azaleas. At one time, in addition to an astonishing variety of azaleas, the nursery sold 52 different varieties of camellias. Nearly all of the azaleas growing in Oroville, as well as Chico, Paradise, Gridley and even Sacramento came from Kampong Garden Center, thanks to their efforts at propagation. In springtime, the area around their house on the old nursery grounds is vibrant with those azaleas, as well as camellias and exotic palms. During the years it was open to the public, it was such a lovely place to be that 100s of people have taken their lunches to eat at the picnic tables around the small lake at the nursery. It was like a public park. It has also served as the site for countless weddings and other special events. Although many of the potted plants azaleas, camellias, palms, roses, hanging baskets with cascades of brilliant flowers were available for rent for weddings, Les says that during the time the nursery was open, many folks were having a hard time financially, so he would loan the plants, even hauling them to the event location

ed from his generosity and civic spirit. Kampong Garden Center was always more than just a place to purchase plants to take home. As a way of supporting the community, Les would haul huge potted plants from the garden stock to many area events. Events hosted by the Chamber of Commerce, like the Business Expos at the Municipal Auditorium were made so much more beautiful and inviting by the loan of those plants. At Senior Faires in the mid 90s, Les brought in orange trees in blossom that filled the auditorium with a sweet fragrance and thousands of tiny white petals. For many years, potted palms from the nursery provided an authentic Middle-eastern atmosphere for the annual Live Nativity at the Seventh Day Adventist Church. Although the potted palms are gone now, some folks from the church still come every year to collect palm fronds from the nursery property to decorate the traditional event. In conjunction with his work at the nursery, Les spent some years as the President of the Northstate Chapter of the California Nurserymans Association, and he and Jean were both members of the Bonsai Society and the Palm Society. Their membership in these organizations provided them with opportunities to travel all over the state and tour both public nurseries and private gardens that were rarely, if ever, open to the public. One such memorable southern California tour was of the private garden of an opera singer who appeared to the tour group in an appropriately theatrical garment with a parrot perched on her shoulder. Needless to say her presence and commentary added flair to that tour!
In addition to his elementary school teaching in Thermalito, Les also taught in the small community of Las Plumas where his classroom consisted of a small one-
another was in the processing of closing down. But that didnt deter them. Les named the nursery Kampong Garden Center and the old sign for the nursery can still be seen as you drive along Olive Highway, between Foothill and Arbol. Les and Jean have always been avid readers, and in a 1929 issue of
room schoolhouse and his students were the children of those who worked at the Big Bend Power Plant, which was built in 1909 on the north fork of the Feather River. Both the powerhouse and the community of Las Plumas were demolished for the creation of Lake Oroville. It was to be the last of his regular teaching jobs. Things were changing at the hospital and in the world of medicine, and Jean realized that if she wanted to continue in her profession she would need additional education, so she enrolled in some advanced nursing classes at Chico State. At the same time, the college was introducing a new program in Horticulture. Jean was fascinated, and they were soon off on a new venture. In 1964, she and Les opened a nursery. It was quite a risky business, two similar nurseries in the area had closed and
National Geographic Les came across an article about Indonesia. One of the photos showed the crossed poles and A-frame construction of a kampong, the longhouse living quarters for bachelors. Les designed the nursery entrance to mimic that construction, and Kampong Garden Center

Festive Popcorn Trees (NAPSI) Tis the season of decking halls and trimming trees, and now theres a delicious way to do bothin the kitchen. Theres no chance of breaking heirloom ornaments when youre decorating miniature Festive Popcorn Trees made from The Popcorn Boards recipe. Roll up your sleeves, gather the kids and pull out your prettiest decorating sugars and sprinkles. Then turn marshmallows and popcorn into a scenic winter wonderland to displayor eat. Long ago, Christmas trees were trimmed with treats such as apples, nuts or dates. With Festive Popcorn Trees, your entire tree is edible. Theres no right or wrong way to decorate a tree, but if youre not happy with the results, eat it and start again. Its the ultimate eco-friendly way to trim a tree. And if youre looking to trim fat and calories during this hectic season, pop up a bowl of plain popcorn to nibble on when hunger strikes. At 30 calories a cup, wholesome, whole grain popcorn is naturally low in fat and calories and the fiber can help fill you between meals. Leave the padding to jolly old St. Nick.

Silver Bells, Silver Bells ... Its Christmas Time, in the city? No! No! No! Its Christmas Time, all over the world. Please, whatever you do, Remember The Reason For The Season. And respect those who do, and those who dont celebrate the season, too. In other words, enjoy and appreciate. Not so much with material gifts, as with gifts of kindness and love just being with friends and family. Having spent Christmas in a few other countries: I am in awe of, Not the differences, but the similarities. It truly is a wonderful world we live in, and I am so grateful for having been blessed with the opportunity to live in this community and write this column. Its been fun! Now down to serious business: Whats going on in Oroville before & after Christmas? I want to encourage each and every one of you to shop locally. Thats right! Support your friends, neighbors and families who own, operate, and/or manage one of our local businesses. Life is not the same as it was 10, 20, 30 years ago. Sure there are umpteen more chain stores and businesses to choose from. But if I know what I want, asking in the smaller, locally-owned stores has proven to be a positive method in getting what I want. Take Betty Jeans or Better Deal Exchange, (Ace Hardware)it never fails, If they dont have it, miraculously they get it! And it is so much easier for me. Plus, I dearly love the personal face-to-face, old-fashioned service, always with a smile. I mention Better Deal Exchange on Mitchell, across from the local Library, because that was the first business I interviewed for my first Newcomer column in this paper. (That was five years ago, 2007. A great year to get out and explore my new-to-me town.) Ive met wonderful people, made fantastic friends, and wrote a column for The Digger. Ive felt I was a part of this community for the past five+ years. You can not imagine how wonderful it feels to go Downtown or on the outskirts of Oroville and feel welcome. How could so many doors open for a Newcomer? It has been overwhelming. Thank You. Thank You. Thank You, The Digger, Oroville Chamber of Commerce, Downtown Business Association, Feather River Senior Citizens Association and so many more. Now, I recently read that many of the businesses, including The Digger, in this country were closing shop because merchandising, or marketing on the Internet, was becoming so popular that many of the retail stores could no longer compete. That is so sad, but thats life, and the younger
generation. I tried a couple of times to place an order over the Internet. Both were bad experiences. Returning, refunding, and/or correcting an order seemed to be an impossible task. I want to touch, feel, and see what I am buying. And, I found it threatening to have to give out credit information. All I can say is, Hey, I know times are tough. But please, hang in there, if you can! This world is always evolving. There are good times in our future ... I like television, just as much as the other guy? Not really. When my children were young and the neighbors children watched cartoons on Saturday morning, we played the piano and did sing-a-longs. I did not want my children to get get addicted to television. It was a good life. That is only one reason why you will find me enjoying the State Theatre, Birdcage Theatre, entertainment at The Monday Club, and socializing with locals, at local events. Watching your children grow and mature, as they develop their talents, (dance, sing, perform on stage) is one of the most precious things I can do with my time. What do you do with your time? Are you retired? Will you retire soon? Have you thought about volunteering? It can be a wonderful opportunity to not only serve your community, but it can open doors for anyone, especially those who like people. I have had fun attending Chamber of Commerce events. And visiting the historical museums and the docents, who volunteer, is always educational. (You did know the docents are volunteers, didnt you?) I love the pride this town has and demonstrates for the history and historical places here. Bolts Museum has something new all the time. Tools? You bet! But a lot more ... go see for yourself. Well, this is my last column for Orovilles Digger. It wouldnt have been possible, except for the kindness shown to me by the local stores, owners, and clerks. And I love eating out and enjoying the local food, chefs, waitresses and bounty. Thank You! Just remember, supporting our local economy by shopping here and enjoying whats available helps all of us. Hope to see you downtown and around in the future. I still carry a large gold purse with a clock and wear gold hats and shoes. I am The Newcomer. (AKA...The Candid Lady from Manteca and a BAT (a Bay Area Transplant). I sincerely wish you a very Merry Christmas and a wonderful New Year. Hope to see you soon in downtown Oroville. I will continue to shop local. Will you?
