PO Box 155, Queanbeyan NSW 2620 District 9710 Charter Date March 1952 qbnrotary@gmail.com http://www.facebook.com/QueanbeyanRotary Meetings held on Wednesday, 6.15pm for a 6.30pm start at Hotel Queanbeyan (The Top Pub), 59 Crawford St, Queanbeyan

19 December 2012 2012 Edition

Presidents Report from Natalie Jupe Hi everyone, My apologies for not sending a Keyway last week or making it the meeting unfortunately work commitments held me up on Wednesday night, plus I had a rather stressful week with Andrew going to Afghanistan for a work trip (he had a ball and was probably safer there than here LOL). Thank you for your understanding (after all it is a busy time of year). The big thing to come out of this week is that our club is now involved in the Letter of Love project, which involves Australian school students writing letters to the survivors of the Sandy Hook School tragedy. These letters will communicate compassion and also solidarity with them. Queanbeyan High School have already written 14 letters and given them to me to pass along. For more information visit http://www.facebook.com/shslettersoflove I encourage everyone to attend an NYSF dinner in January, or at the very least offer to Home Host a student for the day. Details can be found in this edition. Please note that our AGM will now be held in February. I hope everyone who came to our Christmas party had a nice time and enjoyed good food and good company. Photos from the day are on our facebook page. This will be the last edition of the Keyway for 2012 so I would like to wish everyone a safe and happy Christmas and New Year I look forward to working with you all in 2013. I also want to thank each and everyone of you for the assistance you have given me over my first 6 months as President. Kind regards, Natalie

Hi everyone, this is just a global email to advise that my daughter Lauren ; Kerri and I will be volunteering on Christmas day at St John's Baptist Church to assist with the christmas day community lunch. If anyone is interested in donating some time between 10am and 3pm on christmas day....then give Sue ( co-ordinator ) a call on 62487771...any offer of help is grategfully accepted. Check out the link below
http://www.stjohnscanberra.org/care-need-help/

Last year St John's was able to provide christmas lunch to over 400 people ( families and individuals ) and to be in a position to help those most in need in our community was for me (personally ) a very worthwhile experience. It was my first time last year and it was great to be able to give some time and help out...I still managed to celerbrate christmas with my family later that day....and it will be the same again this year :) For those of you that register your interest and you intend to help out on the day...give us call ( if you know us ) or email and let us know and we'll keep an eye out for you and link up with you on the day. It will be busy but also a lot of fun too ...see you there :) Maybe we can all get together for an afternoon xmas drink together before heading off to our respective xmas commitments... cheers Peter Carew

Joke of the week A nose and a spark plug walked into a bar and the bartender told them to leave. When the nose asked why, he said "Well, you're off your face and he looks like he's going to start something"

Rotary District 9710 Scholarship for 2013-14

Rotary has introduced two new types of scholarship that are available for the 2013-14 and subsequent years. Rotary District 9710 which covers the Act and parts of southern NSW is seeking applications for the global grant scholarship where the studies will commence in 2013/14. The district grant scholarship will only be offered if no suitable applicant for the global grant scholarship is identified. Full details of the both scholarships are set out in the document Rotary Foundation Scholarships for Future Vision Pilot Clubs and Districts. There are terms and conditions associated with all global grants provided by Rotary and potential applicants should consider whether these are acceptable to them, paying particular attention to those that apply to scholarships before lodging an application. District 9710 will offer US$15-20,000 which must be matched by the Rotary Foundation if the scholarship is to proceed. Assuming that the Rotary Foundation agrees to match the scholarship, the successful applicant could expect a scholarship totalling US$30-40,000. The amount of the scholarship will be finalised after discussions with the preferred applicant and an examination of their budget. Applicants will only be considered if they have the full support of a Rotary club within the District 9710. Applicants are encouraged to use the Global Grants Scholar Application - Future Vision Plan which should be submitted electronically. As supporting documentation will need to be sent to the Rotary Foundation that is located in Evanston Illinois USA, where possible this documentation should be provided in an electronic format. The District 9710 closing date for all applications is 31 March 2013. In April of 2013, District 9710 will conduct a selection process which will include an interview. District 9710 will make its decision during April 2013. District 9710 will then work with the preferred applicant to assist them prepare their application for consideration by the Rotary Foundation. While District 9710 will actively assist and support the preferred applicant present their case to the Rotary Foundation, District 9710 cannot guarantee that the Rotary Foundation will approve the provision of a global grant scholarship. When submitting a global grant application for a scholarship, District 9710 must provide proof of university admission for the prospective scholar to the Foundation. The applicant must also provide the Foundation with acceptable results from a Foundation-approved language test, if scholars are assigned to an institution that teaches in an official language different from their native language. The proof of admission and language-test results are not required when submitting the initial application to District 9710 but the successful applicant will need to obtain the necessary evidence within what may be a short time period of being advised of their success at the District 9710 level. If District 9710 is not able to identify anyone that we consider suitable for the scholarship funded under the global grant or the Rotary Foundation did not consider the person that we had identified as fully meeting the requirements for the scholarship, District 9710 will then seek applications for the scholarship that is funded through the district grant. The district grant scholarship would be for US$15-20,000. Persons who had been unsuccessful in applying for a scholarship funded under the global grant would need to lodge a new application if they wanted to be considered for a scholarship funded under a district grant. Global grant scholarships key points It must in respect of graduate level study that relates to one or more of the six areas of focus being: o Peace and conflict prevention/resolution o Disease prevention and treatment o Water and sanitation o Maternal and child health o Basic education and literacy o Economic and community development Be for a study term of one to four academic years

The scholar must: o Leave District 9710 o Study outside of Australia o Live in another country where there is a Rotary District o Have sufficient language proficiency for their proposed study

When considering whether a scholarship applicant meets one or more of the six areas of focus, District 9710 will be guided by the expectations of the Rotary Foundation. 1. The Global Poverty Walk

As you may be aware, I rode from Perth to Canberra earlier this year to raise awareness of global poverty in partnership with MAKE POVERTY HISTORY. Due to the success of that journey we are now planning another journey but this time I will walk 4,400km from Perth to Sydney bouncing an AFL footy! We will be joined along the way at various locations by other people also committed to seeing an end to poverty and wanting to encourage the Government to increase our commitment to foreign aid. More details about the walk and why we are doing it can be found on our website at www.theglobalpovertywalk.com.au. The total cost of this event will be about $15,000, excluding items being donated by our sponsors. We funded the whole cost of our previous event ourselves, approx $12,000, and will be able to contribute around $5,000 towards the upcoming walk in addition to buying a car and caravan for the journey. To complete our mission we need help to fund the remaining amount so we have just launched our crowd funding campaign on Pozible.com in order to raise a few thousand dollars by asking others to donate $5 $20 towards the journey. The philosophy behind this campaign is similar to the philosophy behind the walk itself: People say that walking from Perth to Sydney is a long way and it is, but if everyone in Australia took one step on that route it would be pretty easy. Its the same to end world poverty one person or country cant do it on their own but if we all do our little bit we can create history and be a part of the generation that ends world poverty once and for all. Like the solution to poverty itself, if everyone puts in just a little bit each, we can achieve our goal very quickly. If you would like to support our journey please go to www.pozible.com/theglobalpovertywalk and click the SUPPORT PROJECT button. Other ways you can be involved in this campaign are: *Like The Global Poverty Walk on facebook at facebook.com/TheGlobalPovertyWalk Regards Matt & Wendy Napier For more information or to discuss alternate options for contributing to our campaign, please email us at theglobalpovertywalk@gmail.com.

Rotary Dinners and Home Hosting Session A: Dinner Thursday 10 January 2013 6.20pm with Home Hosting Sunday 13 Jan Session C: Dinner Thursday 24 January 2013 6.20pm with Home Hosting - Sunday 27 Jan Dinner venue: Ainslie Football Club Cost: $35
NYSF Rotary Dinners

The Dinners will be at the Ainslie Football Club in Wakefield Street, Ainslie. Rotarians will meet the students attending the NYSF - from all parts of Australia - and hear a prominent scientist who is invited to address the students. In past years speakers have included Australians of the Year. Arrive early to chat with the students, including those from District 9710. Then well sit down with the students to eat. Clubs are asked to substitute one of their regular weekly meetings in January 2013 and to encourage as many members as possible to attend. Please advise me, as soon as possible, if your Club members are supporting one of the NYSF Rotary Dinners and approximately how many may attend. A list of names of those attending will be required by 14 December and any cancellations or additions no later than one week before each Dinner (ie 3 January and 17 January respectively).
Please note that the number of Rotarians / partners will be limited to 110 at each Dinner, to avoid overcrowding. Any Rotarians who are listed at the RSVP cut-off dates will be required to pay. Please reply by email or phone - details below with names of attendees as early as possible. Payment is required on the night and all Clubs will be provided a make-up list of attendees. NYSF Home Hosting

A key function of each NYSF Rotary Dinner is to organise Rotarians to host two or more students at their home during the Sunday following the reception between 9:00 am and 8:00 pm. This provides students with a relaxing day in a local home and enables them to unwind, and catch up on some sleep and some washing. (Students do not need tours of the area, as this is done elsewhere in the NYSF program). Home hosting has provided many happy experiences for students and Rotarians alike. Members who come to a Dinner do not have to host but all are invited to do so. It would be a big help if Rotarians who wish to home host could indicate this (together with preferred numbers) when registering for the Receptions. Hosts will receive stickers for their badge at registration and students will approach those with stickers to arrange Home Hosting during the reception. Even if you cant come to a Dinner, offer to home host - the students will benefit.
RSVPs Please email your members intended attendance and home hosting plans to me at adamdetotth@netspeed.com.au. For phone enquiries please call on 6288 1441 or 0402 464 327.
