The Front Panel controls consist of a digital temperature controller and three switches which control the mains Power, Power to the stirrer and the back light for monitoring the level in the receiving flasks. Switching OFF the Mains power switch disconnects the power to the complete viscometer circuitry. The Stirrer switch switches the Stirrer ON or Off as required by the user. The stirrers function is to keep the temperature of the water bath gradient free. There is a lighted cabinet which provide illumination to the receiving flasks for ease of monitoring. The light switch allows the user to switch the illumination ON or OFF as required by the user. The temperature controller is connected to the heating system for maintaining the temperature of the water bath in which the flurol and universal cups are placed.

Switch ON the Mains Power Switch. The Digital temperature indicating display will show the current temperature of the water bath, in which the Universal and Furol cups are fitted. While pressing the set temperature button, rotate the temperature setting knob, until the desired temperature is displayed on the digital display. Now, the controller is set for the new temperature set point. Please note, this is a single set point controller only. Further the rate of heating is not user definable. DESCRIPTION

The equipment is illustrated in the General Assembly Drawing attached. The numbers given against the components of the equipment in the description below pertain to this General Assembly Drawing. It consists of a cylindrical oil cup the base of which is prolonged as a tube in which a jet is screwed with its bore at the axis of the cup. The bottom of the cup is concave internally, to allow complete drainage of the liquid with which it is to be filled. The upper end of the cup is larger in diameter and has a circular mark. The oil cup is silver plated and is screwed to the bottom of the heating bath which is held securely in position. An immersion heater is fitted to the side of the bath and is connected to the mains through a Dimmerstat auto-transformer (7) for temperature control. The bath is mounted on a stand (1) with leveling screw (2). A spirit level is provided for leveling the stand. Stirring of the bath is effected by means of a cylinder surrounding the oil cup which is provided with vanes. A flat shield is fixed to the upper edge of the cylinder. This provides a means of attachment for an insulated handle (4) for rotating the stirrer and a support (5) for the bath thermometer. A thermometer support (13) is provided to support the oil cup thermometer. Two jets one universal tip (9) and another Furol tip (8) are provided. A small box spanner (11) is provided for screwing the jet in the cup.

SETTING UP AND TEST PROCEDURE

Use a universal orifice for lubricants and distillates with efllux times greater than 32 s to give the desired accuracy. Liquids with efflux times over 1000 s are not conveniently tested with this orifice. Use a Furol orifice for residual materials with efllux times greater than 25 s.

The Furol efllux time is approximately one tenth the universal efllux time. The universal orifice is used at 70, 100, 130 and 210F. The Furol orifice is used at 77, 100, 122 and 210F. Set up the viscometer and bath where they will be free from drafts and rapid changes in air temperature. Locate them so that the sample will not be contaminated by dust or vapours during the test. Clean the oil cup with a suitable solvent and then dry it. Mount the spirit level on top of the cup and level the instrument. Fill the bath with water for determinations at 180F (82.2C) and below. F or determination at higher temperatures, fill it with oil having a viscosity 330 to 370 second (37. 8C). Fill the bath to a level at least 6.5 mm above the overflow rim of the viscometer. Clean the collecting flask with a suitable solvent. Connect up the input of the dimmerstat to the mains through an isolating switch and the output to the heater plug. Adjust dimmerstat setting for attaining and maintaining the required bath temperature. If the test temperature is above room temperature, preheat the sample not more than 3F (1. 7C) above the test temperature. Never pre-heat any sample within 50F (28C) of its flash point. Insert a cork stopper, having a cord attached for its easy removal into the air chamber at the bottom of the oil cup. The cork shall fit tightly enough to prevent the escape of air, as evidenced by the absence of oil on the cork when it is withdrawn. Fit filter funnel provided with the apparatus directly in the viscometer until the level is above the overflow rim. Stir the sample until its temperature becomes constant. Use a circular motion at 30 to 50 rpm in a horizontal plane. Remove the thermometer from the sample. Quickly remove the oil from the gallery until its level is below the overflow rim. This is done by placing the tip of the withdrawal tube at one point in the gallery and applying suction. Do not touch the overflow rim with the withdrawl tube, or the effective head of the sample will be reduced. Place the receiving flask where the stream of oil from the bottom ofthe viscometer will just strike the neck of the flask. The graduation mark on the flask shall be between 100 and 130mm from the bottom of the viscometer tube. Snap the cork from the viscometer using the attached cord. At the same instant start the timer. Stop the timer the instant the bottom of the meniscus reaches the graduation mark. Record the efllux time in seconds.

Special Procedure for Waxy or Resinous Materials In case of steam refined cylinder oils, black lubricating oils, residual fuel oils, and other materials which may possibly contain waxes or resins, heat the homogenous representative sample in a loosely stoppered container for an hour in an oven maintained at 212F to 215F (100C to 101. 7C). Immediately filter the pre-heated sample through filter funnel directly into the viscometer. Place a thermometer with support into the sample. Do not disturb the sample until it is 1F (0.55C) above the test temperature. When the sample reaches this temperature, stir it with the thermometer using a circular motion at 30 to 50 rpm until the temperature of the sample remains constant within. 05F of the test temperature during 1 minute of continuous stirring. Rest of the procedure is same as described above. CALCULATIONS AND REPORT 1. 2. 3. Multiply the efflux time by calibration factor for the Viscometer used. Report the corrected time in seconds as the Saybolt Universal Viscosity or Saybolt Furol Viscosity of the oil at the temperature at which the test was made. Report the value below 200 s to the neares O. 1 s. Report all value of 200 s or higher to the nearest whole second.
