GET THE NUTRITION YOU NEED

Have you met Stephanie Happe? Learn how to have a great relationship with food by feeding your body correctly in Stephanies monthly nutrition seminars or with one-on-one counseling. Stephanie recently moved to the Bay Area from Georgia, where she received a bachelors degree in dietetics. She is also a nationally certified personal trainer. If you want to jump-start your weight loss program, improve your nutrition or get more details, email Stephanie at shappe@ymcasv.org or stop by our front desk. Were here to support you every step of the way, so that you get the results you want. Stephanies tip of the month: Did you know that glucose is the only fuel used by brain cells? The brain relies on glucose, which we get from carbohydrates, to produce energy to motivate you and get you moving. So, no more carb-free dieting. Balance healthy carbs with proteins and fresh vegetables and fruits.

Thank you for the gift of Living Strong Living Well, or LSLW. I learned about it through a friend, and being selected was a true blessing. While the name LSLW conveys the image of an exercise program for cancer patients at the Y, the program offers far more. When I was diagnosed with cancer, my wife and I had to make decisions on the type of treatment and the appropriate oncologist. After that, my role was to show up for the treatments, as directed. I was totally dependent on the doctor, nurse, technicians and medicines. They were dedicated to killing cancer or slowing it down while managing the side effects. Through this process I was a passive victim responding to the treatments. At the end of the processes, their mission had been carried out. My only remaining assignments were follow-up visits to see if their work was successful or if the cancer had returned. After the last visit, I was very lonely. The professionals had moved on to other patients, and I had to deal with lingering side effects and a beat up body. And just at this time, LSLW invited me to attend their program. LSLW filled the vacuum and transition from treatment to a wellness program. LSLW enables our bodies to heal and is a very logical progression. Now I am no longer a victim but an active participant, who can do something to feel better. In the midst of this coaching and training, I learned not to be competitive with others at the Y. That is not the definition of success for LSLW. The objective is to restore our bodies to health through moderate exercise, stretching and balance. We do this in the fellowship with others who are dealing with their own cancer. As a result, there is a bonding and support. Lastly, we learn to program in our health as a first priority to our other activities. All of this is carried out by a compassionate staff. This program should be a part of every person going through cancer treatments. It is a saving grace. - John Barnet
