Dynamically Sharing Tape Drives / osn

Most tape SAN backup application partners already support dynamic (tape) drive sharing
NetApp Storage Media Server NetApp Storage

one of mutiple tape Drives

Since 2011 the TapeSAN (osn) certification got simple: the tape library must be supported by the DMA, the tape drives & Switches & FC-cables by NetApp & the DMA in general. See: http://www.netapp.com/osn/info/config.html NetApp Confidential - Limited Use

SMTape (SM2T), why is it so important?

ONTAP 7.x/8.0/8.1 use-cases Backup-Speed: Every PTapeDrive gets streaming for any kind of data (no problem with million-of-files-volumes). Is even some faster for ONTAP-deduped & compressed volumes (while all other tape backups get slower). With ONTAP 8.1.1 Block-Level-Incremental/Differential (instead of LUN/VMDK/DB-File-Level Incremental/Differential with NDMP Dump) Tape Media Efficiency & effective Disaster-Restore: keeps the storage block reductions from Snapshots, Cloning and Deduplication to tape. Snapshots, Clones, Compression & Deduplication come back very fast without performance overhead at DR.
