Network Design Case Study 2

Problem Statement: You are a Network Engineer, and have been tasked with designing a data network for Read Leaf Hospital with the following requirements:

Red Leaf Hospital is a medium-sized local hospital located in Dunn County, Menomonie, WI, with approximately 300 staff members supporting up to 900 patients. The hospital is expanding and doing very well financially, the management level has decided to invest for network improvements and wants to deploy cutting-edge technology for better patient care and high productivity.

The doctors and nurses would like to have the ability to access patient medical records and information from floor 3 through 7 with wireless access. 100 laptops were purchased and with approximately 50 more will be arrive in next three months. The hospital building is 350 feet long and 150 feet wide. There is one wiring closet per floor. A wireless site survey needs to be conducted to check if a single access point in wiring closet can reach all of the rooms of each floor.

The servers are put in the first floor. Because the doctors in Radiology and Oncology need to do medical imaging, they require large amounts of bandwidth. Some users have complained of slow access to the current servers, especially at peak hours. The current network use low-end inexpensive switches from different vendors. There is a main switch connecting to the switch in

each floor. The other switches connect through a daisy chain of switches. The design should improve the switching speed between floors. The servers need to be consolidated and expended to accommodate for the growth. The current network comprises of 10 network segment with single connection to the ISP. The protocol they currently use is OSPF, but they want to move to a routing protocol that is easier to manage. The current IP addressing scheme is presented in the following table.

Mr. Smith, the IT director at Red Leaf Hospital, would like a proposal to upgrade the network

with updated switches that support 1 Gigabit Ethernet copper, 10 Gigabit Ethernet fiber, and power over Ethernet (PoE) and to provide 1 Gigabit Ethernet access to the servers. The proposal should cover secure WLAN access from floor 3 through 7, a new IP addressing scheme to reduce

the number of networks leased from the Internet service provider, and a plan to consolidate and update the current switched network and data center to improve the speed, bandwidth, availability, security and easy management to accommodate for the hospitals growth. The hospital must apply with the U.S. Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).

The final report should address the requirements imposed by the client with an estimate of all costs in budget format.
