DECEMBER 2012 VOL. 13, NO. 3

The Best (and Only) Show For the Hearth, Barbecue and Outdoor Living Industries
There is no other show like the Hearth, Patio & Barbecue Expo thousands of square feet indoors and outdoors showcasing the latest industry innovations and the best (and coolest) new products for the marketplace. And, all the experts are there too. Plan to attend the next show four information-packed days that you cant find anywhere else on March 13 16, 2013 at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando. There are many industry professionals that never miss an HPBExpo in fact 45 percent of last years attendees have attended the Expo every year for the last five years, and almost 30 percent of those attendees have attended every year for the last 10 years! They are the best in the industries, and they dont miss a show. Over the last three years, over 80 percent of the attendees felt the cost of attending the show was a good business investment for their companies. Change is in the Air The building industry is beginning to improve, housing starts are finally on the rise again, the remodeling industry is showing increases and, most importantly, consumers are starting to invest in their homes again. In light of the new environment, and learn what homeowners are looking to buy and stock your showroom with these new products. Youll find them in the New Product Pavilions indoors and outdoors, the Attendees Choice Pavilion, the First-time Exhibitors Pavilion and, new for 2013, the Tailgate Pavilion, sponsored by Tailgater Monthly magazine, outside in the Outdoor Burn Area. Youll also find new products all over the show floors. Manufacturers come to the Expo to get feedback on new technology and new design features. They want to know what your customers are looking for and buying. This is also an opportunity for you to tell your suppliers whats not working for you. Strike the Old Way of Thinking About Business Yellow page advertising is out and social media promotion is in, and your company better get on the bandwagon or youll be left in the phone book recycle bin. HPBExpo Education, generously supported by ICC-RSF, has over forty education sessions to keep your business practices current and on the cutting edge. Back by popular demand is Bob Negen from Whiz Bang! Training who will teach his new Retail Boot Camp in an all-day session. Sign up early (preregistration is required) to learn how to get new customers, develop a loyalty program and, of course, how to use social media to increase sales and customer loyalty. Every retailer should take this course. Expo Education 2013 will also include a series of sessions for the industries rising stars, the Young Guns. continued on page 3

A Note from the desk of the MidStates HPBA President

The 2012 conference, although small by design, yielded great rewards. I would like to say a special thank you to those who made it a success. Extra thanks must go to Dale Remmelts for his role in planning and executing our party. It was a great compliment to our auction. As you already know, this product auction helped raise money for the Wounded Warrior Project, which provides programs and services to severely injured service members during the time between active duty and transition to civilian life. Looking forward to our 2013 conference, please plan on attending as we will be growing both the event and the auction. I am hopeful we will have a larger auction, full of bargains for our attendees and to raise a sizable donation for a worthy cause.

5 Things That Motivate Employees More Than Money

The ability to motivate employees is one of the greatest skills an entrepreneur can possess. The following are a few tips on how you can motivate your employees! 1. Be generous with praise. Everyone wants it and its one of the easiest things to give. Plus, praise from the CEO goes a lot farther than you may think. Praise every improvement that you see your team members make. Once youre comfortable delivering praise one-on-one, to an employee, try praising him/her in front of others. 2. Make your ideas theirs. People hate being told what to do. Instead of telling people what you want done; ask them in a way that will make them feel like they came up with the idea. Id like you to do it this way turns into Do you think its a good idea if we do it this way? 3. Never criticize or correct. No one, and I mean no one, wants to hear that they did something wrong. Try an indirect approach to get people to improve, learn from their mistakes, and fix them. Ask, Was that the best way to approach the problem? Why not? Have any ideas on what you could have done differently? Then, youre having a conversation and talking through solutions, not pointing a finger. 4. Make everyone a leader. Highlight your top performers strengths and let them know that because of their excellence, you want them to be an example for others. You will set the bar high and theyll be motivated to live up to their reputation as leaders. 5. Take an employee to lunch once a week. Surprise him. Dont make an announcement that youre establishing a new policy. Literally walk up to one of your employees, and invite that employee to lunch with you. Its an easy way to remind him that you notice and appreciate his work. HIRING! by Tom Bardeen
NONE of the above! Its HIRING! Tom Bardeen, a former International Banker and E-Myth Worldwide Consultant, now working independently, recently wrote a Business Development Program entitled 30 Simple Systems for Small Business Success. Tom maintains that of ALL business systems, HIRING is by far where the opportunity for real wealth lies. True Leaders do not do ANY of the Technical Work! Tom points out. They place very carefully worded ads in just the right places to attract hundreds of resumes, and from among the top applicants, they make a list of those who exceed their expectations. One is hired, and the other top applicants are kept on a list for the future, just like large corporations and football teams do it, says Tom.
