B.Reading Comprehension: Read the following passage carefully and choose the correct answer. Emperor Titus was in poor health and frequently suffering pain. He was forty when he became emperor, and only two years later he died. But in fact, Titus had felt the taste of Imperial power for much more than his two-year reign. He had helped his father, Vespasian, during his reign, so few men were better fitted to inherit a throne than was the handsome and talented Titus. Before his reign there were lots of rumours going around Rome about Titus. The gossip said that he took bribes, that he was trying to get rid of his father and that he was cruel and greedy. But when Vespassian died Titus quickly proved that the rumours were wrong. His charm and generosity completely won over the Romans. One important event in the reign of Titus was the completion of the great amphitheatre we call the Coliseum, whose ruins can still be seen in Rome today. Although the new emperor didnt care for gladiatorial combats, he furnished the amphitheatre and let the fights continue because this was the peoples wish. Titus was as forgiving as he was generous. After two men had tried to kill him he invited them to dinner. Titus showed the same great forgiveness to his brother Domitian as lie showed to his enemies. Ten years younger than Titus, Domitian was the complete opposite of his brother unhappy where Titus was happy, distrustful where Titus was open, ambitious where Titus was humble. Their father had been aware of the determination of his younger son to achieve power and had offered him many high offices, but never militarycommand for he was certain that with an army at his back Domitian would attempt to seize the throne. Titus died in the very same farmhouse in which his father had died. The Romans grieved as though a close relative had died. Certainly they had lost a clever leader. 1- Titus allowed fights between gladiators because a) Domitian loved them. b) Vespassian had loved them. c) He loved them. d) The people loved them. 2- Domitian was a) more trustful than Titus b) more humble than Titus c) more ambitious than Titus d) happier than Titus. 3- a) Domitian was killed by two men. b) Two men were killed by Domitian. c) Two men tried to kill Titus. d) Vespasian was killed by two men.
