2012 - 2013: The long distance revolution. Norwegian Air Shuttle combines the 787 Dreamliner with its highquality and low-price philosophy and changes long distance ying. Forever. Coming soon.
1984: Boeing introduces the 737-300, yielding signicant gains in fueleconomy and a reduction in noise. Today the Boeing 737 is the best-selling jet airliner in the history of aviation. 1783: Piltre De Rozier launches the rst hot air balloon. The passengers are a sheep, a duck and a rooster and the balloon stays in the air for a grand total of 15 minutes before crashing back to the ground.
1969: Concorde is invented as the rst supersonic airliner with speeds that reach double the speed of sound!
1949: The DH 106 Comet becomes the rst jet-powered airliner. In 1952 it becomes a regular passenger jet, providing a faster, quiet ight.
1919: John Alcock and Arthur Whitten Brown make the rst non-stop aerial crossing of the Atlantic in a modied Vimy IV. The ight takes 16 hours and 27 minutes.
1911: Calbraith Rodgers makes the rst ight across the United States. During the 84 days of ying, he crashes at least 70 times. Altogether this journey takes 3 days, 10 hours, and 24 minutes of time spent in the air.
1905: Two years after building the rst airplane in history, in 1903 the Wright brothers follow up with the rst practical airplane in the world. The 1905 Flyer lays the groundwork for three-axis control (in yaw, pitch and roll).

Thanks to such a high demand from you, our passengers, we are currently able to offer 300 routes to more than 114 destinations. And because a growing number of passengers choose to fly with our brand-new, WiFi-equipped aircraft, we can continue to offer more direct flights to new and exciting destinations.
Our ten-year journey may not have been easy, but its been worth it. Why? Because Norwegians entrance to the market has changed the way we travel. Before September 2002, Norway had some of the highest airfares in the world, but Norwegian has helped to cut the average ticket price by more than half. This is a trend that Norwegian has contributed towards not only in Norway, but also in the other Nordic countries and in Europe as we have continued to expand. Norwegians journey has only just begun, and we will continue to follow our strategy by offering people exactly what they want: competitive fares available to everyone and accessible, direct flights. A high level of service for a low fare is our key. We are

Norwegian anniversary
Cabin crew Ellen Sivertsen (from left), Andrea Taube Nismalm, Stina Kristoffersen and Unn Charlotte Frantzen say the working environment at Norwegian is excellent.
Bjrn Kjos always takes time to talk to colleagues when he is travelling - here with Andrea Taube Nismalm.
Kjos travels regularly to Kastrup to visit his colleagues in Denmark. The office here has grown from one to five employees since the start in 2009.
s he settles down in seat 1A on flight DY 932 to Copenhagen, Norwegians CEO Bjrn Kjos explains to us his vision: I have always worked to build a strong company with low costs, so that you can fly as inexpensively as possible. As is often the case when he speaks about the airline, he is keen to stress that it is Norwegians employees that drive the company forward and make it a success. It is certainly hard not to notice the general sense of enthusiasm amongst the cabin crew, the way Kjos greets his colleagues, and the fact that he remembers details such as who he has flown with previously, where they live, and where they go on holiday.

airline is down to her colleagues and the working environment. Even if you have to get up in the middle of the night for a flight, it is always fun going to work, she says.
Opportunities
Bjrn Kjos has given 32-year-old captain Jens Lyche opportunities he would be unlikely to get at his young age with other airlines.

A busy schedule requires efficiency. So todays meeting with Thomas Woldbye, CEO at Kastrup Airport, takes place as Bjrn Kjos walks from one meeting to another.
We followed Kjos over a working day and were able to meet a few of the employees that are the source of so much pride. My colleagues and the great working environment are very important to me, says flight attendant Andrea Taube Nismalm. Having such fantastic colleagues means that we have a great time at work, and Im sure that the passengers pick up on it too. She is quickly backed up by her colleague Ellen Sivertsen, who adds that 90 per cent of the enjoyment she has from working for the
Sivertsen and her colleagues are just a few of the employees who form the backbone of the work Norwegian has done to build itself into a successful company that is now celebrating its tenth anniversary. In turn, this massive growth has also given the employees opportunities they may not have had with other companies. Whilst maintaining a steady course towards Kastrup airport, pilot Jens Lyche (32) is glad to take the time to answer when questioned on what he appreciates most about his employer. Ive had the opportunity to be part of this incredible growth, and Ive had seven exciting years so far. Norwegian has given me opportunities I probably wouldnt have had anywhere else at the age of 27 I was upgraded to captain, explains Lyche, who has also worked as a training captain for two years. There are sure to be more opportunities in the years to come too in 2013 Norwegian will be embarking upon a new challenge with its first long-haul routes.

(The Wild Duck)
The Wild Duck by Henrik Ibsen will play throughout the autumn at the Nationaltheatret in Oslo. Written towards the end of the 19th century, the play shows us the Ekdal family, who make their living running a photography studio. Under the direction of Anders Paulin, audiences can expect to hear pop-cultural and philosophical references. The Wild Duck will premiere during the Ibsen Festival 2012, held in honour of Norways great dramatist. The festival opens the autumn season on alternate years at the Nationaltheatret, and this year will be featuring a number of exciting Ibsen performances between 23 August and 9 September.

Few other modern artists are better known than Norwegian painter, Edvard Munch, and until mid-October you can see a wonderful exhibition of his work at the famous Tate Modern in London. It examines the artists work from the 20th century, including sixty paintings, many from the Munch Museum in Oslo, with a rare showing of his work in film and photography. Munch is often seen as a 19th-century Symbolist painter but this exhibition reveals his interest in modernity and how he was inspired by everyday life outside of his studio, such as street scenes and incidents in the media. If you think you know Edvard Munch, this exhibition will make you think again.

hese certainly are very exciting times that we live in, when you can decide to leave work early on Friday, go to the airport and catch a plane to New York just for a long weekend, and get back for work on Monday. This is especially good for Norwegians, because, in my experience, most of them have left work by Friday lunchtime anyway! This new phenomenon has only been made possible to the masses because of the rise in low-cost budget air travel infiltrating the growing travel market. It has completely transformed the way people think about flying. The perfect example: on my birthday my wife suggested that we could either have a meal out, or, for just a few pounds more, we could nip over to Venice for the weekend ... Well, there was only one option really. So, hats off to low-cost air travel. And now you will soon be able to fly long-haul at a fraction of the price. Yippee! This is my routine when I am on a longhaul flight: I get onto the plane, sit down and then fall asleep straight away. What a result, you might be thinking, but within a few minutes of take-off I suddenly wake up and am completely wide awake. I stay in this state of total alertness for the rest of the flight until just before we land, and only then do I start to drop off to sleep. Then I wake up ten minutes after the plane has landed, feeling like a flesh-craving zombie ... Not a good look before filming a travel show.
I do actually enjoy long-haul flights, though. I love watching film after TV show after film its such a great way to catch up on everything Ive missed over the past three months. I even saw Troll Hunter on a flight to Thailand, which I still believe is a real documentary, so dont spoil it and tell me its not true. Next you will be telling me that Father Christmas doesnt live in Lapland. Dont go there! Foolishly, I sometimes think to myself that a long flight would be a great opportunity to do some reading, and even a bit of research, but I soon slip into a vegetable-like state and staring at a screen is all I can manage. So the in-flight movie it is. What was the point of Concorde when flying to New York? You could only squeeze in one film if you were lucky ... But joking aside, its amazing that such fantastic destinations are so accessible these days. New York, the Big Apple, one of the most iconic cities on the planet, is a mere seven hours away. Thats not even a long-haul flight. New York is just one of those places that you have to visit before you die. The first time you walk around Manhattan, just look in any direction and wherever you are it starts to feels like one massive film set, as it all looks so familiar. You might need to take a plastic neck brace, because staring up at the awe-inspiring, towering skyscrapers all day can take its toll. This unique city has got it all.
If you fly in the opposite direction you will get a completely opposite experience. You can never go wrong with the lure of South-East Asia; there is no escaping the travelling hours and air miles, but the rewards are well worth it. Cities like Bangkok in Thailand or Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia are the perfect exotic destinations to explore, and also serve as superb springboards to the whole of the rest of the region, with amazing countries like Cambodia, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Vietnam and Laos all less than two hours flight away. At this moment in time I have just drooled all over my keyboard reminiscing about all those wonderfully delicious delicacies served in every restaurant all over Asia ... Mmm ... And thats just the tip of the iceberg of the incredible, mind-blowing experiences to be had out there. But finally, just a few tips to remember while on a long-haul flight: 1. Never go to the toilet in bare feet. 2. A blow-up pillow and heavy eye patches are a must. 3. Red wine is your friend. 4. The salt and pepper are there for a reason. 5. Get a pocket-size electric cattle-prod to discourage the snorers.

e meet Sondre at a local bakery, just around the corner from his home. He often sits here when he is on a break from touring. He orders his favourite from the menu, a large avocado sandwich, and makes himself comfortable at our table outside in the sun. Right now, were in the heart of Williamsburg on a street called Wythe. Two streets down, youll find the East River, where you can view the famous New York skyline, he tells us. Sondre has lived in the Big Apple for over seven years now. He moved here at 22 with his girlfriend Mona whos now his wife. They chose to settle in Williamsburg, an area popular with artists, who give the place a buzzing vibe. At first, we lived in an old apartment building where the stairway felt like it led you to a dodgy brothel. We didnt know how long wed be staying so we didnt buy much for the apartment. that we found on the street. We had a great dining table, for example, that used to be a door! But it was really exciting to live in a place that had its own unique energy and culture. Do you reckon youd have dared to move if youd been on your own? Probably not. It somehow seems less daunting when youre with someone.
From star to stranger
it turned out that he Was seeing a psyChoLogist in the West viLLage BLoCk i Was Living in and that he Was the WorLds Biggest sondre LerChe Fan.
Coming to New York was a very different experience from what Sondre was used to in his hometown of Bergen in Norway. There, he was well established and had a nice apartment. He was the critics favourite, hailed as a prodigy, received the Spellemannspris (the Norwegian Grammy) at his first attempt and travelled the world playing one concert after another. The simple, safe option would have been to stay. But I wanted a change from being a local celebrity, and New York is so big that its easy to disappear. It was both liberating and scary at the same time a definite dent to the ego, but thats what I needed. After a stint in Williamsburg, the couple moved to Manhattan West Village to be more precise, and the address was 10 Downing Street. Its fun to be able to say youve lived there, he chuckles. After two years, though, it got claustrophobic with all the tourists. There was a lack of space and the pace of life was too fast for me. I work from home and I needed a door that I could shut behind me, somewhere I could play loud music. So we ended up back here in Williamsburg.
2011 and 2012 have been very busy for Sondre. Last summer he released his latest album, and this spring he joined the panel of mentors on Norways version of the successful TV show The Voice. I had seen The Voice in the US and had to admit I quite liked it. That fact swayed my decision. Had I not seen it, Id probably have brushed the idea aside without really understanding what it was all about. This spring, he also released his first song in Norwegian in collaboration with his cousin, Lars Vaular, who is a famous rapper in Norway. From the autumn onwards, his schedule is packed. Hell be embarking on his longest Norwegian tour ever, hell be touring in the US and hell release his first live album. Four of his earlier albums will be released on vinyl together with lots of previously unreleased treats for the fans. On top of that, hes booked to open one of Norways biggest festivals in August, the ya Festival, and he will be publishing the sheet music to his songs.

During his 11 years as an artist, Sondre has released seven albums. Among them is the film score to Dan in Real Life from 2007. The star-studded cast included Steve Carell and Juliette Binoche and the film was directed by Peter Hedges the man behind the book Whats Eating Gilbert Grape? It turned out that he was seeing a psychologist in the West Village block I was living in and that he was the worlds biggest Sondre Lerche fan. So that was lucky, he smiles. Sondres days were crammed full, yet he still found the time to promote his album Duper Sessions, fly to Los Angeles to record his follow-up album Phantom Punch and go on tour with that album from Indonesia to Germany. Ive no idea how I managed all that, but it came together somehow.

His tour will kick off on 5 September in New York. The day of his 30th birthday will mark the start of a tour whose schedule includes concerts in 19 American cities before heading over to Norway for shows in October and November. It will be great to play for so many fans this autumn. Im also proud of being able to release old records on vinyl, with loads of extra material, and publishing
Sondre grew up in Skjold in Bergen. He was the youngest in the family, with two sisters and one brother. Among his friends, he was neither super-cool nor the outsider; he was somewhere in the middle, as he says. I definitely enjoyed being the class clown at times, but I also had a modest, quiet streak. Thats what I like to think, anyway, he says smiling.

Sondres been interested in music for as long as he can remember and in the early years he got into bands such as A-ha, the Pet Shop Boys, Wham! and the Eurythmics through his mother and his older siblings. At eight, playing the guitar caught his attention. I found out I enjoyed performing and felt I should do something about it. So I asked my mother if I could start taking lessons. Unfortunately, I had signed up for the classical guitar, so both my teacher and I were very frustrated for a while. But eventually I started learning music that belonged more to the pop genre everything from Brazilian music to Jan Eggums stuff.

was sent off round Europe to play to various record company bosses. It was by no means the typical adolescence that most youngsters experience, but Sondre was completely taken by it. This was what Id always wanted to do so there was little time for partying, drinking and taking part in what my friends were doing. But I made up for lost time when I moved here to the US. A delayed adolescence, he laughs.

At 13, he stopped taking guitar lessons. He no longer wanted to play other peoples songs; he wanted to write his own. At the time, his sister was working at various music venues across Bergen and suddenly, the young Sondre who was far from old enough to be allowed entry succeeded in getting gigs at those venues. It was really scary at first, but there is a punk inside me somewhere that comes out to play when I perform. Sondre put his head down, kept playing and was eventually discovered. He was allowed to work in the studio with one of his biggest heroes, producer HP Gundersen. It wasnt long before he was offered a recording contract and

His debut album Faces Down was released when he was 19. The magazine Rolling Stone listed his album as being one of the top 50 albums of the year. How did success affect you? I think you inevitably feel invincible in short periods and its easy to think that everything you touch will turn to gold. I can understand how it pushes some people over the edge, how you can take it all for granted. But thankfully, it didnt all go to my head, despite everything Id dreamt about actually happening. I got to tour Europe, Asia and even the US. Id never been to America before, but my first trip out here involved giving concerts for people who already had heard my music. It was amazing flying over New York for the first time and realising that the city I had seen on TV did in fact exist. Its strange that my head didnt explode around that time,
he says from behind his dark sunglasses. Hes now living the dream and there is nothing to suggest hell be returning to Norway anytime soon. Since the first time he picked up the guitar, hes known what he should do. And thanks to his enthusiasm and the good people around him, its been non-stop ever since. He doesnt like looking too far ahead and predicting what the future will bring. While we wander down towards the East River after finishing our lunch, he explains: If things dont work out and people dont want my music anymore, Id just have to find other work. You learn to adapt quickly when you work in the music business.
Our idea is pretty simple. We noticed that all the other airlines force customers to choose between quality on the one hand and low prices on the other. We aim to change these rules. We have changed the way people travel in Europe, and when we heard about an airliner that could y farther than any other while travelling faster and using 20% less fuel, we saw the possibilities. We are now ready to change the way people y long-haul. Enjoy high quality at our signature low prices. The long distance revolution is coming soon.

he air is drier and the atmosphere more tranquil. I find myself surrounded by men in traditional white tunics as opposed to suited businessmen. Low brick houses have taken the place of glass-covered skyscrapers, and sleepy shisha restaurants and local cafes dominate instead of major international chains. Surrounded by the desert, Al Ain is the second-largest city in the emirate of Abu Dhabi. It is only two hours from Dubai - ideal for a day trip. Al Ain was once a vital oasis on the caravan route to Oman, and even though the city now incorporates some international elements, including three shopping centres, it still provides a glimpse into the more authentic Middle East. To get a real taste of Arabic culture, I head to the camel souk, one of the few remaining such markets. Hundreds of camels and goats are brought here to change ownership. Men in traditional clothing negotiate prices, and one by one they leave with a camel or couple of goats on the back of their dusty trucks.

The Al Ain Fort is one of the main landmarks in Al Ain and has a wonderful public garden located nearby.
Al Ain lies at the foot of the mountain Jebel Hafeet, and is known as The Garden City of the UAE, thanks to the Al Ain oasis, the largest of several oases in the area. Today the oasis is a pleasant, green and cooling break from the surrounding arid desert, though at one time the oasis was considered so important that a fort was constructed to protect it from raiders. Al Ain Fort has now become a museum where you can see how people used to live before the formation of the United Arab Emirates. After a long day exploring and getting to know the area, there is nothing better than finishing the evening in the way the locals do, in a shisha caf. Smoking a shisha (a waterpipe, or hookah) is the favourite pursuit hereabouts, and on every street the locals can be seen in outdoor cafs relaxing with a coffee, some snacks and a waterpipe.

Also two hours from Dubai is Abu Dhabi city, another exciting day-trip destination. This rapidly growing metropolis is often referred to as Dubai's little brother, and a visit here highlights the contrasts with Al Ain. After wandering between skyscrapers and international shopping centres, it is time to head to one of the citys main attractions. It is five oclock, and the sun is starting to set. Beneath my feet, the marble tiles are giving up the warmth of the day, and as the evening draws in Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is illuminated by thousands of lights. The enormous white building is bathed in purple and green, resembling a fantastical palace and making a captivating sight for visitors. The Grand Mosque is one of the largest mosques in the world, big enough to accommodate 41,000 worshippers. This spectacular building features 1,000 columns, 82 domes and the worlds largest hand-knotted carpet, plus one of the largest chandeliers ever made 12 tonnes in weight. After such a spectacular experience, it is good to sit down to rest and to digest your impressions over a cup of coffee. Abu Dhabi is renowned for its excellent coffee, but why not try a new and exclusive twist to your brew? At the luxury Emirates Palace Hotel, the second-mostexpensive hotel ever built, you can order coffee sprinkled with real gold. In such lavish surroundings, dominated by gold and marble, the luxury is endless. In fact, the hotel uses as much as five kilograms of pure gold every year to decorate coffee and desserts. There is no better way to end your day in Abu Dhabi than with a stroll along the famous beach front, the Corniche. Even after dark it is filled with people and bustling with activity, and you can soak up the atmosphere while you feel the soft white sand of the beach between your toes. Restaurant Dar Yacout was designed by Bill Willis, a key member of the 60s hippie crew and the designer credited with bringing Marrakechi style to Europe. Arriving at the roof terrace for a pre-dinner aperitif feels very much like joining a private party. One can easily imagine the Stones at play here, served by slippered waiters, the sky turning pink and the air suffused by the call to prayer from the surrounding minarets. Downstairs, the experience shifts to 1,001 nights, all lanterns and rose petals, gnawa music and gargantuan portions served with much pomp and ceremony.
The fashion connection
JASoN tAbArIAS
Politicians and rockers are not the only people to have fallen for Marrakech. Fashion designers Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Balmain both owned houses here Balmains is now a restaurant called Dar Moha, serving arguably the best Moroccan food in town. Saint Laurent, meanwhile, is famous for rescuing Jardin Majorelle. The garden was designed by artist Jacques Majorelle in the 1920s and was in danger of destruction when Saint Laurent intervened and opened it to the public. Jardin Majorelle is a cool, shaded oasis of banana trees and palms, with an artists palette of ochre, burnt orange, lemon, sky blue and an intense, searing cobalt. The stems of the bamboo trees carry messages from previous visitors: Sabine loves Marc, Gary loves his wife (though hasnt bothered to name her), B+M=Forever. The garden also has a Berber museum, a small exhibition of YSL posters and a very nice caf.

inston Churchill once declared Marrakech the loveliest spot on earth. He was so enamoured with the city that he brought Roosevelt along too. Later, the hippie crowd arrived, led by the Rolling Stones. They, too, fell in love, and took to wandering the souks (open-air marketplaces) in hooded djellabas by day and lounging around private villas by night.
A different world
We enjoyed being transported, was how Keith Richards put it. Delve into the souks, and you will soon see what he meant. Labyrinthine and chaotic, they become more and more alien almost medieval the further in you get: veiled women whizz past on scooters, donkeys and carts block the way, cobblers and metalworkers labour in dimly lit rooms. In the stalls, brightly coloured slippers and kaftans give way to heavy, oversized jewellery, then on to spices and saffron vendors, via reptile skins and live

tortoises munching on salad leaves. It is a place to get lost, find a bargain and make friends. On Souk Semmarine I find myself drinking mint tea with Said, even though I have no intention of buying any of his carpets. Moroccan hospitality, he insists, and proceeds to tell me about Berber traditions and the history of the old townhouse were in. Two doors up, the affiliated Au Fil dOr sells djellabas and Moroccan jackets Bianca Jagger would have been proud to wear.
Riad cool
The Stones stayed in private villas during their visits, most famously John Paul Getty Jrs riad. The oil heir hosted legendary parties attracting the likes of Paul McCartney and John Lennon. Gettys villa is not open to the public, but there are plenty of riads in the medina that give a taste of the experience and without the need for a billionaires wallet.

Churchills favourite
Churchills love affair with Marrakech was also centred on art. His favourite hotel was La Mamounia, where he befriended Majorelle and captured the Atlas Mountains on canvas. La Mamounia has a Churchill bar and a suite named after its most famous guest, but for a flavour of what it might have been like in the great mans day, head for the gardens. The caf and ice cream parlour is open for non-residents, and is surrounded by venerable olive trees, which have stood almost as long as the enclosing medina walls. A stroll down the shaded pathways here is one of Marrakechs most peaceful experiences. In the distance, the Atlas Mountains overlook the hotel and the souks. Much may have changed since the days of Churchill and the Stones, but one thing remains the same Marrakech has the power to transport you.

ne example is an upturn in the Finnish tourist industry, where the number of overnight stays by Norwegians had fallen for three years in a row leading up to 2009, but in 2010 simultaneous with the introduction of Norwegians OsloHelsinki route the trend was reversed, since when visitor numbers have continued to rise. I am delighted to note the everincreasing number of Norwegians showing an interest in visiting Finland, enthuses Arto Asikainen, Area Manager for Visit Finland. In 2011 the number of overnight stays by Norwegians in Finland rose by 8.7 per cent over the previous year, and the positive trend looks set to continue into this year too. We have seen a 13.4 per cent increase in the number of overnight stays in the period from January to April 2012.
More flights, more tourists
of different factors involved in the growth in tourism, the rise in the number of flight connections has played an important role, he asserts.

Surveys carried out in the Stavanger region demonstrate that almost all the businesses exposed to competition are also represented abroad, either because they have offices there or because they sell their consultancy services there. Torill Ytreberg, Regional Director for NHO Mre og Romsdal, agrees that offering more routes both domestically and internationally makes business travel more efficient and affordable. Reduced travelling costs are vital for commerce. Moreover, having more players on the holiday and leisure market makes Norwegian tourism destinations more attractive and more accessible, explains Ytreberg.

Transport Economics (TI) show that air traffic within and from Norway has increased since the downturn in 2009 in the wake of the financial crisis. International flights to and from Norway have grown by 11.8 per cent per year over the last two years. The survey of travel habits also reveals that Norwegian has overtaken SAS to become the largest company for international traffic from Avinors airports. Over the last two years Norwegian has posted a 34 per cent increase in traffic, and 86 per cent of total international traffic has been to European destinations. Copenhagen is the most popular destination from Avinors airports, with almost 1.2 million journeys in 2011. In just a short time Norwegian has managed to create a new market for air
travel in Denmark. It has been able to offer flights to a section of the population that previously chose other means of transport, and has created an impressive new platform for travel in Denmark, reports Bo Pedersen, Communications Director for Naviair. This means that Norwegian is one of our largest customers in terms of traffic to and from Danish airports and through Danish airspace, he concludes.

Norwegian anniversary
the horizon
for Norwegian?
By Marius Solberg Anfinsen
Whats on
hen considering what moves to take in the future, Norwegian maps out travel trends and future traffic flows. Right now, we are looking at potential new markets. One of the main areas is the Asian market, and we expect growing demand for travel from Asia into Europe. The region has over time experienced high growth and a large number of people have increased their standard of living and purchasing power, adding to the demand for travel, says Norwegians CFO, Frode Foss.
Long-haul in 2013
Norwegian has broken new ground and undergone a rapid expansion in its first 10 years. Now the company is looking to Asia and the USA as its low-cost long-haul expansion is just around the corner.
There has been much speculation regarding which destinations will be included in Norwegians long-haul venture. Flights to New York and Bangkok are the ones most frequently mentioned. Im certain that well be able to offer return tickets to New York at our
signature low prices. Thanks to the fuel savings with the Dreamliner alone, we can offer much cheaper fares than our competitors, says Foss. He does not want to say too much about the specific destinations being considered, but he is more than happy to tell us about the exciting possible destinations within the range of Boeing 737-8 Dreamliners. He mentions places such as Miami, San Francisco, Havana, Los Angeles, Beijing and Cape Town. When we started up 10 years ago we added momentum to the trend for whole families to go and spend weekends at interesting places all over Europe, several times a year. Now, a weekend trip to New York is suddenly an option. And a few extra hours in the air will not be an inconvenience in a Dreamliner, as a lower equivalent cabin altitude means more oxygen and higher humidity, making
In 2002, Norwegian started off with four domestic routes in Norway. In January 2012, the company placed the largest-ever aircraft order in European history in order to offer a cutting-edge, cost-effective and environmentally friendly fleet. The listed price for the purchased planes was NOK 138 billion. The expansion is huge. This is a large investment for us, and an important one to achieve our strategic goal going forward. For us it is about making it affordable for everyone to travel and bringing our passengers to their destinations in the most efficient way. Our new fleet of environmentally friendly and cost-efficient aircraft is a major factor in achieving this goal. We

will continue to expand our operation in line with our passenger demand, this time adding momentum to the trend of making cities around the world your weekend destination, as well as keeping you online with WiFi technology on your journey, Foss explains. Norwegian has a basic philosophy that low costs for the company provide low prices for the passengers. With fuel accounting for one-third of the companys costs, having a modern fleet of aircraft flying with lower fuel consumption and lower emissions is a logical step towards offering continued high quality at low prices.
Taking the challenge
Arent you a little wary of venturing into new areas when parts of the global economy are struggling? The economy will always be subject to
fluctuations and, no matter what happens, people both need and want to travel. Low prices make it more achievable during economic downturns. Moreover, it is part of Norwegians DNA to take the challenge and make it work, rather than back off because of uncertainty. The world does not move forward by itself, and it is often during difficult times that big opportunities arise, when the economy needs to see growth from robust and sustainable business models. The long-haul endeavour can be viewed as a major and complicated leap forward, but it can also be considered as only adding a few new longer flights to our more than 300 existing routes. You have to think simple to make it simple, then work hard to make it happen. Some point out that we do not offer coffee and newspapers for free. We believe in letting our travellers choose for themselves
what to pay for on a journey lasting from as little as 40 minutes to at the most six hours. Customers should be treated as individuals, not groups. Given a simple low price, our travellers can add services based on their individual needs. This way more people can afford to fly, Foss enthuses. And finally, how do you see things panning out for your European short-haul operations? Even though parts of Europe are currently going through difficult times, our short-haul operations will continue to grow out of the Nordic region. Again, reasonable fares make travel possible for everyone, and our new fleet of aircraft will be an important contributor to growing our network, thus making even more destinations in Europe available to the traveller at affordable prices, Foss concludes.

A century
of Norwegian air power
Rolf Noel is the Norwegian Air Forces longest-serving pilot in the post-war period.
This year Norways armed forces are staging a series of events around the country to mark the centenary of the first military aircraft to take off from Norwegian soil.
By Norwegian Armed Forces / Jonas S. Rasch Photo Norwegian Armed Forces
Air power combined with land and sea forms a unified whole, with each part reinforcing the others, he explains. According to Major General Hannestad the development of Norwegian military air power has been driven forward by a succession of technological revolutions. But although there have been tremendous advances on the technical front, the human factor remains the same. Flying operating in a medium where humans dont naturally belong has always been a source of enthusiasm and enjoyment. And todays pilots are no different from the pioneers of yesteryear with regard to that particular point. When todays F-16 pilots meet up with those who flew in the early days and during WW2 it is easy to see that they are on the same wavelength, says Hannestad. Nowadays air forces play a key role in the defence of every nation. While the combat aircraft is certainly a cornerstone of the Norwegian Air Force, it must also be remembered that air force assets are used for transport purposes and for aerial surveillance. Every day the Air Force produces an aerial overview. In other words, they keep tabs on what is happening both within Norways national airspace and beyond. You could say that we police the skies by making sure that no aircraft violates our territorial integrity, says Hannestad. It is the Norwegian Air Force that operates the Sea King search and rescue helicopters stationed at various locations around the country, which are ready to scramble at a moments notice.
Century of Norwegian Military Air Power is a celebration and a look back to when we started military flying in Norway. At the same time it is an opportunity to show what we are doing today, says Major General Finn Kristian Hannestad, Inspector General of the Royal Norwegian Air Force. As head of the Air Force he would like to encourage everyone to attend one of the fantastic events taking place nationwide this year. They will have a great time, he adds. For Hannestad the START 100 years and the Kjeller Air Show are particularly important. START 100 commemorates the very first flight from Gannestadjordet near Horten, and the Kjeller Air Show is a spectacular event featuring both historic and modern planes. As he sees it, in addition to the main celebrations, which will take place in Oslo on 1 and 2 September, these two events perfectly illustrate how air power has developed over the years. It started in the Navy, continued in the Army, and as the biologists say when you cross two species together, you get the best of both.

In the past three years Norway has also had three helicopters stationed in Afghanistan on continuous stand-by to evacuate Norwegian and allied ground forces. Norway deployed F-16 combat aircraft to the Balkans in 1999 and has twice sent fighter planes to Afghanistan. The Norwegian Air Force was also highly commended for its performance during the recent Libyan conflict. But although Hannestad is pleased with the positive response his team received, he is keen to emphasise that the Air Force is not alone in deserving praise. Many other units worked hard to make it possible. It was a joint effort by the entire armed forces, he says. Hannestad points out that the pilots
who flew the Norwegian F-16s on missions over Libya were unmatched in terms of expertise and competence. At the same time that Norway is celebrating a century of military air power, the government has decided to replace the countrys fleet of F-16s with state-of-the-art F-35 stealth fighters. I am extremely pleased and proud on Norways behalf that we have decided to replace todays F-16s with a combat aircraft that will be hypermodern for the next 40 years. It is a fantastic decision. We will be involved in the deployment of one of the worlds most modern combat aircraft, and that is a task that we are looking forward to with pleasure, says Hannestad.
The logo of the Norwegian Armed Forces is composed of the wordmark and the Armed Forces coat of arms (shield or badge), which are subject to the same heraldic rules as the Norwegian national coat of arms.
Here is a list of the centenary events scheduled for the rest of 2012: 1-2 september 21 september 10 november

ot Chamonix - moniCa dalmasso
rivia question: Where was extreme skiing invented, and more importantly why? You need only visit the fabled destination of Chamonix in France once and look up way up to understand. Mont Blanc was first climbed back in 1786. Nearly 200 years later, local superhero Patrick Vallenant started the craze for near-vertical ski descents of the adjacent fearsome faces. The evolution continues to this day, with skiers from around the globe competing here in the famous Freeride World Tour, nailing 20-metre cliff jumps and throwing in the odd 360 for kicks. But wait, theres no need to panic. While Cham attracts its share of the shovel-and-backpack brigade, it also has heaps to offer normal folk. This is a full-service mountain town with plenty of accommodation, music and art events, shops and cafs, ski schools and all an easy one hour from Geneva. Best of all, your full lift pass covers both the free shuttle buses and no less than 11 ski areas dotted up and down the Chamonix Valley.
The biggest are Brvent and Flgre (both handily close to town) and the scenic end-of-valley Le Tour. Down at the opposite end of the long valley is the area of Les Houches, host of the annual Kandahar World Cup race. For Chamonixs most iconic destination, freeriders head to the Grand Montets gondola that rises above the hamlet of Argentire. My favourite place is Grand Montets, on the north side of Aiguille de Midi its wonderful and has so many possibilities for freeriding, says
Powder pig alert: perched close to Frances borders with Italy and Switzerland, the Chamonix Valley is a freeriding paradise.
Aurlien Ducroz, Chamonix local and Freeride World Tour 2011 champion. Aurlien grew up here, developing the skills and expertise required to dominate a tour that pits skiers and boarders against the steepest mountains in the world. The events are judged on aggressiveness of line, speed and fluidity, and Chamonixs terrain makes a win here the jewel in the crown. You only need to be a strong intermediate skier accompanied by a guide to enjoy one of the worlds all-time classic ski experiences: the Valle Blanche, a guided day-long tour whose start involves a few hairy steps on a fixed rope, rewarded by hours of gentle cruising through stunning serac-dappled snowscapes. Just over halfway along the 17 km route, youll have earned a lunch stop at the Refuge du Requin beside the magnificent Gant glacier. While were on the subject, in how many ski towns can you earn your stripes during the day and eat your Michelin stars at night? Youll eat well at La Maison Carrier at the Albert Premier Hotel or Le Bistrot, and dont miss LAtmosphre and Le Panier. As for nightlife, decades of Swedish ski bums cant be wrong about wild and sweaty hangouts like Chambre Neuf and Le Choucas.

Planted at the base of mighty Mont Blanc, Chamonixs rich mountaineering tradition is built on the majestic craggy peaks that surround it. Kitzbhel
Tyrolean treats
beer flows, the pistes roll, and tradition rocks.
By Leslie Woit
markus mitterer
he prettily painted medieval town of Kitzbhel is rightly proud of its Alpine tradition theyve been on skis here for 119 years. Its famous Hahnenkamm ski race, an honoured event in the World Cup world of speed and glory, has been wowing the world since 1931. Quite simply, Kitzbhel is the stuff of legends. This atmospheric Tyrolean town brims with beerfrothed charm, chic shopping, and fun nightlife. And while it attracts its share of fur coats and Fendi bags, all ages and types come for the skiing too. Weave your way across 170 km of slopes connecting the villages of Kitzbhel, Kirchberg, Aschau, Aurach and Jochberg, and the Thurn Pass. Served by 54 swift and modern lifts, peaks rise to 2,000 m above sea level. Just 2,000, you say? Its true, Kitzbhel can suffer during warm, dry spells, but in its defence, with terrain comprised largely of rolling pastures and grassy hills, a mere 50 cm of fresh snow ensures good conditions. Off-piste skiers and boarders also appreciate the relatively low level of Alpine hazards within 32 km of marked ungroomed ski routes. And it gets its share of powder, too. Nothing says Tyrol like a mountain hut serving up schnapps and smiles. Traditional specialities are dished up in cosy Kitzbhel huts: cheese, sausages, dumplings and goulash. Just off the Hahnenkamm at Berghaus Tyrol, a pan of warm Kaiserschmarrn, the sweet egg omelette topped with red berries first made for Emperor Franz Joseph, is worth walking uphill for. An amazing 500 km of cross-country skiing routes track across the wide, romantic valley floor (and a new high-altitude course with guaranteed snow just opened last winter). From the slick Sportpark Kitzbhel with its climbing walls and curling rinks, to ice hockey, tobogganing, and the rollicking Londoner Pub, Kitzbhel blends old and new with traditional hospitality and legendary cool. Alpe dHuez
Top shelf
By Leslie Woit Photo Laurent Salino
High on a sunny plateau, this French resort is a family favourite with more than a few delights to discover.
f youre a cycling fan youll know the 21 steep switchbacks of Alpe dHuez as one of the most gruelling climbs on the Tour de France. Winter sports fans love it for just the opposite reason: the big daddy descent. The terrain and the village at Alpe dHuez have something for everyone, especially families with children. Along with miles of smooth intermediate runs, the famous Sarenne is reckoned to be the longest piste in the world, 16 km of pure-white. There is a large dedicated beginner zone with four free lifts, and lift passes are free for under 5s. The creche accepts children from three months of age. Young freestylers can hit the park to be filmed on a big screen. Get the video immediately by SMS and share your talent with Facebook friends. The Grand Domaine ski pass includes not just Alpe dHuez but four resorts and two traditional mountain villages, and there is free skiing for beginners on several nursery slopes, too. Adults, teens, children: this place will burn all the energy you can muster. Try the family amusement park for children aged two years and up with skiing, sledging and electric quads. A little airboarding is good for a scream or two stomach-down and headfirst on an inflatable cushion down the mountain. Or perhaps some snow quad-biking, or gentler pursuits such as snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, ice skating or winter walking. You can zoom up the tele-village cable car from the traditional village of Huez to the on-mountain resort in five minutes. There is guaranteed highaltitude snow at 3,330 m on the sprawling Pic Blanc glacier, and 250 km of pistes fanning across the peaks of the French Alps. Best of all, we predict good weather. Perched high on a south-facing plateau at 1,860 m, there are an average of 300 days of sunshine a year here, according to Mto-France. So smear on your SPF, click into your bindings, and pack a camera. On clear days you can see one-fifth of the country fom the top of Pic Blanc.

Here are some invaluable websites for those trekking the Jotunheimen, giving route suggestions, details of overnight accommodation, maps and prices. Most treks take between five and eight hours, depending on the weather, your physical condition and how many photos youd like to bring back home! A reminder before you pack for the trip: the drama of Jotunheimen comes with ever-changing weather; a sunny morning can quickly turn into a freezing afternoon. www.visitnorway.com www.turistforeningen.no/english www.jotunheimen.no www.ut.no

he playwright Henrik Ibsen wrote about it; the composer Edvard Grieg added the score. Trekking across Norways rooftop is poetry, drama, fairy tale and adventure all crammed into one. The national park is huge: 1,151 square kilometres in size. Its south-western portion almost reaches Europes longest and deepest fjord, the Sognefjord. Exploring the mountain plateau of Jotunheimen leaves you with enough memories and stories for years to come. First, the good news: you dont have to be an expert climber or know the difference between a crampon and a crevasse to enjoy the unique attractions and manageable challenges of

Jotunheimen, The Home of the Giants named after the creatures that inhabit Norwegian myths and legends. Depending upon your choices and the length of your hiking itinerary, some of the jotuns can prove to be more than merely mythical giants: the national park boasts more than 250 peaks above 1,900 metres. It is entirely up to you, however, whether to ascend some of them, or to just settle for a snapshot from afar. Hytte-hopping More good news: you can travel light and leave your tent and camping gear at home. Towards the end of the 19th century, thanks to the
attentions of romantic artists and philosophers, mountains everywhere ceased to be seen as nasty, forbidding granite obstacles and became transformed into travel destinations. Proud of their soaring giants, patriotic Norwegians got busy erecting small cabins hytter to shelter the first wave of intrepid alpine tourists from weather that is never predictable and is always a conversation opener when you meet fellow Norwegian trekkers making their way from hytte to hytte. These early stone or log refuges have now been replaced by comfortable lodges, offering warm beds and hot meals (a three-course, home-made, hearty dinner is often priced

The construction of this impressive network of overnight lodges in Jotunheimen was the work of the Norwegian Trekking Association (known to all Norwegians as DNT), whose dedication to nature conservation dates back to 1868. Their first cabin, Gjendesheim, opened ten years later, and today this gateway to Jotunheimen can accommodate close to 200 guests. This is a capacity that is often needed, as Gjendesheim is where 40,000 travellers a year come to traverse the famous Besseggen, a narrow but safe ridge

wo blue eyes gaze warily at the large number of people entering the room at Okhadyt Hospital in the Ukrainian capital of Kiev. Alexandra (aged 6 months) soon sheds her initial reticence, however. Her little hands take a firm grip around one of the Norwegian fingers proffered and a bright smile lights up her face. In the cot next to hers, Bogdan (aged 2 months) starts to cry. He arrived a few hours ago, and the sights, smells and people are all new to him. When the nurses pick him up his crying ceases. Alexandra and Bogdan were both born HIV positive from HIV-positive mothers, and there are more and more babies like them in Ukraine. While the number of children born with HIV is decreasing globally, it is increasing in Ukraine. Ukraine has the highest rate of HIV in Europe, along with the highest number of pregnant women with the disease.
The apple of my eye
work is. They are focusing on the prevention of HIV and AIDS, distributing information and working to influence the authorities. We had the chance to see for ourselves how strongly affected the people we met are by the conditions they live under. Nevertheless, many of them talked about their hope and belief in life, and that really gave my motivation a boost. I am extremely proud to work for Norwegian and I have seen that our contribution matters, says Rune.
No child to be born with HIV
Alexandra and Bogdan were two of the children that Ingunn Kristine Skagestad and Rune Kleppers ambassadors from Norwegian met when they accompanied UNICEF on a visit to Ukraine. Together with Bjrn Kjos, CEO of Norwegian, they came to see for themselves how their UNICEF donations are put to use. We had the chance to meet people who are living with HIV. I made a real emotional connection with several of the people we met particularly little Alexandra, who was suffering from the effects of understimulation. Alexandra quickly became my favourite, says Rune, who works as a flight attendant. It was terrible to hear an HIV-positive man relate how he wasnt given the examinations he needed because his doctor was afraid of

becoming infected if he touched him. When even a doctor does not know how the HIV virus is passed on, you can understand why this group of people is so stigmatised, and how important it is to provide accurate information, says Ingunn Kristine Skagestad, who works at Norwegians head office.
It makes a difference
Last year, global leaders committed to eradicating HIV infection from mother to child by 2015. In an attempt to achieve this aim in Ukraine, UNICEF is working to encourage women to be tested for HIV. It is crucial to reach women at particular risk, such as prostitutes and injecting drug addicts. UNICEF supports clinics that provide counselling and medicine for pregnant women with HIV. In addition, UNICEF is working with the authorities to build up a holistic healthcare programme for pregnant women, with special focus on preventing mother-to-child infection.
Partnership
Ingunn and Rune witnessed a consultation with an HIV-positive woman, who was five months pregnant and was receiving follow-up and medicine from a UNICEFsupported clinic to ensure that her baby is not born with HIV. It was important for me to see that getting involved makes a difference, says Ingunn. Having visited the different clinics, orphanages and day-care facilities, I now understand just how important UNICEFs
Norwegian is a UNICEF signature partner, donating at least NOK 1 million to the organisation every year. The company is celebrating its tenth anniversary this year and will be holding an anniversary concert on 1 September to mark the event. Norwegian will be donating an additional NOK 1 million from ticket sales to UNICEF. For the boss himself, Bjrn Kjos, the trip to Ukraine confirmed that the partnership with UNICEF is right in every respect. There is no doubt that what Norwegian donates to UNICEF is worth every penny. I am really impressed with the work the
organisation is doing for the most vulnerable children in Ukraine. The CEO has only good things to say about the two employees who accompanied him on the trip. I cannot praise Ingunn and Runes input highly enough. They were magnificent when they met the children, displaying warmth and care that had an effect on everyone. I am proud to have two such excellent employees on my staff, and I am sure that they will spread the message about our partnership with UNICEF to their colleagues so that next
time we take a collection on one of our planes, everyone will rattle the collection tins with pride, he says. Bernt G. Apeland, Secretary-General of UNICEF Norway, stresses the importance of the partnership. We all bear responsibility for society in general, which is why UNICEF feels it is important that major operators from the business community like Norwegian make a contribution. We hope that this will inspire others to do something for children worldwide, says Bernt G. Apeland.
Norwegian and UNICEF have been working together for children since 2007. As a Signature Partner to UNICEF, Norwegian supports the organisations work of giving children the best possible start in life, and a safe and happy childhood.

He was a world-famous Norwegian who caught the attention of the entire world when he crossed the Pacific on a balsa-wood raft. Although criticised by the scientific establishment for his ideas, he refused to abandon his theories. Thor Heyerdahl (19142002) is a scientist who still captures the publics imagination, and this autumn a new blockbuster movie about him hits the big screen.

most enduring Heyerdahlssucceeded worldlegacy is that he in focusing the attention of the entire on a subject that is actually of fairly narrow scientific interest: how people arrived in French Polynesia. This is due to his extraordinary ability to communicate. He told the story of his journey across the Pacific Ocean on a raft in a way that led millions of people to rush out and buy a copy. In the USA, for example, 20 million copies of his book were sold in 10 years. That is fantastic, explains Halfdan Tangen Jr, Marketing Manager at the Kon-Tiki Museum.
Impossible expedition
individuals willing to take the risk. On top of everything, he could not swim though there was only one other person on board who knew that, says Tangen. Heyerdahl was also one of the first to visually document his findings, and the film of his expedition won an Oscar for best documentary in 1951. He also wrote a total of 22 books.
Early interest
Thor Heyerdahl made his name in 1947 when he, along with five other adventurers, crossed the Pacific on a raft made of balsa wood. The journey took 101 days and proved that Polynesia could have been settled by people from South America rather than Asia. The Kon-Tiki expedition is Heyerdahls greatest achievement. It was practically an impossibility. The planning took just six months at a time when Europe lay in ruins. There were extremely strict currency restrictions, National Geographic refused to back what they considered a suicide mission, and the balsa wood exporter thought the raft would not last more than a fortnight at sea. Although hardly anybody supported the theory, Heyerdahl managed to find a group of
Thor Heyerdahl was born in Larvik, the son of a master brewer. His mother was a Darwinist, and it is probably from her that the young Thor got his interest in zoology, a fascination that lasted his whole life. In 1937 he travelled to the island of Fatu Hiva in French Polynesia with his wife Liv. It was there that he learned from the islands elders that the native people came originally from South America. This was later to prompt the Kon-Tiki expedition. Voyages with the reed boats Ra and Tigris followed, in which he demonstrated that primitive peoples had mastered the art of sailing before the invention of the saddle or the wheel. He sparked controversy with his archaeological excavations on Easter Island, and although his theories were widely rejected, he never lost faith in them himself. Heyerdahl was driven by curiosity. If he had set himself a goal, he achieved it. But he was also a good listener,
Movie hero
A new film about Thor Heyerdahl and the Kon-Tiki expedition is due for release on 24 August. Kon-Tiki is one of the biggest movie projects ever undertaken in Norway. The movie is also planned for release in the other Nordic countries at a later date.
explains Tangen, who believes that the opposition he faced made him strong, but was also a little hurtful. A lot of the opposition was probably prompted by jealousy, and came from scientists sitting behind a desk, while Heyerdahl was engaged in experimental maritime archaeology. He built vessels in the way they were thought to have been made originally, and undertook expeditions across the worlds oceans. He believed that the winds and currents had provided highways, not obstacles, to contact between continents, says Tangen. Heyerdahl, he adds, was an early proponent of environmental conservation and intercultural collaboration. When he crossed the Atlantic in Ra, it was not simply to prove that it could have been done before Columbus. It was also to prove that people from different nationalities, religions, political persuasions and languages could work together for a common goal. Asked what we can learn from Thor Heyerdahl, Tangen replies: Believe in yourself. Do it regardless of the opposition. And plan well.
