INTRODUCTION TO THE COMPANY

Colt's Manufacturing Company (CMC), formerly known as Colt's Patent Firearms Manufacturing Company is a United States firearms manufacturer and an ISO 9001:2008 approved company, whose first predecessor corporation was founded in 1836 by Samuel Colt. Colt is best known for the engineering, production, and marketing of firearms over the latter half of the 19th and the 20th century. Colt's earliest designs played a major role in the popularization of the revolver and the shift away from earlier single-shot pistols. While Sam Colt did not invent the revolver concept, his designs resulted in the first very successful ones.

The most famous Colt products include the Walker Colt, Single Action Army and the Colt Python. The very famous John Browning worked for colt during the early stages of his career. Though they did not develop it, for a long time Colt was primarily responsible for all M16 rifle production, as well as of many derivative firearms. The m16 and its derivatives are still the standard issuing rifle of the U.S military and law enforcement services. In the year 2002, Colt's Manufacturing Company was split into Colt defense and Colt civil. Colt civil now serves the civilian market, while Colt Defense serves the law enforcement, military and private security markets worldwide.

This was the post civil war slogan in U.S.A., such was the impact of Sam Colt and his invention of a small arms weapon that could fire without reloading, a complete change over from the single shot weapons that required reloading after every single fire. Colts firearm manufacturing started from the year 1833; however large scale production only began after 1835 after receiving the U.S. patent. Since then this company founded by Sam Colt has been existent till now and been pioneering in many aspects of arms manufacturing. The company became popular for its products especially the revolvers. But it was during the late 70s of the 20th century that Colt also became popular for its rifles. The company became a globally known player in battle field assault rifles after its introduction of the M16 assault rifle which was inducted into the U.S army and which led to the subsequent introduction of newer derivatives and further acceptance by many other nations across the world like its small arms. Colts manufacturing company has two main factions 1. Colt Defense. 2. Colt Civil.

Colt Defense LLC, together with its subsidiaries, is a designer, developer and manufacturer of small arms weapons systems for individual soldiers and law enforcement personnel. It is headquartered in West Hartford, Connecticut of U.S.A. The company traces its portfolio of products and services back to Colt's Manufacturing Company and prior to that to Colt's Patent Firearms Manufacturing Company, and through those entities and its current structure, it has supplied small arms weapons systems to the United States Government and other governments throughout the world since the Mexican-American War of 1847. Colt Canada Corporation, its Canadian subsidiary, is the Canadian governments Center of Excellence for small arms and is the Canadian militarys sole supplier of the C7 rifle and C8 carbine. The company and its subsidiaries maintain manufacturing facilities in West Hartford, Connecticut and Kitchener, Ontario. It was split off from Colt's Manufacturing Company in 2002 in order to focus on the military, law enforcement and security markets. Sales to the U.S. Government (including U.S. Government sales to foreign governments) accounted for 57% of net sales in 2010 and 33% of net sales through the first three quarters of 2011. On October 14, 2010, the company announced that the Board of Directors had appointed Gerald R. Dinkel as President and Chief Executive Officer of the Company, succeeding Lt. Gen. William M. Keys, who remains on the Board of Directors as Chairman.

Colt Civil is mainly devoted towards catering to the needs of its civilian customers and other small scale private services for rendering them with personal security, sporting and protection needs. It split of from its main company in the year 2002. The main purpose for this independent subsidiary was to concentrate on its different categories of customers in a more efficient manner. This separation has indeed helped in this goal and thus made the company more capable of bringing in customized and modified versions of its products to cater to the civilian requirements.

PRODUCTS of THE COMPANY

Colts Army Model 1860: Right after the American civil war the first most famous model manufactured by Colt was the Colt Army Model 1860. It was a muzzle-loaded cap & ball .44 caliber revolver. It was used as a side arm by cavalry, infantry, artillery troops, and naval forces of that time right upto the early 1910s. Such was its popularity and track record. After this successful period of its establishment years it came up with various products across the years to cater to the needs of the American security forces and other forces around the world. Some of its famous models are as follows. Colt M1900:

The Colt Model 1900 was a self-loading semi-automatic .38 caliber handgun introduced by Colt at the turn of the 20th century. It also marked the introduction of .38 ACP, the round for which it is chambered. It was one of the path breaking designs developed from the earlier models of John M. Browning.

Colt Double Eagle:

The Colt Double Eagle is a double-action / single action, semi-automatic pistol manufactured by Colt's Manufacturing Company between 1989 and 1997. It was available in standard full-size, as well as in more compact versions. It features a decocking lever, and was chambered for several calibers. The family of models was known as the Series 90. Colt Anaconda:

Introduced in 1990, the Colt Anaconda is a large frame double-action revolver featuring a full length under-barrel ejection-rod lug and six round cylinder, designed and produced by the Colt's Manufacturing Company. Chambered for the powerful .44 Magnum and .45 Colt Centerfire ammunition cartridges, the Anaconda marked the Hartford, Connecticut firms first foray into the popular large-bore Magnum pistol market.

Colt M16:

The M16 (officially Rifle, Caliber 5.56 mm, M16) is the United States military designation for the AR-15 rifle adapted for semi-automatic, three-round burst and full-automatic fire. Colt purchased the rights to the AR-15 from ArmaLite, and currently uses that designation only for semi-automatic versions of the rifle. Since the Vietnam War, the M16 rifle family has been the primary service rifle of the U.S. armed forces. The M16 has also been widely adopted by other militaries around the world. Total worldwide production of M16-style weapons since the design's inception has been approximately 8 million, making it the most-produced firearm of its caliber. As of 2010, the M16 is being phased out in the United States Army, and is being replaced by the M4 carbine, which is itself a shortened derivative of the M16A2.
