Welcome to the Doggie Den!
Welcome to the newest member of the F. A.
March school community-team M & M! March
is lucky to have our neighbor, Mrs. Linda
Martin and her certied therapy dog, Millie, as
part of our family. Team Martin & Millie arrive
each week to meet with grade 2 students in
the doggie den, a special place for the children
to share stories, read ashcards, and perform
skits to a PAW-fect listener, Millie.
This program was set into motion after Mrs.
Martin and Millie were certied through
Therapy Dogs Incorporated, and were looking
for a way to provide some service to the local
community. Mrs. Pasquel coordinated the
idea of a new therapy dog literacy program,
which helps to support uency and can build
condence in our young readers.
To help students and teachers acclimate to
the idea, a large stuffed prop dog was
provided to the teachers so they could prepare
to meet Millie. In addition to the stuffed
animal, teachers were encouraged to share
one of three stories about how therapy dogs
can assist people, such as working with the
blind and deaf, helping law enforcement, and
assisting those who may have physical
limitations. MORE ON PAGE 4
They are currently ranked 1st in 4th
Grade Math24 across the entire district and
91st in the state. Keep up the hard work!!

Hunger Essay Contest
March School is off to a good start using
First in Math Online Program in grades 2,
3, and 4. First In Math activities employ Deep Practice
techniques to rapidly increase computation, problem
solving, critical thinking and essential math basics. Skills
that may take months of regular practice can be mastered in
a much shorter time using Deep Practice techniques and the
immediate feedback online learning can provide. Children using
FIM have shown dramatic increases in math scoresacross the
board from the top students to the most math-challenged
learners. We are excited to see students'
active engagement in the program again
this year. Classrooms have already
started earning weekly trophies for being
the team of the week in their grade.

Kindergartens Who is in the
igloo?
In kindergarten, we were discussing igloos
when working on the letter I. We read the
story The Three Snow Bears, by Jan Brett,
which features three polar bears that live in an
igloo. We then compared and contrasted that story with the original story of
Goldilocks and the Three Bears. After discussing both stories, the students
created an igloo, and drew a picture of what was inside of the igloo. The
students finished their project by writing a sentence that answered the
question Who is in the igloo?
March PTA Update
Giving
Tree
The March School PTA
spread some holiday
cheer with the Giving
Tree Project. Gift
requests were placed on
the Giving Tree. Parents
and staff were able to
shop for one of the items
on someones wish list.
Thanks to everyone for
their kindness and
generosity in bringing a
smile to a childs face.
The March Book Project
by: K. Petrignani
" Earlier this month your young learner came home with "new
to them" books that are theirs to keep. Children were also able to
pick a book for each of their younger siblings that are not attending
March yet.
" These gently used and loved books have been donated to
the March Book Project by the March family, community members
and the Easton Public Library.
" The art room was turned into a little boutique book store for
your children to make their selections and close to 2,000 books
have made their way into the loving hands of your children this
December.
" Enjoy sharing the books with your children this holiday
season. Nothing is more wonderful to your child than sitting on
your lap and sharing a good book.
Book Donations
We are always happy to receive
gently used books that your
children are ready to share with
others.
There is a brightly colored box
in the cafetorium provided for
your book donations.
You can also contact Kate
Petrignani at
katepetrignani@verizon.net to
donate books.
A big thank you to all the
volunteers that made our
latest book event possible
including Mrs. Limas, Mrs.
Farnsworth, Mrs. Amacker,
Mrs. Schafer and Mrs Febbo.
Thank you Mr. Bonilla for
your support , Mrs. Ramirez
for your help and to the Art
teachers for letting us turn
their classroom into our
bookstore that week.
Thank you Mrs. Horvath of
the Easton Public Library for
supporting our project with
the generous donation of
books.
I truly hope that I haven't
forgotten anyone . Now go
read a book.
Students were prepared to work
with the therapy dog through
review of the doggie den rules
and were provided with practice
scenarios using a stuffed
animal. Mrs. Keglovitz, or
Mrs. K as the students call
her, is a staff member in our building who escorts
the children to and from the Doggie Den. We
especially appreciate her willingness and
enthusiasm in assisting with this new endeavor.
All grade 2 students are invited to visit if they
choose, and teachers are following a schedule. Mrs.
Laslos class was the first to visit the doggie den,
followed by Mr. Nagles class, Mrs. Rodrigues
class and Miss Waas class. In order to make the
program
successful and
provide time for everyone, students visited in small
goups, so if your child hasnt visited yet, their time
will come soon.
The students have been very excited to work with
Team Martin and Millie and
we hope to hear more tails from the doggie den in
future issues of the Little Leopard news!
In November, we kicked off
our third annual Student Mystery
Readers. 3rd and 4th grade
students went into classrooms
throughout the building and read
Halloween stories. This past
week, Dec 18
&19 we
had our
second
event.
Student
read
different
versions of
The Night
before
Christmas. Two different
versions of the sane story
was read to every class.
Student Mystery
Readers are for 3rd and 4th
grade students only and is
optional. Students sign up
and then are randomly chosen
to read on one of the Student
Mystery Reader Days through out
the year. This year we had 110
students sign
up and will be
having five
events.
They
received a
special reader
hat to wear
while reading
and then keep
them. The mystery part is that
classroom students know
someone is coming to read to
them but they dont know who,
when, or what book.
Our student readers did an
excellent job of reading to the
students. Students and staff had a
great time hearing the stories.
Look for our next Student
Mystery Readers in March for
Dr. Seusss Birthday!

Barnes & Noble Night
Our Dec 13th Barnes & Noble
night was a success for our rst
one. We had 70 students attend
and the March library raised
approximately $700 to use for
books for the students. Ms.
Waass class had the most
attendance and won a Cookie
Party. Jamal L won a book for
the Mighty Eagle Hunt.
Abstract Art
Hurricane Sandy reminded
students at March that we
have much to be thankful for.
This month, students were
inspired by the abstract work
of Paul Klee and wrote
messages of thanks following
his abstract style.
Enjoy all kinds of foods! That's good advice for kids-and for you. When kids learn to
enjoy many foods, they have more choices for smart eating throughout life. That's
good because different foods promote growth and health in different ways. Food
variety makes eating more interesting and fun, too. Remember: seeing, trying,
comparing, and talking about different foods is part of learning. Stay tuned in future
publications and with recipes on tips to get your kids to try and enjoy new foods.
Fresh Fruit and Veggie
Program
The new Leopard mascot was in
attendance and prowling around.
Veterans Acrostics
The Second Grade
classes took time to
remember our veterans.
We discuss how Veterans
makes us feel and created
acrostic poems to show
our feelings.
Second grade learned a lot
about the history of football
and the traditions of the
Easton vs P'burg game. !The
students celebrated the big day
by wearing Easton colors and
sports wear. !They also made
footballs and graphed how far
different size footballs went. !
It was a great day! !

Its Hip to Clip: Boxtops
Our Little Leopards are doing a FAME-
tastic job of clipping Box Tops for the
2012-2013 school year. We set a goal of
raising $1,500.00. The money earned
through the collection of Box Tops will
help to fund our FAME prizes.
We are so excited to share that our school
has already collected $761.00 in box tops.
What a fabulous job! Just wait until you
see our new Box Tops tracking chart in the hall. It will be up
soon! Don't forget to clip box tops and bring them into school
because its HIP to CLIP!

The fourth graders at March
Elementary School are
building birdhouses. Each
student receives a small kit
and glues the pieces
together. Then, an adult
nails and strengthens the
sides. Finally, the houses are painted a variety of bright
colors. All of the construction is completed over a few days
during the recess block. It is hoped that more hands-on
activities will be done throughout the school year.
