I don't really understand this question so will just explain. I was prospective parent at Garrison for PS-3 and quite intrigued by what I heard about the school. But I crossed it off my list of schools to consider in the lottery after the closing was announced. If plans were changed and Garrison were to stay open, I would consider it again. But I'm OOB so it's probably unlikely I would get in. Garrison is a family some people do not have. Note that "test scores" and "Cardozo" are reasons NOT to enroll, but the PTA and location are reasons TO enroll.

Page 3, Q1. If Garrison offered a language program?

Our son has been speaking Spanish and English most of his life, and we would like to maintain that. We may choose a bilingual school over Garrison, if Garrison does not offer Spanish and other options are available that do. If we sought out charter school options for our son it would probably be to enroll in a bilingual program. It would be great to have that in our local school. Unless Garrison is one of the best school of the country I like the idea of a language program but, the location of Garrison is really the reason I would like to send my child. My older child has language opportunities after school at his public school. Language is great and would be a small plus. However, the overall quality of the education is more important to me. Would have to be very well thought out and executed well. My toddlers have a Spanish speaking caregiver and my husband speaks Spanish. Important in these days to speak multiple language. it is more inclusive and encourages development of another area of the child's brain.

Page 3, Q3. If Garrison offered an integrated arts program?

1 2 3 4 5 6 7

Arts are crucial for child develoment. Y Because arts programs improve imagination and are important in children development. I believe arts is essential particularly at the younger ages Fillmore is a better program than Garrison could have on its own. Again, probably a small plus for me. I understand that presently the children take a bus once a week to an arts center. I think there is value and enrichment in the act of going to a different campus for a "special" activity like this. So an arts program at the school would be great, but its value would be offset, in my mind, by losing the weekly "field trip" experience. I don't think there is enough emphasis on art in many schools and it gives kids a more well rounded education. My husband and I are musicians and believe in molding creative minds! Would be nice, not a priority for me. (What REALLY matters is school/educational quality overall.)

1 2

Same answer I'm not sure how an "integrated program" would differ from how I expect the current curriculum to incorporate Science/Technology, Social Sciences, Environment/Sustainability, and Global education. I would like my kids to have a heavier exposure to science. More ways to reach each child to help them develop and learn In general, more options mean more opportunities for my child.

1 2 3

Garrison sits in the middle of a thriving community. I would be proud to send my child to a school that sees itself as a center of that community. Garrison can connect more deeply to the area aound it, which is growing at a rapid pace and moving in a very positive direction. I think this would enhance the integration of the school with the neighborhood and increase the community's commitment to making Garrison a vibrant, central element of the neighborhood. So the community could become more envolved and have ways to interact and support the school Community and schools should go hand in hand!

Page 4, Q1. If Chancellor commits to fully modernize Garrison by end of 2014?

1 2 3

Garrison is in terrible shape. Full modernization would be a demonstration of commitment and seriousness on the part of DCPS. A modernized school would be nice but wouldn't change how I feel about Garrison Because the school looks like a prison with air conditioning devices sticking out of windows. In 2012, I expect the architecture to be more transparent, with more sunlight and colors, and more environmentally friendly. Garrison is on the right track and has the potential to be a desirable school if Chancellor Henderson commits to keeping the school open and the facilities are renovated. Timing would be ideal. New stuff is always nice. Their commitment would give me faith in our choice to send our kids there, knowing that they won't face the instability of closure/transfer. I want my child to be able to go to a school that can have great indoor and outdoor facilities.

Page 4, Q2. If Garrison were to be consolidated with Seaton at Seaton's location?

1 2 3 4 5 6

Seaton is too far and does not have community involvement Seaton's scores are terrible, and I am not aware of a strong principal there. If that school leader does reach out to Garrison families, that would help. Garrison should be building on its strengths at its current location. Too far away. Overcrowding and lower academic achievement. Too far away, concerned with community involvement and proximity So much progress has been made at Garrison and so many people have put a lot of work into improving the school. Also Seaton has poorer academic performance and is further from our home. No, I would not send my children to a school that is further away, with less community involvement, for worse test score. Who would? Location, state of schools facility I will not send my child to Seaton. In the alternative, we are exploring public charter school options, private school and moving. Overcrowding It is farther away and my experience with Garrison has been so great. I am a member of the loagn circle community association and they have been so involved with Garrison. That is really where I want my child to go. The teachers and principal seem so committed to its success and the new library is a great start. Seaton is not an acceptable choice for our family. We live a block away from Garrison. It's location is a major reason why we find it attractive. Part of the appeal is giving our children the neighborhood-based education they deserve, in the strong community in which we live. We would likely try to lottery in to another school with better programs. too far, Seaton has no parental involvement, closing Garrison would be a sign to me that DCPS does not care about parents who are trying to turn a school around. Why would I send my kids to a school system that feels that way???? Too far for students. No point there not doing better than Garrison. And I have to drive there it's not walkable. Walk is too long. Test scores are lower. It would eliminate the convenience of Garrison, and the intimate link between Garrison and our community, both of which are the reasons we have been

considering Garrison at all. It would simultaneously raise concerns about safety (especially in getting there), overcrowding, and probably having to move schools again in a few years, which I think would be very hard on the little ones.

Page 5, Q1. If Shaw Middle School were relocated at Cardozo High School?

1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9

I'm a lot more troubled about the empty building at Shaw right now. it is wasted space in a beautiful neighborhood. Unlikely to keep kids in school in after elementaryp Location, quality of environment With a 2 1/2 year old daughter, I really haven't considered middle and high school scenarios. Not informed on this matter. I think 6th graders are too young to be with older kids unless the class size is really small like at a small private school. I will not send my kids to shaw middle school or cardozo regardless. Its a landmark for a high school I would have to see what it was like. My oldest is in 2nd grade, I don't know what it will be like. Though I don't really want my 6 or 7th Grader at a school with 12th graders. It's kind of the like moving the 6th graders from the lower grades only to put them with the 12th graders that does not make sense. I see pros and cons here...

Page 5, Q2. If the middle and high schools that Garrison feeds into were stronger?

I currently see public and charter elementary school options in this neighborhood, but no secondary schools that are strong enough. In their current states, our son would not go to Shaw or Cardozo. It would be nice to not have to put my child's education in the hands of the lottery. Better middle and high schools will keep parents of high-performing kids at Garrison for longer, making it a better school in higher grade levels. more supportive So my kids have the best school they can within our neighborhood. I would have checked "a lot more likely" except that there are several years for improvement to occur before this is a real issue for me. At this point we assume that we'll have to go private by grade 7 anyway. This makes private elementary seem more necessary (to ensure admissions/enrollment for middle and high school).

Page 7, Q2. If the scenarios you ranked as your top four become a reality, will you enroll/keep your child at Garrison/contribute your time and resources to Garrison?

1 2

As long as Spanish is offered in the language program. Contribute resources, absolutely. Child is at another school now, not sure if I would move him under any improvements. Absolutely know we would use the facilities and do anything we could to strengthen. Absolutely! Maybe Scenario ranking above not working. I can't answer this question since I'm OOB, but if that happened it would be a strong contender for our lottery application. Probably The ranking system didn't work for me but yes, if what did really matter happened I'd consider it. Middle and high school are most important. Very likely!

If a lottery to a better schools is not available, sadly we plan to move. Awaiting final decisions about Garrison, but if they close we will scramble to find the best option our children deserve. N/A

Page 8, Q6. Are you likely to enroll your child in a DC Public School?

1 2 3 4

Quality of education depends on lottery I believe in public education and believe that all children should have a neighborhood school. Because my background is in education and I believe in public education. But, I want the school my child goes to to be supported by the community and have a strong principal with excellent teachers which I believe Garrison has. We believe in the institution of public education. my other child attends a DC public school through the lottery Strong believer in public education A lot depends on whether Garrison stays open and whether our daughter is accepted to the preschool program. We can't afford private, we love DC and have put a lot into our community. Too soon to tell. Would like to but not convinced its viable yet. My son already goes to a DC public school only if Garrison stays open and does not merge with Seaton Because I would like to support the improvement of DCPS. Hoping they will the support our kids by giving there schools the tools they need to help the students I believe in public education. It depends whether Garrison is closed. No children of school age
