Dr. Muhammed Majeed

Dr. Muhammed Majeed is the inspiration and motivation behind Sami and the Sabinsa Group of Companies. Dr. Majeed has a Ph.D in Industrial Pharmacy. After a decade and half of working with respected names in the American pharmaceutical industry, Dr. Majeed first set up Sabinsa Corporation in New Jersey, USA in 1988. He later set up Sami Labs Limited Bangalore, India in 1991, with the vision of research, development and marketing of a new genre of products natural therapeutics. Over the past two decades, the organization has grown into a health science multinational with presence in USA, Europe, India, Japan, Australia, China, UAE, South Africa and Brazil. It employs over a 1000 people with four manufacturing locations in India and one in USA. Its research facility in Bangalore has over a hundred scientists involved in specialized work in the areas of phytochemistry, organic chemistry, biochemistry, tissue culture and plant biotechnology. Today, Sami holds a strong intellectual property portfolio with several US and international patents to its credit apart from awards and recognitions worldwide.

Research & Development

Finding new light
Recognized by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, Sami R&D is a multi-disciplinary division pursuing diverse fields of research. The R&D also works closely with the Government of India and the Indian Pharmacopoeia Committee on preparation of Standard Operating Procedures for Ayurvedic herbs and monographs for Indian herbs. Equipped with the best of talent and facilities, Sami research is geared to constantly innovate and sustain high quality output to broaden the product portfolio, enrich its intellectual property and build up a robust pipeline of products.

Biological Research:
This department tests the safety and efficacy of the products developed in the R&D i.e. cosmeceuticals and nutraceutical products. They have developed several in vitro models for testing anti-obesity, anti-diabetic, anti-ageing and several other disease conditions. Nonanimal toxicity testing is also undertaken.

Analytical R&D:
It is a key function in the R&D and it supports all the development activities. Their important roles are: Method development Validation Development of specification for all products and Quality control & Quality Assurance

Formulations R&D:
This department develops natural cosmetic products that have properties to rejuvenate and protect the skin from environmental pollution, toxic chemicals and Ultraviolet A and B radiation resulting in wrinkling, hyper pigmentation (excessive tanning) and inflammations (sunburn). The department also develops dosage formulations in capsules, tablets etc for the nutraceutical products.

Natural Drug Division:

This division focuses on identifying, isolating and developing drugs from various natural source having a potential to become a drug.

Phytochemistry:
This division does the isolation and development of active ingredients from herbs for various nutraceutical and therapeutic applications.

Biotechnology:
Sami Labs ventured into Biotechnology in the year 2000. LactoSpore is the first commercial production using the in-house R&D technology. This division is currently involved in the production of high-value enzymes as well as other probiotics .

Synthetic Chemistry :
Sami Labs has set up a strong synthetic chemistry division to manufacture some of the synthetically derived nutraceuticals. Corporate Social Responsibility

Considering the importance of biodiversity of medicinal plants and to maintain the sustainability for future generations, the company has taken up a successful initiative over the last 10 years by undertaking and promoting large scale commercial cultivation of medicinal plants globally. SAMI initiated almost a decade ago, medicinal plant cultivation with a handful of farmers. Over the years this effort has translated into a large scale cultivation model involving more than 40000 acres and supporting thousands of farmer families. Sami supports its farmers with a buy back guarantee , crop insurance, bank finance and ensures they receive a reasonable price for the produce avoiding intermediaries. Today, this successful model is being replicated in Africa and South East Asia.
