Social 30-2 ASSIGNMENT III Suggested time: 45 minutes Your local newspaper interviewed three citizens selected at random and asked them to respond to the following: Do ideological differences undermine international peace and security? Citizen 1 As far back as we care to look we can find examples of wars being fought because of ideological differences. Whether it is political, economic or religious, when people cling to an inflexible way of thinking, conflict ensues. People do not think in the same way and when issues that are important enough to individuals come into conflict, resolving differences peacefully will not occur. Citizen 2 The world has changed since the First and Second World Wars. More and more, nations have adopted a liberal philosophy. We have learned from these mistakes of the past and as a result we realize that we have to be more tolerant of differences and develop creative solutions to problems. I believe that the differences in ideologies are actually what make the world a special place. The Twenty-First Century is destined to right the wrongs of the Twentieth Century. Citizen 3 It is impossible to agree with a blanket statement like that. Every nation acts independently on every issue. Some nations can agree on the economic principles but disagree over politics. Many nations can cooperate to save the environment but cannot agree on territorial boundaries. It is not that ideologies undermine security; ideologies are merely a starting point. Its the issues themselves and the individual leaders and nations that can undermine peace.
