It was a beautiful day and the fifth graders in Miss Guerras class couldnt wait until she took them out to the yard for the schools annual sports day. Lisa had been practicing for the long jump all week. When Miss Guerra announced it was time, everyone cheered! They rushed outside like a swarm of bees. The coaches divided the students into groups based on their sporting events and asked them to get in line to await their turn. The long jump was the first sporting event. Lisa was fifth in line. It seemed like an eternity, but finally, it was her turn.

Lisa placed her feet at the starting line and, as soon as the coach gave the signal, she ran as fast as she could. As she came up to the jumping line, she leaped into the air. She felt the sand under her shoes when she landed. She knew it was a good jump, but not good enough. She could see there was another marker from a longer jump in front of hers. She felt so disappointed, she almost cried. As she made her way back to the starting line for her second jump, she could hear her little brother proudly cheering her on. Suddenly, she remembered what her father always told her: Practice makes perfect. Lisa knew she was ready.
