Activity 6.

09 Template, Option 2 LLLL

NOTE: The dimensions 2 x 5 x 9 are an EXAMPLE and may NOT be used for your project. Name: ___________________________________________________ Date: _________________________

Title: ____________________________________________________________________________________ Materials: ________________________________________________________________________________ Procedure:

1) Find a box in your home or school (ex. shoebox, cereal box, etc.) a. Describe your box in a complete sentence: _____________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________ __ b. Identify the length (L), width (W), and height (H) of your box to the nearest inch: i.L = ________ in. , W = ________ in. , H = _________ in. (do not use 2 X 5 X 9) 2) Find the volume (V) of your box: a. V=L*W*H i.V= ________ * ________ * ________ ii.V = ________ in 3) To set up a polynomial equation that will represent the volume of your box, follow these steps: V = L*W*H ____ = ______* ______ * ______ ____ = x * (x ) * (x ) 4) Now its time to simplify and write the equation in standard form! a. Show your work below as you write your equation in standard form. i.Use distributive property to multiply.( Do FOIL first, then distribute the x) ii.As your last step, subtract the number for volume from both sides so you have 0 on the left in your final answer!

5) Now we will find the solutions to our equation. {Collab Partner:__________________________} Please write your equation OR your partners equation (if collaborating) on the line below: P(x) = _____________________________________________ a. Fundamental Theorem of Algebra i.The degree (highest exponent) of the polynomial is _________ , so the polynomial has________ total zeros.

b. Rational Root Theorem i.The value for p is: ______ i. The factors of p are: +/- ______________________________________ ii.The value for q is: ______ i. The factors of q are: +/- ______________________________________ iii.The possible rational roots of the polynomial are: +/- ______________________________________________________________ c. Descartes Rule of Signs i.There are _______ sign changes in the polynomial P(x), so the function has _______ positive zeros. a. Remember to also subtract two from your answer, if possible. b. Your function has _________________ positive zeros.

ii.When we find P(-x), our function is: P(-x) = ______________________________ i. There are _________ sign changes in the polynomial P(-x), so the function has ________ negative zeros. a. Remember to also subtract two from your answer, if possible. b. Your function has _________________ negative zeros. iii.According to the Fundamental Theorem (see #5a), there are ________ total zeros.

Option A

Option B

# Positive Zeros # Negative Zeros # Complex Zeros TOTAL ZEROS

iv. vi. viii. x.

v. vii. ix. xi.

d. Find the solutions using Synthetic Division i.Test possible rational roots to see if they are zeros of the function. a. Remember, when you get a 0 remainder, then that number you tested IS a zero for your function! ii.Once you have found one zero, use Quadratic Formula to find the other two zeros. a. Show your work below and circle all of your zeros.

6) Graph the function in Geogebra. a. Go to www.geogebra.org and download the Webstart program if you do not already have it. b. In the input bar at the bottom, type in your standard form function and then hit Enter to graph it: y=____________________________ Next, click the drop down arrow in the lower right corner of the New Point icon.

Choose Intersect Two Objects from the drop down menu. Then click the curve once, and click the x-axis once. (The program will now find the zeros for you on the graph!)

7) The real zero(s) of your function (shown in the graph) are: x = _____________________ a. The degree (highest exponent) of your function is _________ , so the function you graphed is a _______________ function. b. Describe the end behavior of your graph (Circle one): i.My function has an (even / odd) degree. ii.Therefore, the ends will travel in (the same / opposite) directions. iii.The left side continues (up / down). iv.The right side continues (up / down). c. Provide a picture of your graph below. You may either: i.Put picture in a Word document: i. In Geogebra, go to: File, Export, Graphics View to Clipboard, Paste (into a Word document).

d. How do the solutions of the equation compare to the length of the box, and the x-intercept of the graph? i.Are the solutions the same or different as the length of the box?

ii.Are the solutions the same or different as the x-intercept of the graph?

8) Conclusion (Please use complete sentences): a. What did you think of the project?

b. What did you learn?

c. Do you have any questions or concerns?
