Howhavewechangedtheworldoverthepast200years bothlandscapesandtownscapes?Itsanimpossiblyhuge question,butarecentexhibitionatDulwichGalleryinLondon gavemeachancetogetapartialbutveryspecificideabylooking atNormandyapartoftheworldIknowandlovewell.John CotmanwasamongasmalltidalwaveofBritishartistsenabledto visitFrancewhenthedefeatofNapoleonandtherestorationof themonarchybroughtanendto30yearsofenmitywithEngland. CotmanfocusedhisattentionsonNormandy,principallybecause hefoundthereasublimeandcompellingcombinationof evocativelandscapeandgrandarchitecture. Normandyhadbeenformanycenturiesoneofthe wealthiestandmostdevelopedprovincesofFrance,tradingwith theworldthroughitsportsatDieppe,HarfleurandRouen.Being relativelyneartoParis,itsrichfieldsandpasturesprovidedmuchofthebutter,cheese,eggsand milkconsumedinthecapitalandtheplaceswhichCotmandepicted,justbeforetheIndustrial Revolutionstartedtotransformthem,seemtohavegrownslowlyandliterallyorganicallyintotheir presentcondition,whethercrumblingruinsorvastbusycathedrals,greatsweepingwatermeadows orbroodingjaggedoutcropsofgreybrownrock.
