School/Administrator

Principal Christi Gochenour 8th Hour

Date of Pre-Conference

Date/Time of Observation October 18

Grade level/Curriculum Area Observed 1. Briefly describe the students in this class, including those with special needs. 8-11 Grade students of mixed ability levels, include to students with IEPs

8th Grade Through 11th Grade Geometry 4. How do you plan to engage students in the content? What will you do? What will the students do? Students will be asked to list properties of triangles they already know and the lesson will add to their knowledge. Students will be working in groups to solve proofs which will be discusses as a whole class. They will individually work on their homework assignment. 5. What difficulties do students typically experience in this area and how do you plan to anticipate these difficulties? Students will struggle with writing the proofs on their own. To help with these difficulties, students will work in groups to discuss the proofs and we will talk about them as a whole class. Students will be allowed to use their notes and Theorems sheet as well. 6. What instructional materials or other resources, if any, will you use? (Attach sample materials you will be using in the lesson.) I will be using a PowerPoint to organize the lesson and to help students take notes. I used the online book resource to help write the lesson.

2. What are the goals for the lesson? What do you want the student to learn? Students will be able to: Find measures of angles of triangles Use parallel lines to prove theorems about triangles Define and apply the triangle sum and triangle exterior angle theorems 3. How do these goals support the districts curriculum? These goals support the standard for meeting the Iowa Core which is what the district uses. Supports Common Core Standard: G.CO.10 Prove theorems about triangles. Theorems include: measures of interior angles of a triangle sum to 180 7. How do you plan to assess student achievement of the goals? What procedures will you use? (Attach any tests or performance tasks with rubrics or scoring guides.) Informal Assessment: asking students questions and monitoring group work to assess their understanding Formal Assessment: homework assignment Pg. 175-177 9-18 (3s), 20, 21, 25, 26, 32, 34

8. What Iowa Teaching Standards/criteria will be demonstrated in this observation? Highlighted on separate piece of paper. 2d, 3c, 3d, 4b, 4c, 4e

Teacher comments pertaining to observation setting: List any items you might want to call to the attention of the administrator. The students should be working in groups discussing how to solve the problems and set up proofs. With each section, the students should be getting better at explaining their thought process in solving problems. **I modified the lesson from my original plan because a student from the previous class had a really great idea about how to visualize proving the angles of a triangle add to be 180. They asked if we could cut the corners off a triangle and make a line to prove they add to be 180. It worked really well in the previous hour and it helped them to develop the thought process to write the proof of the Angles Sum Theorem and use the theorems they had been taught in prior lessons.
