The Importance of Personal Time with God

Like any relationship, our relationship with God develops with time and contact. God desires our time with Him to be personal and unique, not formula-like. For many of us, personal time with God is something difficult to grasp. Perhaps our own father never spent much one-on-one time with us and, in turn, it seems impossible to believe that the God of the universe would want to be with us either. These are the struggles many people have as they embark on a personal relationship with God. Know that these feelings of unworthiness are lies fueled by Satan, who wants nothing more than to derail any relationship you may develop with your Heavenly Father. It is important that you understand the truth of Gods love and commitment to you; realizing that will fuel your desire to spend one-on-one time with the Lord.

Set a time to meet with God that is free of distraction (or as free as possible). Many people find that mornings are best for this. Realize that the enemy will try to distract you and keep you from this time. he knows the power of personal times with God. Think of it as if the President of the United States made time to meet with you each day before work. You would MAKE time in your schedule to keep that meeting. Realize that the God of the Universe wants time with YOU, to bless, instruct, and to love you. A note to young mothers: Although tiredness and child distractions will tempt you to skip your devotions, the very BEST thing you can do for your kids is to meet with God on a regular basis. It will bless them in ways you cannot imagine. Bible reading should be a part of your devotions.

Here are a few verses that speak of Gods love and passion for you:
How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O God! How vast the sum of them! If I should count them, they would outnumber the sand. Psalm 139:17-18
O taste and see that the Lord is good; How blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him! Psalm 34:8

Hebrews 4:12 says, The word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
Let the living word penetrate your heart. Keep bookmarks where you are reading to give yourself a point of reference when you begin your devotions. Some people read a chapter of the Old Testament and a chapter of the New Testament. Reading a Psalm to begin your time with God can help you to focus your mind on the Lord. Another suggestion is to read a Proverb a day. Proverbs is a general book of wisdom and there are 31 of them: one for each day. If you have never read the Bible before, a good place to begin is with the Gospel of John. It gives a wonderful picture of who Jesus is.

Your lovingkindness, O Lord, extends to the heavens, Your faithfulness reaches to the skies. Psalm 36:5 But in all these things we overwhelmingly conquer through Him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels nor principalities, not things present, nor things to come, nor powers, not height nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8:37-39
The following are merely suggestions of ways to enhance your personal time with God; be open to God speaking to you in unique and special ways. He is infinitely creative as well as boundless in His love and desire to know us.

Take time to listen. God will speak to you if you listen to Him. Use a journal to record what He says to you and write down any insights that you get from reading the Bible.

Spend time in praise and worship. You may be vocally challenged, but that doesnt matter. Getting a good worship C.D. and listening and singing along can bring you greater intimacy with the Lord. Spend time in prayer. Prayer is your communication with God. This is truly personal interaction between the two of you. It can involve prayer for those around you. It can involve confession of sin (Ps. 66:18) or worship of the Father. Prayer is powerful and God Himself will pray through us when we dont know how (Romans 8:26-27). God does not condemn you if you miss your time with Him Romans 8:1: God never condemns us but Satan will. Dont let the fact that youve missed times with God tempt you to throw in the towel with feelings that God is somehow mad at you. Satan will try to fill your mind with those kinds of thoughts because the LAST thing he wants you to do is spend time with God. Recognize the source. If your own child was gone for a long time, would you, in anger, refuse to meet with him if he contacted you? Of course not! God eagerly waits to meet with His children. His love is unconditional.

Understanding Our Position in Christ

Many Christians live unaware of their position in Christ, either through ignorance of biblical promises, or through believing the deceptions of Satan. In order to live as victorious Christians it is vital to have an understanding of who we are in Christ.

Our Identity
How do you see yourself? Who are you? These are questions that that can plague us. We have been programmed all of our lives with messages telling us that we are inferior, causing us to doubt our abilities. Everyone reacts differently to this sense of inadequacy; some hide behind a wall of arrogance and pride while others can be virtually immobilized by the accompanying feelings of worthlessness. The REALITY is that you are no longer the same individual you were before you received Christ as your Savior. The following diagram illustrates the fact that you were transferred from the kingdom of darkness into the Kingdom of God (Colossians 1:13). The lies you were told came from the Father of Lies who sought (and seeks) to enslave you. As a Christian, you are no longer bound by the power of the enemy. However, you need to know, believe, and apply the truth if you are to live in freedom.

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ. Ephesians 1:3
As we read this verse we need to focus on the word every. This means that there is not a single spiritual blessing that we have not received as Christians. Ephesians was written by Paul, who at that time was a prisoner in Rome. It had to be apparent to the Ephesian church that Paul was not referring to material blessings. Paul had no possessions and was in chains in a Roman prison. Yet the blessings that Paul speaks of are more relevant to our lives than anything that we can receive physically.

Who We Are In Christ

There is a reference here to heavenly places that occurs four other times in the book of Ephesians. This comes from a Greek word epouranios: what pertains to heaven. Look at the four other references and answer the questions:

Ephesians 1:20-21 Ephesians 2:6 Ephesians 3:10 Ephesians 6:12

Who is seated in the heavenly places? What is He seated above? Who is seated with Him? Who will be an example of Gods wisdom to the rulers in the heavenly places? What is our struggle against? Where does this struggle take place? Refer to 2 Cor. 10:3-5, 2 Cor. 11:3, Romans 8:7

Jesus is the one seated in the heavenly places, far above every name that is named, and we are seated with him (2:6). Ephesians 6 makes it clear that our battle is against demonic spiritual forces and that the focus of the battle is within the minds of men.

Forever Different Kingdom of Darkness

Transformed
Romans 12:2 Our minds must be renewed (reprogrammed) These are true, even if they may feel like they cant possibly be true

We must not let the enemys accusations relating to our behavior influence our perception of our identity, instead we must allow our identity as a child of God to influence our behavior.

Application
If we live unaware of our position in Christ or of the spiritual battle that we are facing, we can expect to live without experiencing the fullness in this life that God intended for us to enjoy. Jesus said in John 10:10 I came that they might have life, and have it abundantly. This means a life that is fruitful and full of spiritual blessings that will have an impact on the world around us.

Renewing Our Minds

Although we are spiritually seated in the heavenly places with Christ, we still have a mind that is used to the thought patterns, ideas, and assumptions of the flesh. Satan seeks to capitalize on this by feeding Christians lies and deception geared toward keeping us from walking in the power and authority of our position in Christ. When we walk in spiritual power, we become a tremendous threat to the forces of darkness. Satans only weapon against one who is in Christ is deception.

9 Believing lies makes us ineffective; truth helps us to stand firm. The Word of God is described in Ephesians 6 as the sword of the Spirit. It is our offensive weapon against the enemy. The following sheets are summaries of the spiritual blessings that we have in Christ. Read them over, memorize and meditate on who you are in Him. Saturate yourself with the truth of your position in Christ. Jesus said that the truth shall make you free.. (John 8:32)

How to Walk in the Power of the Holy Spirit

From Have you Made the Wonderful Discovery of the Spirit-Filled Life? By Bill Bright New Life Publication 1. The Bible describes three types of people: The Natural Person (one who has not received Christ) The following are four principles for living the Spirit filled life:

1. God has provided for us an abundant and fruitful Christian life

Jesus said, I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly John 10:10 The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. Galatians 5:22-23 I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing. John 15:5

Love Joy Peace Patience Kindness Faithfulness Goodness

A natural man does not accept the things of the Spirit of God; for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually appraised. 1 Corinthians 2:14
Self-Directed Life
S-Self is on the throne - Christ is outside the life -Interests are directed by self, often resulting in discord and frustration

2. The Spiritual Person (one who is directed and empowered by the Holy Spirit)

He who is spiritual appraises all things. We have the mind of Christ 1 Corinthians 2:15-16
Christ-Directed Life
- Christ is in the life and on the throne. S-Self is yielding to Christ -Interests are directed by Christ, resulting in harmony with Gods plan.

Life is Christ-centered Empowered by Holy Spirit Introduces others to Christ Has effective prayer life Understands Gods word Trusts God Obeys God

3. The Worldly (Carnal) Person (one who has received Christ but who lives in defeat because he is trying to live the Christian life in his own strength)

The degree to which these traits are manifested in the life depends on the extent to which the Christian trusts the Lord with every detail of his life, and on his maturity in Christ. One who is only beginning to understand the ministry of the Holy Spirit should not be discouraged if he is not as fruitful as more mature Christians who have known and experienced this truth for a longer period.

Brothers, I could not address you as spiritual but as worldlymere infants in Christ. I gave you milk, not solid food, for you were not yet ready for it. Indeed, you are still not ready. You are still worldly. For since there is jealousy and quarreling among you, are you not worldly? Are you not acting like mere men? 1 Corinthians 3:1-3
Self-Directed Life
S-Self is on the throne - Christ dethroned and not allowed to direct the life -Interests are directed by self, often resulting in discord and frustration

2. Worldly Christians cannot experience the abundant and fruitful Christian life. The worldly (carnal) person trusts in his own
efforts to live the Christian life. He is either uninformed about, or has forgotten Gods love, forgiveness, and power (Romans 5:8-10; Hebrews 10:1-25; 1John 1; 2:1-3; 2Peter 1:9; Acts 1:8) He has an up-and-down spiritual experience He cannot understand himselfhe wants to do what is right, but cannot

14

He fails to draw on the power of the Holy Spirit

to live the Christian life (1Corinthians 3:1-3; Romans 7:15-24; 8:7; Galatians 5:16-18)

How, then, can one be filled with the Holy Spirit?

4. We are filled with the Holy Spirit by faith; then we can experience the abundant and fruitful life that Christ promised. You can appropriate the filling of the Holy Spirit if you: Sincerely desire to be directed and empowered by the Holy Spirit (Matthew 5:6; John 7:37-39) Confess you sins. By faith, thank God that He has forgiven all of your sins past, present, and futurebecause Christ died for you (Colossians 2:13-15; 1 John 1; 2:1-3; Hebrews 10:1-17). Present every area of your life to God (Romans 12:1-2) By Faith claim the fullness of the Holy Sprit, according to:

Some or all of the following traits may characterize the worldly person---the Christian who does not fully trust God:

Legalistic attitude Impure thoughts Jealousy Guilt Worry Discouragement Critical Spirit Frustration Aimlessness

Fear Ignorance of his spiritual heritage Unbelief Disobedience Loss of love for God and others Poor prayer life No desire for Bible study

(The individual who professes to be a Christian but who continues to practice sin should realize that he may not be a Christian at all, according to 1John 2:3; 3:6-9; Ephesians 5:5)

3. Jesus promised the abundant and fruitful life as the result of being filled (directed and empowered) by the Holy Spirit. The Spirit-filled life is the Christ-directed life
by which Christ lives His life in and through us in the power of the Holy Spirit. (John 15

One becomes a Christian through the ministry

of the Holy Spirit, according to John 3:1-8. From the moment of spiritual birth, the Christian is indwelt by the Holy Spirit at all times (John 1:12; Colossians 2:9,10; John 14:16,17).

Though all Christians are indwelt by the Holy

Spirit, not all Christians are filled (directed and empowered) by the Holy Spirit on an ongoing basis.
ing life (John 7:37-39)

HIS COMMAND: Be filled with the Spirit Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, Be filled with the Spirit (Ephesians 5:18) HIS PROMISE: He will always answer when we pray according to His will. This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to His will, he hears us. And if we know that hears uswhatever we ask we know that we have what we asked of Him (1 John 5:14,15) We are filled with the Holy Spirit by faith alone. However, true prayer is one way of expressing our faith. The following is a suggested prayer:

The Holy Spirit is the source of the overflow The Holy Sprit came to glorify Christ (John
16:1-15) When one is filled with the Holy Sprit, he is a true disciple of Christ.

In His last command before His ascension,

Christ promised the power of the Holy Spirit to enable us to be witnesses for Him (Acts 1:1-9)

Dear Father, I need you. I acknowledge that I have sinned against You by directing my own life. I thank You that You have forgiven my sins through Christs death on the cross for me. I now invite Christ to again take His place on the throne of my life. Fill me with the Holy Spirit as You commanded me to be filled, and as You promised in Your Word that You would do if I asked in faith.

15

Walking in the Spirit..Spiritual Breathing

If you become aware of an area of your life (an attitude or an action) that is displeasing to the Lord, even though you are walking with Him and sincerely desire to serve Him, simply thank God that He has forgiven your sins---past, present, and future---on the basis of Christs death on the cross. Claim His love and forgiveness by faith and continue to have fellowship with Him. If you retake the throne of your life through sina definite act of disobediencebreathe spiritually. Spiritual breathing (exhaling the impure and inhaling the pure) is an exercise in faith that enables you to experience Gods love and forgiveness.

Exhale: Confess your sinagree with God concerning your sins and thank Him for His forgiveness of it, according to 1 John 1:9 an Hebrews 10:1-25. Confession involves repentancea change in attitude and action. Inhale: Surrender the control of your life to Christ, and receive the fullness of the Holy Spirit by faith. Trust that He now directs and empowers you, according to the command of Ephesians 5:18 and the promise of 1 John 5:1415.

We are destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ." 2 Corinthians 10:3-5
A stronghold is a practiced way of thinking. It begins in childhood through wounding in our lives.

What are the weapons of our warfare?

Know the truth of our position in Christ and the author-

ity we have as believers. Jesus said, "...the truth will make you free" John 8:32 scribed as an "offensive" weapon against Satan in Ephesians 6:17. Use the meditation/memorization system.

Renew your mind. (Romans 12:1-2) God's Word is de-

Think about what you are thinking about. The enemy

Into each wounding, a lie is inserted. These lies eventually become "normal thinking" for us.
Example: A woman grows up with a distant and unloving

will attack your mind. 2 Corinthians 10:3-5 states, "...we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ." Learn to discern God's thoughts from the voice of the enemy. Exercise faith, which is belief in God and His Word. "In addition to all, take up the shield of faith with which you will be able to extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one." Ephesians 6:16 of life to Christ.

father. Into these experiences of childhood wounding a powerful lie is inserted; something must be wrong with me or else my father would love me. This lie affects her self image, her relationships and interactions with others, and her perceptions of God. She begins to expect that people will reject her because she is flawed. As life experiences appear to confirm this belief, the deception becomes entrenched and more powerful.
A stronghold is established: Similar to the process of

Walk in the power of the Holy Spirit, giving every area

Pray, praise, and give thanks to God for circumstances,

especially the ones that are difficult (Galatians 5:16-17)

Fellowship and prayer with other believers. (James 5:16)

building a brick wall, lie upon lie a structure is formed in peoples minds. This affects their perceptions and allows the enemy to exercise control. In the previous example, the woman bought the painful lie that something is wrong with her and that she could never be truly loved. She may not consciously be aware that she thinks this way, but her actions reflect her beliefs. The result is a woman who fears rejection, has trouble with intimacy, has poor self-esteem, and never seems to be able to develop a close walk with the Lord.

This can include getting prayer ministry (healing prayer) from the body of Christ. As much as we would secretly like to deal with our issues alone so that we can appear "together" in front of others, God did not create us to function independently from the healing influence of other believers.

Discerning Gods Words from Those of Satan

What We Think About Matters
2 Corinthians 10:3-5 For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh, for the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but divinely powerful for the destruction of fortresses. We are destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ. Colossians 3:1-3 Therefore if you have been raised up with Christ, keep seeking the things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on earth. For you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God. Philippians 4:8 Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, think on these things. Romans 12:2-3 And do not be conformed to this world, but by transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect. Proverbs 23:7 For as a man thinks in his heart, so is he.
The above verses make it clear that what we think about is critical to how we live, and how we fare in the spiritual battle. It is vital that we begin to think about what is consuming our thoughts. Studies have shown that most people spend 80% of their thought life dwelling on negative things, literally giving Satan access to their minds 80% of the time. Every thought originates in one of two places: the kingdom of heaven or the kingdom of hell. Satan will plant thoughts in your mind and he will generally do it in the first person, so that you will think that it was all your own idea. The following are ways of discerning between the thoughts originating with God versus the enemy:

1. The enemy will discourage or condemn. Conviction (the Lord) versus Condemnation (the enemy)
It is important that we understand the difference between conviction and condemnation. God will correct us through His conviction, but He always does it in a loving manner. It is similar to the proper discipline any good parent would use to correct their child. In contrast, the enemy has no interest in you repenting. on the contrary, he simply wants you to feel so lousy and defeated that you will give up even trying. Condemnation Example: I am such a lousy parent.look what I just said to my child. Truth : There is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death. Romans 8:1 Is a tactic of Satan Attacks the person Produces discouragement and defeat Conviction Example: I shouldnt have said that to my child. I need to ask their forgiveness. Is a way that God lets us know that weve sinned Never attacks the person, focuses on the action or attitude that is wrong Produces repentance and restoration

2. The enemy will plant negative thoughts, causing you to walk in fear, anxiety or worry.
Example: What if my job is cut in this next round of layoffs? What will I do? (Can you detect the fear produced by this simple what if?) Truth: God has not given us a spirit of fear but of power, love and a sound mind. 2 Timothy 1:7 Part of having a sound mind is having the ability to discern truth from lies. Fear prevents us from walking in truth and power, which is why the enemy uses it so much.

20

3. The enemy will tempt you to judge and condemn others.

Example: I cant believe what she just said. What a conceited person! Truth: Judge not and you shall not be judged. For in the way you judge, you will be judged; and by your standard of measure, it will be measured to you. Matthew 7:1-2 The enemy is well acquainted with the laws of God, which were originally instituted for our benefit, not for our harm. If we bless others we will ourselves be blessed. However, the enemy knows that if we condemn and judge others, we ourselves will be condemned and judged in like manner. He will tempt you to be judgmental and critical of everyone around you, thus wreaking havoc in your own life. Evaluating whether or not an action is right or wrong is a positive type of judgment that is necessary in order for us to make wise decisions. The type of judgment that Jesus refers to in Matthew is a condemning attitude towards a person or group. Summary: We can be so accustomed to thinking condemning, fearful, or judgmental thoughts that thinking that way seems normal to us. It is the way that weve operated for years! It can be a surprise to learn that the thoughts that we have been thinking have their origins in the realm of darkness. While we are responsible for what goes on in our mind, Satan can and will attempt to influence us to think in certain ways. Learning to discern when the enemy is attacking your mind is crucial. When you find that you have been dwelling on the things of darkness, repent, ask forgiveness, and ask God to fill your mind with His thoughts. Satan cannot handle resistance from a Christian. James 4:7 says:

Submit therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man; and God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, so that you will be able to endure it. 1 Corinthians 10:13 References: The Importance of Forgiveness John Arnott Battlefield of the Mind by Joyce Meyer

The Importance of Meditating & Memorizing Gods WordMeditation System

Meditating on the Word of God has life-changing effects, yet this discipline eludes many Christians. And no wonder. . . the enemy of our souls would like nothing better than for us to be ignorant of Gods law and His promises. Hosea 4:6 says, My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. wants us to do with His Word. Think on it. Ponder it. Ask God, What does this mean? How does this apply to me? He loves that!

It Keeps Us from Sin

Knowing Gods Word is a protection from sin in our lives. Psalm 119:11 says, Thy Word I have hidden in my heart that I might not sin against thee.

A Weapon in the Spiritual Battle

In Ephesians 6:12-18 Paul describes the spiritual war that Christians engage in on a daily basis and he describes the Word of God as a sword in our spiritual battle. In fact, prayer and the Word are the only offensive weapons described.

It Is Like No Other Book

For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places(v.12) and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.. (v.17)
Obviously, if we dont use the Word of God or know it very well, it cannot be used as the spiritual weapon it is meant to be.

Perhaps you have memorized things in the past for school or work and found the process difficult. The Bible is like no other book. It is unlike anything else that is written because it actually is alive. Gods Word lives and accomplishes Gods will. As we memorize and meditate on Scripture, it changes our lives, our responses to others, and our direction.

The Word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joint and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart. Hebrews 4:12 So will My word be which goes forth from My mouth; It will not return to Me empty, without accomplishing what I desire, and without succeeding in the matter for which I sent it. Isaiah 55:11

A Promise of Success and a Prosperous Way

God gives an amazing promise based on the Word in Joshua 1:8, This book of the law shall not depart from your mouth; but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it; for then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have success. This was the instruction given to Joshua as he assumed command of Israel following the death of Moses. Meditation has assumed a mystical reputation in recent years because it is used in some Eastern religions. Eastern meditation is an attempt to empty the mind; however, Biblical meditation fills the mind with the truth found in the Word of God. Think of an important conversation that you have mulled over and over in your mind. That kind of focus is what God

The Scripture Memorization and Meditation System

All of these are reasons why we should meditate on and memorize Scripture. The following is a meditation system that can help in the process. Its nothing fancy. . . you can keep this sheet folded in your Bible as a bookmark where you are currently reading. Youll see seven boxes and then a space. There are seven sections of those seven boxes. Each section is a week and each box is a day. List the verse that you are memorizing on the line and then each day check a box as you go over it in your mind. (You can write the verses on the back so that you dont have to keep looking them up as you are learning them.) Do only one verse a week. When the first section of seven boxes is checked, add a second verse below the first. Now you are going over two verses a day and checking them. The third week you add a third verse and so on. . . You should have a staggered effect on the sheet with the checked boxes.

22 After the seven weeks are up for that first verse, you transfer it to the Once a Week sheet. This has groups of four boxes. Now you only go over that verse once a week After you do the once a week verses for seven weeks, you transfer them to the Once a Month sheet. These verses are reviewed once a month. (Doing it the first of each month can help you to keep from forgetting.) What this does is keep track of the verses that youve memorized and helps you to review them regularly so they stay fresh in your mind. It takes less than five minutes a day to do and has life changing effects. Take up your sword!!!

Does What We Say Really Matter?

A Look at the Impact of the Tongue
We speak many words during the course of our day. Speaking is so natural for us that it can be easy to lose track of how much impact what we say has on the lives of those around us. According to the Bible, words have tremendous impact for both giving life and for producing death. A quick review of the book of Proverbs reveals no less than 94 verses in Proverbs alone devoted solely to instruction on what to say and what not to say. 7. Gracious speech brings favor and leadership "He who loves purity of heart and whose speech is gracious, the king is his friend " Proverbs 22:11 8. Truthful words save lives "A truthful witness saves lives, but he who utters lies is treacherous." Proverbs 14:25 Just as wise and discerning words can give life and joy, careless and angry words produce death and destruction. The old saying, "Sticks and stones can break my bones, but words can never hurt me" could not be more unbiblicall! Our words can have a devastating impact on those around us. Hurtful, careless words produce death: 1. Godless words destroy people Definition: Godless: not acknowledging God or divine law. "With his mouth the godless man destroys his neighbor..." Proverbs 11:9 2. Rash words wound those around us Definition: Rash: words marked by undue haste or lack of deliberation or caution. "There is one who speaks rashly like the thrusts of a sword...." Proverbs 12:18 3. Slander and angry words abuse others Definition: Slander: the utterance of false charges or misrepresentations which defame and damage another's reputation. "But now you also, put them all aside: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and abusive speech from your mouth." Colossians 3:8 4. Filthy, coarse joking is not fitting "and there must be no filthiness and silly tally or coarse jesting, which are not fitting, but rather giving of thanks." Ephesians 5:4 5. Gossiping destroys relationship and reputation Definition: Gossip: a person who habitually reveals personal facts about other people. "He who goes about as a slanderer reveals secrets, therefore do not associate with a gossip." Proverbs 20:19

"Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit." Proverbs 18:21
Wise words give life: 1. Pleasant words can produce both spiritual and physical healing "Pleasant words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones." Proverbs 16:24 2. Timely words can give both joy and delight "A man has joy in an apt answer, and how delightful is a timely word!" Proverbs 15:23 3. Righteous words can dispense both wisdom and knowledge "The mouth of the righteous flows with wisdom...." Proverbs 10:31 "The lips of the wise spread knowledge...." Proverbs 15:7 4. Gentle words can turn away anger "A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger." Proverbs 15:1 5. Edifying words give grace (blessings) to those who hear and draw people towards relationship with God "Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word as is good for edification according to the need of the moment, so that it will give grace to those who hear." Ephesians 4:29 6. Right words can increase persuasiveness ...sweetness of speech increases persuasiveness." Proverbs 16:21

"He who conceals a transgression seeks love, but he who repeats a matter separates intimate friends." Proverbs 17:9

30 6. Harsh words stir up anger Definition: Harsh: words that cause a painful or irritating reaction; rough, crude "A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger." Proverbs 15:1 7. Foolish words bring ruin Definition: Foolish: words lacking in judgment or wisdom. "...with the mouth of the foolish, ruin is at hand. " Proverbs 10:14 8. Flattery sets a trap for the one who gives it Definition: Flattery: to praise excessively for motives of selfinterest. "A man who flatters his neighbor is spreading a net for his steps." Proverbs 29:5 get us into a train of thought that affects how we then communicate with others. We can't watch hours of soap operas and not think that our thought lives and our words will not be impacted. We need to ask ourselves, "Could I watch this and feel comfortable if I knew that Jesus was in the room with me?" Sometimes there are people in our lives that steer us down the wrong path thought-wise and conversation-wise. It takes prayer to evaluate:
Is this a person I should be talking with? 1 Corinthians If it is a person that I need to stay in relationship with, how Is there an accountability person that can help me to stay

can I communicate with them in a godly way?

Take some time and read through James 3:1-12. As you read through this chapter, what is the tongue compared to in verses 3 and 4? -In verse 6, the tongue is 3. Reliance on the Holy Spirit compared with something else. What is it? Only the Holy Spirit can enable us to get control in this area. What is the tongue capable of? (verse 6) James 3:2 says, "...If anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man, able to bridle the whole body as well."

righteous when I'm with this other person? Is there a person in my life who I can pray with that will hold me accountable for what comes out of my mouth?

Practical Application:

As we look through Scripture, we can see that there is great potential for good and for evil in what we say. How can we be righteous in what we say? Is there a way to control the tongue? 1. Ultimately, what we talk about is what we have been thinking about. "As a man thinks in his heart, so is he." Proverbs 23:7 Think about what you have been thinking about. Colossians 3 tells us to "set our minds on the things above". What we talk about indicates where our minds have been.

Praying and asking the Holy Spirit to help us in the area of controlling what we say is the only way to be victorious. A prayer that can be helpful in controlling the tongue is Psalm 141:3 where David prays this:

"Set a guard, 0 Lord, over my mouth; Keep watch over the door of my lips."

Guarding our minds, having personal accountability, spending regular time with God, and relying on If we have been thinking critical thoughts, we'll be critical the Holy Spirit specifically in this area, can enable us to speak in what we say. words of life and healing to those around us. If we have been preoccupied by the affairs of others, we'll engage in gossip. If we hold onto anger, we will speak harshly. If we neglect spending time with God and reading the Bible, our words will reflect it. If we expose ourselves to pornography or other questionable material, it will be reflected in how we interact with others, and even in what we think is humorous or acceptable. 2. Limit or eliminate our exposure to material or people that adversely affect our thinking. Obviously, pornography or violent material falls into this category. But sometimes we expose ourselves to things that are not as obvious in their effect on our thought lives. T.V. shows, movies, romance novels, or certain people can

Authority in Prayer
Recommended reading and resource: Authority in Prayer by

Dutch Sheets

It is important to understand our authority in prayer in order to have victory in the spiritual battle being waged in the physical realm.

2. Authority Saw a Change in Possession at the Fall Satan succeeded in taking earths headship from Adam Jesus acknowledged Satans earthly authority by calling

him the ruler of this world (John 12:31; 14:30; 16:11)

Jesus came to regain the headship Adam had lost (Luke

1. Gods original intention was that His creation would be governed through human beings.
Then God said, Let Us make man in Our image, according to our likeness; and let them rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the cattle and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth. Genesis 1:26

4:18-19) Jesus took the form of a human and thus became legally qualified to take our place on the cross and restore authority to adam. Jesus became the new human head over the earth (Ephesians 1:22, Colossians 2:10)

The Hebrew word Adam means human being (a

little like naming your dog, dog.) God was making a point, however. Adam was His prototype; he represents all of us. We can trace our ancestry back to him in order to receive our nature and our inheritance. ALL adams (human beings) were given authority over the earth. Because of this delegated authority, anything that God wants to do on earth, He must do through human beings or adams. God works through humans, which is why, in spite of Gods sovereignty, things get messed up here on earth.

3. Where God and Satan are concerned, the issue has never been power; it is a question of authority Scripture does not say that Christ delivered us from Satans power. His power did not change at Calvary. What Jesus dealt with was Satans authority. If Satans power was gone, hed be a non-issue and there would be no spiritual war. We could ignore him. Power and authority differ: Power is the strength or force needed to rule. Authority is the right to do so.

We need to deal with Satan as a usurper, a rebel, and a thief who has no right to steal, kill and destroy, but WILL if he is not stopped.

Examples of God working through humans to govern earth: God negotiated with a human over whether or not He

4. God wants to enable each of us to triumph over evil, governing our personal world in every circumstance. Govern: to direct and control. When we receive Jesus as Lord and Savior, He gives us God has given us jurisdiction of our world under His authority. His authority as His children.

would judge a city. Genesis 18:26-33 God waited for a man to pray so He could send rain. 1 Kings 18:41-46 God needed an intercessor to ask Him to spare a people. Ezekiel 22:30-31 God asked a prophet to prophesy to a nation in order that He might restore them. Ezekiel 37:1-14 God needed to become human to redeem the human race. John 1:14

Colossians 1:13 He delivered us from the authority of darkness

Matthew 28:18 He took back the authority for us that Adam lost
This affects the way in which we pray. God wants us to be in tune with His purposes on earth so He can govern through us and impact the world.

Behold, I have given you authority to tread upon serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall injure you. Luke 10:19
We can pray with authority, binding Satan legally, and God will back us with His power. What will determine victory for us is understanding and exercising authority.

Introduction to Bible Study Methods

Reference: Bible Study Methods by Rick Warren Why should we study the Bible?
All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. 2 Timothy 3:16 Scripture helps us grow spiritually so we might be equipped for Gods purpose for our lives teaching shows us the path rebuking shows us where we got off the path correcting tells us how to get back on the path training in righteousness teaches us how to stay on that path

Get the Right Tools:

1. A good study Bible. 2. An exhaustive concordance. A concordance lists every usage of every word in the Bible and gives all the references where that word may be found. 3. A Bible dictionary and/or encyclopedia. 4. A topical Bible (this categorizes the verses of the Bible by topics, instead of words). 5. A Bible handbook (Halleys, Holman, Ungers or Zondervan are the best). 6. Commentaries. A commentary is a scholarly collection of explanatory notes on a particular Bible book or section. 7. E-sword is a free down-loadable computer resource that gives the original Hebrew and Greek words and meanings as you scroll across the text. There are many approaches to Bible study. One of the easier methods is the Devotional Method of Bible Study. It is described here as a possible introduction for someone new to studying Scripture. This is a simple method that can be used during a devotional time. For more in-depth study, refer to Bible Study Methods by Rick Warren or the Inductive Method, popularized by Kay Arthur, described later in this manual.

Principles of Bible Study Keep a notebook. Write down what you have observed
and discovered The goal of Bible study is application to your life, not just interpretation. Schedule a longer period of time for study that is separate from your devotions. (Your devotions are to enjoy the presence of God and fellowship with Him). Get the right tools. Pray before each study.

The Devotional Method of Bible Study

The goal of a devotional study is to take a passage of Scripture and to prayerfully meditate on it until the Holy Spirit shows you a way to make application to your life thats personal, as well as practical. This involves 4 steps: (Use a notebook to help you keep track of what you are learning). 1. Pray for insight on how to apply the passage. Ask God to help you apply the Scripture you are studying and show you specifically what He wants you to do.

Open my eyes that I might observe wonderful things in Your law. Psalm 119:18
*Note: The average American finds time to watch 4 hours of TV each day! Yet few have time to devote to Bible study.

34 2. Meditate on the verse(s) you have chosen to study. Think about the passage. You can paraphrase it by putting it in your own words or personalize it by putting your name in place of the pronouns or nouns used. Use the S-P-A-C-E-PE-T-S acrostic to help you with your meditation. The following are good passages to begin a devotional study with: Psalm 15 Psalm 34 Romans 12 1 Thessalonians 5:12-22 1 John 4

Since God gave me my life, surely I can trust Him to sustain it. I can learn from the example of birds: they dont worry about the future. God takes care of them on a daily basis. And If God takes care of birds, of course He will take care of me! Besides, worrying never does me any good. It never really changes the situation. So whats the use of worrying? None! Command to obey: Dont worry! V. 22 Promise to claim: God will take care of me! V. 24 3. Application: I need to apply this lesson in the area of our family finances. For this next month (Ill take it one month at a time) every time the devil tempts me to worry about our bills, Ill resist that thought by quoting Luke 12:24 aloud. 4. Memorization:

Am I willing to work on a negative attitude and begin building a positive one? Am I willing to do it no matter how I

Command to obey? Example to follow? Prayer to pray? Error to avoid?

Is it a positive example for me to emulate or a negative one to avoid? Is there anything I need to pray to God? Is there any problem that I should be alert to or beware of? What new things can I learn about God the Father, Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit, or other biblical teachings? Is there something here that I can be thankful for?

Truth to believe?

Something to praise God for?

Use the method that best fits what you are studying or a combination of them. 3. Write out an application. Writing down your insights and your application helps you to be specific and also keeps you from forgetting what you have learned. Make your application personal and practical. . . something you can do. Example: I need to spend at least 15 minutes each day in prayer and fellowship with God before I leave for work in the morning. You can write down applications that may not apply to you at the present, but may be helpful in ministering to someone else later on. 4. Memorize a key verse from your study. (The memorization and meditation system can be helpful with this.) The memorized verse will help in the renewing of our mind, which is part of the transformation process. Ultimately, the goal of our study is to become more like Jesus.

Consider the ravens: They do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn; yet God feeds them. And how much more valuable you are than birds! Luke 12:24
*This verse could also be put on the memorization and meditation sheet for that week.

The Inductive Method of Bible Study

Based on How to Study Your Bible by Kay Arthur Begin with prayer. Open my eyes so that I might observe wonderful things from your law. Psalm 119:18 Inductive Bible study consists of three parts: observation, interpretation, and application.
Why was there a need for this to be written?

Why was this mentioned? Why was so much or so little space devoted to this particular event or teaching? Why was this reference mentioned? Why should they do such and such? truth illustrated?

Observation

Observation answers the question: What does the passage say? Steps to insightful observation: 1. Look at the context. In Bible study, context is the word, phrase, or sentence surrounding a particular word, phrase, or sentence. Context rules interpretation, so it is important to view any verse in light of the context of the passage. 2. Observe the obvious. These might be repeated words, or phrases, people events or places. 3. Deal with the text objectively. In other words, let the text speak for itself. (We will personalize the scripture later. . .) 4. Read with a purpose. Ask the 5 Ws and an H.

When you ask the 5 Ws and an H of the text, and you let the text provide the answers, youll be amazed at what you learn. These questions lay a solid foundation for accurate interpretation. If you rush into interpretation without laying the vital foundation of observation, your understanding becomes colored by your own presuppositionsWhat you think, what you feel, or what other people have said. 5. Mark key words and phrases. Key word are words that are vital to understanding the meaning of the text. These words may be repeated in the text. Every key word is a who, what, when, where, why, or how word. 6. Look for contrasts, comparisons, conclusions, and expressions of time.

This helps you to study all of the pages in the Bible where a particular subject is taught. You can use a concordance or the cross-references in the margin of your Bible. 9. Understand the when, where, and why. Look up the circumstances that prompted the books writing and the setting in which it was written. This can be pivotal in interpreting the text properly.

Interpretation answers the question, What does this mean? Steps to good interpretation 1. Remember that context rules. Interpreting a word, a verse or a passage must always be considered in light of the surrounding verses and chapters the book in which it is found the entire word of God Your interpretation should be consistent with other Scripture, the theme and purpose of the book in which it is found and the historical and cultural context of what is being said. Never take Scripture out of context! 2. Remember that Scripture will never contradict Scripture. 3. Do not base your doctrine on an obscure passage of Scripture, but on clear repeated teachings. 4. Interpret Scripture literally. Take the Word of God at face value, in its natural normal sense. 5. Look at the authors intended meaning of the passage. Try to understand what the author had in mind when you interpret a portion of the Bible. Let the passage speak for itself. 6. Check your conclusions by using reliable commentaries. 7. Use a concordance to do word studies on the Greek or Hebrew meaning of a key word.
How to use the concordance:

Application Application answers the question, How does this apply to me? Application flows out of thorough observation and correct interpretation. No matter how much you know about Gods Word, if you dont apply what you learn, Scripture will never benefit your life.

What is Gods instruction to you as His child?

Are there any new truths to be believed? Are there any new commandments to be acted Are there any new insights you are to pursue? Are there any promises you are to embrace?

upon?

Beware of:
Applying cultural standards rather than biblical standards. Attempting to strengthen a legitimate truth by using a Scripture incorrectly. Applying Scripture out of prejudice from past training or teaching. Ultimately the goal of personal Bible study is a transformed life and a deep and abiding relationship with Jesus Christ. Through it you are changed from glory to glory into the image of Jesus!!

a. Look up the English word in the concordance, find the Scripture reference where that word is used, then find the number code. b. Turn to the back of the concordance to the Greek or Hebrew dictionary, depending on whether you are studying a passage from the New or Old Testament (Hebrew for the O.T. and Greek for the N.T).

The Case for Christ

What makes Jesus different?
How is Jesus different from other religious leaders? Why don't the names of Buddha, Mohammed, or Confucius offend people? The reason is that these others didn't claim to be God, but Jesus did. That is what distinguishes him from other religious leaders. The name Jesus Christ is a name and a title. Jesus comes from the Greek form of "Jeshua" which means "the Lord saves." Christ is the Greek word for Messiah, which means "anointed one." The New Testament clearly presents Jesus Christ as God by attributing characteristics to Him that can be true only of God: self existence John 1:4, 14:6 omnipresence Matthew 28:20, 18:20 omniscience John 4:16, 6:64, Luke 4:39, 7:14-15 Matthew 8:26-27 possession of eternal life 1John 5:11,12,20 John 1:4

Lord, Liar or Lunatic?

The distinct claims of Jesus to be God invalidate the stance of skeptics who regard Jesus as a good moral man or a prophet who said a lot of profound things. C.S. Lewis, a former professor at Cambridge University and once an agnostic, wrote this: I am trying here to prevent anyone saying the really foolish thing that people often say about Him: Im ready to accept Jesus as a great moral teacher, but I dont accept His claim to be God. That is the one thing we must not say. A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunaticon the level with the man who says he is a poached eggor else he would be the Devil of Hell. You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the son of God: or else a madman or something worse. You can shut Him up for a fool, you can spit at Him and kill Him as a demon; or you can fall at His feet and call Him Lord and God. But let us not come up with any patronizing nonsense about His being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to.

Many people testified that Jesus was God:

Peter Matthew 16:16 Stephen Acts 7:59 John the Baptist Luke 3:22 Martha John 11:27 Nathaniel John 1:49 Thomas John 20:26-29

Defying the Odds: The Fulfillment of Old Testament Prophecies by Jesus

The Old Testament contains at least sixty major prophesies concerning the Messiah. Every major event in the life of the Messiah was prophesied at least 400 years before His birth. He would be a descendent of Jesse Isaiah 11:1-2 (Luke 1:1-16 lists the genealogy of Jesus) He would be born in Bethlehem Micah 5:2 He would be born of a virgin Isaiah 7:14 He would bind up the brokenhearted and proclaim liberty to captives Isaiah 61:1-2 He would die for the sins of mankind Isaiah 53 He would be betrayed for thirty pieces of silver Zechariah 11:12-13 He would be crucified. Psalm 22:1-18 describes a form of death unknown to the people of the time period in which it was written. The Romans invented crucifixion hundreds of years later. He would rise from the dead on the third day Hosea 6:1-2 The odds of one man fulfilling all of these prophesies has been calculated at 1 in 100,000,000,000,000,000. (See the resource section for source of quotes and information)

Jesus himself said that he was God:

At his trial, the high priest stood up and questioned Jesus, saying, . . .What is it that these men are t e s t i n g against

you? ....Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?" And Jesus said, "I am; and you shall see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of power, and coming with the clouds of heaven." Tearing his clothes, the high priest said, "What further need do we have of witnesses? You have heard the blasphemy. . . And they all condemned Him to be deserving of death. Mark 14:60-64

The religious leaders knew exactly who Jesus was claiming to be, which is why they condemned Him. Blasphemy, under Jewish law, was punishable by death. Jesus' trial was unique. In most trials people are tried for what they have done, but this was not true of Jesus. Jesus was tried for who He was.

46 Reliability of the New Testament It is important to realize the accuracy and reliability of the New Testament. There is tremendous evidence to support dating the completion of New Testament writings within the lifetimes of eyewitnesses of the life of Christ. In addition, there are a large number of manuscripts in existence, the oldest of which is a fragment of the book of John dating from150AD. In all, 24,000 manuscripts from various languages exist of the New Testament. Compare this with the next most documented ancient manuscript, the Iliad, with 650 ancient copies still in existence. In addition, there is better historical documentation for Jesus than for the founder of any other ancient religion: Buddha lived in the 6th century BC but his teachings were not written down until the first century. Mohammed lived from 570 to 632AD, but his biography was not written until 767AD. Evidence for the Resurrection The resurrection is one of the most compelling pieces of evidence for Jesus' claims to be God. Where many religions have a grave to mark the resting place of its founder, Christianity has no grave. In fact, the resurrection is the pivotal event that marks Christ's victory over sin and death, the very basis of Christianity. Based on biblical records and historical facts we can know this: The body of Jesus was placed in a solid rock tomb. 100 pounds of spices were applied to the cloth wrappings covering His body. A Roman seal was placed on the tomb, which was closed with a large rock. To break a Roman seal meant automatic crucifixion upside down. Roman guards were posted by the tomb. To leave your post or allow escape meant death for the Roman guard. Extra caution was taken with the tomb of Jesus because of reported claims by Him that He would rise from death. Despite all of this: The Roman seal was broken and the guards fled their posts. The large stone was not just moved from the entrance of the tomb, but from the entire massive sepulchre. The grave clothes lay undisturbed, except that the body was no longer inside them. No body was ever found, even though the production of a corpse would have meant the immediate stop of Christianity, a result that would have greatly benefited both the Jewish leadership and the Roman government. Who would Die for a Lie? A popular theory suggested that the disciples themselves came and stole the body of Jesus, however the account of their lives immediately following the crucifixion would eliminate this as a possibility. The Bible records a group of depressed and demoralized men who hid themselves and even (in Peter's case) denied having any connection with Jesus. This hardly describes a group of men that could steal a body and then spread the story throughout the known world. What is more telling is the amazing transformation that took place in the lives of the apostles after the resurrection is reported to have taken place. After the resurrection these same men began to preach the resurrection of Jesus boldly, traveling throughout the known world to tell the news. Of the twelve apostles, eleven died martyrs deaths on the basis of two things: their belief in the resurrection of Christ and in Jesus as the Son of God. Historically, this is the fate of the twelve: Peter- crucified Andrew- crucified Matthew- the sword John- natural death, but is recorded as having been boiled in oil for his faith and survived. James, son of Alphaeus- crucified Philip-crucified Simon-crucified Thaddaeus-killed by arrows James, brother of Jesus- stoned Thomas- spear thrust Bartholomew- crucified James, son of Zebedee- the sword The apostles could not have faced both torture and death unless they were fully convinced of both the resurrection and in Jesus Christ being the Son of God. Your Conclusion? This is the most important decision that you will ever face; Is Jesus who He claimed to be and did He die for your sins? Is He a liar, a lunatic or Lord? If He is Lord, then the significance of your decision is enormous. Take time to research this issue using the following resources. Additional Resources

Section Two: Ministry Training

The Importance of Discipleship

Definition of disciple
The Greek word for disciple is mathetes which means one who learns by use and practice. A more complete definition would be: A person-in-process who is eager to learn and apply the truths that Jesus Christ teaches him, which will result in everdeepening commitments to a Christ-like lifestyle. dropped what they were doing and followed Jesus. There was a spiritual hunger in them that Jesus recognized and embraced. This is what we need to look for when we invest our time and energy in discipling others. Jesus had the capacity to see beyond the outward flaws of an individual, seeing them as God created them to be. For instance, Jesus immediately changed Peters name from Simon to Peter, which means rock (John 1:42). At that time Peter was impulsive and unstable. . .anything but a rock. However, Jesus saw Peter as God saw him, and it is that same capacity that God imparts to us as we disciple others.

Why is discipleship important?

Discipleship was Jesus method for reaching the world. Over the course of His three year ministry, the BULK of His time was spent with twelve men that He carefully selected. Although He preached to the multitudes, His focus was on training up these twelve men in godliness. Of these twelve, He was particularly close with three: Peter, James, and John. In Matthew 28:18-20 Jesus gives His final instructions to His followers:

The world-wide strategy of discipleship

Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.
Notice that Jesus did not command them to make converts. He specifically uses the word disciple. God wants us to do much more that just receive salvation. . His desire is for us to have a growing and dynamic faith (Colossians 2:6-7) that we can impart to others.

2 Timothy 2:2 states: The things which you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses, these entrust to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also. Here we see a chain of discipleship beginning with Paul, who discipled Timothy, who in turn discipled faithful men, who taught others also.
The world-wide scope of a discipleship multiplication ministry can be seen when compared with a ministry of addition.

Addition: If you saw 1000 converts a day for a year come

to Christ (these people made a commitment to Christ, but never learned discipleship) at the end of a year you would have 365,000 converts.

Qualifications for a disciple

Jesus took great care in selecting His disciples. Luke 6:12 states that He went off to the mountain to pray and that He spent the whole night in prayer before selecting those He would work with. They were a varied group and it is notable that they were not the most influential, well-educated, or wealthy individuals of that time. What they did have in common, however, were three main characteristics: Faithfulness Availability Teachability Yes, they were FAT. In every instance they immediately

Multiplication: In contrast, if you invested your time and

energy into three men for a year who at the end of the year were multiplying disciples and each of them went out and discipled three men, at the end of 21 years, you would have reached the entire world with the gospel. THAT is the power of multiplication and why Jesus devoted His time and energy to a handful of FAT men.

How do I disciple people?

First of all, pray about WHO God wants you to work with. He never commands us to do something and not give us the capacity to do it. He is faithful, and will make it clear. If we look at the example of Jesus, He taught His men, took them with Him to do ministry, prayed for them, ate with them, hung out with them. . . etc. Above all, He

48 modeled a godly lifestyle. To disciple someone is to pray for them, love them, and teach them the Word of God. It is much simpler than we make it. It is letting them see our lives (even when we fail) and loving them through the issues in their lives. It can involve training them, but our prayers, love, and availability to be used of God is what is CRUCIAL. There is no formula; it is mainly being sensitive to the Spirit.

49

Four Tools of Developing

1. A personal vision for his life. Ask the Lord about this. (Remember Jesus vision for Peter in John 1:42.) Why do you believe in him? How do you see God using this person? What are his personal strengths? Areas for development? Share with him what God has revealed to you. . .this can develop a real sense of purpose and hope in discipleship. 2. Prayer Pray for and with this person. Pray the word of God into their lives. Ephesians 1:18 and Colossians 1:9-12 are wonderful examples of Paul praying into the lives of the people he ministered to. 3. The Word Share with them what you are learning from the Lord. If there are particular areas they are struggling with, help them to find verses that will help them through that situation. It is important that they have a foundational knowledge of the Bible (see the follow-up material). Encourage the Bible memory and meditation system. . . this can be life changing. 4. Training Bring them along to classes, ministry opportunities, functions in the church, speakers, etc. Go over training in the discipleship manual.

Keep confidentiality. What is shared during your personal

time should remain there. They should be able to trust that you are not going to share their personal issues with your spouse, friends, etc.

If you dont know the answer to a spiritual question just

admit, I dont know. Then offer to help them find the answer together.

Be sensitive to the Lord for the length of time that you will
be meeting with that individual. It may be a short season (several months) or a longer time period (a year or more). Be prepared to release that person at the proper time to pursue ministry, yet maintain the friendship that you have developed.

Having a discipleship relationship is not an exact science.

It will vary from person to person. The key ingredient is prayer and reliance on the Holy Spirit for wisdom and direction. Recommended reading: The Master Plan of Evangelism Personal Disciple-Making

Robert E. Coleman Christopher B. Adsit

Hints for your Discipleship Time: Pursue God. The best thing you can do in impacting
others is to walk with God yourself, depending on Him for what you teach and share. He will give you ideas and direction for your time of discipleship. Modeling through your life will speak louder than anything you say. Dont feel as though you have to be super spiritual. Let them see your life and how you deal with difficulty, as well as personal failure. (Lets face it, you will fail at times and so will they. . .)

Be careful to relate to them with an attitude of humility

and love. Although they may ask you for spiritual guidance, they may not take it. Your prayers for them are critical as they make decisions and seek to pursue God.

Section Two: Ministry Training

How to Share Your Faith

1. PRAY for the hearts of non-believers. And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing, in whose case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelieving that they might not see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. 2 Corinthians 4:4 We need to see the spiritual nature of the battle for mens souls and not just focus on how eloquent our gospel presentation is (although it does help to have a clear presentation). 2. Let Jesus speak through you. Ask the Lord for opportunities to discuss the gospel with the non-Christians around you. and my message and my preaching were not in persuasive words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power. 2 Corinthians 2:4
John 1:12 To those who receive Him

He gave the right to become children of God.

(Sample) Prayer: Lord Jesus, I want to know you personally. Thank you for dying on the cross for my sins. I open the door of my life and receive You as my Savior and Lord. Thank you for forgiving my sins and giving me eternal life. Take control of my life. Make me the kind of person You want me to be.

Romans Road

(another gospel presentation option using just the book of Romans)

Questions to ask:

To find out where a person is spiritually, you might ask these questions: 1. If you were to die tonight do you think you would spend eternity in heaven? 2. If you died tonight and God asked you, Why should I let you into heaven? what would you say?

1. Romans 3:23 For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God 2. Romans 6:23a For the wages of sin is death 3. Romans 5:8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. 4. Romans 10:9-10 If you confess with your mouth and believe in your heart

Illustrations to Help Make the Gospel Clear

Basic Gospel Message

The basic gospel message can be broken down into 4 points: 1. God loves us and wants a relationship with us. John 3:16 2. There is a problem: SIN separates us from God Romans 3:23 We have ALL sinned and fallen short of Gods glory Romans 6:23 The cost of sin is death (separation from God) 3. The solution: Jesus paid the price of sin for us on the cross. Romans 5:8 Jesus died for our sins 4. The application: We must receive Christ as our Savior

Sin and Missing the Mark The Greek term sin is an archers term which means to miss the mark--- the mark of Gods perfect standard. (You can draw an archery target with a bulls-eye in the middle illustrating Gods perfection. We may try to be good people, but we can never be perfect like God). Judge I violate the law and get caught. After being arrested, I go to court and am found guilty. Sentence from the Judge is: 30 days in jail or X amount of money and I have NO money. You are faced with jail. But, suppose the Judge is also your father and he loves you. Justice must be maintained, so he cannot ignore the penalty. So he decides to pay the fine for you. He maintains both justice and love. Thats what God did through Jesus Christ. Christ took our place on the cross. Pen (to illustrate the need to accept Jesus as Savior) You could say, Suppose I were to give you this pen. Offer it to them. Ask him, When would it become yours.when I offer it? No, it is yours only if you reach out and take the gift. We need to accept the gift that Jesus offers us.

WALK ACROSS THE ROOM AIDES Additional Evangelistic Resources

1 Peter 3:15,"Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect,"
Here are a few different illustrations that may help to share God's story with others in a clear, concise, and loving manner.

little bit about Mother Theresa. "Mother Teresa," say, "would probably qualify for a rung about three-fourths of the way up. And just as a guess, Billy Graham probably falls right below her. "Here's my only question: What is your plan to make up your gap? "Mother Teresa and Billy Graham had a plan for closing the gap between their level of morality and God's standard of perfection. It's the cross of Jesus Christ. So what is your plan? If you believe that you can rise to the standard of God's holiness on a self-improvement program, you will waste the rest of your life in spin cycle. Real freedom is found when you ditch your man-made plans and choose instead to accept the work that Jesus did on the cross. You can be forgiven. You can live an abundant life. Your morality gap can be closed once and for all by choos-ing faith in Christ."
GOD

DO VS. DONE

DO
DONE

Draw a line across a napkin or legal sheet, and write DO above the line. Religions will give you different lists of things that you have to do to get right with God and earn His favor. Some people abandon all religions and simply make up their own personal lists of what makes up a good and moral life. The problem with any list of do's is that no one can ever tell you when you've done enough to have peace with God, to be forgiven, to gain entrance to heaven. The breakthrough revelation in Christianity is summed up in the word DONE. (Write this below the line that you have drawn.) Jesus did what we could not do for ourselves-he lived a perfect, sinless life. Then he offered himself up as our substitute and paid the penalty for our sins with his own life on a cross. The doing is done. The Bible says that Jesus died, once for all. On the cross he called out 'it is finished'. Jesus met all of God's requirements. Because of what Christ did on the cross, your sins can be forgiven, and God offers us the free gift of eternal life. Jesus has DONE what we could not do. Now, all we have to do is believe and receive Jesus into our lives by faith and you can find favor in God's eyes right here, right now. Jesus met all of God's requirements for you. Do you understand that?

KILLERS

THE BRIDGE
The Bridge to Life is a simple, but powerful way to illustrate God's story. You start by drawing a few lines on a napkin or legal pad. You write God on the right, and draw a stick figure on the left. You explain that all of mankind is in the same quandary. Because of our mistakes and failures, things the Bible calls sin, we can't think of God without a little self-doubt, even fear. We know that we've fallen short of God's hopes and instructions for our lives. There is a chasm, a gulf between us. It's no different in human relationships: when we break promises, lie to the people we love, hurt the men and women around us, these breakdowns create some tension and distance between us. Religion is mankind's attempt, in different ways, to bridge the chasm between us and God-to make good on the wrong we have done. The problem with all religions is that no one

THE MORALITY LADDER

Draw a ladder, and write God at the top. Envision morality as escalating rungs on a ladder. God sits at the top of the ladder because he is holy-he's perfectly moral. And of course, really evil people are at the bottom-mass murderers and the like. The rest of humanity is somewhere in between. Ask, where would you put yourself on this ladder? Near the top, close to God? Probably not at the bottom; I know you to be a good person. Before you put an 'x' on the ladder to represent your own sense of moral standing, let me tell you a

53 follows his or her religion perfectly, so all religious attempts to draw close to God are doomed to failure. But thankfully, God sympathized with our dilemma. And because he loved us so much, he intervened so that we would have a means of getting close to him. His solution was to choose his Son, Jesus, to serve as the bridge. Jesus came into the world and through his death on a cross, paid the penalty for all our sins. Now, by God's grace-not our self-improvement programs-anyone can choose, in faith, to step across into a personal relationship with God. Jesus' death and resurrection makes an intimate relationship with God possible. That's the good news. You don't have to build the bridge. All you have to do is decide to begin the faith journey. If you feel the Holy Spirit leading you, you could also ask the person to place themselves on the illustration as an indicator as to their spiritual condition. By doing this, you will be better be able to know what resources to give them (if the opportunity arises) and how to pray for them. Here are some Before-and-After examples: "For years, I felt empty. I had a hole that I needed to fill, so I searched for things that could fill that hole: a new house; children, new friends, clothes, a new job.... My emptiness would be filled for a short time, but I never found the 'it' that kept the hole filled. One day I heard a message about having a relationship with Jesus. Once I understood, accepted, and grew in my relationship with him, my emptiness was finally filled--for good. Today, I am no longer searching for things to fill my life." "I used to look for acceptance. I used drugs and alcohol to make me feel like I was somebody. I thought God had put me here as a cruel joke. But then l met Christ. He got me off of drugs, off of alcohol, and he made me feel worthwhile. I now know what happiness is actually like. The void in my heart is gone. I now know I have many reasons for being here ... one is to share my story to give others hope. My days are no longer miserable; life actually means something to me now." "My life was filled with shame and fear. I was all tied up inside and isolated. Loneliness led me to a place of hopelessness. But then I met Jesus. Now I am free from my self-inflicted prison of fear and shame. I am forgiven and loved!

THE BEFORE-AND-AFTER PATTERN

The promise of the gospel's transforming power is that when you come to Christ, your old self is evicted (BEFORE) and a new self arrives (AFTER). When you tell your story, the critical contrast to draw for someone is this: What difference has Christ really made in your life? In other words, what were you like before Christ, and now what are you like after you've asked Christ to intervene? While writing your beforeand-after story, try to be brief (100 words or less), clear (one main plot line), simple (don't use "religious" words), and humble (told in a loving manner).

Would You Like to Know God Personally?

God Loves you and created you to know Him personally.

The following four principles will help you discover how to know God personally and experience the abundant life He promised. The Four Spiritual Laws by Bill Bright, New Life Publication

Jesus Christ is Gods only provision for mans sin. Through Him alone we can know god personally and experience Gods love.

Gods Love "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. (John 3:16) Gods Plan Now this is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent. (John 17:3)
What prevents us from knowing God personally?

He Died In Our Place But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. (Romans 5:8) He Rose from the Dead For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, and that he appeared to Peter, and then to the Twelve. After that, he appeared to more than five hundred of the brothers at the same time, most of whom are still living, though some have fallen asleep. (1 Corinthians 15:3-6) He Is the Only Way to God Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. (John 14:6)
This diagram illustrates that God has bridged the gulf that separates us from Him by sending His Son, Jesus Christ, to die on the cross in our place to pay the penalty for our sins.

Man is sinful and separated from God, so we cannot know Him personally or experience His love.

Man Is Sinful All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. (Romans 3:23)
Man was created to have fellowship with God; but, because of his own stubborn self-will, he chose to go his own independent way and fellowship with god was broken. This selfwill, characterized by an attitude of active rebellion or passive indifference, is an evidence of what the Bible calls sin.

It is not enough just to know these truths...

Man Is Separated For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 6:23)
This diagram illustrates that God is holy and man is sinful. A great gulf separates the two. The arrows illustrate that man is continually trying to reach God and establish personal relationship with Him through our own efforts, such as a good life, philosophy, or religionbut he inevitably fails.

We must individually receive Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord; then we can know God personally and experience His love.

We Must Receive Christ Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God. (John 1:12) We Receive Christ Through Faith For it is by grace you have been saved, through faithand this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God not by works, so that no one can boast. (Ephesians 2:8-9) When we Receive Christ, We Experience a New Birth (Read John 3:1-8)

The third principle explains the only way to bridge this gulf...

56

We Receive Christ By Personal Invitation

Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me. (Revelation 3:20)
Receiving Christ involves turning to God from self (repentance) and trusting Christ to come into our lives to forgive us of our sins and to make us what He wants us to be. Just to agree intellectually that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and that He died on the cross for our sins is not enough. Nor is it enough to have an emotional experience. We receive Jesus Christ by faith, as an act of our will These two circles represent two kinds of lives:

The Bible Promises Eternal Life to All Who Receive Christ

And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life. I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life. (1 John 5:11-13) Thank God often that Christ is in your life and that He will never leave you (Hebrews 13:5) You can know on the basis of His promise that Christ lives in you and that you can have eternal life from the very moment you invite Him in. He will not deceive you.

An important reminder Do Not Depend on Feelings

The promise of Gods Word, the Biblenot our feelingsis our authority. The Christian lives by faith (trust) in the trustworthiness of god Himself and His Word. This train diagram illustrates the relationship among fact (God and His Word), faith (our trust in God and His Word), and felling (the result of our faith and obedience). (John 14:21)

S-Self is on the throne - Christ is outside the life -Interests are directed by self, often resulting in discord and frustration.

- Christ is in the life and on the throne. S-Self is yielding to Christ -Interests are directed by Christ, resulting in harmony with Gods plan.

Which circle best represents your life? Which circle would you like to have represent your life?

The train will run with or without the caboose. However, it would be useless to attempt to pull the train by the caboose. In the same way, we as Christians do not depend on feelings or emotions, but we place our faith (trust) in the trustworthiness of God and the promises of His Word.

The following explains how you can receive Christ.

You Can Receive Christ Right Now By Faith Through Prayer (Prayer is talking with God) God knows your heart and is not so concerned with your words as He is with the attitude of your heart. The following is a suggested prayer:

Now That You Have Entered Into a Personal Relationship With Christ
The moment you received Christ by faith, as an act of your will, many things happened, including the following: 1. Christ came into your life (Revelation 3:20; Colossians 1:27). 2. 3. 4. 5. Your sins were forgiven (Colossians 1:14). You became a child of god (John 1:12). You received eternal life (John 5:24). You began the great adventure for which god created you (John 10:10; 2 Corinthians 5;17; 1 Thessalonians 5:18).

Lord Jesus, I want to know You personally. Thank You for dying on the cross for my sins. I open the door of my life and receive You as my Savior and Lord. Thank You for forgiving me of my sins and giving me eternal life. Take control of the throne of my life. Make me the kind of person You want me to be.
Does this prayer express the desire of your heart? If it does, pray this prayer right now, and Christ will come into your life, as He promised.

How to Know That Christ Is in Your Life

Did you receive Christ into your life? According to His promise in Revelation 3:20, where is Christ right now in relationship to you? Christ said that He would come into your life and be your friend so you can know him personally. Would He mislead you? On what authority do you know that God has answered your prayer? (The trustworthiness of God Himself and His Word.)

Can you think of anything more wonderful that could happen to you than entering into a personal relationship with Jesus Christ? Would you like to thank God in prayer right now for what He has done for you? By thanking God, you demonstrate your faith.

57

To enjoy your new relationship with God Suggestions for Christian Growth
Spiritual growth results from trusting Jesus Christ. Clearly no one is justified before God by the law, because, "The righteous will live by faith." (Galatians 3:11). A life of faith will enable you to trust god increasingly with every detail of your life, and to practice the following: Go to God in prayer daily (John 15:7) Read Gods Word daily (Acts 17:11)begin with the Gospel of John Obey God moment by moment (John 14:21) Witness for Christ by your life and words (Matthew 4:19; John 15:8) Trust God with every detail of your life (1 Peter 5:7). Holy SpiritAllow Him to control and empower your daily life and witness (Galatians 5:16; Acts 1:18)

How to Write Your Personal Testimony

Material taken from Campus Crusade for Christ Training Manual A personal testimony can be a very effective way of communicating the gospel to someone else. Other people can argue about opinions and theology, but they cannot argue the power of a transformed life. What to do Ask God to give you wisdom Keep to a 3-5 minute limit Be realistic, dont exaggerate Include a clear presentation of the gospel What not to do Make statements that reflect negatively on any church, organization or individual Mention denominations or church names Speak or write in a preachy manner Use vague terms like joyful, peaceful, or changed without explaining them Avoid religious terms like saved, convicted, or sin unless you explain them Writing Style Try to begin with an attention-getting sentence or incident. Be positive, accurate and specific- details arouse interest. Use Bible verses directly related to your experience. Delete references, for example, say, One of Jesus disciples said. . . rather than writing, 1 John 5:11-13 says. . . Write a logical conclusion. Write things just as you would say it to someone in person. Such as, Before I received Christ as my savior, my attitude was. . . A testimony contains three parts: my life before I received Christ, how I received Christ, and what happened after I received Christ. It is not necessary to go into extreme detail. Effective communication is usually brief, to the point, and clear. In fact, orally explaining your testimony should not take more than 3 or 4 minutes.

Writing the Testimony

1. Before I received Christ. . . My life revolved around, and I gained happiness and security from. . . Use an example from your personal life. Did your security come from money, relationships, success? How did this disappoint me? How did you come to realize that this was unfulfilling? What were you struggling with? 2. How I received Christ. . . This is where you come to the transition in your life, where Gods work begins to become evident to you. When and how did you receive Christ (or rededicate your life to Christ)? Include a brief gospel message. 3. Since I received Christ. . . An effective testimony focuses not on our sin, but on the work of the Holy Spirit in us, so that Jesus Christ is at the forefront of the presentation. It is at this point that your testimony should begin to shine. How has my life changed, and when did I notice that change? How am I motivated differently now? As you review you testimony ask yourself: Does this read like a story? Is it disjointed? Does it make sense? Can I read this out loud in 3 to 4 minutes? Have I exaggerated? Did I give the Lord enough credit for the change in my life?

60

Personal Testimony (example)

Life before Christ If I could describe with one word the picture of God that I had growing up it would be distant. I pictured God as someone far off on some distant planet that was far too busy with running the Universe to be concerned about me. I lived my life pretty much as if God didn't exist. By the time I went to college I would have classified myself as an agnostic-I thought God was out there somewhere but there was no way of knowing Him. Then I met a girl on my dorm floor who really stood out to me. She was a lot of fun but she didn't come to the bars with us or get caught up with the wild lifestyle. She and I had most of our classes together and we had some long conversations while we walked across campus. For the first time in my life I met someone who told me that God wasn't the distant guy I'd thought He was. In fact, she told me that God wanted a personal relationship with me. How I received Christ This friend explained that the reason that I had felt so distant from God was because of a problem that every person has called sin. The word sin is an archery term that means "missing the mark." If God's righteousness is like the perfect bull's-eye, then we all miss the mark of perfection through our bad attitudes and behavior. She then told me that the Bible said that the consequence for sin is death, which is spiritual separation from God. Someone pays the price for sin- either we pay it or someone else (someone sinless) can pay it for us. Jesus, who was God in human form, came and died for the sins of the world. He offers that sin payment to us as a gift...but like all gifts it needs to be received for it to become ours. While I was at school I decided that I wanted to receive that gift of forgiveness so I could have eternal life and know God. I prayed a simple prayer and asked God to forgive me of my sins and to have a personal relationship. Since I received Christ After I prayed I saw some immediate changes in my life. For the first time, God did not seem like a distant alien to me. My relationships with other people become better as I became more secure of who I was. I no longer felt the need to fill the emptiness in my life with the wild stuff that I had been doing previously. Also, I had gifts and talents that I had been too scared and insecure to do, but after I began a relationship with God I found myself stepping out and trying new things like leadership and speaking. It's been 30 years since I prayed that prayer and God I no longer see God as distant... in fact, He's one of my closest friends.

How to do Personal Follow-Up with a New Believer

The Need for Personal Follow-up When someone becomes a Christian, it is vital that they be taken through personal follow-up. Matthew 28:19-20 is clear when Jesus tells His followers: In addition, because of the increasingly secular nature of our culture, schools, and society in general, many people are unaware of the Bible, what it says, what a Christian is, etc. What might be basic to you can be revolutionary to someone else. What to Do With a New Christian Try and meet regularly for around 8 weeks (if possible) Pray for them regularly (this is a must) Bring them to church with you and explain the importance of regular fellowship Encourage them to attend a Baptism Class and be baptized Encourage them to attend Vineyard 101 Get them involved in a Bible study or a Wednesday night class Hang out with them and introduce them to your Christian friends Make Sure They Have a Bible Make sure the new Christian has a Bible with a good, readable translation. Many people find the King James Translation difficult to understand. The New American Standard or New International Version of the Bible are commonly used translations that are easier to read. You can also do some basic explanation of the structure of the Bible Book Chart. (See the Bible Chart on page 41) Jesus Never Told us to Make Converts Remember that the goal is for a new Christian (convert) to become a disciple, and to eventually do what you are doing, which is to multiply his life and teach others about Jesus.

Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.
A disciple is a follower and student of Jesus. Just as we instruct our own children in how to live and develop, we need to instruct new Christians in understanding and applying Gods Word. You would never have a baby and leave it to fend for itself saying, Im sure hell be okay. . . hell figure out what he needs to know. It sounds ridiculous, yet many spiritual infants are left on their own without anyone to instruct them on how to live the Christian life. This leads to immature Christians, or to spiritual infants who are unsure as to whether they are Christians at all. Get a Follow-up Appointment When someone does make a profession of faith, it is critical to make a follow-up appointment with them, preferably within 48 hours of receiving Christ. You can go over the salvation message again and answer any questions they might have. The follow-up material provided in this book is foundational truth that is vital for Christians to know. It can easily be covered in less than a half hour and has a Leaders Guide included with supplemental material. DONT ASSUME because the material seems basic to you that they know it already. Many Christians are unaware of basic truths that would help them to grow in their relationship with Christ. The enemy loves this because he can keep us spiritual infants, rather than multiplying disciples.

A pupil is not above his teacher; but everyone, after he has been fully trained, will be like his teacher. Luke 6:40

How Can I Be Sure?

1 John 5:11-13 And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life. 13I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.
11

1. According to this verse, what is the basis for having eternal life? 2. Verse 13 says, in order that you may know that you have eternal life. Can we really be sure? Why or why not?

So many people get hung up on the bad things they have done or on not being good enough.
These are man-made religious concepts. God does not sit on His throne looking at the scales that weigh your good deeds versus your bad deeds. Romans 3:23 says, all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. The problem isnt that weve done too many bad things or not enough good deeds, the problem is that we have sinned. That is what separated us from God. Romans 6:23 says, The wages of sin is death. But the good news is that Romans 5:8 says, 8But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. It is not what we do, but what He did for us that gains us eternal life. Look at the second part of Romans 6:23. Here, eternal life is described as a free gift. How do you earn a free gift? How does a free gift actually become yours? (see also John 1:12) 3. How does it make you feel to know that God demonstrated His love for you by having Jesus pay the penalty for your sins?

64

You have been given a priceless gift. The Bible tells us that once we receive Christ as our Savior, we are
to make the public declaration of our faith by being baptized (Acts 2:41, Matthew 28:18-20). Have you been baptized since you put your faith in Christ? Are you ready to take that next step of obedience?

e

1. Look up Ephesians 2:8-10. What role do good works have in the life of a believer in Jesus?

2. Are there any things in your past that are so bad you have feared God could not forgive you? The one we often refer to as Saint Paul or the Apostle Paul also had a past. You can read about it in Acts 7:58-8:3. He was called Saul when he was younger. In Pauls own testimony in 1 Timothy 1:15-16, he called himself unworthy and the chief of sinners. He persecuted the church and killed Christians, yet Paul was forgiven. Everything you have done can be forgiven and has been forgiven if youve received Jesus as your Savior.

3. Explain John 3:16 in your own words.

4.

Does God love you? Look up what Romans 8:32,38,39 says about His love for you.

1. To have eternal life, we must have the Son. In other words, we have to receive Christ as our Savior. 2. We can be sure because it is not based on what we do, but it is based on what Jesus finished work on the cross. Our debt for sin is already paid. 3. A free gift still has to be accepted. I have the option of taking a free gift or not taking it. 4. The answer here will tell you something about where their heart is. Hopefully, they will understand and express appreciation. 5. New believers should take the step of obedience and make a public declaration of their faith. Baptism is a physical and visible demonstration of our identification with Jesus death and resurrection.

1. We are created in Christ Jesus for good works, but they are not for salvation. Works are to reflect the change that has taken place in the heart of a believer in Jesus. 2. Romans 8:1 3. Gods love for us was so great that He was willing to pay the ultimate price for us to spend eternity with Him. He gave His son in our place. 4. Yes, but some people will have an issue with this. If they hedge on their answer, it may be based on bad experiences growing up. Use the listed Scripture to reassure them. Hebrews 13:5 also says, ...because God has said, Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.

Getting to Know Your Heavenly Father

John 17:3 Now this is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.
3

1. According to John 17:3, what is eternal life?

2. What do you think of the idea that you can actually know God?

Knowing God, as opposed to knowing about God, is a different concept for many people. John
1:12 tells us that when we receive Christ, we become children of God. God is not just GOD to us anymore, He is our Father! Romans 8:15 says, 15For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. And by him we cry, Abba, Father. Believe it or not, the term Abba is like our English word Daddy. 3. How does this knowledge affect your thinking about God? What is it like to know that the God of the universe is your Heavenly Dad?

The prophet Jeremiah tells us in Jeremiah 29:12-13,

Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. Are you ready to get to know Him? Your heavenly Father desires a relationship with you. It is up to you to seek Him. He promises that if you do seek Him wholeheartedly you will find Him.
12

68

ow Do I Start? Like any relationship, a relationship with God involves spending time with Him. It also involves
communication. To develop your relationship with God, it is important to set aside time each day to read your Bible and to talk with Him. Psalm 16:11 says, You have made known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand. Ask God to reveal Himself to you as you read. Start with the gospel of John and read a chapter a day. John gives us an intimate picture of Jesus. Then just begin to talk with Him. The promise we read in Jeremiah is that He will listen.

e
s s o n 2

1. How did you view God before you received Jesus as your Savior? Was He approachable or unapproachable? Were you afraid of Him? Did you think He liked you?

2. John 15:7 says, 7If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be given you. What do you think it means to remain in Jesus?

3. Read Psalm 16:11. This verse promises fullness of joy and eternal pleasures. What would it look like for you to experience these? What must you do to experience them?

4. The idea of praying to God intimidates many people. What do you think of talking with your Father instead?

In addition to these individual pursuits, believers in Jesus are told to assemble together.

Hebrews 10:25 tells us not to forsake getting together for fellowship and mutual encouragement. As a result, it is important to make church attendance a priority. There you will be able to participate in corporate worship and praise. Good pastoral preaching from the Bible will also help you to get to know your heavenly Father better.

The key in this lesson is to help new believers see that they can pursue an incredible relationship with the God of the universe, who happens to also be their heavenly Father! However, some people may not have had the best experience with their earthly fathersthey may have had dads who were anything from uninvolved to brutal. Be prepared to reinforce the idea of the Fathers love for us. (1 John 3:1).

Additional Scripture:

Galatians 4:4-7 Jeremiah 9:23-24 John 7:37-38 Romans 5:8 Romans 8:32-39

People often have no concept of God as their heavenly Father. The idea can be very alien to
them. Be patient with comments that reflect old religious attitudes and values, but show them when their feelings differ from the truth of the Scriptures. Use the diagram on the following page to remind them to place their faith in truth and not in feelings, which can be very fickle.

o Not Depend on Feelings The promise of Gods Word, the Bible, is our authority, not our feelings. The Christian lives
by faith (trust) in the trustworthiness of God Himself and His Word. The train diagram illustrates the relationship between fact (God and His Word), faith (our trust in God and His Word), and feeling (the result of our faith and obedience) (John 14:21).

The train will run without the caboose. However, it would be useless to attempt to pull the train

1. To know the Father is eternal life. In John 14:9 Jesus says, ...Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. Knowing Jesus means knowing the Father. Try not to get into the doctrine of the Trinity with this. The key is this: Having eternal life means knowing God and that is only through receiving Jesus. 2. Most people have not thought in this way before. We want them to see this as a relationship instead of being religious. 3. Some people may have father issues. We all tend to see God as being like our earthly father. It is important to stress here that God is a good Father. 4. Ask them if they have a Bible. Get them one if they do not and have them start with a chapter per day in the gospel of John.

e

1. Answers may vary here. Answers that begin with I used to think are fine. Assure them the harsh God they used to think about is not the true God. Using the Bible, show them that God is approachable (Hebrews 4:16), and we do not need to be afraid of Him (1 John 4:1819). 2. To remain in Jesus means to live our life within the context of our relationship with Him. 3. The only way to experience these wonders is to be in His presence. We need to get to know Him. As we experience Him, it truly elevates us to a joy that is inexpressible as 1 Peter 1:8 says. 4. This again reflects the idea of a relationship, not the religious discipline of prayer.

Who Is Jesus?Part 1

Matthew 16:15-16 But what about you? He ( Jesus) asked. Who do you say that I am? Simon Peter answered, You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.

Peter declared that Jesus was the Christ. That is the Greek translation of the Hebrew word
Messiah. The word actually means anointed one, a reference to His being set apart to deliver Gods people. It was also a royal reference. The kings of Israel were always anointed when they became king. The anointing oil was a picture of Gods blessing and of His Spirit resting upon His chosen one.

Long before the birth of Jesus, God gave many signs to enable His people to identify the
promised Messiah. Jesus neither took the title because He wanted it nor was He elected to the position. The Old Testament prophets gave various authenticating things to look for to tell if someone was in fact the Messiah. 1. Look up Micah 5:2. Where was the Messiah to be born? 2. Look up Isaiah 11:1-2. This says that the Messiah was to be a descendent of Jesse. Though Jesse may not be well known, most people have heard of his son, David. Can anyone control where they are born or who they are descended from? Of course not! No one can choose these things, only God can. That is why they were signs that God gave. Luke 1:1-16 lists the genealogy of Jesus (notice verse 6). Who was Jesus a descendent of? 3. In Luke 18:38, a blind man named Bartimaeus cried out to Jesus, Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!. What could this blind man see that many of the rulers couldnt see?

74

4. Isaiah 7:14 says, Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and will call Him Immanuel. (Immanuel was a reference to the Messiahs nature. The name means God is with us.) Many people have heard that Mary was a virgin when she became pregnant, but why do you think it is important that it was predicted by a prophet many years beforehand?

5. Psalm 22: 1-18 says a lot about the crucifixion of the Messiah. Hosea 6:1-2 tells us of the resurrection on the third day. How does it make you feel to know that so many of the key events in the life of Jesus were predicted hundreds of years before He was even born?

e

1. Zechariah 11:12-13 says, 12 I told them, If you think it best, give me my pay; but if not, keep it. So they paid me thirty pieces of silver. 13 And the LORD said to me, Throw it to the potter the handsome price at which they priced me! So I took the thirty pieces of silver and threw them into the house of the LORD to the potter. Who and what does this refer to?

2. Look at Isaiah 61:1-2. What does this prophecy refer to? Compare this with Luke 4:18-20 to help you with the answer.

3. Isaiah 53 is one of the most important chapters in the Old Testament. Read it and describe what was to be the purpose of the Messiahs death.

4. Isaiah 9:6-7 portrays a different picture of the Messiah. What does this passage refer to?

5. Why did God scatter so many clues throughout the Old Testament regarding the Messiah and His purpose for coming ?

75

eaders Guide and Related Resources

e
The key in this lesson is to show the new believer exactly who it is that they have put their trust
in. Jesus IS the Messiah. The Old Testament had much to say prophetically about the coming of the Messiah, and the passages fit Jesus perfectly.

s s o n

1. The Messiah was to be born in Bethlehem. 2. Jesus is a descendent of David. 3. By using the term Son of David, Bartimaeus was identifying Jesus as the Messiah. It was an unmistakable term reserved only for the coming Messiah, and it was certainly a bold declaration of his personal faith in Jesus. 4. God wanted to make sure people understood the Messiahs unique nature. Immanuel means God is with us. Jesus birth was of Divine origin: While Mary was still a virgin, she was impregnated by the Holy Spirit. Though she was accused by ignorant people of having conceived Jesus in sin, as Jesus public ministry unfolded, many realized that her testimony of conceiving while a virgin was true. It is another important proof that Jesus is the Messiah. 5. It gives security. Eye witnesses applied these passages to Jesus, so we have a trustworthy foundation for why we believe in Him.

76

1. Judas and the price he was paid to betray Jesus 2. It refers to the public ministry of Jesus. In Luke, Jesus quotes the passage from Isaiah at the beginning of His ministry. 3. He was to suffer for our iniquities (sins). He paid the price for us. 4. This tells of the coming, reigning King. 5. God gave enough prophetic clues so that people would be able to eliminate those who claimed to be the Messiah who didnt meet the prophetic requirements. The prophecies also referred to things which a person could not control on their own.

Who Is Jesus?Part 2

Matthew 16:15-16 But what about you? He (Jesus) asked. Who do you say that I am? Simon Peter answered, You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.

It is important for Christians to know exactly who it is that they have put their trust in. Many
people have strong opinions as to who Jesus was. But opinions have to have a factual basis for them to be valid. The important thing is not what we say, its what the Bible itself tells us. In the last lesson we saw a clear picture of Jesus in the Old Testament, identifying Him as the Messiah or Christ. This lesson focuses on the second half of Peters confession: the Son of the living God.

Lets look at the New Testament. Romans 1:3-4 talks about the dual nature of Jesus. It makes
it clear that He is both man and God. The humanity of Jesus is seen throughout the gospel accounts. He was born of a woman and grew up among the people of that day. He ate, wept, laughed and got angry.

Beyond being fully a man, Jesus is fully God.

1. Look up John 8:58-59. Jesus said, Before Abraham was born, I Am. The people picked up stones at this point because they understood what Jesus had just said. Look at Exodus 3:13-14. When Moses encountered God and was being told to go back to Egypt to bring the people out of the land, he asked God what His name was. What did God tell him? Now, go back to John 8:59. Why did the people pick up stones to stone Jesus? 2. Look up Philippians 2:5-6. Before Jesus became a man, what was His nature? 3. Who created the heavens and the earth, according to Genesis 1? Now look up Colossians 1:16. Interestingly, here we see that it is God the Son who created the heavens and the earth!

78

4. Jesus was asked by Philip in John 14:8, Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us. Jesus response was, Dont you know Me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen Me has seen the Father. In your own words, what did Jesus say to Philip? 5. Who do you think has ALL authority in heaven and earth? Look at Matt. 28:18.

e
1.Look at Colossians 1:19-2:9. When you put these two verses together, what do they tell you about Jesus?

s s o n 4

2. In John 10:30, Jesus says, I and the Father are one. What does this mean?

3. Hebrews 1:3-4 says, 3The Son is the radiance of God's glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven. 4So he became as much superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is superior to theirs. What does the radiance of Gods glory mean? What does the exact representation of His being mean?

4. In John 20:26-29, the apostle, Thomas, makes the statement which gave him his nickname, The Doubter. When Jesus appears to him, Thomas doubts are erased. What did Thomas call Jesus?

5. Why would the God of the universe leave His throne in heaven, become a man, and die on a cross for you? Think about this: The value of something is determined by what someone is willing to pay for it. What price was God willing to pay just so you could know Him? You must be very special in His eyes!

It really doesnt matter who most people think Jesus is or was. What matters is the Scriptural
basis of their beliefs. Everyone has an opinion, but the key to the validity of the opinion is the reasons undergirding it. The New Testament has a lot to say about the nature of Jesus. He wasnt just a good person who was killed for His principles; He also wasnt just a great teacher or merely a prophet. He and His disciples clearly claimed that He was God Incarnate.

s s o n

1. God identified Himself to Moses as I Am that I Am. Jesus statement Before Abraham was born, I Am, was understood by the people to mean Jesus was claiming to be God. They picked up rocks to stone Him as punishment for blasphemy. They couldnt throw the stones because it wasnt yet Jesus time to die, and He also hadnt blasphemed since it was a true statement. 2. He was by nature God before He became a man. 3. God created the heavens and the earth. Col. 1 tells us more specifically that it was God the Son who created everything. 4. Jesus claimed to be the visible incarnation of the invisible God.

5. Jesus has all authority in heaven and on earth.

80

1. All of the fullness of Gods deity dwelt in Jesus in bodily form. 2. Jesus and the Father are one in purpose and essence.

3. Gods own glory shines through Jesus perfectly. Jesus nature is the same as the Fathers nature. 4. Thomas, upon seeing Jesus after His resurrection said, My Lord and My God. 5. God was willing to pay the highest possible cost for you because of His great love for you.

The Key to Faith

Hebrews 12:1-2 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. 2Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
1

Luke 17:5-6 says, The apostles said to the Lord, Increase our faith! He replied, If you have
5 6

faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mulberry tree, Be uprooted and planted in the sea, and it will obey you. Many people think they need more faith, yet Jesus makes it clear here that a small amount of faith can accomplish much. The important point with faith is not how much you have, but what is your faith in? The object of our faith is what is really important.
1. What does Hebrews 12:2 say we should focus on?

2. Have you ever been disappointed by putting your trust in an untrustworthy object? Would it have made a difference if you had put even more trust in that untrustworthy object?

3. Jesus is trustworthy. When we place our faith in Him, we are placing our faith in the one who is the author and perfecter of our faith. Is Jesus worthy of your trust?

82

Consider the following diagram:

Dock A
300 lb. man Lots of faith ice will hold him, so he jumps 1/16 in. film of ice

Dock B

125 lb. man Little faith ice will hold him, so he gently eases himself down 10 ft. thick ice

The 300 pound man goes swimming. It doesn't matter that he had a lot of faith. His faith was
in an untrustworthy object.

s s o n 5

The 125 pound man stands solidly on the ice. He didnt have much faith, but he had enough to
step out onto the ice. It held him because it was a trustworthy object of his faith, not because of how much faith he had. 4. Look up Matthew 14:22-23. Why could Peter walk on water? Why did he sink? What determines whether you stand or sink in the midst of lifes storms?

1. Hebrews 11:1 tells us what faith is. Give a practical illustration of how this might apply to your life.

2. Hebrews 11:6 says, 6And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him. Remember, the biblical synonym for faith is trust, not just belief. Why is it so important to trust God? What is it that we are trusting Him with?

83

3. Hebrews 11:6 goes on to say that God is a rewarder of those who seek Him. If people seek Him and God promises to reward them, what does He reward them with?

4. Hebrews 12:1 tells us that we have a cloud of witnesses. Read chapter eleven of Hebrews and see who some of these witnesses were. Is there anyone whose faith stands out for you? Why?

5. What or who do you have your faith in? Why?

The purpose of this lesson is to help new believers understand the role of faith in their daily
lives. People still mistakenly get caught up with how much faith they have or dont have. The important issue is whether or not the object of our faith is trustworthyand Jesus is!

s s o n

Page 1 & 2

1. We need to fix our eyes on Jesus. Spending time with Him regularly helps us to keep our focus on the Lord and not on our daily trials. 2. The amount of faith we have is irrelevant when it is placed in an untrustworthy objectlike the film of ice in the diagram. 3. Be prepared if due to the trials of life, a new believer says, Im not sure Jesus is worthy of my trust. Dont be threatened by this. Read John 16:33, Romans 5:1-5 and Matthew 28:20. These verses say that we WILL have tribulation, but the Lord will use it to build character into us, and Jesus promises to always be with us. 4. Peter walked on water when he focused on and trusted in Jesus. When he looked at his circumstances and took his eyes off of Jesus, he sank. Today we still can rise above our trials by fixing our eyes on Jesus.

85

1. Good answers should focus on the assurance we have in Jesus.

2. Like any parent, God is pleased when we trust Him and obey Him. Every commandment in Scripture has a two-fold purposeto protect us and to provide for us. We are trusting Him with our daily lives. 3. When we seek Him, God rewards us by revealing Himself to us. For those who really want to know the Lord, this is a cool promise! 4. Make sure they understand the faith of the person or people they mention from Hebrews 11. Their answer should focus on the fact that those people all trusted God in the midst of great trials. 5. Hopefully, they include Jesus in their answer. Jesus is worthy of our trust.

Who Are You?

2 Corinthians 5:17
17

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!

When you asked Jesus to be your Savior, many exciting things happened to you. 2 Corinthians
5:17 says you became a new creation. In this lesson, we will look at some of the changes that have taken place in your life.
1. What does the phrase the old has gone refer to? Hint: Do you have a different attitude toward some of the things you used to do?

2. Look up Romans 8:16-17. We who believe in Jesus are Gods children. You are not just a servant, but you are a son or daughter. How does a child from a household differ from a servant of that household?

3. Verse 17 calls us heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ. What is an heir? How could you possibly be on Gods inheritance list as a CO-HEIR WITH JESUS? What does that mean for you?

88

So many Christians live life unaware of the ramifications of their new identity in Christ. Too
often we think of ourselves as poor beggars within the kingdom of God when, in fact, God did much more for us than save us from the penalty of our sins. He also broke the power of sin over our lives.

4. Look up Ephesians 4:22-24. This passage says we are to put off the old self and put on the new self. What does that mean? Has this been easy or difficult for you?

e
s s o n 6

These are a few of the things that happened to you when you put your trust in Jesus for salva-

tion. Learning the ramifications of these changes and living them out is the wonder and blessing of the Christians life in Christ.

1. Philippians 3:20 says that our citizenship is in heaven. What does it mean to be a citizen? What does it mean to be a citizen of heaven?

2. Ephesians 1:4-5 says that we are adopted sons (or daughters) and that we were chosen by God. How does it affect you to know that God purposely chose you because HE WANTED YOU specifically as His child?

3. There is always a price to adopt a child. Read 1 Peter 1:18-19. What was the price for your adoption as a child of God?

4. The value of any object is dependent on what an individual is willing to pay for it. Too many people deal with feelings of worthlessness from the bad things they experienced while growing up. Jesus was willing to pay the ultimate price for you. Because He loves you so much, He placed the value of priceless on you and then gave everything to purchase you. With this in mind, answer the question, Who are you?

89

eaders Guide and Related Resources

Too many Christians dont know about their identity in Christ. To have a strong foundation, we
must know who we are. Though we are bombarded by all sorts of lies regarding who we are, this lesson presents Biblical truth. It is important for new believers to see that who they are is not based on how they presently feel about themselves. Who they are now (the new creation) is based on what the Scriptures say.

1. The old has gone refers to our old sinful identity. We have been transformed from sinnersby-nature into saints-by-nature (who occasionally give into sin). They may give an example that relates to this such as, I dont cuss as much now. Who they are now makes the thoughts and actions of the old life seem less appealing. When they give a good example of a change in their way of thinking, reinforce it by saying the outward change is a result of the inner change. The old is gone, the new things have come! 2. A child has rights in a family, carries the family name and typically bears the family resemblance. A servant has no rights and no standing in the family. We are much more than mere servants. 3. An heir is one who receives an inheritance. We are co-heirs with Jesus because we have been adopted into Gods family. In this life, we have Gods precious and magnificent promises (2 Peter 1:4). And in the next life, we will be in our heavenly home (1 Peter 1:4). 4. On a daily basis, and even on a moment-by-moment basis, we must choose how we will live either as we used to or in the new way, which is consistent with who we are now.

1. We are aliens here (1 Peter 2:11). We belong to the Kingdom of God, and that is the place of our permanent residence. While here, we are Christs ambassadors (2 Corinthians 5:20). Any answer that relates to the rights and privileges of believers in Jesus is appropriate here. 2. No one sneaks into the Kingdom of God by accident. We are children of God because of the Fathers great love for us (1 John 3:1). He chose us, knowing everything about us. It is a wonderful feeling to know that we are loved and chosen by our Heavenly Father. 3. Jesus precious blood was the purchase price for our adoption. It is far more valuable than gold or silver.

Gal. 5:22 & 23 tells us what happens in our lives as a result of living the Christian life in the
power of the Holy Spirit. 1. How would your life change if you experienced these fruit regularly?

Acts 1:8 says, But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you

trol of your life. Confessing our sins (see 1 John. 1:9) brings us into agreement and right standing with God concerning what weve done. Yielding control gives the Holy Spirit permission to direct us (If He is in control, He also empowers us).

Lord Jesus, I confess that I have been directing my own life. I now yield control of my life to You and ask You to fill me with Your Spirit as You commanded me. Thank You that based on Your promise in 1 John 5:14-15, I can know that now Your Spirit will direct and empower me. In Jesus name, Amen.

Prayer is talking with God. If this prayer expresses your desire, you can pray it in faith right now and be filled with
the Holy Spirit.

Some people feel differently when they ask the Lord to fill them with His Spirit. Some people

have dramatic manifestations. Some people dont notice anything at all. How it happens doesnt matter because we are filled with the Spirit by faith (refer to the train diagram in lesson 2) not by our feelings.

As you now yield your life moment by moment to the Lord, you will notice the fruit of the Spirit
increasing and a new power to be a witness for Him.

This is a subjective question. Answers should reflect the inner changes that will occur. New attitudes, motivations, and perspectives on life are all a part of the transformation that can be discussed. Beware of answers that center on externals like more church attendance or stopping certain behaviors. Because true external changes are dependent on the internal changes brought about by the Holy Spirit, no real change happens apart from submission to His direction.

Differences in attitude and action should reflect an understanding of dependence on the Holy Spirits power.

Freedom in Jesus

Galatians 5:1 It was for freedom that Christ set us free; therefore keep standing firm and do not be subject again to a yoke of slavery.
1

When you received Jesus as your Savior, you were not only set free from the penalty of your
sin, you were set free from the power of sin. 1. In what area of your life have you experienced freedom the most since you put your trust in Christ? Where do you still need more freedom?

2. Is there an area(s) of your behavior in which you still feel enslaved? Do not be ashamed, the Bible says we were all enslaved (see Romans 6).

3. Freedom is something that extends beyond our actions into our thoughts and emotions. Worry, anxiety and fear can be replaced with the peace of God which passes understanding (Philippians 4:6-7). Do you see any emotional bondage in your life?

4. Romans 12:2 says that we are to be transformed by the renewing of our minds. The deception is that we can derive some benefit from sin (see Romans 6:21) and the lie that we have reason to worry or fear. Do you want freedom? Are you experiencing it?

98

1. Have you noticed how Jesus had compassion on sinners and was harsh toward those who were religious and self-righteous? Why was this the case?

2. Look up Matthew 23:25-28. What value did Jesus place on conformity to rules without internal change)?

3. Look up John 8:31-36. Who set you free? How can you live out that freedom according to these verses?

4. Look up John 14:6 and John 8:44. The devil is the father of lies, and Jesus is the Truth. When we believe the lies of the devil concerning sin, and act on them, we become enslaved. When we believe in Jesus and live in the Truth, we experience freedom. How can you ensure that you live in freedom?

The Importance of Forgiveness

Based on The Importance of Forgiveness by John Arnott

Here we DO get what we deserve...we receive justice. Look at Matthew 18:23-35 We cant operate in BOTH realms. We cant want mercy for ourselves but justice for everyone who has wronged us. When we demand justice for others, that is what WE will receive in return (v. 35).

Introduction
We want our lives to count for eternity We want to live for the Lord and disciple others But Often wounding within our hearts sap much of our resources and energy to live wholeheartedly for the Lord.

Hosea 4:6 My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. . .

1. Critical thoughts and words can hinder us from moving freely in the grace of God Studies show that most people operate 80%
negative, critical and accusatory, which leaves only 20% positive Negative, judgmental thoughts are always of the enemy (2 Cor. 11:3) 2. The spiritual realm is run on the basis of laws, just like the physical realm (i.e. the law of gravity). If we violate these laws, we suffer the consequences.

Matthew 6:14-15 For is you forgive others for their transgressions, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others, then your Father will not forgive your transgressions.

The Fruits of Judgment Sowing and reaping : Where we sow seed of unforgiveness
or judgment, we will reap in kind (Galatians 6:7).

The Law of Judgment

Matthew 7:1-2 We All operate on one of two spiritual planes: Law and Justice or Grace and Mercy

Grace and Mercy Realm of Jesus Christ where He paid for our
sins Satan has no legal rights here (Colossians 3:1-3 your life is hidden) This is where the anointing flows

See to it that no one misses the grace of God and that no bitter root grows up to cause trouble and defile many (Galatians 6:7). Bitter roots defile all of those around us They spread the seeds of bitterness, criticism and unforgiveness. They keep us from experiencing the grace and mercy of the Lord. We will reap in the very areas WE hold unforgiveness.Satan will see to it.

Application Forgiveness is not a nice option, it is an absolute necessity. We must understand the consequences of reaping in our

Section Three: Personal Healing

Accomplishing Forgiveness
Material taken from Elijah House Training 1
What is forgiveness?
Forgiveness is surrendering to Jesus our right to hold a judgment against someone, to be paid back for sins against us, and instead letting God be the judge and jury. It in no way justifies sin or removes accountability from those who have hurt us, nor does it mean that we must act as though nothing has happened to us..

The Process of Forgiveness

In the garden at Gethsemane, Jesus identified with each of us; He became our sin. As we pray we ask the Lord to identify us with the sin of all mankind: To make us aware of the sins that broke our brother and caused Him to hurt us. To make us aware of any sins which defiled our brother and tempted him to hurt us. To make us see how we have failed him. This brings us not only to forgive others, but to ask God to forgive us as well. We cannot forgive on our own; we must rely on the Lord. Only Jesus can accomplish forgiveness for us.

Forgiveness is not an option

For if you forgive others for their transgressions, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others, then your Father will not forgive your transgressions. Matthew 6:14-15

A prayer of forgiveness. . .

Forgiveness is more difficult when resentment is buried in the heart When we were too young to understand our
anger or how to pray or express forgiveness When we dont recognize that we are angry When we refuse to forgive immediately

Resentment lies in the heart, often forgotten and suppressed

How to recognize when resentment lies in the heart:

If you know youve been hurt by someone. . . Is your heart glad to see him/her approach? Do you WANT fellowship, or do you try to avoid him/her? Do you still rehearse speeches youd like to deliver? Do you imagine things youd like to say or do to get even and then have to repent?

Thank you, Jesus, for taking forgiveness out of my hands. It is not an option. You simply said I have to do it, yet I cant even do that! Do for me what I cannot do for myself. By myself, I cannot forgive. But, for your sake, Jesus, I give you any right I felt was mine to throw people, even myself, into a debtors prison. I release _________________; I forgive them for ___________________. Before You and my counselor as witness, they owe me nothing. I give You the right to hold them accountable for their actions. Lord, dismantle the prison I build for others.
Completing the Process: We may need to forgive more than once, particularly in areas of deep wounding. Forgiveness is a process. Blessing: Part of our healing also comes from blessing the ones who have harmed us. Praying blessing over their lives (Luke 6:28 and 35):
Restores our ability to love them and heals our hearts. Enables us to receive blessings from the Lord. Provides a spiritual bridge that can draw them to Christ.

If you cant remember if you held resentment . . . Are you losing power? Are you having difficulty
coming into Gods presence? Do you have physical problems? Proverbs 6:1215 Do you experience periods of despondency? Is your sleep or rest disturbed?

106 Identifying Unforgiveness

Father or Mother absent (physically or emotionally? Is your sleep or rest disturbed? Abandoned or rejected (physically, emotionally, or verbally) Are you afflicted physically in your body? Does seeing a particular person trigger a strong emotional reaction? Do you feel like a child again in their presence? Do you avoid people who have hurt you or others who remind you of those who hurt you? Do you still rehearse speeches or imagine getting even with those who hurt you? Can you sincerely bless the one who hurt you? Does remembering particularly hurtful event trigger a strong emotional reaction? Does the painful experience bring to mind anything for which God can be praised? Do you have a sense that forgiveness has really been accomplished in seeing positive results? Does depression return quickly after joyful times? Do you experience unexplained physical, emotional, or mental exhaustion or torment? (Matthew 18:34) Is there a reoccurring pattern of sin or difficulty in your life? (Ephesians 4:26-27) Do you have difficulty confronting others or receiving correction? Are your prayers unanswered or the presence of God lost? Note: Any one or even a combination of these symptoms could be explained by a number of reasons. However, if the answer is yes to many of these questions, you need to pray and ask God if there is unforgiveness.

Forgiveness Prayer Lord, I forgive _______. I give You permission to take the judgment and bitterness out of my life. I do not want this in my lifeI surrender it to You and ask You to remove itto heal me where I have been wounded, to forgive me where I have sinned. I choose not to blame or hold the actions of others against them. I hereby surrender my right to be paid back for my loss, by the one who has sinned against me, and, in so doing I declare my trust in God, alone, as the Righteous Judge. Father God, bless them in every way. In Jesus name, Amen.

Bitter Roots
Material Taken From Elijah House Training 1

Bitter Roots

In a tree or plant, a root is a hidden, underground structure which is a conduit for nourishment. Roots are habitual ways we drink nurture from God, others, ourselves and nature. Our roots also lie beneath the surface, usually hidden. When we have bitter roots, we drink harm to ourselves and to those around us. See to it that no one comes short of the grace of God; that no root of bitterness springing up causes trouble, and by it many be defiled (Hebrews 12:15).

Because of the law of judgment and another spiritual law, the law of sowing and reaping, our judgments carry great power. We are destined, by law, to reap the judgments we sow in life.

Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, this he will also reap Galatians 6:7
In addition, another spiritual law, the law of increase kicks in. God designed the law of increase for our blessing, so that when we blessed others, we would in turn be blessed with even greater blessing. Because of the fall of man, this law of increase also works with sin as well. We may sow a small seed of judgment and bitterness, only to reap an enormous harvest of bitter fruit in our lives later on. Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin; and sin when it is full-grown brings forth death. James 1:15

The Law of judgment

Just as there are physical laws which govern the physical universe, so are there spiritual laws which govern our relationships with God and with others. One of these spiritual laws is the law of judgment. This is spelled out clearly in scripture: Do not judge so that you will not be judged. For in the way you judge, you will be judged; and by your standard of measure, it will be measured to you. Matthew 7:1-2

How does this play out in life?

An example: A woman has an emotionally distant father At a young age she judges her father for ignoring her and not treating her with care and love The seed of judgment is sown in her life She grows up unaware of or forgetting the judgment shes made Because of the power of law, she will reap the same type of behavior in the significant men in her life, primarily her husband She may find that she married her father (generally our judgments will play out with the primary people in our lives: parents, siblings, spouses. . . ) Judgments are empowered by spiritual law and are significant in determining the course of our lives and relationships.

Therefore you have no excuse, every one of you who passes judgment, for in that which you judge another, you condemn yourself; for you who judge practice the same things. Romans 2:1
The law of judgment applies not only to our conscious actions, known and performed outwardly, but also to what is lodged in our heart, repressed, unknown and unexpressed. These judgments become bitter roots which permeate our entire life. Bitter root judgments not brought to the cross of Christ defile everyone around us. Bitter roots may be the most powerful negative force in our lives, bringing destruction to us and those around us.

What are bitter root judgments? They are our sinful reactions to hurt Condemning judgments of people The refusal or inability to forgive (They are NOT the terrible or hurtful things
that happen TO us, Rather, they are our sinful REACTIONS to those things.)

108

Sowing and Reaping

Mankinds sinning is like a man who throws a ball against a wall. At some point it will return to him: Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. (Galatians 6:7) "They sow the wind and reap the whirlwind. (Hosea 8:7a)

Bitter Root Expectancy

This is a psychological practice in our natures. Though not as powerful as judgments, expectancy can still influence our lives. When we expect certain things to happen, we develop habits of self-fulfilling prophecy, by which we push people to fulfill our picture of the way things will happen. Women will always be critical. Men will always be controlling and jealous. No one ever listens to me.

How does this play out? A woman with a distant, unloving father develops the
expectancy that all men will behave like that She expects the men in her life to treat her with indifference Consciously or unconsciously she projects her expectations onto her husband or other significant men She holds herself at a distance to protect herself Her husband feels pushed away by her and, in turn, distances himself further, fulfilling her initial expectancy 1. Recognition: See the patterns in our lives where we have judged and then reaped bitter fruit. Where there is bitter fruit in our lives, there is a root. Ask God to reveal the root. 2. Repentance: Choosing to turn from the judgment and to forgive. 3. Prayer: Demolish judgment and expectancy by taking them to the cross of Christ.

Healing for Bitter Roots and Bitter Root Expectancy

By the time our sin returns to be reaped it has grown to overwhelming proportions: If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him. (James 1:5) God, unwilling that any should perish, sent Jesus to identify with us in all our sinfulness. Jesus took our sin upon Himself and died with it for us. Our sin was cancelled and the law of sowing and reaping fulfilled in Him: "Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. (Matthew 5:17)

Prayer

Lord, I recognize I have judged __________ for _________ and have locked myself into that same behavior/attitude. I choose to forgive him for hurting me, and I choose to release my right to hold this offense against him, knowing it is up to You only to judge all of us. I put the cross of Christ between myself and the sowing and reaping of this judgment. Please forgive me for the sinful ways that Ive reacted and for the ways in which I have done the very same to others. (Be specific)

We are called to take hold of the life that Jesus won for us by His death and resurrection. (Philippians 3:10-15) and to walk in a daily discipline described for us in Scripture (Romans 6:6-14).

Bitter Root ExpectationsWorksheet 1

Do you have certain negative expectations or conclusions about life, yourself, or your relationship with others and God that continue to be fulfilled? Bitter root expectations show up in how we think or speak. We may not be aware of an expectation as a bitter root expectation because to us it feels like the truth. Ask the Lord to speak to you where you expect things that are contrary to His love.

B. From which parent or person did you learn this expectation?

A. Bitter Root Expectations

Examples: I expect that people will not see me as a blessing. I expect that I will have to work hard for everything I get. I expect men (or women) to. I expect close relationship with others to be painful (or burdensome, or). 1.______________________________________________ ________________________________________________ ________________________________________________ ________________________________________________ 2.______________________________________________ ________________________________________________ ________________________________________________ ________________________________________________ 3.______________________________________________ ________________________________________________ ________________________________________________ ________________________________________________ 4.______________________________________________ ________________________________________________ ________________________________________________ ________________________________________________

C. Forgiveness Process
Wherever you have identified a bitter root expectation above in section (A), you need to: Forgive the person who wounded you in the way that caused you to expect this. Confess to God the expectation. Ask for His forgiveness where you have made the expectation into truth. Treat the expectation as a stronghold (see lesson on strongholds). There may be people in your life you have treated unfairly because of the expectation, that you will need to ask to forgive you.

110

Bitter Root JudgmentsWorksheet 2

Remember that our judgments, against parents and others, show up in two basic ways 1. We wound others in the ways we were wounded. 2. We continue to experience a similar wounding to the ways we were wounded. Do you have a current pattern where you wound those who are close to you? This can be both hurtful things you do and through blessings that you do not give. Write down any pattern in your life of where you wound others. This may identify the reaping of a judgment.

B. Patterns in my life of where hurtful things continue to happen to me.

This can be both hurtful things that happen to you, a blessing that continues to not be given to you. Write down any pattern in your life where you continue to be wounded. This may identify the reaping of a judgment.

Who is the parent (or person) that I judged?

A1. A2. A3. A4. B1. B2. B3. B4.

Wherever you have identified a bitter root judgment you need to forgive the person who first wounded you, and then ask God to forgive you for the judgment. Wherever you have identified that you have wounded others through doing hurtful things or not giving blessing, you also need to ask them for forgiveness.

Section Three: Personal Healing

Dealing with the Effects of Generational Sin

We reap blessing and harm through what was sown by our forefathers We clearly inherit blessings passed down from our forefathers: strong gene pool, longevity talents, gifts benefits of inventions, sound investments and wise decisions Deuteronomy 5:9 states that we also reap the consequences of unconfessed sin: I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, and on the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me, but showing lovingkindness to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.
There are impartial spiritual laws which affect each person and family: Sowing and reaping Galatians 6:7 Judgment Matthew 7:1-2 Honoring father and mother Ephesians 6:2-3 When we choose not to repent, thereby not letting Jesus take our sin on the cross, we deny Him access, and condemn future generations to reap what we have sown.
Pray blessing on the family and continue in prayer for

hiding from the enemy.

Recognition: trace the family history, watching for recurrent patterns. Repentance: repent for ancestors and for yourself Forgiveness: forgive ancestors and affirm that Christ forgives them for their participation in the sin Prayer: Place the cross between generations so the sins of the ancestors are stopped there; claim and believe this. Pray over each specific pattern: divorce, cancer, alcoholism, etc. and reckon it as dead on the cross. For occult involvement pray for any powers of darkness to be cast away and angels sent to protect the family.

Ungodly Beliefs
For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh, for the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but divinely powerful for the destruction of fortresses (strongholds). We are destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ. 2 Corinthians 10:3-5
Replacing ungodly beliefs with godly beliefs:

All of us deal with ungodly beliefs that become part of our thinking and means of operating. These ungodly beliefs are used by the enemy to keep us in spiritual bondage.

Ungodly beliefs:
All beliefs, decisions, attitudes, agreements, judgments, expectations, vows and oaths that DO NOT agree with God (His word, His nature or His character)

Godly beliefs:

Identify the ungodly beliefs. Ask God to expose the

All beliefs, decisions, attitudes, agreements, judgments, expectations, vows, and oaths that DO agree with God (His word, His nature and His character)

The perfect ungodly belief:

wounding and the lie that was planted in that wounding. Write down the ungodly belief. Confess it to God and ask forgiveness for believing the lie. Renounce the lie. Take it to the cross and ask God to break its power in your life. Receive the truth. Write down the truth from Gods Word. Note: Theophostic Prayer Ministry is key in letting the Lord reveal areas of ungodly beliefs in our lives. If this is an area of struggle for you, we highly suggest you contact the church about receiving this kind of prayer ministry.

Examples:

No one loves me I am all alone I am defective God doesnt love me

How ungodly beliefs are formed We inherit the beliefs of our parents and family and are
affected by their role modeling and teaching. Wounding in childhood affects our hearts and our perceptions of what is true in the world. The sinful environment around us, as well as our own sin nature affects our way of perceiving truth. In time, these areas of ungodly beliefs/lies can form strongholds from which enemy can operate in and through us.

Practice Writing Ungodly & Godly Beliefs

Ungodly Belief (UGB) Godly Belief (GB) Scripture

Those important to me will abandon me at God has promised to be with me always. He critical times and in critical events. has also given me others in the body of Christ who will be faithful friends. My spouse will never treat me the way I want to be treated.

Matthew 18:20; Proverbs 18:24

As I forgive and repent of my judgments about Ephesians 5:21-33 my spouse and the way that I have treated him/ her, God is free to work in his/her life to bring about loving change. God, who is love, can and will teach me how to 1 Corinthians 13:1-8; 1 John 4:8 enter into 1 Corinthians 13 love. I choose to let down my defenses and to enter into His kind of love. God is holding the universe together. It will not fall apart if I rest or play. He desires for me to have a balanced life, to enjoy Him and His creation, as well as to do satisfying and fulfilling work.

I will never fully be able to give or receive love, to have intimate, satisfying relationships with people. God will not be pleased with me if I take time for myself to rest and play.

Ephesians 2:11; Hebrews 4:1-11

117 The following examples illustrate the difference between believing factual truth and believing Gods truth. Apparent Fact I am just a nobody, going nowhere. Gods Truth God chose me before the foundation of the world. His plans for me are good.

The leadership of this church God says I am building my cant be trusted church. So much is changing; I cant count on anything. I am going through many trials and difficulties. God says I am the same yesterday, today and forever. Put your trust in Me. God will bring me through the trials and mature me in the process.

Can you hear the difference between believing the reality of our circumstances or believing and confessing Gods eternal truth? We dont negate the level of fact, but we can say, God, theres something more, more than just the facts that my natural eyes are seeing and my natural circumstances are causing to happen. Theres something more, and thats your truth. Prayer: Lord, help me to be that spiritual man/women who can discern and embrace Your truth.

Section Three: Personal Healing

False Refuges
Let us therefore draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and may find grace to help in time. Hebrews 4:16

What is a refuge?

Refuge is a place that provides shelter or protection from danger or distress. Throughout the Psalms, the Lord is our refuge.

As Christians our sinful nature will try and disguise our places of false refuge. We strive and call it discipline or we enter into futility and call it surrender. When we are in crisis or difficulty we will be tempted to run back to our false refuge rather then risk and trust in God to meet us. This will typically happen when we feel needy or insecure, inadequate, unsafe and needing to protect ourselves.

What is a false refuge?

The problem of false refuges.

A false refuge is a refuge created by our sinful nature where it insists on determining and controlling where we will find refuge, which is anyplace but in God. This refuge is false because the sinful nature separates us from God, who is the only One who can meet our basic needs.

We are needy.

The problem is not having needs or even our wanting to get our needs met. Our needs are real and are stirred by God at times to draw us to Him. We are not to die to our needs, but we are to die to our sinful ways of determining how we will meet our needs outside of God. These basic needs include protection, comfort, value, purpose, love, power, well-being, acceptance and being known, heard and understood.

Demonic strongholds keep our minds in darkness so that we repeatedly run back to our places of false refuge not seeing that we are being separated from God. If a false refuge is exposed, our sinful mind will deny, minimize, blame others, or rationalize to justify our running to it. Even where we wish to be set free our experience will tell us it is impossible. We can move through different places of false refuge in a reoccurring pattern. We can go from anger to self defense to withdrawal, to self pity, to addiction. Heb. 12:1 Our places of false refuge turn us away from God and hardens our heart. Our hard heart becomes like a fortress and we can believe we have been shut out, not seeing that is it us who has shut out God and others. Heb. 3:12-13 We need to be healed of the things that make it so hard for us to trust God. Once we see our places of false refuge, by the grace of God, we need to ask for the gift of repentance, hating the sin involved. We need to be aware of and in touch with our needs and not suppress them. We need to determine to run to the Lord when we are in need, asking Him what is His way for us to have our needs met. Hebrews 4:16 As we repent of our places of false refuge and our insistence that we control our lives we learn how to live in a place of surrender to Gods mercy and grace. Proverbs 10:29

Healing from false refuges.

How do we develop a place of false refuge?

Our parents sin and poor role models. Our inherited sinful nature and our sin. Our personality and sensitivity. The sub-culture we become part of. Some are established early in life, even in the womb or early infancy. e.g. withdrawal, tantrum, fantasy Others are developed as we get older e.g. addictions, sarcasm, performance. The thoughts and behaviors that make up our false refuges become more complex and hidden as we get older. For example, anger can become passive and hidden.

120

Scripture

Proverbs 10:29 The way of the Lord is a refuge for the righteous, but it is the ruin of those who do evil.. Matthew 5:3-6 Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. Romans 6:16 Dont you know that when you offer yourselves to someone to obey him as slaves, you are slaves to the one whom you obey-whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness? 2 Corinthians 10:4-5 The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. Hebrews 3:12-13 See to it, brothers, that none of you has a sinful, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God. But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called Today, so that none of you may be hardened by sins deceitfulness. Hebrews 4:16 Let us therefore approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need. Hebrews 12:1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.

Our own feelings of hurt or anger or rejection are seen as not godly, therefore, we try to push them away and act nice. This niceness is a potent form of denial. In essence the sinful nature has risen up, in a disguised way, (remember it is deceitful above measure) and offered to save us from the sinful nature. It has offered to take care of itself. Either way, whether we win in wrong reaction, or sin in trusting self to make sure we do not react, the sinful nature remains in control. This is what creates religion, our self controlled life trying to be good enough to please God so He might be convinced to save us. (See how nice I am?) Instead God would have us trust fully in the salvation He has already accomplished through Jesus Christ, and not in ourselves, to be saved. When hurt, God would have us:

1. Acknowledge to God that you have reacted to something

hurtful (emotion of anger, hurt, jealousy, frustration, etc.) Lord, this hurts! 2. Describe the situation to God. He was unfair. 3. Choose to release the emotion to God and forgive the person who offended you and repent of your own reaction if necessary. Ask God to give you His truth and perspective. Sample prayer for running to False Refuges instead of running to God. Lord, I acknowledge I hurt and I am in a needy and vulnerable place. My sinful reactions have caused me to run to _______________________ instead of running to You. Please forgive me. Cleanse me of this unrighteousness. Enable me by the power of Your Spirit that works within me to surrender and run to You instead. Help me to find comfort in You and You alone. Amen.
All information for this teaching on False Refuges was taken from The Keys to Freedom Conference, October 2005. This includes the following worksheet on false refuges.

Enrichment
How to run to God as a refuge when hurt or offended When we are hurt or in need, and we do not want to have a sinful reaction, we can be tempted to deny the need or the hurt by cutting ourselves off from the emotion. We may do this in an effort to be like Jesus. To suppress a need or hurt is a subtle way for the sinful nature to deceive us. We do not simply come to God, being real with Him about our feelings and sinful reactions, or even about the reality of our pain (Christians arent supposed to be able to be hurt) and allow Him to minister to us. Instead the sinful nature has risen up to say that it will help us be good, and protect us from the sin that the nasty sinful nature would get us into. (I wont be angry!)

Section Three: Personal Healing

How We See God

Material taken from Elijah House Basic I Training In our infancy and childhood, mothers and fathers model a picture of God for us. By how they act and what they do, we see what God is like. We interpret each succeeding experience through judgments we have made and the expectations we have developed in response to what has gone before. If we have made many judgments, our views of life and God become distorted. By the time we reach adulthood, our minds may have been taught to believe Gods love and desire to bless, but our hearts say, Oh, yeah? Hes just like Dad (or Mom). We are not able to see life as it really is.. experiences with our parents have given us tinted spectacles from which we view life. are necessarily guilty. The problem is in the heart of the child, and his or her perceptions may or may not be accurate.

Forgiving parents, thus ridding ourselves of resentments hidden in our hearts. Repentance: choosing life and asking the Lord to change how we see our parents and how we see Father God.

The Effect of Judgment

In any area where resentment, bitterness or judgment is lodged in our heart against our parents, our spirit is darkened, and in that area we cannot really know God. We grow into adulthood but our childish ways of thinking remain. We project our image of father onto God. Questions like: How could a loving God allow..?If a person sees God as unloving Hes generally had a father who is unloving. Why doesnt He care? This again points to the perception that we had of our parents. Id better not make a mistake, or else! When parents heap blame and fear, we may become protective and fearful as adults. Why doesnt He do something? When fathers fail to discipline, children may project that lack of discipline on God. All of these questions stem from experiences that weve had with our earthly fathers that have called into question the character of God.

Bringing Healing to our Perceptions of God Recognizing judgments and how they affect how
we see God. This can be difficult when we have good parents. It is not that mother and father

Honoring Father & Mother

Material taken from Elijah House Basic I Training
Honor: In Hebrew, honor or kabod means to make glorious In Greek, it is timee to place high value or price upon The key lies with our response to the sins (or perceived sins) of our parents. As we look at our upbringing, it is important to seek God for the truth of how we responded to our parents and family. Excusing the bad behavior of family members is a common practice of adult children who now have the maturity to see more clearly what was going on in the family during their childhood. But excusing our parents is also not the answer. We must ask God to help us deal in truth. Ultimately, we must choose to forgive our parents and bring any judgments we hold against them to the cross of Christ. Facing the truth and forgiving our parents honors them and honors God. When we choose to honor our parents through forgiveness, it frees us to experience blessing in the areas in which we reaped bitter fruit before.

The Law of God

The law of honoring father and mother is another spiritual law which has tremendous long-term implications for our lives. In every area where we could, either consciously or unconsciously, honor our parents life will go well with us. However, in every area where we judged or dishonored our parents, either consciously or unconsciously, life will not go well with us. This law is woven into the very fabric of Gods universe..there are no exceptions.

Honor your father and your mother, as the Lord you God has commanded you, that your days may be prolonged and that it may go well with you on the land which the Lord you God gives you. Deuteronomy 5:16
Honor your father and mother (which is the first commandment with a promise), so that it may be well with you, and that you may live long on the earth. Ephesians 6:2-3 The root and trunk of our life is with our parents (or whoever raised us) and our siblings. The root system of our nature is built in the first six years of our life, while the trunk of our character structure is formed from ages six to twelve. Much of how our lives will unfold depend upon our responses toward our parents. The primary factor is our response, not our parents mistakes or sins. Did we honor or dishonor them?

Note: Honoring parents does not necessarily mean that we

can or should have a relationship with them. In cases where there has been abuse and there is no repentance on the part of the parent, it may be unsafe and unwise to maintain contact. It may be that contact must be limited and supervised in order to prevent further harm. The main issue is the heart of the child.that he/she continues to walk in forgiveness.

Healing relationships with parents Recognize our sinful reactions which set into motion the laws of God. Choose to forgive parents for their mistakes and sins. Ask forgiveness for our unforgiveness and judgment Bring any judgment to the cross of Christ. God gives us the grace to forgive and honor our parents, even those who are difficult to honor.

Honoring dishonorable parents

Honoring parents can be difficult for children who grow up in homes with dishonorable parents who abuse those whom God has entrusted to their care. This law does not imply that these types of wrong behavior are justified in any way. Parents who abuse, neglect, or hurt their children will be held accountable by God for their behavior. To honor does not mean that we deny the truth of what happened. Fabricating the past or pretending abuse did not occur does not honor parents.

Performance Orientation

What is performance orientation?

It is the tendency of Christians to fall back into human effort and achievement. Our mind and spirit may know about the grace of God, but our hearts retain the habit of earning love by performing. It does not refer to the work we do or the things we accomplish, but rather to the attitude which compels us. It is an acceptance of lies about ourselves that has been built into our nature from infancy: If I do it wrong, I will not be loved. If I do not live up to family standards, I will not belong. There is a right way to do things, and if a thing is worth doing, its worth doing right. Paul wrote to the Galatians church concerning the problem: ..You foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you? Before your very eyes Jesus Christ was clearly portrayed as crucified. I would like to learn just one thing from you: did you receive the Spirit by observing the law, or by believing what you heard? Are you so foolish? After beginning with the Spirit, are you now trying to attain your goal by human effort? Galatians 3:1-3

out. Family values: What you do reflects on us! Position in the family: first, middle, babycompetition or comparison Skills, talents: family comparisons/ competition

What does it look like?

The performance oriented person may develop a loser attitude

work hard to please and in the process becomes

lost to self

feels like he/she is fooling peopleselling self for

love

is angry that he/she must work so hard to be loved

(often the anger is suppressed)

may begin to rebel and sabotage success in order

to fail (Will I be loved even if Im a loser?)

needs to succeed/develop workaholism needs to be complimented cannot believe compliments cannot receive criticism is compulsively defensive takes responsibility for everything is always over-busy tends to blame others is tired is angry (sometimes in a hidden way) ministers but cannot be ministered to cannot receive gifts with reciprocating tries to control people and situations is unable to be truly intimate is lonely

Where does it come from?

Performance orientation comes out of our reaction to our home environment. Various messages, sent knowingly or unknowingly, within the home can generate a response of performance from a child:

Prenatal or birth trauma: a child feels unwanted from

the beginning and tries to earn his place in life. Lack of affection or laughter in the home. Conditional love during training: You did good; Mommy loves you. Unwise discipline which sends the wrong message: Where did my little boy/girl go? This cant be my. . . or Go to your room until

This cycle is a common dynamic in people dealing with performance orientation. As these individuals come to believe the lie that they must earn the right to be loved, they work harder and harder to perform. This performance is rewarded in countless ways: the job promotion, the higher pay, the status, the compliments, the sense of well-being that comes with approval and acceptance. It all seems so perfect! But something begins to happen. The more performanceoriented people strive, he less reward there seems to be. They have passed the top of the cycle, doing more and more and receiving less and less reward. At some point, their spirits realize that their efforts are not getting the desired results. Everything they do to please others and to be accepted is not bringing peace. In its place have come anxiety, tension and an increasing sense of futility. At this point, a mild depression may set in. It is not always noticed right away and usually is not tended to. Work is no longer rewarding, hence there is decreased performance and thus less affirmation. The depression deepens, spiraling quickly. Less reward, more depression, less ability to

perform, less reward, deeper depression until the debilitation spiral empties into a black hole. The depressed performers may live in that hole for some time, in the company of stored angers, hates, disappointments and a sense of numbness. There are no vivid colors or sweet sounds. The spirit may shut down and can no longer support vitality in the body or soul. This is the bottom of the cycle. At some point, these people may realize they are not getting the needed love and acceptance, and begin working to get themselves back on track. Out of nowhere they seem to be able to muster just enough strength to earn that allimportant pat on the back, that fix of love that sends a surge of life-giving energy. Every little bit of renewed strength enables them to perform again. Signs of acceptance and love appear more frequently and the depression lifts. Unfortunately, the cycle is only beginning again.

The Issue of Pre-marital Sex...Why Wait?

In our current culture, it has become common-place for couples to feel that it is normal to have sexual intimacy while dating. Having sex with whomever you are currently going out with has become almost expected, and this is constantly reinforced by the media. As Christians, this leads us to several crucial questions: experience a wonderful and unique oneness within the marriage relationship. Or do you not know that the one who joins himself to a prostitute is one body with her? For He says, The two shall become one flesh. 1Corinthians 6:16 When we are sexually intimate, even if its only a one night stand, we are bonded to that person forever. It has been likened to super-gluing two pieces of wood together and then ripping them apart. Splinters of each remain in each others life, causing discomfort and pain. A spiritual bond is made with that individual because that is what God designed sexual intimacy to be like. When a person bonds with many partners sexually, their spirit is dispersed in many different directions, rather like an over-loaded transceiver. The result is an inability to truly bond with the person they eventually marry. Fornication results in a marriage undermined by the ghosts of past relationships. The good news is that these spiritual ties can be broken through repentance and prayer. (See the prayer under additional resources) 2. Physical reasons: ANYONE who has sex outside of marriage runs the risk of sexually transmitted disease. The statistics on STDs are well-documented. In addition, the possibility of unwanted pregnancy and abortion is another huge risk. It is estimated that 43% of women in the church have had an abortion at some time in their life. Many women carry the guilt and pain of past abortions with them throughout their lives. 3. Emotional reasons: Becoming intimate and then breaking up can cause tremendous emotional scarring and guilt. While real love always gives and seeks the best interests of the one loved, in premarital sex, each is taking for his own reasons. Confusion is compounded by the fact that the taking can sometimes look like giving. Even if the couple eventually marries, the guilt of the past can follow them into their marriage. There can be resentment on the part of one or both partners that they couldnt wait until marriage for sex.

What DOES the Bible have to say about the issue of premarital sex?
Is it wrong before God? Why would God prohibit sex before marriage?

What does the Bible say about premarital sex?

First of all, with any biblical command there are two underlying reasons for it. One is to provide for us, and the second is to protect us. The Bible states clearly that both fornication and adultery are wrong before God. Marriage is to be held in honor among all, and the marriage bed is to be undefiled; for fornicators and adulterers God will judge. Hebrews 13:4

Jesus Himself said this:

For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, slanders. These are the things which defile the man.. Matthew 15:19-20

Note: The word fornication refers to engaging in sex before

marriage. Adultery refers to a married person having sex with someone who is not their spouse.

Why would God prohibit sex before marriage?

There are a variety of reasons that God prohibits sex before marriage. Well focus on four areas: spiritual, physical, emotional, and relational. 1. Spiritual Reasons: God designed us to bond sexually with ONE person during our lifetime. (The only exception to this is when a spouse dies.) When we are sexually intimate, we bond physically, emotionally, AND spiritually. This was so we could

130 Casual sexual encounters can make the whole experience seem dirty and tainted and cause difficulty later on in a marriage relationship. 4. Relational reasons: Sex often leads to a breakdown in communication as it becomes the dominant theme of a relationship. At a time when a man and woman should be getting to know each other well and be developing the social, intellectual, and emotional aspects of their relationship, that process is cut short by the lack of communication and the focus on the physical. In addition, if a person knows his or her spouse was sexually active before marriage, he or she also knows comparisons are going to be made. There will always be concerns about how he or she compares to former lovers.

Breaking Soul Ties Breaking spiritual bonds with those that you have been intimate with in the past is critical in being able to bond completely with your spouse. With each person you have been physically intimate with, you can break those bonds through prayer:

Conclusion
When God says no to a particular activity, there is always the issue of protection behind it. God wants our marital sex to be an incredible blessing to us because thats what He designed it to be. Many times past sexual activity on the part of one or both partners keep marital sex from being all that God intended it to be. These issues then need to be healed on a spiritual, emotional, relational, and sometimes even physical level, before true marital oneness can be obtained. For some who become infected with STDs, there can be no complete physical healing.

Dear Heavenly Father, I know that it was sinful and offensive to You when I committed sexual immorality with ______________. I understand that by this sexual act I joined my spirit with ___________________s spirit. I ask that you forgive me and that You will break this spiritual union with __________________. Grant me spiritual freedom from _________________ and return my spirit to me. I ask that the blood of Jesus would cleanse my spirit as it returns to me. I pray that the door of sensual thought and action toward __________________ would be closed forever. Dear God, make me spiritually whole again. This I pray by faith and through the power of Jesus. Amen.
After you release the old, realize that God would have you receive the new, which is to be clothed in His righteousness:

For He has clothed me with garments of salvation and draped about me the robe of righteousness. Isaiah 61:10
