GENERAL DEFINITIONS

Wire Rope Slings Definitions

Working Load Limit (WLL)

Length Of Wire Rope Leg

The maximum load that can be applied to a sling or

component. May be de-rated for particular conditions of
use.

Soft eyes - 46 x rope dia. min.

Thimble eyes - 36 x rope dia. min.
Distance between ferrules - 12 x rope dia. min.

MBF

Hand-spliced Slings

Minimum Breaking Force as defined by Australian

Standards. The minimum breaking force of wire rope,
chain or any lifting component as shown in the breaking
force tables of each relevant Standard or Specification.

Min. E/L of 70 x rope dia.

Conversions

Strop

In order to convert kN into tonnes divide by 9.81.

Inspections
All Lifting / Safety Equipment should be visually inspected
for any noticeable signs of damage, prior to use by
operator.
Bullivants recommends all Lifting / Safety Equipment
be serviced and recertified every 3-6 months, subject to
frequency of use or applicable standard. Bullivants offers
colour code system for periodic inspections. Contact
Bullivants Technical Services team for a proposal.

WLL of handspliced slings cannot be calculated from

information provided on this chart. Contact your local
Bullivants branch for expert advice.
Strop is the general term of a double part wire rope sling

Internal Length Of Soft Eyes

Generally 12 x Rope dia. min.
NOTE: For safe lifting practices refer to AS1666.2 Wire
Ropes - care & use.

This RIGCHECK card has been produced as a guide only based on manufacturers specifications and Australian Standards.
Bullivants accepts no responsibility should any product fail in service based on information within this card.

Loading in sling leg

All multi-leg slings exert a horizontal

component of force, which increases
as the included angle becomes greater.

Example of Variation
of sling leg loading with
leg angle for a load of 10t.

No sling should be used if the included

angle exceeds 120, as beyond this point
the forces in the legs drastically increase,
as indicated in the diagram.

HORIZONTAL FORCE

HORIZONTAL FORCE

10 tonnes
DO NOT USE MULTI-LEG SLINGS AT ANGLES GREATER THAN 120

Angles of less than 30 (included) should also be avoided as these can lead to the load becoming unstable.

Shackles - AS2741
Alloy Bow & DEE type Shackles, Quality Grade S (Screw pin & safety pin Available)
