Spring 2013 Class Descriptions


Includes any supply or materials fee and/or curriculum needed (Alphabetical order by day offered)

WEDNESDAY CLASSES:
AMERICAN LIT/COMP This 2nd semester of one-year course will fulfill the high school
requirements for the literature and composition portion of language arts. Students will read classic literature from American authors, and use study guides for comprehension questions and vocabulary, also working on various forms of composition with several essay requirements. Materials Fee: $10. (Study guides will be emailed and required books will be determined by teacher and enrolled students will be notified)

COOKING WITH KIDS In this one semester class, students will have a blast cooking all sorts
of goodies and learn how to measure wet/dry ingredients as well as safety measures. Emphasis will be on keeping neat while cooking, and they will love learning that they too can cook. Final project is to have the kids cook their family a meal. Supply Fee $35. (includes class apron).

DRAMA Students will learn acting and singing, and will practice and perform at the end of the
semester. Music CD & Script Fee: $10.

FAMILY/CONSUMER SCIENCE (HOME EC) This one semester class will be a practical
introduction course to cooking, which includes nutrition, meal management, and etiquette. If we have enough students and a home to host it, the final project will be a dinner party that pulls together all aspects studied during the semester. Supply Fee: $30. Required curriculum: Textbook and Lab manual from A Beka

PRE-ALGEBRA & ALGEBRA 1 TUTORING Experienced math teacher will be able to


tutor and help with assignments and whiteboard explanations for both levels of math. (Pre-Algebra & Algebra 1 one-year courses will be offered in the Fall).

SPEECH This semester course is an introduction to the study of the communication process
with an emphasis on effective public communication, and includes intensive practice in public speaking, reasoning, critical thinking, and critical listening as well as effective use and understanding of written and spoken forms of communication. This course will effectively prepare students for the Speech 101 course they will be required to take in college. Materials Fee: $10.

WORLD GEOGRAPHY 2nd semester of one-year course will provide a survey of both
geographic principles and study of every country of the world through a regional approach. Students will "travel" from continent to continent around the world, studying the cultures, land forms, climates, resources, economy, religions, and government of each country. Supply Fee: $10. THURSDAY CLASSES:
CREATIVE WRITING (Jr. High & High School Level) This course is taught by college
writing professor with over 18 years of teaching experience, and will encourage students to write descriptively, in poetic forms, vignettes, and a short story. Students will have the opportunity to learn vocabulary and writing techniques, literary terms, tropes and schemes. High school students will have additional research and reading that can easily be done online or with library resources. Supply Fee: $TBD Curriculum: Student packet from teacher through supply fee

GARDEN CLUB This is a continuation of a class adapted from Apologia Botany curriculum, and will
focus on learning the basics about plants and growing a garden. Supply Fee: $25.

GUITAR (3rd- 5th & 6th-12th) A wonderful teacher with 27 years teaching in the valley will teach
students how to play guitar at beginner level, with the option of playing in a recital at the end of semester. All students must bring a guitar to class.

HANDS ON SCIENCE Join us for an exciting class where 3rd-6th grade students will have fun
learning! Some topics to be covered are: Electrical circuits, animal adaptations, a clam dissection, ecosystems, levers and matter. Students will be learning through Books, hands-on science experiments each week, crafts and other fun activities! Supply fee: $15.

I CAN SPANISH A basic introduction to learning the Spanish language in fun and creative
ways. All curriculum and worksheets provided. Supply Fee: $15.

SEWING (1-1/2 Hour Class) This is a one semester class. 5th-8th grade students will make a
pillow case, pajama pants and bag as the minimum requirement, and there will be more projects depending on efficiency in the student's ability. (Any students who have taken my class will make a project agreed upon by teacher and student). High-schoolers taking this class for elective credit will follow the A Beka curriculum so that a curriculum may be submitted to your ISP. High school projects will include a skirt, blouse, sewing craft, and other projects. Adults may choose to learn to sew by either method. Supply fee $20. and all students need to bring a sewing machine to class; also a supply list will be given at registration

SPANISH 1 & 2 Tutoring Experienced Spanish teacher will tutor in the Spanish language at
both levels and help with assignments, as well as work with conversation. (Spanish 1 & 2 one-year courses will be offered in the Fall).

VOICE CLASS Voice lessons will be taught by a teacher with 27 years of experience More

WIGGLERS BOOK PARTY Yes, Reading can be FUN! We will do this through drawing,
singing, crafts, snacks, making collages, or acting out the story with puppets. We will play rhyming games and create poems using Story Dice or a group idea for inspiration. Kids, come join the creativity! Supply fee: $10

ZOOLOGY 1 Part 2 of a one-year course, exploring the dynamics of flight and animal classification,
learning about birds, bats, insects, doing experiments and keeping a field journal. Supply Fee: $25. Curriculum required: Apologia Exploring Creation with Zoology 1 "Flying Creatures of the 5th Day" (2009) Student Text - ISBN: 978-1-932012-61-3
