Growing Up PowerPoint

Lesson Content: The lesson will begin with a student-led discussion about whether they want to grow up or do they want be a child forever or not. Students will be shown examples such as a few graphics from Carlo Collodis Pinocchio where Pinocchio does what sounds appealing and what he wants to do, ignoring Gepetto, his father, and Jiminy Cricket, his conscious. Students will also be shown a scene from the Peter Pan musical where the children claim and sing that they never want to grow up. Before selecting books, students will write a response to the writing prompt in their journals: Is it more difficult to be a kid or an adult? Instructional Procedures: Direct students to sit at the tables where their journals are (should be about 3-4 students per table). Brain teaser (I am soft to touch like a peach, colored beige, covers land, mostly made out of sand. What am I? Desert), which will already be written on board, will be read and then students will be given some time to answer. They will be given a hint if necessary. Prior to starting the presentation, students will be informed where the graphic novels are typically located in the library. Students are encouraged to ask questions before, during, and after the presentation.

Throughout the lesson, oral checks will be made to ensure that the students understand the content and theme of several pages of Pinocchio. This will be done through informal comments or formal questions. Students will be shown the Youtube video clip from the Peter Pan musical. Students will respond to the writing prompt in their journals based on their own experiences and based on the material presented to them (Pinocchio and Peter Pan). Is it more difficult to be a kid or an adult? Explain why. If you had a chance to never grow up (like in Neverland in Peter Pan), what would you do? Depending on how much time is available, they will also have an opportunity to borrow their books. They will need to first finish writing
