LESSON PLAN COMPONENTS GENERAL INFORMATION Lesson Plan Title: Virtual Parts of a Microscope Related Curricular Area: Science

Appropriate Grade Level(s): High School, 9 12 Required Time: 40 - 60 minutes Collaborative Potential: Special Educators, Science Overview: Students will learn the parts of a microscope by completing an interactive online activity with a virtual microscope and a group quiz to label the parts of a microscope. Students will also view different slide samples virtually that they may otherwise be unable to view in class. CONTENT TOPIC Science Parts of a Microscope Slide Samples CONNECTION TO CONTENT STANDARD(S) Common Core Standard(s) New York: CC6-8RS/TS4 Determine the meaning of symbols, key terms, and other domain-specific words and phrases as they are used in a specific scientific or technical context relevant to grades 6-8 texts and topics. AASL STANDARDS FOR THE 21ST CENTURY LEARNER GOALS 1.1.6 Read, view, and listen for information presented in any format (e.g., textual, visual, media, digital) in order to make inferences and gather meaning. 2.4.3 Recognize new knowledge and understanding. ASSESSMENT & CRITERIA Product: Students will complete the step-by-step tour on the virtual microscope, explore the microscope on their own, and view additional slide samples on another website. TL will consider students successful if they are able to accomplish the above task with some assistance. Process: TL will observe students during the lesson and review Checklists on the virtual microscopes completeness and accuracy. TL will explain the lesson and task for today. (Students will be using the microscopes in class over the next few weeks important to learn the different parts and how to use them). Modeling and Guided Practice: Students, TL, and classroom teacher (CT) will complete the virtual microscope online activity (SM4) (http://www.udel.edu/biology/ketcham/microscope/scope.html) together going through the step-by-step tour. Independent Practice: Students will have the opportunity to explore the virtual microscope further (SM4) and examine additional slides. Students will explore other slide samples online at http://www.kbears.com/sciences/microscope.html (SM2). Sharing and Reflecting: TL will access the Identifying Microscope Parts online activity (SM3) (http://www.austincc.edu/biocr/1406/laba/microscope/index.html) on the SMART Board and have volunteers come up to complete the quiz.
