8 ControlLogix Redundancy Module

The 1756-RM module lets you commission the redundant system in a plug-and-play manner without any programming. You connect a 1756-RM module pair with the default configuration in the redundant chassis pair and set up the redundant system with a communication cable. You are not required to develop any programming to allow a 1756-L6x controller to migrate to a redundant system from a nonredundant system. Controller programs can input to the 1756-RM modules management of redundancy states. You can apply power to the chassis pair either simultaneously or sequentially. You can also set up the system by inserting a 1756-RM module pair in an already powered-up chassis pair containing redundancy compliant modules or inserting redundancy compliant modules, in a powered-up chassis pair containing only a 1756-RM module. Once you have set up your redundancy configured hardware containing a chassis pair, a 1756-RM module pair and other redundancy compliant modules, and you have applied power, no further tasks are required in the 1756-RM module to activate redundancy in the system. The 1756-RM modules automatically determine the operation state of each of the chassis pair and are ready to accept commands and provide system monitoring.

Before You Begin

Before you install the module, make sure you: know how to handle the module. See Preventing Electrostatic Discharge on page 6. understand redundant systems and redundant media. For additional information, see the ControlLogix Redundancy System User Manual, publication 1756-UM523.

Installation Requirements
When you assemble the primary and secondary chassis for redundancy, you assemble them just as you would any ControlLogix chassis, except that for redundancy you need to assemble two identical chassis. Specifically, these items must match: Primary and secondary (redundant) control chassis, with all modules in the exact same order (slot for slot) Firmware revisions of all module partners
IMPORTANT

If the primary and secondary (redundant) systems are not assembled identically, and are not comprised of modules with matching firmware revisions, the 1756-RM module cannot qualify the secondary chassis to the primary chassis. If you are adding redundancy to an already operational ControlLogix system, shut off your process to install the 1756-RM module and designate the primary system. You may also have to use RSNetWorx software to configure keeper information in the secondary ControlNet communication module if the master keeper for ControlNet communication is in the primary chassis. You may also need to enable redundancy in your RSLogix 5000 software application and remove any I/O modules from the chassis.

ControlLogix Redundancy Module 11

Configuring a Redundancy Installation

You configure a redundant system by using two ControlLogix chassis labeled as Chassis A and Chassis B. Each module in Chassis A (including the 1756-RM module) must be partnered by a compatible module in the same slot in Chassis B. You connect the redundant pair with a communication cable. For more information on permitted configurations, refer to these publications: ControlLogix Enhanced System Redundancy Release Notes, publication 1756-RN650. ControlLogix/ProcessLogix Standard Redundancy Release Notes publication 1756-RN628. You connect each partnered communication module in either chassis to the same or different networks depending on the communication module type. ControlNet communication modules can be connected to the same network while Ethernet communication modules can be connected to either the same subnet or different subnets. This system configuration of modules in dual chassis is called a redundant chassis pair (RCP).

Module Placement and Partnering

You can place modules in any slot order within the control chassis, but the 1756-RM module enforces these positioning rules: The 1756-RM module pair must occupy the same slots in their respective chassis. The 1756-RM module pair does not consider the chassis pair to be partnered if the 1756-RM modules are placed in different slots, even if the partners of other modules are present in the same slot.

Publication 1756-IN092B-EN-P - July 2008

12 ControlLogix Redundancy Module Each pair of ControlLogix controllers and communication modules must be comprised of compatible partner modules. Two modules in the same slot are considered as compatible partners only if they contain compatible hardware and firmware and other rules that may be enforced by the module itself. The compatibility status (Compatible or Incompatible) is determined by either the module in the primary chassis or its partner in the secondary chassis. The 1756-RM module prevents certain redundancy operations, such as Qualification, if incompatible modules reside in the redundant-control chassis pair.

Install the Primary and Redundant Modules

Place a 1756-RM module in corresponding slots in the primary and redundant chassis. For example, if you place a module in slot five of the primary chassis, you must place the second module in slot five of the redundant chassis.
WARNING

When you insert or remove the module while backplane power is on, an electrical arc can occur. This could cause an explosion in hazardous location installations. Be sure that power is removed or the area is nonhazardous before proceeding. Repeated electrical arcing causes excessive wear to contacts on both the module and its mating connector. Worn contacts may create electrical resistance that can affect module operation.

1. Align the circuit board with top and bottom guides in the chassis. 2. Slide the module into the chassis, making sure the module backplane connector properly connects to the chassis backplane. The module is properly installed when it is flush with other installed modules.
IMPORTANT

To remove the module, push down on the locking clips at the top right and bottom left of each module. Slide the module out of the chassis.

ControlLogix Redundancy Module 13

Redundancy Module Cable

The network connections are made by using an LC single-mode style duplex fiber connector assembly.
ATTENTION

The 1756-RM module contains a single-mode transmitter. Connecting this module to a multi-mode port will damage any multi-mode devices. Under certain conditions, viewing the optical port may expose the eye to hazard. When viewed under some conditions, the optical port may expose the eye beyond the maximum permissible-exposure recommendations.

ATTENTION

The cable connection is made at the bottom of the module in a downward orientation. There is enough space between the transmit and receive connectors so you can use the LC connector coupler. Using this coupler keeps the fiber-optic cable from bending so you can connect and disconnect the cable without removing the module from the chassis. Fiber cable catalog numbers available are the 1756-RMC1 (1 m, 3.28 ft); 1756-RMC3 (3 m, 9.84 ft); and 1756-RMC10 (10 m, 32.81 ft).

Connect the Fiber-optic Communication Cable

Follow this procedure to install the communication cable.
ATTENTION

The redundancy module communication cable contains optical fibers. Avoid making sharp bends in the cable. Install the cable in a location where it will not be cut, run over, abraded, or otherwise damaged.

1. Remove the black protective plug on the first redundancy module in the redundant chassis pair. 2. Remove the protective caps from the cable. Publication 1756-IN092B-EN-P - July 2008

14 ControlLogix Redundancy Module 3. Attach an LC connector coupler. Using the coupler keeps the fiber-optic cable from bending so you can connect and disconnect the cable without removing the module from the chassis. 4. Plug the cable connector into the redundancy module.
TIP

The connectors on the cable and the module are keyed for correct installation.

Optical Power Budget

You can determine the maximum optical-power budget in decibels (dB) for a fiber-optic link by computing the difference between the minimum transmitter-output optical power (dBm avg) and the lowest receiver sensitivity (dBm avg). The optical-power budget provides the necessary optical-signal range to establish a working fiber-optic link. You must account for the cable lengths and the corresponding link penalties. All penalties that affect the link performance must be accounted for within the link optical power budget. Optical Power Budget Ranges

Designate the Primary Chassis and Qualify the System

Once you assemble the chassis, you must designate the primary chassis. Usually, the first chassis you apply power to is the primary chassis. After you have applied power, qualify the system so that all module pairs are at compatible firmware-revision levels.
ATTENTION

Do not apply power to the chassis until you have read the instructions for designating the primary chassis. Applying power to the chassis is crucial to designating the primary and secondary chassis. Do not attempt to designate a primary chassis before loading in an application image. Refer to Flash Upgrade the Modules on page 17 before you designate the primary chassis and qualify the system.

Designating the Primary Chassis

The chassis that you apply power to first is automatically designated as the primary chassis. The 1756-RM module displays PRIM on the modules four-character display to acknowledge that this chassis is the primary control chassis. If both modules have power applied to them simultaneously, the module with the lowest serial number is designated as the primary chassis and displays PRIM on the modules four-character display. In addition, the PRI status indicator on the primary 1756-RM module is green. The secondary chassis displays either DISQ or SYNC, depending on the state of the secondary chassis. In addition, the PRI status light on the secondary 1756-RM module is not illuminated.

Publication 1756-IN092B-EN-P - July 2008

ControlLogix Redundancy Module 19

Conversion from a Nonredundant to a Redundant Configuration

You can upgrade the standalone chassis to a redundant chassis pair, by inserting a 1756-RM module in the standalone chassis and setting up an identical chassis with compatible modules (including the 1756-RM module) in the same slot as the standalone chassis. If the partnered chassis, containing nonredundant modules or nonredundancy compliant firmware, is designated as the secondary chassis, it will stop functioning.

Qualify the System

When you first apply power to the designated primary and secondary chassis, the redundant system begins to qualify them. During qualification, the primary modules are compared with the secondary module partners to verify that the hardware and firmware are compatible.
If the 1756-RM module displays SYNC after the chassis has been started and qualified. DISQ Important: The secondary 1756-RM module initially displays DISQ until it completes the qualification process. This may take 13 minutes. Then The chassis configuration and the firmware revision levels are compatible. A issue exists: with the chassis configuration. with incompatible firmware-revision levels between the primary and secondary modules. See Flowchart of Starting a Chassis with a Healthy 1756-RM Module on page 20. if the ControlNet-module partners Keeper parameters are not the same. if the ControlNet MAC IDs are not set to the same node address.

The 1756-RM module may clear some minor recoverable faults on its own. Minor Nonrecoverable The fault does not stop redundancy operations. No recovery mechanism is available. Major Recoverable The fault impacts redundancy operations, although the effect may not be immediate. For example, if the fault occurred in the secondary 1756-RM module, it may not affect control until the primary 1756-RM module fails. Major Nonrecoverable This is a critical fault. Redundancy operations will cease. A switchover may occur. No recover mechanism is available. The module may need to be replaced.

All fault types are logged in the 1756-RM modules event log, which is stored in nonvolatile memory. You can access the event log through the configuration tool, refer to the ControlLogix Controllers Users Manual, publication 1756-UM523.
