Design and Politics #5 - Regions in Transition. Designing for Adaptivity 010 Publishers 2012 ISBN 9789064507892 Acqn 21133 Hb 17x24cm 224pp 80ills 70col 21 Dutch spatial planning is being shaken up by shifting roles among governments and a troubled market. More and more tasks are being tackled at a regional scale. This means that regions will have to shape their own perspectives on how they are to develop spatially. They must create distinguishing narratives that pick up on global trends and local initiatives. This volume provides guidelines for developing regional planning narratives. Contributors address the issue of how regions can give shape to their own spatial development in a way that is of value for the Netherlands as a whole.

This generation of students seems to naturally engage the reality of the everyday, and their designs can be taken as starting points for sensible interventions. The work of 25 graduates in architecture, urbanism and landscape architecture is presented in this volume, covering a wide variety of projects and solutions. A foreword by Oxenaar and text by visiting critic Rob Hootsmans lend insight to the students hard work and perspectives.

Joined by other prominent modernist architects in Prague, the group was active into the 1980s. Despite difficult political circumstances, SIAL gained recognition both at home and among Western architects. This book looks at the work of the Liberec collective in its full scope. The first three chapters, presenting SIALs production from the 60s, 70s and 80s, are followed by an analysis of 25 of their most important projects and buildings, as well as profiles of the most prominent SIAL architects, with a supplement comprising almost 500 reproductions.

A Photographic Portrait of a Landscape - New Dimensions in Landscape Philosophy Jap Sam 2012 ISBN 9789490322373 Acqn 21617 Pb 16x22cm 270pp 200ills 100col 21 A Photographic Portrait of a Landscape is a micro study that explores cultural centres and land ownership. The expansion of the European Union has been accompanied by a growing interest in national identity, which uses landscape as a projection screen for envisaged expectations. The theories of Ton Lemaire (Filosofie van het landschap,1970) and the post-colonial approach to culture of Homi K. Bhabha (The Location of Culture, 1994) are our guides on a journey through a landscape in the north of the Netherlands. Pietsie Feenstra's (Sorbonne Nouvelle, Paris III) essay on cultural history takes us on a filmic journey through a terp landscape in the Dutch province of Friesland, interpreting and uncovering its secrets by sifting through photographic images and delving into archives. She was inspired by an album of photos from 1978 that show the Frisian village of Wjelsryp. The visual essay by Wapke Feenstra (myvillages.org) is a collation of recent landscape photos, photos taken by local residents, poetry, information about the land, and a grass herbarium. The landscape is presented from the perspective of the local dweller.

Since founding T.O.P. (Turn On Planning) office in the 1970s, Belgian architect and artist Luc Deleu has been working on a critical, sociological and ecological approach to urbanism that he has named orbanism: an eco-centric global urbanism that has anticipated such contemporary concerns as environmental pollution, overpopulation, food production and the conflict between the individual and the community. Orban Space traces Deleus work and practice through a conceptual topography defined by seven terms: architecture, imitation, depiction, sculpture, scale, mobility and manifesto. Each term will be dealt with in a critical text and visual essay by seven authors and seven artists: John Macarthur, Maarten Delbeke, Stefaan Vervoort, Felicity D. Scott, Wouter Davidts, Teresa Stoppani, Guy Chtel, Marjolijn Dijkman, UP (Koenraad Dedobbeleer & Kris Kimpe), Manfred Pernice, Luc Deleu, Kersten Geers, Metahaven, Aglaia Konrad.

It presents a socio-spatial relationship that emerges from various perspectives, including an urban analytic return to the most important lessons learned from 20th century urban development. Through a European context examining cities such as Amsterdam, Barcelona, Hamburg, Berlin, Krakow, Dublin and Malm it demonstrates that work is being accomplished via many strategies and tools for developing urban spatial quality, and features texts by such notable writers as Jane Jacobs, Richard Sennett, Umberto Eco and Henri Lefebvre.

Remediate Reuse Recycle a+t Ediciones 2012 ISBN 9788461560202 Acqn 21960 Pb 24x32cm 312pp col ills 55 With this first instalment of the 'Reclaim' series, a+t interprets the works analysed and organises its discourse on the basis of Re-actions, using these actions to create a body of knowledge applicable to any project. The actions are classified into three Re-processes: Remediate (acting on the territory), Reuse (acting on the building) and Recycle (acting on the material). 'Reclaim' has the environmental sense to reclaim the territory, objects, infrastructures and materials, yet it is also a call to reclaim dignity and citizens' rights. In short, it is a wake-up call to morally reclaim society, using the Re-processes as atonement.

At these roadside complexes travellers and trade convoys could find shelter, rest and safety, equivalent to modern-day inns. They are frequently found along the Persian Empire's Royal Road, part of the larger ancient network of trade routes supporting the flow of commerce, information, and people across Asia, North Africa, and south-eastern Europe. The structures are magnificently photographed, accompanied by short descriptions and location coordinates.

For him, the wall is the pivotal supporting element in a building, and therefore stone is the most important building material. Yet the design for the seven-storey laboratory envisaged an almost transparent structure with three brick stele in the entrance foyer by artist Pedro Cabrita Reis. This monographic publication explores this apparent contradiction with an essay on the building by architect Akos Moravanszky, plus a text about the artwork by art historian Jacqueline Burchkardt and photographs by Paolo Rosselli.

Central to the submissions, and especially to their presentation and explanation, is the concept of the architectural studio as hybrid research space, one open to collaboration, cross-disciplinary investigation, and analysis and development of techniques. This encourages, for instance, questioning the relationship between engineering sciences and architectural design, between applied and artistic practice. Detailed, forwardlooking, and inspiring.

The Undivided City presents a kind of horizontal archaeology, an observation of the effects of a policy instrument in which population groups are distributed through the city; an adverse effect being that human behaviour is normalised, resulting in uniformity. It focuses on the shifting borders between individual users of the urban space and the planned environment. Schoemaker walks straight lines through the city, thereby creating layers in which various urban facets are determined and analysed.

Their approach is increasingly trans-disciplinary: architects utilize media and supports typical of the arts, while artists investigate urban realities in three-dimensional architectural installations.
