Accor shared the news on November 28 of their brand revitalization plans for ibis. Going forward their economy hotels will keep the name ibis, however their budget economy hotels known as Formule 1 will now be called ibis budget and their premium economy hotels known as All Seasons will now be called ibis Styles. hat would you do if you were lost in the jungle
unintentionally extended his worship to Shiva. It was getting dark when Lubdaka realized that he had entered deep into the jungle, and it was too dark for the hunter to go any further. Worried about the wild animals that roamed the forest, he decided to climb up a tree. Night fell and Lubdaka got sleepy but he tried to stay alert. He worried that if he fell asleep he would fall from the tree and become prey to the wild beasts. So in order to stay awake, he picked leaves from the tree one by one and dropped them to the ground. When he looked down, to his astonishment below the tree was a lingam, the symbol of the Lord Shiva. In addition, that time happened to be the night of Shiva, known as Shivaratri. This accidental worshipping became very signicant to Lubdakas adventure. It is told that later when he died, the god of death ordered his subjects to send Lubdaka to hell. However, before
his soul reached hell, the Lord Shiva came to his rescue and freed him. This was all because Lubdaka had worshiped Shiva during the night of Shivaratri, which meant he had also carried out the rituals of redemption.

But can technology really save us from all our difculties, answer all our questions, and keep us from getting lost? Being lost in the jungle is much easier to overcome than being lost in our mind. What happens when the Mpu Tanakung, a sage who lived during the age of the Kediri kingdom in the 10th century, wrote a story about being lost and discovering a way of attaining redemption. The story is about Lubdaka, a hunter who got lost in the forest and
RITUALS OF SHIVARATRI
The great work of the sage named Shivaratri Kalpa became the pivot point for the rituals of Shivaratri centuries later. Shivaratri falls on the seventh month of the Saka calendar, which coincides with January on the Gregorian calendar. It is also known as Panglong sasih kapitu or Eve of the New Moon. This night is believed to be the darkest of all nights in the whole year. From the tale of Mpu Tanakung, it can be concluded that three main points must be carried out staying awake the whole night, and refraining from conversation. These three things are what Lubdaka had endured that night. Yet those three things are not

One thing that has gone off track recently is that the Shivaratri rituals usually lack the monabrata, or refraining from speech aspect. On the contrary, religious teachers and leaders are invited to provide Shivaratri discourse or give religious or moral lectures. Differing from other religious holidays in Bali, there are no offerings during Shivaratri. It has become a general presumption that during holidays, various banten or offerings of different types and sizes are made from coconut leaves, owers and fruits. However, on the night of Shiva, Hindus usually only present a single canang ower offering a return to the most basic offering as stated in the holy book Bhagawadgita: incense, ower and water. In Hindu mythology, Shiva is considered the destroyer. In relation to the concept of Tri Murti or three main pillars, Shiva is not only the destroyer but He is also the force that brings back the universe to its basic form, which is emptiness. What came from the void returns to the void. The night of Shiva is believed to relieve oneself of ones sins. Not absolute requirements. There are three levels that can be chosen by Balinese Hindus in celebrating the night, according to their own capabilities. The rst level is by staying awake the whole night. The second is fasting for a whole day and night. The third level, which is also the most difcult, is to also keep silent and refrain from conversation the entire night. Balinese Hindus carry out the ritual in groups. Students celebrate the night at their schools. Meanwhile, adults generally celebrate at temples or in their own households. Villagers, in coordination from their banjar communal groups, usually ock to the village temples. everyone believes that sins can be diminished or removed, but those who believe so consider Shivaratri a night of redemption. At the very least, if we have an entire night of silent contemplation and selfintrospection, we will be less likely to repeat the same acts of sin in the future. By Ni Luh Dian Purniawati

According to East Area Manager Pramudya Bevan, their main idea in teaching the Espresso Expert course is to offer participants a wider view of both the theoretical and practical elements of coffee making, and to spread the culture of Italian coffee, especially since there are so many different perceptions about espresso and Italian coffee. Another reason is for the love of the coffee, of course!

a budding entrepreneur and myself (coffee enthusiast disguised as journalist). The class was small less than 20 people and there was no rigid classroom feel whatsoever. It actually felt more like a friendly conversation. We spent most of the rst day learning about the history of coffee in general, the history and specics of illy coffee, the habits and customs related to coffee, the physiological effects of coffee, coffee botany, basic and advanced espresso making and understanding the grinders, coffee machines, and parameters necessary for making a truly superb espresso. It was a lot of information, delivered via a Power
Point presentation, but necessary in order to have a good foundation. It was not until after lunch and later in the afternoon that we were able to get our anxious hands on the espresso machine. I dont know why this surprised me, but getting that tiny cup of espresso just right is a lot harder than it looks. At Udc they encouraged us to try, try, and try some more, and were in no way stingy regarding this matter. At one point I looked across the room only to see tables covered with cups upon cups of cappuccinos sacriced for the sake of helping us learn. Some cups looked lopsided with too much foam, some didnt taste quite right, and some had the

wrong espresso and foam ratio. But they made us practice our milk texturing and pouring until we improved with each and every cup. On the second day we continued practicing our espresso making skills. A good espresso is the base for many other drinks, so we werent allowed to proceed until everyone felt comfortable with all the required steps. They worked with us one-on-one to correct our mistakes in my case it was that I wasnt tamping enough. When I found a way to x this I managed to produce a cup with a beautiful aroma and tigerskin appearance. Success! After some more espresso
and cappuccino practice, we learned about various kinds of ice cappuccino, from shakarato to fredo to frappe, then rounded off the day with coffee art. I thoroughly enjoyed my two-day course with Udc dell Indonesia. In my opinion, what makes the course fun is the casual atmosphere and the fact that you dont have to have previous experience. The fee to attend Udc dell Indonesia includes all lunches, coffee breaks, snacks, and a certicate but does not include travelling expenses and hotel accommodation. I recommend Udc dell Indonesia for all coffee lovers in Indonesia,

Deborah Cayetano started these pop-up dinners in 2012 as a way to eliminate the problem of dining for one, while creating a way to meet new like-minded people. The other

It is an opportunity to expose their talents to the community at a more personal level, while drawing visitors to the many luxury properties on the island. Since Balis Best Chefs started, all the locations have been magical; the most recent dinner being on the cliffs
of Pecatu. It was the fourth dinner ever, taking place at The Edge, a spectacular property in the southern tip of Bali. The Edges Chef Giles Greenwood presented a fantastic six-course menu including Carpaccio of Fois Gras with Figs, Walnuts & Trufed Brioche as a starter, and Beef Cheek & Fillet with Local Garlic Snails Parsnip & Beef Tea as one of the main courses. The meal ended with a choice of six desserts and everything was paired beautifully

Its been over 14 years since I started my Hypnotherapy practice. I have always been very curious about the human mind and wanted to understand why people are they way they are. For more than 30 years I have learned many different methods of healing from different teachers, but have found that Hypnotherapy and Transpersonal healing have been the most effective ones that I can use to assist clients in overcoming their recurring physical, emotional, spiritual and relationship issues. How long have you lived in Bali? Why did you decide to move to Bali after practicing in so many places around Asia? After living overseas for 18 years, I decided to settle down in Bali. I moved here in January 2007. I chose Bali because Bali has always been a very special place for me. The rst time I came to Bali was in 1974. I fell in love with the place, the friendly people and their unique tradition as soon as I arrived here. Since then I have always dreamt of living in Bali. I have also chosen Bali as the base for my practice, because it is a great tourist destination, and people from all over the world know Bali. It is very convenient for my clients to come to Bali to see me because it has all the facilities that a visitor would need to stay comfortably. How do people hear about your practice and what countries do they come from? Could you please explain what Hypnotherapy and Transpersonal Healing entails? Our subconscious mind is like a super computer within us. All our life experiences whether good or bad are imprinted and stored within it. These imprints become our internal representation. Negative imprints are like viruses in a computer that create havoc in the system. Most of our physical, emotional, and mental problems in life are created by these. Hypnotherapy is one of the fastest and most effective methods of healing we can use to access our subconscious mind to change these Most of my clients know me through recommendation from previous clients or they have found my website on the Internet and made the effort to come to Bali to see me. They are of different nationalities from all over the world. negative imprints. Transpersonal Healing involves healing the Body, Mind and Spirit. Some of the techniques used in Transpersonal Healing involve Past Life Regression, Future Progression, Forgiveness Therapy and Omega Therapy. The latter two are techniques that I have developed through the experiences I have had with clients. Forgiveness Therapy assists in releasing ones painful past, which can negatively affect one physically, emotionally and mentally. It is very effective for stress, anger, and depression cases. Omega Therapy helps us to balance, accept, and love our self.

Tell us why you decided to start the Blue Light Health and Wellness Sanctuary at the Natures View Resort in Singapadu? Why did you choose this specic location? For ten years, it has been my dream to start a place where people from all over the world can come for complete holistic treatments in one place. I chose Singapadu because it is a quiet and peaceful place, a rural village away from the trafc jams and the busy tourist places, but can easily be reached. It is only 40 minutes from Ngurah Rai International Airport, 15 minutes from Sanur and 15 minutes from Ubud. What kind of facilities will the Blue Light Health and Wellness Sanctuary provide? In the main house we have four
bedroom suites, two bedrooms by the 28 meter long swimming pool and one wooden villa with two bedrooms, a caf by the pool that serves organic food and drinks, a dining room in the main house, practice rooms, and one large meeting room for seminars and workshops. When we open in March this year, we are aiming to provide full service such as Wi-Fi, pick up service from the airport, car hire with driver, laundry, spa, and restaurant facilities. ow many times have you made a New Years resolution, only to break it a few weeks later? In my observation, people arent able to follow through with their resolutions because they arent serious
about them to begin with, or they aim for a goal so lofty they have no idea where to start to make it happen. This year, Im offering an easy and achievable resolution that I hope you will try: Sort through your clutter and give If youre human and not living an ascetic life, its only natural that you accumulate stuff. Even if you arent the hoarding type, piles will amass. You might stick them in plastic bags and hide them away in dark corners of closets or shove them under beds. Or perhaps youre so busy that the piles remain in plain sight, nagging at you every time you sit down to unwind. There is a simple solution to this. No need to call a certain number or haul your things to a specic donation center. In Bali, it is as easy as stepping outside your front door and offering them to one of your neighbors. I recently moved into a new place, and as I cleaned up and settled in I noticed I had double of a lot of useful things such as brooms and doormats. When I was about to toss out what I didnt need, the caretaker of the building stopped me midway. She told me she would happily take anything that I didnt need, if not to keep, then to give to people she knows. So remember to offer

around before you toss, especially if what you have is in good condition. This goes for big pieces too. After I moved I bought a shiny new wardrobe but wasnt sure what to do with my old one. It still looked great but was falling apart inside and because of this I wasnt sure if anyone would want it. When the delivery boys arrived with my new one, I tried offering it to them. To my surprise they were really excited, viewing it as a fun x-up project. Not only did I solve the problem of getting the heavy piece of furniture down three ights of stairs, but I also made some delivery boys very happy campers. You can give even if you are not living in Bali and are just here for holiday. A few years ago when I was backpacking with a friend, I found at the end of our trip that my backpack was super heavy due to the added weight of souvenirs and a semi-wet sarong and bathing suit. When I dug through my bag I noticed some clothes that I had hadnt worn at all and didnt see a reason to keep them as I hardly wore them back home either. The front desk of our little hostel on Poppies Lane was staffed only by young men, but when I timidly asked if any of them had a sister or cousin who might like to have my clothes, I immediately got an enthusiastic YES! in return. So dont be shy its okay to ask! If your offer is politely declined, then at least you tried. However, I am pretty sure that more often than not, your question of Do you know anyone who might like this? will be met with a wide and grateful grin. This lovely island gives us so much on a daily basis inspiration, hospitality, friendly smiles, and more. There are multitudes of ways to give back, whether grand gestures or small ones. How will you give back to Bali this year? Photographer Roxanne Streatfeild shows us the sea life around the Bio Wreck, a man-made structure created by Chris Brown, the owner and operator of Reef Seen Aquatics at Pemuteran Bay in Bali. The wreck has water currents passing through the metal structure, which stimulates coral growth. It already has considerable hard and soft coral growth over it only after a short period of time. The amount of sh that cascade in and around the articial reef is a testament to the success of this coral reef rejuvenation effort at Pemuteran Bay.

If you want to extend your adventures and dive some pristine reefs, organize a jukung and get the skipper to take you out along the coastline to experience the incredible underwater world that was created by the eruptions of Mount Agung.

Palung-Palung starts around the corner from the Dropoff, just a few minutes away. There you can dive a steep slope full of untouched hard and soft coral formations, from

wrasse, buttery and angelsh inhabit the area. The striking difference between the white sand bottom and the dozens of species of hard and soft corals in a glorious abundance of shades makes it unlike anything else in the area, good for both wide angle and macro photography. You do require some depth in order to get to the best of the life so be mindful of this and watch your gauges.

Cruising the warm blue waters of Tulamben by jukung is a fascinating and surreal experience, and can certainly become very addicting. can be found at Kiluan Bay: spinner dolphins (Stenella longirostris) and bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncattus). They live in warm tropical waters such as the Indian Ocean, and have chosen Kiluan Bay as a resting point between Semaka and Lampung Bay. The Kiluan Bay area is home to the residents of the Bandung Jaya hamlet, which is part of the village of Kelumbayan. About 200 families live in the area, consisting mostly of shermen and farmers.
iluan Bay, which is located in the Tanggamus regency of the Lampung province in South Sumatra, is
Ten years ago it was rare to see tourists at Kiluan Bay. The name of the area sounded foreign even to Lampung residents, so before the establishment of an ecotourism project named Cikal in 2005, Kiluan was an isolated area. Cikal, which is chaired by Riko Stefanus, has been instrumental in introducing the site to the outside world. Besides enjoying the breathtaking sight of wild dolphins swimming, jumping, and dancing around the bay on any given day, tourists can
not as well known as Lampung Bay in Bandarlampung, Tomini Bay in Central Sulawesi, or Lovina Beach in Bali. However, some tourists say that the Kiluan Bay dolphin dance is actually more exotic than the one at Lovina Beach, where only one species of dolphin is found. There are two dolphin species that

night, so I could get to Kiluan Bay by Saturday morning. At Merak Harbor we rested for a few hours while enjoying the beauty of the Sunda Strait port in the evening. Then we took a ferry from Merak Harbor to Bakauheni Harbor, which took about 3 hours. We spent the night on board the ferry, arriving at Bakauheni Harbor around 5 am. Then we continued to Canti Dock. Based on the information I had gotten, traveling to Kiluan Bay requires patience because of damaged and rocky roads. However, during the course of our one hour drive from Bakauheni Harbor to Canti Dock, I didnt nd the roads to be so bad. I subsequently learned that there
are two routes to Kiluan Bay from Bakauheni Harbor: over land or by sea. If I had picked the land route, which would have taken approximately 5 hours from Bakauheni Harbor, I might have come across the damaged roads like what many people warned about on the Internet. Luckily our party chose to go by land and sea (known as the sea route). Although it requires more time, the benet was that we could go through the waters off shore of the South Lampung regency. The next day, on the way to Kiluan Bay from Canti Dock, we stopped as some small islands. Most notable is Legundi Island, located northeast of Sebesi Island. From the

I had never had the chance to explore the beaches along the coast of Sumatra before, so thats why I was so excited to go to Kiluan Bay. For those of you who would like to go, I suggest traveling with a group. My friends and I set out from Jakarta on a Friday night. We left at 8 p.m. and it took about three hours to get to Merak Harbor. You can take a bus from Slipi, or if you are coming from the Soekarno Hatta Airport, it is better to go to terminal Kalideres and take a bus from there. I purposely chose to travel at

The trekking activities will provide you with picturesque pastoral scenes, clean water, fresh air, and a beautiful sky. Our journey continued west, and several times we saw groups of dolphins swimming not far from our boat. After three hours of sailing we arrived at Kiluan Bay. There, we went straight to Kelapa Island where we spent the afternoon enjoying the beautiful green sea and white sand. After exploring, prepare yourself for the majestic beauty of the sunset that will denitely take your breath away. As the sun moves into the western horizon, a tinge of red falls dramatically onto the sides of the hills. While your eyes feast on this magnicent parade of colors, you will be serenaded by the sound of waves roaring and birds chirping. Take it all in and dont forget to set up your camera to capture this inspirational moment. to meet the main attraction, the dancing dolphins. Taking a jukung (small boat), we departed from Kiluan Bay and out into the Sunda Strait. From about 7 a.m. we sat waiting anxiously but there were no signs whatsoever of any activity. We waited and waited and moved

On Sunday morning we got ready

the boat to several spots until nally the dolphins appeared, teasing the groups here and there. As if knowing they had an audience, the dolphins swam vigorously. To see the dolphins jump and dance in the wild gave me such a rush I was lled with wonder and joy. Many say that the number of dolphins in Kiluan Bay is the largest in Asia, even in the whole world. You might even be able to watch green turtles come up to the sea surface, checking out the commotion made by their dolphin friends and human guests. I realized immediately that this was an irreplaceable experience. THE LAGOON
There is a small lagoon located between the cliffs in the southern part of Kelapa Island. To get there you have to wear comfortable and sturdy shoes the track is long and full of steep terrain and huge rocks. After twenty minutes of working our way down the cliff, we arrived at the mesmerizing lagoon. Some of us

THE PAINTINGS OF BATUAN

ARMA Museum, Ubud is holding an exhibition of contemporary Batuan Paintings from the Baturulangun Artists Community, Batuan Bali. Batuan artists create paintings that show the everyday environment of their village, synthesized with images inspired by the spirit world. Batuan paintings are at once recognizable, and at the same time startling and surrealistic. The painters start with an empty page and build their paintings step by step into complex images. The opening of this exhibition was held in conjunction with the launching of the book Inventing Art, the paintings of Batuan Bali. The book consists of 337 pages and includes 327 full color reproductions, 24 illustrations, maps and diagrams. It was written and illustrated by long term Bali resident Bruce Granquist, and is published in ve colors by the renowned printing company CS Graphics in Singapore. The book was launched in an exhibition on December 15 with the Governor of Bali, the Honorable Made Mangku Pastika attending, and the exhibition will be open to the public until January 14. Bali is non-malarial and prophylaxis is not required. Mosquito bites, cuts or abrasions easily become infected in the tropics. Treat them immediately. Drink only bottled or boiled water. Peel fruit before eating; avoid raw vegetables except at reputable restaurants. Ice in restaurants is safe. Protect yourself from the intense equatorial sun. Use high SPF sunblock and a hat. AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases are increasing in Indonesia. Local sex workers have multiple partners from around the world. They are not checked for sexually transmitted diseases. Act responsibly and use condoms, available over the counter at pharmacies.
