Huskies-Cougars Battle For 275th Time
The 2012 Pac-12 champion Washington Huskies (8-5) begin its
title defense on Saturday against their cross-state rival Washing-
ton State Cougars (9-4). The 275th tilt between the two schools is
scheduled to tip at 6:30 p.m. PT in Pullman at Friel Court. It is rare
that the two rivals open their conference schedule against each
other, but it is not unprecedented; it will be the eighth time in the
last 40 years the teams have met in their conference opener. ES-
PNU will televise the Apple Cup of hoops with Dave Fleming and
Sean Parnham calling the action. Locally, the game will be broad-
cast across the IMG College Sports Network and KJR Sportsradio
950 AM and 102.9 FM with Bob Rondeau and Jason Hamilton
calling the action. In addition, Gregg Bell will host a live chat from
courtside at Friel Court.

with the Huskies winning the last time the two teams opened con-
ference action against each other in 2009. Last season, UW rallied

Coach Lorenzo Romar (11th Yr. at Washington, 17th Yr. Overall)
Now in his 11th season, Lorenzo Romar is coming off a year in which he won the 2012
Pac-12 Coach of the Year after guiding UW to a 14-4 conference record and Pac-12
regular season championship. It was the third time that Romar, the 18th head mens bas-
ketball coach at Washington, has earned Coach of the Year (also 2009 & 2005). Romar
is the dean of coaching in the Pac-12 having spent more seasons at UW than any other
current coach at their school. Romar owns a 227-118 (.658) record at Washington and
is 320-206 (.608) in 17 seasons overall. Romar reached several milestones during the
year including his 200th win as UWs coach, 300th overall coaching victory & 100th Pac-
12 conference win. The rst African-American head basketball coach at UW, Romar is
third all-time in victories at UW and reached 200 wins second fastest. Washington
has won its rst two outright conference titles (2012 & 2009) since 1953 under the direction of Romar. He has
led UW to six NCAA tournament Appearances -- all in spurts of three-consecutive seasons (2004-05-06 &
2009-10-11) -- and the schools rst back-to-back Sweet 16 appearances (2005 & 06). Overall, he has led Wash-
ington to three Sweet 16 appearances. In 2012 he led UW to the seminals of the NIT, a rst in UW history. He
was the 2005 Pac-10 and Black Coaches Association Coach of the Year. Romar played point guard for Marv
Harshmans 1979 and 1980 teams and spent ve years in the NBA after college. Prior to UW, Romar served as
the head coach at Saint Louis (1999-02) and Pepperdine (1996-99) and was an assistant coach at UCLA (1992-
96) - He helped lead the Bruins to the 1995 national title. A native of Compton, Calif., he graduated from Pius
X High School. Romar and his wife, Leona, have three daughters: Terra, Tavia and Taylor.
Unprecedented Success Under Romar
The Huskies are enjoying their greatest stretch of success in team history under the direction of Lorenzo Romar.
Besides three Sweet 16 appearances, three Pac-10 tournament championships, two regular-season conference
titles & a trip to the NIT seminals, the numbers show Romar has entered unchartered territory. Since 2004-
2005 -- Romars third season at UW -- the Huskies have won 190 games, the most ever in a eight-year span of
UW basketball history. He has avg 21.9 wins per season during his 10-year UW career and has amassed four
of the seven largest single-season win totals in UW history. Romar earned his sixth 20-win season in 2012, in-
cluding a school record four-consecutive seasons, and only trails Hec Edmundsons 11 seasons with 20+ wins.

Three-Point Prowess
The Huskies have a pair of long-range bombers that
are assaulting the Huskies record books. C.J. Wil-
cox is steadily climbing the UW three-point charts
and is up to third all-time in UW history with 170.
Next up is Deon Luton with 212. Scott Suggs is
nearing the all-time list too and has 109. Tenth on
the list is Terrence Ross with 116. When it comes
to accuracy, Suggs is 4th all-time in UW history at
41.4% (109-263). Wilcox is 8th in UW history mak-
ing 40.1% of his career attempts.
Gaddy Among Cousy Award Nominees
Senior Abdul Gaddy is among over 80 nominees
for the 2013 Bob Cousy Award, handed out annu-
ally to the nations top point guard. This watch list
of candidates will be narrowed down to a nal 20
around January 1st, nal 10 near February 1st, and
nal ve by approximately March 1st. The winner of
the 2013 Bob Cousy Award will be presented at the
Hall of Fames Class Announcement on Champion-
ship Monday in Atlanta as part of NCAA Final Four
weekend.
Reverse Trend in Rebounding
Washington has nished rst in the conference in
rebounding four-straight years, six of the last eight
and has nished rst or second in each of the last
eight seasons. If they are going to continue that
trend, the Huskies are going to have to hit the glass
in monumental proportions. So far this season, they
are 10th in the Pac-12 in rebounding with 36.2 per
game, which currently represents their lowest aver-
age since 2004. The biggest culprit in the reverse
trend is that UW is last in the league with 23.3 de-
fensive rebounds per game and they are only grab-
bing 65% of the rebounds when the other team is
on offense.
Wilcox Diversifying His Game
Everyone knows C.J. Wilcox can shoot from the
outside. Entering the season, statistically speaking,
it was easy to tell he prefered to re away from
outside the 3-point line. Entering the year, 56% of
his eld goal makes came from behind the 3-point
arc, while 61% of his FG attempts were 3-pointers.
He has diversied his game this year, according to
the stats. So far in his junior season, of Wilcoxs
eld goal makes, just 38% have come from beyond
3-point range and 45% of his attempts are 3-point-
ers. Despite moving closer to the rim, his scoring
average has gone up and not surprisingly, so has his
eld goal percentage. He is 46.6% this year after
entering the season as a 43% career shooter.
Huskies Sign Two To LOIs
Lorenzo Romar reeled in two of the nations top
guard recruits during the NCAA early signing pe-
riod. Darin Johnson of Sacramentos Sheldon
HS and Nigel Williams-Goss of Findlay Prep in
Henderson, Nev. both ofcially declared their inten-
tions of joining Washington for the 2013-14 season
by sending in their National Leters of Intent. John-
son is a 6-foot-4 guard that averaged 16.8 ppg and
2.5 assists as a junior at Franklin HS in Elk Grove,
Where UW ranks in the Conference
since Romar took over in 2002-03 ...

2012-13 Washington Mens Basketball Husky Notes
UW Leads Division I With Most All-Time Wins At Their Home Arena
Washington has 927 wins inside of Hec Edmundson Pavilion, the most by any Division I team at its cur-
rent home arena. The Huskies started playing in their arena on Dec. 27, 1927 and have amassed 100 more
victories than No. 2 on the list, Pennsylvania.
Friendly Connes Of Home
Losing at Alaska Airlines Arena in Hec Edmundson Pavilion is rare under coach Lorenzo Romars watch. In
11 years with Romar at the helm, UW is 153-31 (.832) overall at home, 82-9 (.901) in non-conference
games. UW was 18-2 at home in 2012, the 5th time under Romar that they have reached at least 17 wins
at home. The Huskies have won 15+ at home 18 times overall, but only two other times in the last 60 years
outside the Romar era.The Huskies won a school record 32 straight non-conference games at Alaska Airlines
Arena, dating back to a 72-71 home loss on March 14, 2008 in the College Basketball Invitational to Val-
paraiso, before South Dakota State beat them on Dec. 18, 2011.
Calif. He is the No. 86 player overall by Scout.com;
18th among shooting guards and No. 126 according to
Rivals.com. Williams-Goss, orignially from Happy Val-
ley, Ore., helped Findlay Prep to the 2012 high school
national championship. The 6-foot-4 point guard is the
50th-ranked overall prospect in ESPNs top 100, No. 61
on Rivals.coms list and No. 97 according to Scout.com
(23rd ranked point guard). As a junior, Williams-Goss
averaged 14.3 ppg, 4.3 apg and 4.0 rpg plus shot 60%
from the eld.
Who Are These Guys?
THREE-HEADED MONSTER: The Huskies backcourt
is one of the strengths of the squad. The Huskies have
talent, size and experience at the position thanks in
large part to the trio of senior captains Abdul Gaddy
and Scott Suggs and junior C.J. Wilcox. Gaddy is
the Pac-12s leading active player in assists, Wilcox
was honorable mention All-Pac-12 and ranks third in
UW history in 3-point makes, and Suggs, a 41% career
3-point shooter, returns from a broken foot that cost
him all of last season.
CENTER OF DEFENSE: Returning to man the middle
for the Huskies is 7-foot senior Aziz NDiaye. The Da-
kar, Senegal native was a member of the Pac-12 All-
Defensive Team as a junior and is up to 5th all-time on
the UW list for career blocks. The career 56% shooter
scored was the teams top rebounder grabbing 7.3 per
game. NDiaye, the third player to stand 7-feet or taller
in the Romar era, is especially rejuvenated this season
after spending part of the summer in his native Sen-
egal with his teammates and family.
THE REDSHIRTS: Jernard Jarreau and Andrew
Andrews nally make their debuts after sitting out
2011-12 as redshirts. Both will be counted on to con-
tribute right away after spending a year learning Ro-
mars system, putting on weight (Jarreau has gained
25 pounds since stepping on campus) and developing
their games. Andrews will be counted on for big min-
utes off the bench to spell the guards, while Jarreau
is the fth starter.
THE WALK ONS: The Huskies gained a pair of new-
comers that chose to walk on during the summer.
Quinn Sterling joined the Huskies early in the sum-
mer and traveled with the team to Europe and Africa.
The 6-foot-4 guard showed his shooting prowess on
the trip but has been slowed this fall with a stress frac-
ture in his foot. Dion Overstreet joined the team after
contacting the coaching staff expressing his interest
to join the team. The 5-9 guard averaged double-digit
points at Edmonds CC.
THE TRANSFERS: Washington will have a pair of for-
wards sitting out due to NCAA transfer rules. Perris
Blackwell from San Francisco and 6-11 Gilles Di-
erickx from Florida International both joined the Hus-
kies but are ineligible to play this season. The 6-foot-9
Blackwell was honorable mention All-West Coast
Conference after averaging 12.7 ppg and 6.1 rpg while
shooting 57.5% from the eld. He will have one season
of eligibility remaining. Dierickx started 15 games for
Isiah Thomas squad as a freshman last year and has
the ability to help inside with his size and knock down
shots from outside. The Belgium native will have three
years left to play starting in 2013.
COACHING ADDITIONS: Washington will have
two new faces on the bench this season. Joining Lo-
renzo Romars coaching staff are Brad Jackson and
Lamont Smith. Both are respected basketball minds
and have known Romar for years. Jackson joins the
Huskies after leading Western Washington to the 2012
NCAA Division II championship. He spent 27 years as
head coach for the Vikings before making the move to
Seattle after Raphael Chillious left the Huskies bench
to become an assistant at Villanova. Smith joined the
staff soon after Jackson, reuniting with his former
boss, Romar. Smith spent the last ve years as an as-
sitant at Arizona State, but got his coaching start under
Romar at Saint Louis from 1999-2000. Longtime assis-
tant Paul Fortier moves to the new role of Director of
Player Personel and Recruiting.

Noteworthy
Recapping The Tip-Off Hall Of Fame Tourney
Washington went 2-2 in the four-game Tip-Off Hall of
Fame Tournament that saw the Huskies split a pair of
games both at home and at the Mohegan Sun in Un-
casville, Conn. The Huskies beat Loyola in the season-
opener vs. Loyola but came out at against Albany and
suffered a rare non-conference home defeat against a
non-BCS conference team. The Huskies bounced back
with an overtime win over the BIG EASTs Seton Hall Pi-
rates and then lost to No. 4 Ohio State in the champion-
ship. Abdul Gaddy led the Huskies with 16.0 ppg in the
four games, while Aziz NDiaye averaged 11.5 ppg and
11.8 rpg. In the two games at Mohegan Sun, Gaddy led
the Huskies with 15.5 ppg, but it was C.J. Wilcox who
earned all-tournament honors for the Naismith Bracket
by averaging 14.5 ppg, 3.5 rpg, 1.5 bpg and 1.0 spg.
Stuck In Neutral?
Washington is 6-10 in regular season neutral site
games (2-10 in the last 12) during Lorenzo Romars
11-year tenure at the school. But, when it counts during
the post-season, the Huskies are much better on neu-
tral site courts. The Huskies are 13-6 under Romar at
the Pac-12 Tournament and have won three tournament
championships. UW is 8-6 on neutral sites in the NCAA
tournament and have made three Sweet 16 appear-
ances. The Huskies went 0-1 at MSG during the NIT.
Overall, UW was 0-4 on neutral courts last season and
have lost their last ve neutral site games.
High Post Offense
Washington installed a half-court high-post offense this
year and has been working on the new system since the
summer. Luckily for the Huskies, they had 10 extra prac-
tices to prepare for their summer foreign tour. Lorenzo
Romar learned the high-post offense while an assistant
under Jim Harrick at UCLA and has implemented the
style at his previous coaching stops of Pepperdine and
Saint Louis. The Huskies will still run the oor at every
opportunity as evidenced by their 85 points scored in
the season opener vs. Loyola.
Huskies Are NBA Ready
UW has developed a reputation for sending players to
the NBA during Lorenzo Romars rst 10 seasons as
head coach. Last year, UW was the only Pac-12 school
with multiple players selected and for the rst time
ever saw two players selected in the 1st round (Terence
Ross, 8th to Toronto and Tony Wroten 25th to Memphis).
A total of 6 Huskies have been selected as rst round
picks under Romars tenure to equal UCLA for the most
among Pac-12 schools. Eight Huskies were on NBA ros-
ters at the start of the year: Will Conroy (T-Wolves/
cut), Spencer Hawes (76ers), Quincy Pondexter
(Memphis), Nate Robinson (Chicago), Terrence Ross
(Toronto), Brandon Roy (T-Wolves), Isaiah Thomas
(Kings) and Tony Wroten (Memphis).

UW Picked 5th In Pac-12 Pre-Season Poll
The Huskies were picked to nish fth in the Pac-12 by
a poll of media that cover the conference. Washington
garnered 272 points, including two rst-place votes.
The last time the Huskies were picked to nish fth
was in 2008-09 when they ended up winning the Pac-10
regular season title. Last year the Huskies were picked
to nish fourth, but ended up winning the title. Arizona
was predicted as the winner of the league by a very
close margin. The Wildcats edged UCLA by one point
despite receiving one less rst place votes than the Bru-
ins. California was picked to nish third and Stanford
was chosen to nish fourth. Defending Pac-12 tourna-
ment champion Colorado was selected to nish right
behind Washington in sixth.
World Travelers
The Huskies embarked on a two-week trip this sum-
mer to Europe and Africa that saw them visit Barce-
lona, Spain; Nice France; Monaco; Paris, France; and
Dakar, Senegal. During their foreign tour, the Huskies
played six games and went 3-3 against professional
teams. Scott Suggs and Abdul Gaddy led the team with
13.5 ppg, while C.J. Wilcox was third with 13.2 ppg.
But more importantly, the team had many experiences
that will stay with them for their entire lives. While on
the trip, the team saw such sites as the Eiffel Tower,
The Louvre, the Princes Palace in Monaco, Fraggonard
Perfume Factory; Sagrada Familia, Parc Guell and the
1992 Olympic sites in Barcelona, Spain. They wrapped
up their trip with three days in Dakar, Senegal (see next
note).
Dawgs Visit Africa
The Huskies capped their foreign tour this summer by
spending three day in Dakar, Senegal. While in Africa,
the team had a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Dakar, the
capital of Senegal, is home to senior Aziz NDiaye. He
returned home for the rst time in two years and served
as host, ambassador and translator during the trip. The
team started their Africa leg with a visit to the Bandia
Animal Reserve, followed by a stop at the SEEDS Acad-
emy, where NDiaye got his basketball start. NDiaye
led the Huskies as they ran a clinic for the younger
members of the academy. The next day the team joined
NDiaye on a visit to his home where they saw the home
in which NDiaye grew up. His mom cooked NDiayes
favorite meal -- sh and rice -- for the whole team. Later
that evening the Huskies were scheduled to play Dakar
University, but a severe rainstorm ooded the court and
made the venue unplayable. On the nal day, the team
visited Goree Island, a slave-trading post that served as
the last stop for millions of African slaves before they
were shipped off to Europe and the Americas.

Romar Reaching Milestones
Last season, Lorenzo Romar coached his 500th game in
his career that has spanned 17 seasons. He is 320-206
(.608) all-time. He earned victory No. 300 overall AND
No. 100 in Pac-12 action on Jan. 21, 2012 vs. Stanford.
On Dec. 16, 2011 he reached 200 wins as the Huskies
head man. He is the second fastest Husky coach to
reach the milestone. Romar has one other milestone
that he reached this season vs. OSU in the Pac-12 Tour-
nament: 200 losses in his overall career.

2. Marv Harshman 1972-85 246 146 .628
3. Lorenzo Romar 2003-present 227 118 .658
Marching Up The Charts
Besides Romar, several Husky players are also threat-
ening the UW record books. Abdul Gaddy enters his
senior season 8th all-time in assists and is the Pac-12
active career leader in the category. He is coming off
the third most assists (182) in UW single-season histo-
ry. Junior guard C.J. Wilcox is eyeing several records
himself. He enters the year with the fth most 3-point
makes in school history and will break into the top-three
all-time if he maintains his current pace. Additionally,
he is a career 82.6% free throw shooter to rank 5th all-
time. Aziz NDiaye is 7th all-time on the UWs blocks
list entering this season and needs 15 more to become
the fourth Husky with 100 in their career. NDiaye also
ranks 7th all-time on the UWs eld goal percentage list.
Scott Suggs entered the year sixth on the all-time 3-pt
FG% list and needs 11 3-point makes to join Wilcox in
the top-10 list.
Sons Of Sonics
Shawn Kemp Jr. is not the rst Husky player to come
from NBA lineage -- specically sons of Seattle Son-
ics. Through the years, four other Huskies had dads that
spent portions of their NBA careers playing for the Son-
ics. Here is a look at the list:
Son (Years a Husky) Dad (Yrs a Sonics)
Shawn Kemp, Jr. (2012-) Shawn (1989-97)
Marlon Shelton (1999-2003) Lonnie (1978-82)
Bryan Brown (1998-2001) Fred (1971-84)
Mike Westphal (1999-2000) Paul (1980-81)
Donald Watts (1996-99) Slick (1974-78)
Filling Up Alaska Airlines Arena
Despite Alaska Airlines Arena (10,000) being the sec-
ond smallest Pac-12 Conference home in regards to
capacity, Washington was second in the conference in
attendance. The Huskies averaged 9,294 fans per game
in the regular season (8,785 including NIT) and trailed
only Arizona, which averaged 13,906 fans at the McK-
ale Center (14,545) each game. Cal was third, drawing
8,532 fans at Haas Pavilion (11,877).
Reviewing 2012
Romar Leads UW To Another His-
toric Season
Once again, Husky Coach Lorenzo Romar led the Hus-
kies to unchartered territory in 2011-12. The list is long
of accomplishments that helps solidify Washington as
one of the elite college basketball programs in the na-
tion. Here is a quick overview of some of the programs
accomplishments during the year:
For the rst time in school history, the Huskies have
won 20 or more games in four-straight seasons.
Washington has amassed 100 wins over the last four
seasons, the rst time in program history they have
reached the century mark in a four-year span.
The Huskies won the Pac-12 regular season title with
a 14-4 record, their 23rd conference title since 1911 --
18 of those crowns are outright -- but only two of those
have come in the last 58 years (2009 & 2012).
Fourteen conference wins equals the 4th most in
team history and just the 9th time the Huskies have
acheived that many league victories.
UW advanced to the seminals of the 2012 NIT Tour-
nament, the furthest they have advanced in the post-
season tournament and furthest they have advanced in
either the NIT or NCAAs since 1953.
Tony Wroten was named Pac-12 Freshman of the
Year, the fth time in UW history they have won the
award.
Wroten and Terrence Ross both earned rst team All-
Pac-12 honors, making UW the only team with multiple
players on the rst team in four-straight years.
Husky Quick Hitters
Washington returns 47.3 percent of its scoring and
57.3 percent of its rebounding from last years team
that went 24-11 overall, won the Pac-12 regular season
title and advanced to NIT seminals.
Two starters (Abdul Gaddy and Aziz NDiaye) re-
turn to the squad and a total of four players return who
averaged at least 17 minutes of playing time per game.
Plus, the Huskies get Scott Suggs back, who averaged
18.3 minutes per game in 2010-11.
Returner Aziz NDiaye was a rst-team member on
the 2012 Pac-12 All-Defensive team, while C.J. Wil-
cox was honorable mention All-Pac-12. Lorenzo Ro-
mar was conference Coach of the Year for a third time.
The Huskies enter the year with more wins in their
current arena (921) than any other school. Their total is
over 100 more than second-place Penn.
Washington has won 20 games four-consecutive
seasons; a rst in school history. In those four seasons,
UW has claimed two regular season conference titles
and two Pac-10 tournament championships.
Washington has amassed 100 wins over the last four
seasons, the rst time in program history they have
reached the century mark in a four-year span.
