DAYS TO REMEMBER
24 January - National Girl Child Day of India: The day is celebrated in order to generate public awareness on the deep bias against female children in India. It is also an effort to fight against the "scourges" of sex-selective abortion and malnutrition faced by girl children across the country. 21 March - International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination: On that day, in 1960, police opened fire and killed 69 people at a peaceful demonstration in Sharpeville, South Africa, against the apartheid "pass laws". Proclaiming the Day in 1966, the UN General Assembly called on the international community to redouble its efforts to eliminate all forms of racial discrimination. 02 April - International Childrens Book Day: Since 1967, on or around Hans Christian Andersen's birthday, 2 April, International Children's Book Day (ICBD) is celebrated to inspire love of reading and to call attention to children's books. 07 April - World Health Day: Millions of children around the world die annually from illnesses, which could otherwise have been prevented through the creation of healthy settings, whether it be in the home, the school, or the community at large. World Health Day is celebrated to bring focus to above mentioned and other health related issues. 22 April - World Earth Day: This is a special day that reminds us to share the responsibility of protecting our planet, without which our children cannot survive. 15 May - International Family Day: This day highlights the importance of families. It aims at fostering equality, bringing about a fuller sharing of domestic responsibilities and employment opportunities. 1 June - International Children's Day: Children's Day is an event celebrated on various days in many places around the world. International Children's Day is celebrated on June 1 and Universal Children's Day on November 20. General Assembly decided to observe 26 June as the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking as an expression of its determination to strengthen action and cooperation to achieve the goal of an international society free of drug abuse. 12 August - International Youth Day: International Youth Day (IYD) is an awareness day designated by the United Nations. It is meant as an opportunity for governments and others to draw attention to youth issues worldwide. 08 September - International Literacy Day: September 8 was proclaimed International Literacy Day by UNESCO on November 17, 1965. It was first celebrated in 1966. Its aim is to highlight the importance of literacy to individuals, communities and societies. On International Literacy Day each year, UNESCO reminds the international community of the status of literacy and adult learning globally. 24 September International Girl Child Day: The International Girl Child Day is marked to draw attention to the plight of the girl child, highlight the issues concerning them, and raise awareness in this regard across the globe. First Monday of October - World Habitat Day: The purpose of the day is to reflect on the state of our cities and towns and the basic human right to adequate shelter. It also aims to remind the world of its collective responsibility for the habitat of future generations. 17 October International Day for the Eradication of Poverty: Since 1993, 17th October has been recognized as the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty by the Division of Social Policy and Development, under the Department of Economic and Social Affairsof the United Nations (UN). Its aim is to increase international and social awareness about poverty as well as to encourage aid from society to those in need. 14 November Childrens Day celebrated in India: Children's day in India is celebrated on Pandit Jawaharlal Nehrus, Indias first Prime Ministers, birthday as a day of fun and frolic, a celebration of childhood, children and Nehruji's love for them. 16 November - International Day for Tolerance and Peace: The International Day of Tolerance focuses the world's attention on tolerance as an essential condition for peace, democracy and sustainable development. The worlds leaders recognized this when, in adopting the Millennium Declaration in 2000, they placed tolerance among the fundamental values on which international relations in the twenty-first century must be based. 19 November - World Day for the Prevention of Child Abuse: This World Day, initiated by the Womens World Summit Foundation (WWSF) in 2000, aims to create a culture of prevention around the world by encouraging governments and community/civil society organizations to play more active roles in protecting children. 20 November - Universal Children's Day: This is the date on which the UN General Assembly adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child (1959) and the Convention of the Rights of the Child (1989). The day is an occasion to highlight the necessity of providing children in need with support and respect to enable them a life of dignity and a future as self-confident adults. 25 November - International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women: The origins of November 25th go back to 1960, when the three Mirabal sisters from the Dominican Republic were violently assassinated for their political activism. In December 1999, the UN General Assembly adopted a Resolution, declaring November 25th as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. 01 December - World AIDS Day: World Aids Day is an attempt to raise awareness about HIV and AIDS and to combat the spread of this global menace. 02 December - The International Day for the Abolition of Slavery: The day is annually observed on December 2 to remind people that modern day slavery works against human rights. The day also encourages people to put meaning to the words of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights that no one shall be held in slavery or servitude through their actions. 03 December International Day of Persons with Disabilities: Since 1992, the United Nations' (UN) International Day of Persons with Disabilities is annually held on December 3. It aims to increase the understanding of the issues around disabilities and draw attention to the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with disabilities. 10 December - World Human Rights Day: The Day marks the anniversary of the Assembly's adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948. Over the years, a whole network of human rights instruments and mechanisms have been developed to ensure the primacy of human rights and to confront human rights violations wherever they occur. 12 December - Global Day Against Child Trafficking: On 12 December 2000 the UN Convention against Transnational Organized Crime and its two Protocols on Human Trafficking and Smuggling of Migrants were first opened for signatures in Palermo, Italy. The day marked the real beginning of a global commitment to fight this growing crime. The first call for recognition of 12 December as the Global Day Against Child Trafficking was thus made by the International Campaign against Child Trafficking (ICaCT) and its partners in the year 2003. The day is a reminder to everyone of their responsibility to protect children against trafficking and exploitation.

To carry forward this mandate, HAQ undertakes research and documentation and is actively engaged in public education and advocacy. Over the years, it has developed skills for quick and incisive scanning of law and policy documents and commenting on them. It works with existing networks, builds alliances and partnerships with other actors/stakeholders such as the bureaucrats, parliamentarians, judges and lawyers, police and media. HAQ seeks to serve as a resource and support base for individuals and groups dealing with children at every level. It not only provides information and referral services but also undertakes training and capacity building for all those working with children or on issues concerning them, and for the children themselves. HAQ works on children and governance, violence and abuse of children, child trafficking and juvenile justice. It provides legal support to children in need, particularly those who are victims of abuse and exploitation or are in conflict with law.

A Child smiles
Only in a world of freedom,
Only with the sun piercing right through the dark hut, Can a child see the wonderful sights of this world. Only in an ocean of unprejudiced love, Can a child speak to its heart's content. Only through the eyes of soft empathy, Can a child see its true reflection. Can a child unfold and bloom.

Only in surroundings of unadulterated society, Can a child open its mind wholesomely and dream. Only when applauded at its tiniest achievement, Can a child come to know its hidden potential. Only in lanes without propagation of caste, Can a child recognize its own identity. Only in the cradle of happiness, Can a child fantasize and create.

Only in unpolluted waters of the Ganges, Can a child splash its hands and wholeheartedly swim. Only without discrimination of gender and status, Can a child flourish to achieve its goal. Only in the gentle hands of its mother, Can a child shield its eyes and sob.

Only in the pages of medieval history, Can a child understand its ancestors better.

Only in vicinity of the learned, Can a child imbibe the essentials of life.

And Only in an atmosphere of complete equality, Can a child stimulate his urge for learning, prosper and SMILE. Nikhil Parekh
