For example, the crossword puzzle was invented in 1913 by Arthur Wynne. He was a journalist in England, but every week he wrote puzzles for a newspaper in the United States. The first crossword puzzle was diamond shaped and was published on December 21, 1913. How many of us have gone to an amusement park and enjoyed the Ferris wheel, a gigantic vertical metal wheel that slowly moves with people riding in hanging baskets? The Ferris wheel was invented by George Ferris, a builder from Pennsylvania. It opened at the Chicago Worlds Fair in 1893. It was much bigger than the Ferris wheels of today. It was as tall as a 25-story building and had 36 cars that could seat 60 people each. Silly putty is a mysterious substance that children play with. It can be formed into many different shapes, and when it is made into a ball, it bounces higher than most rubber balls. It was invented in 1943 by James Wright. He was trying to invent a synthetic rubber. It was first sold as a toy in 1949, and in 1968 the Apollo 8 astronauts took it to the moon.
