The 8th chapter of the new PMBOK Guide 5th edition has a broader scope as more tools have been included, however the detailed descriptions of many tools have been lost. Read on for the details. Newbie Disclaimer For those who do not know the game: the PMI is the leading project management organization in the world and is well-known for the PMBOK Guide, an official ANSI standard and the most important PM standard in the world. There are also other PMI standards as shown above and of course a single international PM standard (ISO 21500) and loads of national standards. But a new edition of the PMBOK Guide is always worth a look.

Only a few changes have been made to the knowledge area Human Resource Management in the new PMBOK Guide 5th edition, so todays posting is quite short ,-) Newbie Disclaimer For those who do not know the game: the PMI is the leading project management organization in the world and is well-known for the PMBOK Guide, an official ANSI standard and the most important PM standard in the world. Introduction
A new table (table 8-2) maps the IPECC model (Initiating, Planning, Executing, Monitoring & Controlling, Closing) as used by the PMI to other popular models like PDCA (Plan, Do, Check, Act, Shewhard 80), Cost of Quality (Feigenbaum 56) as well as terms used in Quality Assurance and Quality Control. It is definitely worth studying it.

9.1 Plan Human Resource Management

This process has been renamed from Develop Human Resource Plan for consistency. Furthermore the Human Resource Plan is now known as Human Resource Management Plan, but the content has not changed to a higher level as the name change might suggest.

8.1 Plan Quality Management

This process has been renamed from 8.1. Plan Quality for consistency. Furthermore the tools Cause-and-effect diagrams, flowcharts, checksheets, pareto diagrams, histograms, control charts and scatter diagrams are now summarized under the wellknown term Seven basic quality tools (see section 8.1.2.3).

9.2 Acquire Project Team

Here we have a new tool, the Multi-criteria decision analysis including team member selection criteria like Availability Cost Experience Ability Knowledge Skills Attitude Internal factors On Monday it gets more interesting againfinally we look at the split of communications management which lead to the new knowledge area stakeholder management. Note: Quotations contain citations or text only slightly changed from the PMBOK discussion.

8.2 Perform Quality Assurance

Using the same pattern, affinity diagrams, process decision program charts, interrelationship digraphs, tree diagrams, prioritization matrices, activity network diagrams and matrix diagrams have been summarized under the term Seven Quality Management and Control Tools (see section 8.2.2.1). However, these tools are officially known as Seven Quality Management and Planning Tools. Sadly, the detail descriptions of most of the 14 tools have been lost from the guide. Tomorrows topic is Human Resource Management, the 9th chapter of the guide. Note: Quotations contain citations or text only slightly changed from the PMBOK Guides 4th and 5th edition for the purpose of discussion. PMBOK Guide, an official ANSI standard and the most important PM standard in the world. There are also other PMI standards as shown above and of course a single international PM standard (ISO 21500) and loads of national standards. But a new edition of the PMBOK Guide is always worth reading about.

6.1 Plan Schedule Management

As Time Management has been a knowledge area without a process to come up with a management plan, it has been added and the following time management processes have been renumbered. The process itself does not create new artifacts and looks logical.

The new year starts with Cost Management, the 7th chapter in the new PMBOK Guide. There are only a few changes to this chapter, however they are important to the soon to be updated PMP exam. But a new edition of the PMBOK Guide is always worth reading about.

6.3 Sequence Activities

is good for three additions to the guide: 1. Internal Dependencies Besides the already known mandatory, discretionary and external dependencies, the new term internal dependencies (section 6.3.2.2) has been introduced. These are under the control of the project team and the example given is a team planning to test a machine which has to be assembled by them first. 2. Triangular Distribution The distribution is known from the Risk Management knowledge area of the 4th edition. Now it has been added to three-point estimation on top of the beta distribution. The calculation using the beta distribution (known from the PERT technique) is based on the most likely (tM), optimistic (tO) and pessimistic (tP) estimations and the formula tE = (tO + 4*tM + tP) / 6. The new formula for the triangular distribution is tE = (tO + tM + tP) / 3. 3. Reserve analysis Finally the terms Contingency Reserve and Management Reserve are properly explained in the guide. The first one deals with known-unkowns (accepted risks), the second on with unknown-unkowns (unforseen work, see section 6.5.2.6). Both are connected to Risk Management and were used, but not explained properly in the past.

7.1 Plan Cost Management

The effort to have a management plan for each knowledge area brings this new process. Basically the 4th edition chapter introduction has been moved to this new 5th edition process.

7.2 Estimate Costs

Here are two very important changes for the exam. The meaning of Rough order of magnitude (ROM) has been changed from +/50% to the range from -25% to +75%. Also the Definite Estimate has been changed from +/- 10% to the range from -5% to +10%.

7.3 Determine Budget

The cost baseline figures in section 7.3.3.1 have been updated to show the management reserve.

7.4 Control Costs

A valuable learning help, up to the 4th edition not part of the guide, has finally been integrated in the 5th edition: an earned value calculations summary table with all abbreviations, definitions, use, equations and interpretations (see section 7.4.2.4). Note: Quotations contain citations or text only slightly changed from the PMBOK Guides 4th and 5th edition for the purpose of discussion. Dieses Posting Inside out Updated Cost Management in the PMBOK Guide 5th edition (7/15) wurde verffentlicht auf Unlocking Potential.

6.6 Develop Schedule

The tools & techniques section 6.6.2 is definitely worth reading. The descriptions of the Critical Path (6.6.2.2) and Critical Chain Methods (6.6.2.3) have been improved and now include helpful diagrams. Two terms have been replaced by more general ones: 1. Resource optimization techniques Previously the term resource leveling has been used, now the more general term also includes Resource Smoothing (section 6.6.2.4). The latter one does not change the completion date or the critical path, activities are delayed within the free and total float instead. 2. Modeling techniques Section 6.6.2.5. adds simulation (e.g. Monte Carlo) to the previously described what-if scenario analysis and introduces the more general term Modeling Techniques. The last change introduced with this process is a more detailed view on schedules. A Schedule Model is a representation of the project activities with durations and dependencies. Schedule Data is then used to create a Project Schedule with planned dates, milestones and resources. It can then be shown as Schedule Presentation in the form of bar charts, milestone charts or project schedule network diagrams (see sections 6.6.3.2 and 6.6.3.3).

Inside out Updated Time Management in the PMBOK Guide 5th edition (6/15)
By Andreas Heilwagen on December 31st, 2012

Depending on your point of view, most projects are finished late. Neither is the new Project Time Management chapter in the PMBOK Guide 5th edition to blame, nor does it brings breakthroughs in the 5th edition. It is definitely an improvement over the 4th edition, so lets look at the details. Newbie Disclaimer For those who do not know the game: the PMI is the leading project management organization in the world and is well-known for the

6.7 Control Schedule

This process now mentions a variation in case an agile approach is used, including burn-down charts (the term itself is missing), retrospectives, reprioritizing the backlog, determining velocity etc. After New Years Day I will continue with the Cost Management knowledge area. So Happy New Year!
