By Angi Johnson, Aquatics Director Think winter is not the time for swimming? Well, in our two heated pools you can enjoy the water all year! We offer swim lessons for all ages starting at six months for children and their parents to adults. It is never too late to learn to swim! Learning how to swim is the most important step in preventing drownings, not to mention that it is an excellent form of exercise. Water aerobics is another enjoyable way to get into - and stay in - shape.

Unique Y Programs Core Values

Encourage Strong

By Jen Gossert Director of School Age Services

YMCA staff strives to create a safe and engaging atmosphere for the children in their care at our Before & After School Fun Club program sites. At one location in particular, two Y staff members have demonstrated their energy and creative drive by implementing unique activities for the children.

At Scotland Elementary, Lauren Leon and Allison Mione lead creative activities such as cooking events, trust activities, and team challenges. In one such activity, teams of elementary students participated in various challenges like Guess that Food while blindfolded. The children hardly stopped laughing for the entire duration of the competition. In another activity, the kids made fruit pizzas. Next month, Lauren and Allison are planning on focusing on activities that promote cultural awareness, including sampling foods from different cultures and learning about those cultures. These activities were used for multiple purposes, one of which was highlighting the core values of the YMCA: respect, caring, honesty and responsibility. Lauren and Allison remind children of the core values as they play every day. If teams get too competitive or unsportsmanlike, respect is reinforced to keep children in the proper perspective. At the beginning of the school year, Lauren developed a behavior incentive program for the Scotland site based on rewarding kids when they demonstrate core values. The children receive cards with the value they demonstrated. Each card is worth a certain amount of points they can trade in for prizes.

After every gym game, the teams line up and give each other high fives, encouraging peers with Good game, or Great teamwork! These incentives and practices keep kids excited to behave, and rewards them for being a role model of the Ys core values. Lauren and Allison are but two of many innovative staff members working with Y programs. Creative activities and teaching the importance of the core values are just two of many aspects of the Before & After School Fun Club program that sets the YMCA apart as a leader for child development in our community.
