New Haven Pride Center Announces 2013 Dorothy Awards Honorees

10th Anniversary Event Takes Place Saturday, March 2, 2013
January 6, 2013, New Haven, CT The New Haven Pride Center (NHPC) is excited to announce the recipients of its prestigious 2013 Dorothy Awards, which honor members of the local community for their contributions to LGBT life. The 2013 Dorothy Awards will mark the tenth anniversary of this groundbreaking event, the first of its kind in the state. Our 2013 honorees represent the rainbow of colors that comprise LGBT life in Connecticut today. The New Haven Pride Center is delighted to be honoring such a remarkable group, especially as we celebrate the tenth anniversary of our signature event. Our 2013 Dorothy Award honorees are: The Sweetheart Invitational bowling tournament, celebrating 25 years of bringing together gay and straight bowlers in the spirit of competition and giving. Irwin Krieger, clinical social worker who has provided psychotherapy for LGBT individuals, couples and families for over 25 years; and author of Helping Your Transgender Teen: A Guide for Parents. Carolyn and Leslie Gabel-Brett, activists, advocates and a true power couple; they have played a significant role in nearly every major LGBT milestone in Connecticut over the last 30 years. The work and contributions of these honorees reflect the diversity and the depth of LGBT life in our state, said NHPC board member and Dorothy Committee co-chair Kathryn Thomas. LGBT culture in our state lives, breathes and thrives, in part due to the work done by our honorees. Our tenth annual Dorothy Awards provide the ideal opportunity for us to acknowledge the accomplishments of these very special people. The 2013 Dorothy Awards will be held on Saturday, March 2, 2013, at Fantasia in North Haven, CT. For our extra special tenth annual event, we recruited an extra special host, News 8 (WTNH) on-air personality Jocelyn Maminta. Attendees can expect to bid on a series of exciting silent auction items, feast on delicious food and drink, and dance the night away. As usual, guests should also expect some surprises! All proceeds from the event benefit the New Haven Pride Center, its services and programs. Tickets for the awards are available at www.dorothyawards.com. Founded in 1996, the New Haven Pride Center (NHPC) is a non profit organization, now celebrating its fifteenth season, serving the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning/queer community and its allies. The NHPC is New Haven Countys only LGBTQ-focused community center and is an allvolunteer organization that relies on financial contributions for its existence.
