How many new students have come to NIST every year until year 8?

INTRODUCTION:
In math class, we did an assessment on our current unit, Statistics. Every individual in year 8 was to choose a question that they want to research about. I researched by conducting a survey asking people the year they came to NIST in. In this report I will explain how I came to the conclusion of my final answer, and what that final answer is. My research question is: How many new students have come to NIST every year until year 8? Hypothesis: I think, that on average, at least 5 new students would come every year. I think that this is actually a really small number, because this year, only in my class, even before I do research, I already know that there were 7 new students that came this year, and that also only in year 8. SO there was probably at least 5 new students that came every year. Why I chose to research about this: I chose to find out about this because a lot of new students came this year and I wondered whether this many new students come every year or not. ATL I used: in this project I used the ATL skill of Organisation, because I had to organize my data. I also used the trait of communication because I had to communicate with the other students to collect my data.

DATA COLLECTION:
To collect data, I went over to all the year 8 classes one by one, and I INDIVIDUALLY went to every person and I interviewed them. I then collected my data in a tally chart. Afterwards I made a frequency table to keep my data organized in a more clear way. With the help of this frequency table, I was able to calculate the mean, median, and mode. After I made this table, I was able to calculate the mean, median and mode. My calculations for these are below: Mode: The frequency that occurs the most is year 7, because this frequency occurs 12 times. Median: Half of 52 is 26, which is the 5th occurrence, and right after that comes the 6th occurrence. So the middle numbers are 5 and 6. To find the median, we have to find the mean of these two numbers. 11 (5 + 6) divided by 2 (5 and 6 are 2 numbers) = 5.5 This means that the median is 5.5. Mean: 207 ( total xf) divided by 52 (sum of frequency) = 3.98

In this graph, you can see how many new students came to NIST every year until year 8, out of all the people surveyed, which you can see as the total, was around 53. Analysis: In this graph, you can see that the most people new students came in year 7, and the second most students came in year 1. You can also see that year 2 and 3 were the years in which the least students came to NIST. In years 4, 5, and 6, the amount of students that came each year seems to decrease in a pattern.

Answers to Research Question:


After all the surveys, data collecting, and data analysing I have done, I am able to answer my research question. Out of all the people I have surveyed, 11 new people came in year 1, 1 new person came in both year 2 and 3, 7 new people came in year 4, 6 new people came in year 5, 5 new people came in year 6, 12 new people came in year 7, and 9 new people came in year 8,. This means that in average 3.98 people come to NST as new students every year. This answer clears my doubts about whether many new people came every year or not, because it turns out that in most year levels (i.e. 2, 3, 4, 5, 6) there werent as many new people that came as year 8.

Method of Data Collection Positives and Negatives:


In my data collection method, there were some positives and also some things that could have made my data inaccurate. I think that the best thing about my data collection method is that I went and asked each person I surveyed individually, that way I knew that there werent any mistakes, for example, if I had done this as a survey, there could have been people that accidently did the survey twice, or some people that didnt bother doing the survey at all. I think that something that could have given me inaccurate data is the fact that I surveyed only 52 people out of the whole of year 8, and year 8 has more than 110 students, so I didnt even surveyed even less than half of the student body.

Conclusion:
In conclusion, my hypothesis was that on average at least 5 new students would come every year. Out of my results, that hypothesis was proven incorrect, because my mean was 3.98, which is less than 5. Of course this isnt the most accurate answer, because if I had surveyed more people, my mean would have been higher. If I could have done this assessment again, I would have probably changed my research question to something like: Out of every 10 students, how many new students have come to NIST? I think that I would change my research question to something like that because it makes it easier to analyse and you can get more accurate data.
